Jaejin’s eyes sharpened as the figure emerged from the haze, his grip on the Nagamaki tightening despite the weight that dragged at his limbs. his mind racing with potential threats. His body tensed, ready for a fight despite the poison gnawing at his strength. His lungs burned with every breath, and each step felt heavier than the last. He could barely focus, but the voice reached him—clear, yet distant. The words, "I'm not here to fight," didn’t offer much comfort. In a place like the Poisoned Gardens, where survival came before trust, Jaejin couldn’t afford to be careless.
"Stay back!" he rasped, his voice harsh, laced with suspicion. The poison had already taken its toll, and though he was still standing, he knew his body was on the verge of collapse. He couldn’t risk this stranger getting too close. “I don’t need your help. I’ve been here long enough to handle it.”
But the truth burned more than the poison in his lungs. He had lost his supplies the first night—an accident he cursed himself for again and again. His water had spilled across the cursed soil, and his bag of antidotes was swept away in a skirmish with a creature that had ambushed him from the shadows. Three days of battling the poison with nothing to slow it down had turned survival into a cruel game of endurance, one he knew he was losing.
“How long have you been here? The poison in this area can be quite… deadly.”
The question hung in the air, and Jaejin’s breath hitched. He tried to respond with defiance, tried to maintain that edge, but instead, a bitter laugh escaped his lips. It turned into a hacking cough, and he could feel the poison eating away at him with every ragged inhale. His chest heaved as he took another strained breath, trying to maintain the stoic front, but he couldn’t ignore the trembling in his legs, the way his vision swam more with each passing minute.
"Three days," he finally managed, his voice cracking under the weight of exhaustion. His body trembled, but he held his ground, unwilling to appear weak. "Three days, and it feels like it's been a lifetime."
finally his resolve broke. “I… I’ve run out of everything. No antidotes, no water…” he muttered, his voice softer now, breaking as he leaned against a twisted vine, his skin burning where it made contact, but he didn’t care anymore. Desperation seeped into his voice, the cracks in his defenses becoming impossible to hide. "I came here… to prove myself... but this place… it’s tearing me apart."
His eyes flickered up, catching the stranger’s gaze. His pride was screaming at him not to ask, but the desperation outweighed it. "Can you help me?". He couldn't die here, no- he refused to die here.
sanghyun has heard of the poisoned gardens before and being in there has left sanghyun feeling even more wary about his movements. while he seems to be better equipped for such an environment, he knows that not everyone is that lucky, which is why he’s relieved to bring in a few items to help him in case the worst outcome were to happen to him.
as he continued to tread along the beautiful but possibly harmful plants in search of a specific flower he’s heard of before (but never saw unfortunately), sanghyun could hear a voice from a distance. the man stood still, contemplating over his next plan of action before mentally preparing himself for a possible fight against something or someone (he really didn’t want to fight in a place like this, but he was willing to take the risk if nevessary). taking a few more cautious steps, he soon spotted a familiar figure.
while his mind was quickly trying to recall where he had last seen the other, sanghyun admitted out loud, “i’m not here to fight.” right when he wanted to explain why he was there, he took note of something that caught his attention. “how long have you been here? the poison in this area can be quite… deadly.” he assumed the younger was in the gardens in search of something, but he didn’t want to assume too quickly and wanted to focus more on helping him survive in such an environment.
