A little rant about Ataru from Urusei yatsura and all the hate he gets

Personally, I love Ataru. Heās my favourite character. I genuinely enjoy him and love how heās different than other MCās. But here I sort of want to DEFEND Ataru and how he acts.
Is Ataru a good person? Far from. But thatās what makes him interesting. Heās not a good person. He had a wandering eye when he was dating Shinobu. Thatās not good. Heās Pervy but then again heās in an anime.
Now onto him and lum. People usually shit on Ataru from how he treats Lum but in my opinionā¦heās sort ofā¦justified?.. I mean, lum likes Ataru for misunderstanding that Ataru DID explain to her in the end but she still didnāt leave Ataru alone (I love Lum btw)
āAtaru should be more mindful of Lumās feelings!ā Ok? He explained to her and she still didnāt listen. Thereās only so much niceness he can show until it gets annoying. Ataru isnāt a good person but donāt act as if you wouldnāt be treating Lum like that as well if you guys were Ataru. Even if you wouldnāt you still would be slightly annoyed.
āHe flirts with people when Lumās aroundā he didnāt like Lum (at first). He didnāt need to change his behaviour. Lum wasnāt listening to him. (Iām not saying Ataru is allowed to be a pervy ass Iām just saying lum behind here isnāt enough reason for Ataru to change)
āhe did love lum! He cried when she left!ā Even though I do agree with you, did you watch the episode? He only missed lum when he realised how horrible his life was BEFORE Lum. No one is nice to him and lum was the only one who defends or is kind to him and quick to forgive.
Personally think, even thought Ataru does like Lum a part of him missed Lum solely because of the treatment he was getting. Let me ask you this.
Who in Ataruās life is nice to him?
His father? His mother? Yes. But rarely. In an episode his mom literally said āI wish I never gave birth to himā¦ā like wtf. I already hate his mom enough as it is but like cmon even if he is a douche heās a teenage boy thatās YOUR SON.
Ataru missed lum not only because he loved her but because he missed the person that was the only one kind to him.
I think a part of Ataru and lum is the fact Ataru canāt fathom the fact someone is actually genuinely into him past the sexual stuff. I think Ataru never lasted in his relationship with Shinobu is the fact that atarus definitely more lively in relationships where the other doesnāt like him or when he knows heāll be rejected. He likes to whore around (thatās not a good quality btw)
I think Ataru just needed a way bigger support system because in that certain episode he definitely wouldnāt have missed lum if he did (but he also wouldāve cuz itās sort of confirmed he also liked lum but was too proud to admit it)
Ataru is just a guy surrounded by toxic Assholes tbh.
