Seeing from his violent demeanour that he was English, they gave him a ticket for the furthest station on the way thither that the train reached.

People are being so harsh on these poor station clerks!! These people saw some dude sprinting towards them, looking like he fell out of a salon window into a bog probably, ranting and raving in English and broken bits of German, probably sobbing, looking like actual death, piling some super-ancient looking currency onto their counter (???) and sure went, ah yes, The English are at it again -

but the key word in that sentence is thither. They weren’t thinking “yikes, let’s get this dude as far away from us as possible asap”, they turned to their colleagues and went “shit guys, this poor man must be terribly lost! I haven’t the faintest how to get him home but England is to the north west of here, yeah? So idk let’s just put him on the train that goes the furthest that way, godspeed you weird little dude” and i just think that’s lovely
