WHAT IS HAPPENING IN BANGLADESH?

Students of college, universities and even high schools in Bangladesh have taken to the streets in a mass movement named the "Bangla Blockade" demanding the eradication of the quota system.

The quota system reserves a massive percentage of the government jobs for specific groups of people. These jobs are earned by sitting for the Bangladesh Civil Service exams.

Effectively, only 46% of the jobs are left to be contested by merit.

The biggest quota sectors are NOT for the disabled, or indigenous people or for women.

THIRTY PERCENT of the jobs are reserved for children and grandchildred of registered freedom fighters.

The police and political wings are using violence on the protesters. Images of armed men beating up women with sticks and rods are going viral.

Spread the word. We need more people talking about this.

For the last two days, I felt so desperate, frustrated and helpless, what can I do? I hear all of these news, I don't know how much is true...

I say someone say who will draw today's picture? Write today's story?  I felt it then, if today our so called intellectuals don't, then we must write ourselves! If I don't write at this time, then how can I dream of being a writer!? Those of us who write or paint and can't go to protest, let us take our pen and paint. Let it be our protest! I am not a good writer, just another average student. I cannot say I can make something out of your experience or what I will write will be good in quality. BUT I will try and I will give it my all. That's what I can do. So if you want to share your or your friend or anyone's true story, contact me. I have a fleeting idea, I want to make it a reality.

Finally our students reached independence on 36th July (5th august). It was a roller coster of a journey. Sometimes heart almost stoping with fear, then surpassing that fear and stand up for what is right, speaking up. Honestly I was scared, everynight I couldn't sleep. But being scared doesn't mean you have to stop, does it?

From 'বাংলাদেশ ছাড়ব' to 'বাংলাদেশ গড়ব', we grew up. We learned how much we truely loved our country, how much we deeply cared for it.

Let's all rejoice and let's not forget, "স্বাধীনতা অর্জনের চেয়ে রক্ষা করা কঠিন". We WILL protect this freedom!! And we will build a nation we and generations after generations will be proud of!!

Recently in my country Bangladesh, students around all over the country are protesting against a government policy named "Quota"

Basically it's a quota reserved for the children of our freedom fighters who fought in our 1971 liberation war for government jobs in our country.

Now the problem is, even the unqualified children and grandchildren of our freedom fighters are getting this privilege. Logically speaking why should they get a government job over a person who actually deserved it more than them?

This is actually a more serious issue but because of lack of good words I can't explain it properly and that's my failure

But this is not why I grabbed your attention today

According to law, every human has the right to protest for injustice if they are not harming other people in the process.

But seems like some political parties do not agree with it

Mark this date, yesterday, 15 July 2024,

Students were attacked by the students political party called "ছাত্রলীগ" or "student's league" because of their protest in Dhaka university,Eden mohila college, Jahangirnagar University, Dhaka medical college, jagannath university and many more government universities all over the country

Students were brutally beaten by rods,there were bricks thrown towards them.

I live near "Dhaka college" and approximately 2 hours ago I heard minor blast noises and saw people literally throwing bricks at each other. You can look for yourself on news channels since many international media are covering it.

Here's a voicemail of a female student-

Vague translation-

"Today if you people saw the situation in our campus believe me you all would literally hate the student's league or fear it for your whole life.

In front of us, they had beaten the boys with rods to half death. The boys had come to us and begged us saying big sister please let us hide here or they will kill us. We tried to hide them with our Scarf,Burkas,behind the curtains but those people pushed us aside and took our classmates out and beat them with rods on their heads and they were our familiar faces who did this inhumane act. They literally laid them on the roads.

They threw big bricks towards the female student's chests, our clothes were torn but those who are our bachmates whom we attended class all year didn't say anything about it and in social media they are supporting this behavior."

This is clearly, a violation of human rights and morality.

বয়স হচ্ছে বলে আফসোস না করে, শৈশব ফিরছি আবার। এই মাচায় হবে আবার বৃষ্টি বিলাস। গাঢ় মেঘের ভিতরে ডুব দিয়ে বৃষ্টিতে ভিজবো আবার, সাথে গরম গরম চা!!
