Warning: Language and hints of violence
The sun-dappled leaves flutter in the slight breeze as morning melts into a warm afternoon. A branch bobs as a feisty squirrel lands and races away from her playmate, chittering when he lands behind her within seconds. Birds call and a lone woodpecker’s staccato rhythm echoes. Then it all comes to an abrupt stop.
How did they get here? How did this happen?
Only minutes ago, they were on a girls’ getaway, the trip of a lifetime. Giggling at inside jokes, singing along with the radio at the top of their lungs, and reminiscing about their teenage years. Now, her heart was pounding as they rashly crash through the dense foliage of the surrounding woods that they were just admiring from her car’s windows.
‘This is insane’, she thinks as her feet pound into the spongy moss-covered ground. The thick scent of earth fills her nostrils with the fragrance of pine, ferns, and dirt, topped with the spice of decaying underbrush. She huffs from the exertion, the adrenaline in her veins pushing her past her normal activity limit. She barely notices the rivulets of sweat as they roll from her hairline down around her flushed face. ‘Running for your life, or at least your virtue, will do that to a person,’ she muses from the verge of hysteria.
Loud above the women’s ragged breathing, she swears it sounds like their seedy shouts are coming from all around them as they push deeper and deeper into the thicket. Their taunts spew sordid and disgusting, and oh god, they sound so close!
‘These men must know these woods’, the recognition hits her square in the chest like a sledgehammer.
‘Dear God, what are we going to do?’

She can hear their footsteps now. God, they are so close!
The two frantic women push their tired legs harder, trying to gain distance between them and their pursuers. But the brush is so thick it grabs at their hips and thighs, wrapping around their legs, entangling their feet, and threatening to pull them down at any moment.
The surrounding woods have gone silent, the birds and timber critters have stopped chattering to listen to the desperate chase that is taking place. The air is thick with the telltale sounds of limbs cracking, the pounding thump of feet on dirt, the frantic rasps of prey struggling to breathe, and the encouraging howls of a hunt nearing its end.
She can hear them. Dear God, she can hear them in every direction! There is nowhere to flee from the howls and the vocalizations, any direction that they choose will send the frightened women right into one of the stalkers.
Seeing a very large hardwood in front of her, she grabs her fair-haired friend’s hand and pulls her towards the tree. The trunk is wide and stout. It will hopefully provide enough cover while they hide behind it to get their bearings.
There has to be a way to cut through their pursuers’ encircling line, she just needs a moment to think. Fuck, just a moment to listen and come up with a plan. As they huddle behind their shield of bark, the atmosphere is rife with tension at the horrifying sounds of the thicket cracking and splitting all around them. It's too late! The monsters are closing in!
With rising panic and the need for urgency, they are just about to sprint forward when a new crack is heard, this time from overhead.
A storm of leaves rains down from above as a heavy, ground-shaking thump is felt on the earth in front of where they cower in fear.
An ear-splitting guttural roar pierces the woodland like a spear. The force of the blasting sonance produces shockwaves that vibrate her insides and cause her heartbeat to stutter and falter.
When they dare to peek, the friends cannot believe their eyes. This wasn't one of the monsters pursuing them. This creature was unlike anything they had ever seen before…
