this started out as my experimenting with different fashion inspirations for the Vale using Sansa Alayne. The first sketch is inspired by ca. 9th century Frankish fashion, because that’s what I used to headcannon for the Vale. I still really like the aesthetic side of it, but with the Vale’s heavy focus on chivalry and knightly ideals, I wanted to try out a more “classic” medieval look. Basically, the first thing I would have thought of as a child if you had asked me about medieval fashion. Which brings me to sketch two, which is said “classic” medieval look and inspired by 13th century European fashion. The third features a dress from an illustration by Tom Tierney I found and should be around 1200 to 1350, not really sure though. And the fourth sketch is inspired by a 12th century hair style featuring a basic kirtle.

While I was working on this however it went from “let’s see which fashion inspiration fits the Vale” to more of a “I wanna draw Sansa in pretty clothes”. So here’s a bonus Sansa in early 16th century German fashion and classic Tully colours.

I know that Naerys' style can be summed up as "Less is More", but I think it was a good symbolism of how she was forced to live a life that not only was not for her but she never wanted it, I think she was always adequate to be a septa, the birth was a danger for her, besides that her husband was an abusive monster and it does not seem that he has done much as queen but it was impossible to influence the politics of the seven kingdoms much if your husband is Aegon the unworthy, but I feel that would show how Viserys was so disconnected from his own children that he didn't really know them, he married his fragile daughter to the son that he knew was a womanizer and that he mistreated her already at that time and allowed his other much more noble son join in an order that requires celibacy and relinquish his right of succession rather than force Aegon the Unworthy to do such a thing and make Aemon his heir; and he might also want to make Naerys happy by giving her something that he considers beautiful based on the tastes of other women close to him (Rhaenyra, Rhaena and Daenaera) but not his own daughter. Anyway your interpretation is beautiful, it's a quite suitable silent luxury dress for Naerys.

Hello I know this question is very silly but come on do you think Naerys was allowed to choose her wedding dress which is possibly simple and white or Viserys decided to be a shitty father again and not let her or decide what to wear in the worst day of her life, and made her wear something extravagant like purple dress with gold embroidery, pearls and Myr lace or something, accompanied by a crown and jewels to demonstrate the power of the iron throne and because she didn't want her daughter to show off like a septa?

Hey this is not a silly question at all! Honestly I’ve seen some pretty neat interpretations of Naerys’ outfits in general, but I have to admit I do find interpretations of her wedding gown to be pretty interesting! While it would be nice if she at least got a say in what she’d wear for one of the worst days of her life, I’m pretty inclined to believe that she unfortunately got no say because… Well, it’s one of the worst days of her life, she didn’t exactly have anything to look forward to. Though I doubt Viserys comissioned a dress with the express purpose of making his daughter miserable, I think it was more something along the lines of him… Just not knowing her all that well.

In my own previous art piece I definitely tried to push that interpretation a little bit. Overall, the dress is decently simple- a white satin gown with a cream coloured underdress- they’re simple, pretty light colours that I’m sure Naerys dressed in a lot during her childhood. But the rest of her gown is where it derails from what was likely her personal style: There’s gold lining everywhere, heavily embroidered with grandiose symbols of the seven and dragons and topped with pearls and light yellow silk- it’s Naerys yeah, but in the most superficial way one could imagine her. Not saying that those things are bad! But I don’t think dressing to that level of extravagance is really what Naerys herself would like going off her canon descriptions.

In any case that is just my interpretation of things! As always feel free to form your own opinion, and none of this is really canon to the books!

Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen.

Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen.

Diamonds, pearls and rubies. Gold and velvets.

For this one I was inspired by Italian Renaissance.

The fashions are less severe and the lines rounded.

Scoop necklines adorned with jewels, lavish pieces of jewelry in house colors.

Tall headpieces adorned with embroidery and precious stones. Hairnets to adorn, not contain the hair, which is kept loose most of the time.

Still some of the Black's and Green's fashions mix with each other when it comes to sleeves and capes.

So the Baratheons have heavier fabrics since having lightweight fabrics would be very impractical with the stormy weather at Storms End, it’s hard to tell but the dresses are supposed to be ankle length as opposed to full length or dragging since the ground would be quite wet. I based the sillohette of the dresses of of traditional Turkish, Greek, and Hungarian dresses. They have heavily embroidered trims and employ use of gold and brass clasps and decorations. And obviously so. many. deer.

“[Would he] become the Lord of Winterfell? It seemed an easy choice when he thought of it in those terms . . . though if Ygritte had still been alive, it might have been even easier.” - Jon XII ASOS

Part 1 in any crown design series, art by: @nataa.draws on twit

[Would He] Become The Lord Of Winterfell? It Seemed An Easy Choice When He Thought Of It In Those Terms
[Would He] Become The Lord Of Winterfell? It Seemed An Easy Choice When He Thought Of It In Those Terms

For about a year, I have been thinking about creating a series of artworks with my designs of crowns that either canonically existed in the ASOIAF universe but went without description (Ceryse’s crown, Jaehaera’s crown, Naerys’s crown, etc.) or crowns that could have existed but didn’t due to deaths of the ladies involved or a break in betrothal (the Ygritte one above and a Sansa QOT7K crown, which is what I’m hoping to do after this one). The only problem is, I’m awful at drawing! The design I can get down to the smallest detail and envision it in my head, but it simply doesn’t translate to paper. And because this is a series rather than one piece, it was a bit difficult to find an artist that both drew jewelry like I envisioned and also could make a commitment for an ongoing project. Luckily, I did end up finding Nata, which I was SO happy about because she was somehow able to commit exactly what I was envisioning on paper, and for that I’m so grateful. She is a lovely and talented woman.

I do want to talk about the designs a little bit, because I have been working on it for so long and absolutely in love with it, but I do want to make one thing clear first. This is not necessarily ship art, and the crowns I work with Nata in the future most certainly will not be. The relationship between Jon and Ygritte is problematic at best, and the other Queens I have mentioned above have even more abusive relationships with their husbands/betrothed (with the exception of Jaehaera and Aegon III, whose relationship was practically nonexistent and the problematic elements came from the situation and not from either of them individually). The focus of this series is on jewelry and designs that reflect the culture the person is from and their personality, rather than their relationship to their husbands. So I hope even if Ygritte and Jon are your NOTP and/or if you absolutely despise Ygritte, I hope you can still appreciate the art and cultural influences. The art was originally just supposed to include the crown and therefore be up for interpretation of it was Ygritte or Val’s, but I got carried away with the dress design I had thought of and because it was green which goes beautifully with red hair, I went ahead and asked for Nataa to draw Ygritte.

Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, I can talk about the design, which I’m sooooo excited about. The main idea was the merging of Freefolk and Northern culture, but I still did want to remain relatively true to the 15th to 16th century English time period that ASOIAF is roughly centered around. I understand the idea that Ygritte would never be caught dead in such a thing, but you must understand!!!! Jon designed it for her himself when preparing to ask for her hand. So she grumbled and griped, but was secretly chuffed, so she wears it. From the beginning, the main element that I think Ygritte needed if expected to wear a dress is that she needs lots of furs lining it. Not only because of the cold, but also as a symbol of where she came from the make her feel more comfortable in her skin. The puffs are meant to be general fashion at the time, something more common in the Vale or the Reach, but I imagine that could be more of a Sansa influence on the North. The emeralds’ only purpose is to contrast and compliment Ygritte’s hair and to show the wealth of the dynasty. There are two different weirwood embroideries implemented in the dress design: the one on the top that is by the wolf, which of course represents the Stark dynasty that she has now married into, and the bigger weirwood at the base of the dress which has mammoths walking underneath it. Mammoths are one of the symbols of the Freefolk, and weirwoods are very sacred to both the Northern people and the Freefolk, and their shared religion following the Old Gods. I imagine that when Jon was designing this dress for Ygritte, he was more attentive and involved than men in this universe usually were, and his ultimate goal was her comfort and for her to feel included in her new position instead of feeling like a commodity for Jon and the North.

As for the crown, which was the reason for the commission in the first place, I wanted it to follow the same general design as the King of the North crown. I know there’s lots of different ideas of different crowns Jon could adopt as King of the North instead of somehow either regaining possession of or replicating his brother’s crown, but there were way too many options and it made my head spin, so we’re doing this. So the structure of the crown is the same, but the main difference is that instead of being made of metal, this crown is made of weirwood. Of course, weirwood is very special to both cultures, but I figured that metal wouldn’t impressive Ygritte or her culture as much as weirwood would. Therefore, the texture is very different. There are emeralds around it to compensate the lack of metal and extra agency, and to give the crown more of a feminine look as well as to compliment Ygritte’s hair. The tops of each bar are meant to look white and as if capped by snow. This is meant to symbolize the Beyond the Wall influence and I was also thinking about the Crown of Winter when creating this part of the design. The Crown of Winter was given up by Torrhen Stark when yielding to Aegon the Conqueror. We aren’t given a description of it, but I have always imagined it having those snow caps and generally being mostly white. I’ve thought of Jon bringing back the design of the Crown of Winter, but because we have so little to go off of, I chose for there just to be a small influence included instead of going off nothing and trying to create something from scratch. Lastly, there’s the three engraving in the middle. The two mammoths are meant to show who Ygritte is, where she’s come from. She is a member of the Freefolk, and becoming a Northern Lady is not meant to erase that or get her hide that part of her (not that she’d ever agree to that anyway), but it is a part of her and a part of the future of the North merging together. There’s a wolf in the middle as well, because she’s married in to that family and she is a representation of the Starks. But her and Jon and their resulting family is part Stark, part Freefolk, and both of those cultures are meant to be displayed and remembered. The next generation is a merger of the Freefolk and their ideals, and the the traditions of the North.

Okay, that is all, thank you so much if you read all of this! I loved working on this so much and I want to thank Nata again, because she did an amazing job. I hope this is enjoyable to someone else like it’s enjoyable to me. I think the idea of Ygritte as Queen of the North is hilarious, although probably bad for the health of Northern Lords. I can’t even imagine what unhinged things she would do, or how violent archery practice could become. The only thing I can say in her favor is that I think she would get along great with Rickon and be a good (well depends on what you think a good upbringing is, manners would lack, but I think he would be happy) mother figure to him. They would be the worst duo to terrorize Winterfell. I also like to think that Theon and her, although she would not like him, could build up some sort of beneficial relationship between them and she could help him regain his strength and his love of archery, because that is something they share. Anyway, I’ll see you soonish with my next commission ^_^

Many fans often envision The Conquerors in a Byzantine fashion, and it's quite fitting. The Byzantine Empire, also known as the Eastern Roman Empire, persisted as the continuation of the Roman Empire, surviving the challenges that led to the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century AD. Similarly, The Conquerors, the Targaryen family, survived the Doom of Valyria, making them the heirs and continuation of the Valyrian Freehold.

SO, If we picture ancient Valyrians donning attire akin to 1st-century Romans, like stolla dresses and palla cloaks for women and togas for men, it logically follows that The Conquerors, as inheritors of the empire, would don Byzantine clothing in their portrayal.

NOW! although the 6th-century Byzantine imperial costume boasts simplicity in silhouette, draping, and cut, it is truly elevated by its lavish bejeweled and embellished details.

Take, for instance, Empress Theodora's state costume: a white stola adorned with intricate gold and jewel embellishments at the hem, a purple paludamentum heavily embroidered with a luxurious gold border, and a prominently jeweled collar crowning the cloak—an iconic symbol of Byzantine fashion. Completing her regal ensemble is a headdress with cascading ropes of pearls. Meanwhile, her ladies in waiting don similar attire, albeit with fewer embellishments.

All in all, Byzantine fashion is all about garments embroidered with gold and adorned with pearls and jewels.

And it is this extravagant opulence I wanna see The Conquerors in - Aegon adorned in a blood-red paludamentum pinned gracefully on his right shoulder, while Visenya and Rhaenys don heavily bejeweled collars and intricate hairstyles.

Many Fans Often Envision The Conquerors In A Byzantine Fashion, And It's Quite Fitting. The Byzantine

However, it doesn't have to be overly historically accurate. I believe that as long as certain 'iconic' Byzantine fashion elements are incorporated, the silhouette can be altered. Take, for example, the 19th-century depictions of Empress Theodora:

Many Fans Often Envision The Conquerors In A Byzantine Fashion, And It's Quite Fitting. The Byzantine

Many Fans Often Envision The Conquerors In A Byzantine Fashion, And It's Quite Fitting. The Byzantine

While most of them lack accuracy (with Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant's version being the closest to historical credibility), they successfully capture the essence of luxury, gold, and opulence.

Conclusion: I think if I were to draw The Conqueror sisters, I wouldn't necessarily adhere strictly to the historically accurate shapeless, modest silhouette. However, I would definitely strive to convey the essence of luxury and ornamentation in my depiction.

Melisandre and Selyse. They stand close to one another, Melisandre in red hanfu-style robes with golden flames at the shoulders, cuffs, and coming up from the hems. Selyse wears a blue Tudor-style gown including a French hood. Her underskirt has a pattern of blue flowers and a silver pendant with a fox on it hangs from her waist. Melisandre's hands are hidden in her sleeves, she smiles slightly and gazes towards the fire. Selyse's eyes are closed and her mouth is open, rapturous. Selyse's hand is pressed to her chest, beneath her fingers is a heart shaped brooch. Melisandre has a tall guan in her hair that looks like flames, gold earrings, and a red necklace. Selyse wears a lot of gold and yellow jewelry. The background is blue, but Selyse and Melisandre are outlined in yellow, and reds and yellows approximate flames on the left side of the picture, the direction they are facing.

Im Obsesed With Costume Designing Willas Tyrell And Oberyn Martell. I'd Give Oberyn A Red/bruised Purple/black

im obsesed with costume designing willas tyrell and oberyn martell. i'd give oberyn a red/bruised purple/black dupatta with snake and subtle dragon motifs (fire and blood and all that). otherwise, dripping in rubies (i know it's a bolton thing, but i'm obsessed with the bleeding spear). and willas just has to match margaery tyrell's first wedding dress, thorns and all.

hi! so I heard that you're an expert on costuming, particularly in asoiaf and I was wondering if you knew of any multiple sources to go to for some costumes or fashion that the characters of asoiaf would wear. Like a certain Tumblr, tv show, Pinterest board, movie idk lol any ideas?

Hi! Personally I interpret ASOIAF in terms of early medieval fashion (post-Roman), but that’s likely because I’m much more fluent in classical history than medieval. In reality there are many, many different ways to imagine ASOIAF. Many of the womens’ descriptions sound more early renaissance—GRRM’s extensive use of lace, for instance. I’ve even seen compelling arguments for ASOIAF mirroring Elizabethan styles (Game of Thrones did this with Braavos).

Keep in mind that while GRRM claims to strive for “historical accuracy,” there’s really no baseline of accuracy for a fantasy series, at least not with the way GRRM describes clothing. It’s all over the place. Which is fine! He’s not a fashion historian. As such, I’ll include a wide range of references in trying to answer your question. I hope it helps get you started, and that you are inspired to keep exploring!

Research

I threw together some ideas for the different regions/cultures in ASOIAF. Again, you’ll come across things that aren’t faithful to…whatever medieval period GRRM references, but this is the nature of fantasy (and preliminary research). I tried accounting for class differences as well as fashions blending into different regions; i.e.: the Stormlands sharing a border with Dorne, or the Reach and the Westerlands. Again, design is subjective, so simply use these ideas as a jumping off point.

These are focused on the middle ages, but there is something to be gained by studying the patterns of classical civilisations as well. I recommend What People Wore When for a visual study on the history of fashion.
