the vast majority of fanworks are bad, and that's fine, actually. they are bad for the same reason that the average number of legs for a human person to have is less than two: statistics. like with all endeavours and especially creative ones, most people who write fanfiction or draw art of their favourite characters are bad at it. if you line up all the crochet projects in the world, most of them will be, well, bad. some are bad because they're the first thing a person ever made, or the second or third or tenth, and this kind of thing takes practice. others are bad because the person who made them is just not very good at it. maybe they just learned how to make granny squares and they're perfectly happy to never expand or improve on that. most people who dance or bake or garden or braid hair are not amazing at it! and you'd never go to your kid's dance recital or eat your friend's homemade carrot cake and expect the same experience as you'd have at a professional ballet performance or award-winning bakery. And that's if we assume there is an objective measure of Good Art, which there isn't! Some art is just "bad" because you don't like it!

I think though that specifically with fanfiction, we sometimes forget that when we read a book or watch a movie, dozens of people have looked at it and given feedback and made changes and done quality control before the final product reaches our shelves or screens, and that's not counting the original writer's learning process and past experience. A published book is not anyone's first crochet project, even if it is their debut novel. But with fanfiction, the barrier to entry is so low (on purpose! this is a good thing!) that we do get to see a lot of wonky granny squares, and on sites like AO3 they're sitting on the same shelf as the hand-made silk lace wedding dress and you can't always tell just by looking at it which is which. The consequence of this is that we encounter fic that we think is unpolished, has bad punctuation, is out of character, and we are tempted to think "well, this is awful! how dare this person put this wonky granny square on the same shelf as the lace wedding dress!" But that's not how fandom is supposed to work! That wonky granny square is somebody who is really excited about this TV show they just watched and they are reaching out into the void to share their excitement with you. To scoff at them for not making a lace wedding dress is really, really rude. Even if they did make a lace wedding dress, maybe it's just really not your style, or you think they should have used a different pattern, and it's still their wedding dress. You don't have to wear the dress and you don't have to read the fic.

We all know that there is some fanfic out there that is incredible. I think it's important to talk about that! But the vast majority of people who post their writing online are just sharing their little hobby projects that they make for fun and I also think it's important to remember that.

Writing tips for long fics that helped me that no one asked for.

1.) Don't actually delete content from your WIP unless it is minor editing - instead cut it and put it in a secondary document. If you're omitting paragraphs of content, dialog, a whole scene you might find a better place for it later and having it readily available can really save time. Sometimes your idea was fantastic, but it just wasn't in the right spot.

2.) Stuck with wording the action? Just write the dialog then revisit it later.

3.) Stuck on the whole scene? Skip it and write the next one.

4.) Write on literally any other color than a white background. It just works. (I use black)

5.) If you have a beta, while they are beta-ing have them read your fic out loud. Yes, I know a lot of betas/writers do not have the luxury of face-timing or have the opportunity to do this due to time constraints etc but reading your fic out loud can catch some very awkward phrasing that otherwise might be missed. If you don't have a beta, you read it out loud to yourself. Throw some passion into your dialog, you might find a better way to word it if it sounds stuffy or weird.

6.) The moment you have an idea, write it down. If you don't have paper or a pen, EMAIL it to yourself or put it in a draft etc etc. I have sent myself dozens of ideas while laying down before sleep that I 10/10 forgot the next morning but had emailed them to myself and got to implement them.

7.) Remember - hits/likes/kudos/comments are not reflective of the quality of your fic or your ability to write. Most people just don't comment - even if they say they do, they don't, even if they preach all day about commenting, they don't, even if they are a very popular blog that passionately reminds people to comment - they don't comment (I know this personally). Even if your fic brought tears to their eyes and it haunted them for weeks and they printed it out and sent it to their friends they just don't comment. You just have to accept it. That being said - comment on the fic you're reading now, just do it, if you're 'shy' and that's why you don't comment the more you comment the better you'll get at it. Just do it.

8.) Remove unrealistic daily word count goals from your routine. I've seen people stress 1500 - 2000 words a day and if they don't reach that they feel like a failure and they get discouraged. This is ridiculous. Write when you can, but remove absurd goals. My average is 500 words a day in combination with a 40 hour a week job and I have written over 200k words from 2022-2023.

9.) There are dozens of ways to do an outline from precise analytical deconstruction that goes scene by scene to the minimalist bullet point list - it doesn't matter which one you use just have some sort of direction. A partial outline is better than no outline.

10.) Write for yourself, not for others. Write the fic you know no one is going to read. Write the fic that sounds ridiculous. You will be so happy you put it out in the world and there will be people who will be glad it exists.

I feel called out hehe

i don't know who needs to hear this, but i needed to hear it today, so here goes: you should write that fic. you should write what makes you happy.

it doesn't matter if the concept has been done before, you are still allowed to write your coffee shop/flower shop/college/western AU. you should write that fic that is wildly self-indulgent. you should process something dark and hideous through your fic. you should share something beautiful through your fic. those two things are not mutually exclusive, either. you don't have to be dealing with something traumatic to write something considered taboo. and yeah, even if that might be a little out of character for that old man, you're still allowed to write it.

and if someone gets so upset about it they're in your inbox being an asshole, you have my permission to delete that message and move on with your day. you also have my permission to tell them to go fuck themselves. you do not owe an explanation to anyone.

tag appropriately, and write whatever the fuck you want.

One of the funniest things about enemies-to-lovers ships is how they’re almost always obsessed with each other. Like if a character actively chooses to interact with another character over and over again instead of simply ignoring them? Throw darts at it all you want, but you still printed out a picture of them to hang on your wall

Big fan of characters realizing they don't get to die. They have to live. And grow. And be a person. And deal with shit they thought they'd never have to. And be fucked up about it. I would like more of this. Enough dying for honor or as redemption. It ain't. You're just a corpse. There is no moral value in dirt time.

You misunderstand, I don't want to write. I want to have written.

i really liked the unique premise for this one! it's a funny and cute read with just a tiny serving of angst.

summary:

Yoongi's best friend gets engaged, and it's not to him. It's kind of a big problem because Yoongi's only been in love with him his whole life.

Enter Kim Seokjin, an escort Yoongi hires to play his fake boyfriend to make Hoseok jealous.

It doesn't go the way he thought.

posting niche fic on ao3 is like releasing a small creature into the wild and hoping it survives and finds sustenance

i don't think I can give a super coherent explanation for this rec, but i can try— avatar TLA holds a special place in my heart, and this fic was everything i love about it. poetic, ripped my heart out, and yet i read the whole thing in one night and could barely function on like 2 hours of sleep after it. this is definitely one of my favourite fics of all time, and i'm not sugar-coating it.

summary:

The Avatar, by now, should be nearly three years old. The Avatar should be an earthbender, first. The Avatar should have eyes that Jimin convinces himself that he could know—will know—with nothing but a look.

Years after losing his best friend to an attack on the Order of the White Lotus, Jimin finds the Avatar.

jeongguk stares. at—himself. as a sixteen-year-old. he’s got—black hair, just as fluffy and terribly dishevelled as it’s always been in the morning, and there’s baby fat on his cheeks, and there are gauges in his ears, and he’s staring with those wide wide eyes that jeongguk knows, that jeongguk has—this jeongguk. and also that jeongguk.

they stare at each other for an inordinate amount of time, it feels—that jeongguk with a tea cup in his hand and a massive white t-shirt on. and jeongguk had just assumed that if this was a dream, he would be the only jeongguk. and if this wasn’t a dream and he’d somehow ended up here for real, he would have switched places with himself or just turned up in the other’s place.

but. that’s clearly not the case.

“um,” says jeongguk, this jeongguk. “hello?”

and jeongguk—that jeongguk—screams.

(or: jeongguk wakes up in 2013. he finds that some things always change—and some things always stay the same.)

the premise and the worldbuilding were really interesting, and aside from being a fresh take on the same old vampire trope, this one was just a joy to read from start to finish. i mean, don't get me wrong, there's angst— but I also stayed up late reading this because of how hooked i was. this one is a staple in my vampire aus collection!

(also everyone's so dramatic in this fic and i dig that)

this one is an absolute treat! yoongi hires tae to be his pretend boyfriend but then it becomes a bit too real and that's cliché to a fault, but also funny, well-written and just a really good time overall.

summary:

“Together with their families, Kim Namjoon and Kim Seokjin… Wow, this is formal… Wait,” Hoseok squints at the paper, before looking back at Yoongi with a quizzical look on his face. “They invited you with a guest? But… You’re single, right?”

“Min Yoongi,” Jimin glares at him over the bar, crossing his arms sternly over his chest. “If you’re seeing someone and you didn’t tell us I will kick your ass, so help me god.”

“I’m not dating anyone,” Yoongi sighs, grabbing the invitation and scanning it quickly. The words “with a guest” are underlined and Yoongi can almost see it: the smugness on his brother’s face as he nods with satisfaction, putting the pencil down.

“So what does it mean?”

Yoongi shifts uncomfortably in his seat, avoiding making eye contact.

"I might’ve… invented a boyfriend," he finally mumbles to the glass in front of him.

So I thought this was commonly known internet navigation (but apparently it might just be those of us who have been using the internet since the 90's who still know it). Or so it seems based on... a grumpy comment I got.

When you see an arrow like this:

yes, so, this hurts. this was actually my first time reading a sentinel/guide au, and this fic really delivered it on a silver platter. you're in for a rich little piece of worldbuilding, breathtaking writing, and the feels. i absolutely adored every single word of this fic— it was real and raw and it definitely clawed my heart out. this fic does deal with a few pretty heavy themes, so please read the tags before engaging!

summary:

The prince's companion is a sentinel. Taehyung knows, like he's never known anything before, and fear is copper and sharp on his tongue, and the sentinel's eyes stay lowered and his shoulders stay stiff and he follows exactly in the prince's footsteps like a trained dog. The prince's companion is a sentinel, and Taehyung for the first time feels alone in his own skin, quiet and still and wholly himself.

Taehyung never wanted to leave his home behind. Jimin never had one in the first place.

i feel like this is something i say about all my favourite fics, but i really love this fic for how much it made me cry. it's beautifully written, hilarious at times and terribly SAD and REAL at others, and yeah it owns my heart.

Namjoon's palm rests steady on his bad shoulder, eases the blow. “Kim Seokjin passed away forty-five years ago. Again, I'm so, so sorry.”

Yoongi cries even harder now. Hard enough that his knees give out and he lands on the ground in front of Namjoon— Kim Namjoon, his lover's descendant, fucking great-great-grandson. Some kid that barely looks like him, that doesn't share a single quality with him except maybe, maybe something in his big, round lips. And how annoying that he's right, that Seokjin would lose his mind over this, get such a kick out of it. Want to tell the world about 'Min Yoongi, time-traveler accidental and extraordinaire!'

(Yoongi left earth 110 years ago. For him, it's only been 5 months.)

i love a good trope, and what can i say? this was wildly enjoyable! the worldbuilding and plot were amazing, and this is the kind of feel-good slow burn i need more of in my life. i wouldn't exactly call this fluff, but it *is* gratifying to see yoongi slowly fall in love with jin in this one.

summary:

Jeon Seokjin has exactly four weeks to stop the impending engagement of his younger brother, doomed to a loveless marriage. The only way to stop it is to make a better match, more advantageous, more lucrative for the Jeon family. It's impossible. It's his only option.

Min Yoongi does not want, will never want, will never ever even consider, marriage. It's not in the cards. He's stubborn enough to achieve the total ban on marriage talks. Except maybe his grandmother is a little more stubborn than he is, and maybe she's determined to see him march down the aisle.

The chaebol arranged marriage au that exactly one and a half people asked for.

jeongguk looks at him like he’s meant to have some answer for that. but yoongi can only stare at jeongguk, replaying the words back in his head. and then, once the silence has stretched on long enough, yoongi begins laughing.

(or: yoongi wakes to find that his boyfriend has been switched with a version of himself from a parallel universe. he also finds that it’s impossible to not love jeongguk, no matter where or when he came from.)

hello! i guess this is a formal blog introduction. i'm vi, she/her, 22! i used to be on tumblr a lot back in the golden days of 2015-2016, and i've been wanting to come back for a little while now, so here i am!

i started this blog as place to gather all my favourite bts fics and ramble about writing. feel free to follow if you'd like a bunch of fic recs! i keep everything neat and organized under the #rec tag.

i'll eventually make a masterlist and a directory, but for now i'm super excited to get back into the platform and meet some friends!
