Anders' story and the mages plight theme in general will always be very personal for me, bc how well it works as a transgender allegory. If you're born different, no matter what you do, you're fucked. Society will make sure to make your life as hard as possible. Neither circle mages nor apostates are happy. Neither closeted trans people nor openly trans people are happy. You have to choose between "safety" and "freedom" but in the end you receive none. Damn, even the word "abomination" is being used against both groups. There are people among both communities who think compliance to conservative society demands is a better choice than fighting it. And people who understand that compliance will lead to only one outcome - extermination. The government taking your children away may be fictional for mages, but it is very real for trans people. Both transgenders and mages are considered a disgrace to their families, a curse, a dirty secret. Both get disowned. Or sometimes something much worse happens. Parents try to "cure" their children from both magic and transness. And for all the reasons listed above and more than that, da2 will always be my favorite game. Because in the end of the game, there is hope. Mages are united more than ever, and at least for a time, they are free. The perspective of a better future for both mages existing and those who aren't even born yet is finally real. Almost no one believed Anders will succeed. And Anders himself didn't believe he would live long enough to see the results of his actions. And yet, he is alive in the end. And what is even more important, not alone.

“It hurts,” Valia groaned as he eased her down on the cold, hard floor of her hallway.
Oranna and Bodahn hurried towards them as they heard the door bursting open. She, let out a shriek at the view of Hawke’s bloodied body. Bodahn, swore. “Messere! What happened?”
“A Coterie ambush as we were coming home.” Anders had carried her away from the fight, which had erupted a few streets from there. Her friends were probably still fighting out there as he had brought her to safety.
She was severely wounded.
Anders sent Oranna and Bodahn looking for poultices and water basins and then kneeled down next to her, roaming his hands above her to check for all the injuries he could not see. She had been thrown against a wall by a mage. Among other things.
“It fucking hurts,” she groaned again.
“I know, love. Hang on. It will get better, I promise.”
Her eyes were starting to close. “Sleep. I wanna sleep,”
He jerked her awake with his magic. “Don’t.”
“Hey stop!” she cried out in surprise. She hated when he did that. The sensation was irking. “That’s not fair. Lemme sleep…” She tried to push away his hands but could barely move her arm.
“No, I can’t let you do that. You have to stay with me.” Her pulse was weakening. “Focus, Hawke. Sleeping is bad right now. It’s very bad.”
“Of course you’re the one saying that.”
“What do you mean?” He said distractedly, anything to keep her talking and not passing out. If she lost consciousness now, he wasn’t sure he would be able to bring her back.
“You never sleep.”
“That’s not true. I slept here yesterday. And I’ll stay and sleep here tonight if you behave.”
She snorted but hissed right after. The pain came in waves, and sometimes it was almost unbearable. And her eyelids were so very heavy. Sleeping felt like such a good idea right now. “Can’t stay awake,” she mumbled as her eyes closed again, “just a minute, Anders.”
He used the same magic trick as before, and she grunted loudly. “Maker’s balls, you’re annoying.”

yeah! i also saw some hawke concept art where they’ve got it, and i honestly think it was designed for them. it’s simply a weird choice for anders’ starting stave when it’s distinctly canine in design haha

Finally, my Soldier OC Anders. I based his clothes on uniform of the Norwegian resistance in WWII. As an additional weapon, I decided to give him a harpoon, as a reference to his previous job.
