blood of the covenant/water of the womb

The Black sisters are so tragic.

I mean, imagine:

As kids, Narcissa is the baby sister that the elder two dote on, while both Narcissa and Andromeda look up to Bellatrix, the proud, beautiful, powerful, accomplished, perfect eldest sister, who has always known who she is and where she's going, but especially Andromeda, since they look so alike she's always been encouraged to act like her too but since Narcissa doesn't have the stereotypical Black looks and her parents didn't follow the Black naming scheme she's encouraged to be her own person a little bit more.

At Hogwarts they're all Sorted into the same House, Slytherin, which only increases their bond. Bella does really well at school, probably the top of her class, which makes Andy, who's only a year or two behind hyperaware of where the bar is. She walks, talks, and dresses like Bella.

Until

Andy follows in Bella's footsteps (who's probably Head Girl by now) and becomes a prefect, but she gets assigned to do rounds with a Muggle-born Hufflepuff. And despite everything she'd been taught, everything she knows to be true, she finds herself falling for him and the worst part is she can't tell anyone, even Bella, the one she has always been able to confide in, always reassured her and set her on the right path.

Meanwhile Druella and Cygnus are arranging Bellatrix's marriage to Roldophus, someone she doesn't even like never mind attracted to but because she's the perfect Black and the perfect daughter she has to do it. And Andromeda sees and fears how she could get trapped, too, how there's another Lestrange boy in her year.

Meanwhile a strange foreign Dark Lord comes to dinner and he's so different to Roldophus and all those other men who think because she's a woman she must be weak and she's just a vessel for their pureblood children. And despite the way she shouldn't feel this way, Bella doesn't care. He listens to Bella's opinions and he takes her seriously and he sees her magical talent and her thirst to prove herself and he's not scared of her in the way others say that she's 'too intense.' And when he offers to train her, and adds that he never does this, she says, one better, I'll follow you.

Andromeda and Narcissa watch this strange man burn the Dark Mark into their sister's arm and they don't know what to think. Narcissa's scared Bella will put herself in danger, that she'll do too much, give too much of herself because she doesn't know when to pull back. And Andy's scared Bella's going down a path she cannot follow, because deep down she can't say she believes in blood supremacy, can't say she hates Ted and she can't figure out a way through so she leaves.

It's like part of Bella's heart has been ripped out. They were all close, the Blacks, but Andy and Bella had a certain je ne sais quoi, they were thick as thieves and inseparable. Bellatrix is the one who burns Andromeda off the tapestry, crying while she does it, the scorned love for her sister, the anger and shame that Andy chose that Mudblood over her turning that love to bottomless hate.

Meanwhile Narcissa, the lucky one, watches it all. Narcissa is the one that gets it all, she's the only one who's able to marry for love and stay with her family but there's also this Andromeda-shaped hole in her and there's a Slytherin resentfulness of being Bellatrix's supporting act.

Every night that Bella is on a mission, Narcissa stays up, even while pregnant with Draco, until she knows her sister is safe.

That fateful Halloween she waits and waits and waits but Bellatrix never comes home. When she finds out her last remaining sister is serving life she completely breaks down. Won't sleep, won't eat. The thought of leaving Draco without a mother is the only thing that helps her hold on. Regulus, Andromeda and Sirius are dead/burned off the tapestry/imprisoned; she and Draco are the last Blacks, that makes their bond even stronger, makes her scared of losing him like she did her sisters. She curses Voldemort for putting her in danger, aware of her feelings for him and that Bella would do anything for them, swears she'll never let that happen to her son.

All the while Andy raises her daughter, who hates the name she gave her in the same way Andy know she would hate the Blacks. Narcissa and Andy watch each other from across crowds; Tonks and Draco are never at school together, never know more than scattered off-hand mentions of a cousin on their mother's side. But both Narcissa and Andy fantasize of a reconcilation, of Tonks babysitting Draco while they rekindle their bond. Neither bridges the gap. That burn, that rift cannot be healed. But they still ache for each other.

When Voldemort returns that fear for Draco grows, but it's tempered with the joy of having Bella back after mourning her for 14 years -- Bella, traumatized, starved, jagged and torn up at the edges, different, but alive.

And just like knowing he was innocent kept Sirius sane, Bella's love and trust of Voldemort is what made her able to hang on. Yes, they're both drastically different physically (the snake face and the emaciation) and mentally (both shaken, less confident), but everything else can be the same. Maybe better.

But everyone is scared. It's not the same world, where the Death Eaters have control and are undefeated. Voldemort is scared of that boy, Narcissa is scared for Draco. It's clear things are not the same, things are not normal. Far from it. Fear makes Voldemort angry, and cold, and distant and nothing she does feels good enough.

And that boy -- lying hateful filthy boy -- he dares suggest that her Voldemort's filthy-blooded like him. No, he must just be taunting her, scaring her. But there are things Voldemort's said, things he's done -- she would notice, the way she hangs on every word he speaks and plays their conversations in her head over and over again in Azkaban -- Bellatrix just does her best to silence it and block it out, all these confusing things, she's a great Occlumens after all.

She'll make things certain, make things right, trim off the weakness, cut out the sickness. Like Sirius. Like that young woman with Andromeda's face and Andromeda's laugh, that filthy half-blood Andy left her to create.

Narcissa can't keep Draco safe like she, the baby sister, couldn't keep Bellatrix safe. When Voldemort burns the Dark Mark into his skin she sees her son emaciated and dead-eyed.

To assuage Narcissa's fears Bellatrix trains Draco like Voldemort trained her; but he's not the same, he's weak, he's moralistic, he looks at her with wide scared eyes and he's a failure. The glory of the Blacks is gone.

All the while, Narcissa's fear grows, when Lucius is imprisoned, when Voldemort's ire turns on her family, on her son, sets him an impossible task. The despair she feels, she hasn't felt for nearly sixteen years -- Bellatrix more interested in eking out morsels of approval from Voldemort and turning her frustration on Draco, and Narcissa by extension.

All the while, Andromeda's fear for her daughter grows, of the danger she puts herself in as an Auror and a member of the Order, and she's reminded of Bellatrix, of how she gives everything of herself and how Nymphadora does too, begging, begging her to hold back.

She's not good enough for him, not with the sickness, the weakness still clinging to her. Bellatrix very much wants to kill the woman with Andy's face. She's always been perfect. It's everyone else around her that's wrong, everyone else who has to go. She'll do better. Try harder.

And when the Snatchers catch that filthy boy, and he slides out of her grasp like a buttered eel, Bellatrix hits the bottom rung of the ladder of despair. She doesn't know who she is, anymore.

Voldemort's retaliation and rejection breaks Bellatrix's heart, but it hardens Narcissa's.

Bellatrix will do anything to make him happy. She finally kills the witch with Andy's face -- do you see -- do you love me now -- but he's still cold, still frightened, still different, and she despairs, but it will be all over when Harry Potter is dead and he can breathe again. They've won. It will be alright. It will go back to normal. She can have it all again -- Voldemort and Narcissa and her perfect, pruned family.

Narcissa will do anything to keep him safe. And so she chooses Draco's life, she lies, her heart in her throat, in front of her beloved sister, to the Dark Lord, with unshed tears in her eyes and Harry Potter's 'corpse' before her.

Bellatrix's death is something Narcissa knew was coming, deep down She mourned her sister sixteen years ago and she mourns her now, but it will all be worth it if Draco survives this ordeal; Potter must win, he must live, Voldemort must die. And Bellatrix will never allow this.

She wishes she could tell Andy that she understands.

And if I say that the reason everybody calls Andromeda Andy is because of Narcissa. If I say it’s because Narcissa couldn’t pronounce her full name as a baby and she became Andy.

She remembers a time when there were no sides, a time when her hands weren't drenched in blood and her soul bounded to the mark on her arm.

She dreams of simpler times, of laughter and of a family that could withstand storms.

So, when Narcissa Black's life is torn apart by sirens of war and treachery; she takes it upon herself to protect what matters the most, her family.

Andromeda and Sirius Black

I was going to make this short and sweet, but once I started typing I couldn’t stop. so here’s a lengthy read on my (re) newest obsession. about 99% canon complaint. not every good with numbers, me.

my headcanon is that one of the reasons andromeda and sirius got along so well during family functions is that they both loved music. musical geniuses both of them. (maybe sirius picked it up from andromeda who always played the piano/violin whenever she got her hands on one and he started picking up on it too).

i don’t think andy married ted right after hogwarts. she gave birth to tonks at 20 or 21 old. so that give her about six years after hogwarts to secretly get to know ted and muggle london. so sirius and andromeda spent the holidays together when their families celebrated. while i do think she kept ted a secret from everyone, sirius started suspecting something. cause she’d sneak her and sirius out of the family celebration to go see broadway west end musicals.

and she knew her way around muggle london far too well. he cleverly tries getting her to spill the tea but she’s far more clever about it. keeping her muggleborn boyfriend a secret from her nosy sisters and her bigoted parents keep her on her toes. she’s not going to slip up her to nosy thirteen year old cousin so matter how much she likes him.

so anyways, she takes him to a musical and sirius is so suprised. first of all, he’s got so much new musical material to obsess over. secondly, he’s so curious about how muggles are setting everything up. (he’s taken a good look, there’s no charms no transfiguration no magic involved at all). he gets so curious he has to know. so next year at hogwarts, he takes muggle studies to learn more to the detriment of his parents.

no one tells sirius that andromeda left. it happens about two years later when he’s at hogwarts. and it seems to him that everyone found out before he did. he’s getting snide remarks from the pure bloods that run in the same circle as his family. nobody tells him what’s happened. not his mother or his father. not bella (not even to make fun of his close relationship to a blood traitor which is weird because that’s one of her favorite pastimes). not narcissa but she certainly didn’t have a problem writing to regulus and letting him know. and certainly not andy.

the last he’s seen her was the summer before fifth year when they snuck out into muggle London and she confessed to him that bellatrix took the dark mark. and how her parents wanted her to marry a lestrange and take the dark mark too since bella had set the precedent. and all he can think of now is what the final straw was for andy. but he doesn’t know because nobody in the family said anything to him. eventually he seeks out regulus (looong story here because these two cannot have a civil conversation for more than 3 minutes) but eventually regulus takes pity on him and give him the tea. but that’s the last time he’s heard anything about andromeda black. nobody has seen her since. and nobody has heard from her since. not even him, to his sorrow.

when he goes home that summer there’s a surprise awaiting him. he’s expected to take the dark mark now that he’s sixteen years old. again thanks to bella for setting the precedent. he’s obviously refusing. but he doesn’t know where to go. james is pretty angry with him over the prank he pulled on snape. remus avoids him eyes. peter ducks him head every time he sees sirius. the one ally he had was his cousin andy but he doesn’t know how to reach her. he knows that she’s now andromeda tonks but that’s all. it’s so frustrating and heartbreaking.

the night before he’s supposed to be taken to get the dark mark, he leaves. there’s shouting, there’s items being thrown, there’s tears, there’s pleas. but he leaves anyway. he knows him and james are at odds but james would never turn him away. he was his best friend dammit. and he knew deep in heart despite remus and peter choosing james over him, that james was just as miserable without sirius as sirius was without him …

… and he wasn’t wrong. the moment james saw sirius in his foyer, there was nothing but tears and laughter and all was forgiven between the two. and that ended up being one of the best summers they had.

andy didn’t know about sirius leaving and being disowned. she was married to a muggleborn and she knew some members of her family would eventually come after her. so she and ted quietly left the wizarding world. she wanted to reach out to sirius — she truly did — but by the time she and ted settled down and found a safe place to live, she was expecting a baby girl. she had new priorities now.

andy has a lot of regrets about that. she finds out in the obituary that regulus died. she didn’t know about her uncle Alphard leaving gold to sirius and being wiped off the tapestry. she just find his obituary in the daily prophet and is saddened. he was her favorite. he was very funny and always made her laugh. she finds out about sirius in the daily prophet. just as the war ends and she’s finally breathes a sigh of relief that her family is spared, she reaches for the newspaper and sees sirius’s face staring back at her. ted looks over her shoulder to see what caught her attention. he tries consoling her but she just shrugs everything off Iike it means nothing. it’s only when she’s alone that she allows herself to think and cry. she blames herself obviously. if only she reached out to him instead of leaving him to fend for himself without her. if only she hasn’t introduced him to muggle London … now he’s kiIIed 13 of them. he was just like them.

years later, when he escapes azkaban, she’s truly afraid. if he came after her husband, she wouldn’t know what to do. she only finds out the truth after the second war. and she’s truly going through it now.

first that sirius was innocent the whole time and she doubted him. why did she do that? why was she so quick to believe he could have behaved like that?

second that her daughter knew he was innocent and kept it from her!

third that remus lupin sat at her dinning table and lied to her face when he said he didn’t know how sirius died or who kiIIed him.

fourth that regulus regulus was one of the first people who tried to bring the Dark Lord down. while he was a death eater. at seventeen!

fifth that narcissa did the same. narcissa lied to the Dark Lord and saved Harry Potter. narcissa dammit. her selfish, self serving sister did that. she didn’t know how to feel.

sixth that it was bella who kiIIed sirius. sirius who was innocent the whole damn time and was a member of the order of the phoenix. how could have bella done that?

seventh that bella also kiIIed her daughter. her daughter. her sister kiIIed her daughter. and all of this happened while she sat at home safe and sound. she would never forgive herself.

she always was burdened by having Black blood. she always hated it. but the Blacks of her generation did more for both wars than she could have ever imagined. she sat there thinking they were all cowards for not being as brave as her for leaving their bigoted family legacy behind. but every single one of them played a vital part in ending the war. sirius, regulus, and narcissa. hell even her daughter, dora, and her sister’s son, draco. she would never ever forgive herself.

DNA Guarantee by Kodi Rhianna is Black Family coded

- more under the cut -

The first stanza gives me the vibes of Alphard, Andie, and Sirius deciding to leave and begging for their siblings to follow. The Black family drains everything unique about it's children and makes soilders, and those three didn't want to be. They tried for so long to change (beating a long dead horse) but being apart of the Black family is a life sentence.

The chorus is everyone. All of them are trapped in a cycle until they break it. "Never your baby, just a maybe," they never had kids to have kids. It was always for heirs. The Blood purity, so forth eeee

The middle stanza is Sirius and Regulus and Walburga.

It's between them and Walburga in the first part. Sirius and Regulus reminding Walburga of Alphard and herself - one trapped and lashing out and one desperately fleeing. Its also difficult because of how similar all three are - forced into positions, unhappy, lashing out. I would image that if they interacted as older, Sirius and Walburga still would have issues due to this. Even if she doesn't or didn't hit them with her hand, spells and words do it best.

It's between Regulus and Sirius in the second part. The dogs biting the bone is Sirius messing everything up with Remus and the others. "Daughter bites her words," Regulus not coming out as FmT for years due to fear. "Fight like wolves, then flee like birds," Whenever the brothers fight it's always vicious, pulling at old wounds and cruel - like their family. Then they both realize, fleeing before the other says something. "From the save pack but rivaling herds," the brothers come from the same family, but in the end have vastly different friends.

I also just imagine that when it doesn't get physical, the family does have screaming matches often. Cops would be called, the whole thing. Very early the kids learned they could use their words effectively against each other even if they couldn't against their parents. I imagine that while close, the boys and girls had a battle of shouts at least once a day (then sneak each other treats to make up for it.)

I could also imagine Sirius and Regulus trying to settle into the Potters and realizing how intertwined their family is in them. And also Reg and Sirius have to stomp to the back of the garden to have their arguments - they cannot not have them, because then they get waaaay worse.
