In Which Harry Potter, The Boy Who Lived Twice, Finds Himself In The Room Of Requirment For An Eighth

An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works

In which Harry Potter, The Boy Who Lived Twice, finds himself in the Room Of Requirment for an eighth year party.

In which, as it happens, a certain ferret, who has apologized for his stint as a death eater and successfully re-integrated into Hogwarts, is at this party as well.

In which the eighth years are getting remarkably tired of all the unresolved sexual tension, and decide to do something about it.

In which Harry has gotten rather inebriated.

One can only guess at what will happen.

Guys lookit

dam…….. that website “you feel like shit” (it’s like a questionnaire / troubleshooting guide for when you feel like shit) really works………………….. im not even all the way thru it and i even half-assed a lot of the suggestions and i already feel loads better

yeah, irl people frequently mask or downplay their feelings, I have been guilty of saying I’m fine when I’m not or saying something I don’t agree with, seeing characters who realistically speak and think with realistic thought processes always bumps a book up at *least* two places in the list in my head.

differing levels of emotional intelligence also just hit hard and help further the plot (in my opinion as a writer)

For example:

“I’m fine.”

“I believe you”

where they both are lying and you *know* that because they both don’t know how to communicate how they feel.

“I’m fine.”

“Clearly you’re not. I don’t know how to help right now but I I can see that you need some”

where one is lying and the other can tell and refuses to play with it.

“I’m not fine. Please help me.”

“Of course. Always.”

or

“I’m not fine. But I will be.”

“Alright.”

Or

“I’m not fine. I… will be.”

“But will you really?”

I just like when the dynamic of emotional intelligence is played around with. It adds something

That post that's like "stop writing characters who talk like they're trying to get a good grade in therapy" really blew the door wide open for me about how common it's become for a character's emotional intelligence to not be taken into consideration when writing conflict. I remember the first time I went to therapy I had such a hard time even identifying what I was feeling, let alone had the language to explain it to someone else. Of course there are plenty of people who've never been to therapy a day in their life who are in tune to their emotions. But even they would have some trouble expressing themselves sometimes. You have to take into account there are plenty of people who are uncomfortable expressing themselves and people who think they're not allowed to feel certain ways. It also makes for more interesting conflict to have characters with different levels of understanding.
