Here's a thought. What if Nine hot a sonic but I that sonic is about as old as tails would be when he was supposed to meet sonic in the main verse.

If you want a Sontails fic, I don't really do that, my apologies. I can do fluff with these two in place of that if you're ok with that!

==========================================

Sonic sighed as he watched the fox tirelessly work away. It was getting late, and while Sonic didn't want the metal kitsune to overwork himself, it seemed that Nine was as bad, if not worse than Tails with his sleeping schedule.

"Come on bud, you need to rest."

"I already told you hedgehog, I'm fine. If you want to whine about rest you can go upstairs and use my bed, now leave me alone to work."

Sonic huffed in frustration and annoyance. Yep. Just like Tails. He pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed. He walked up to the kit and turned him around.

"I'm serious Nine. Bed. Now."

Nine's eyes narrowed and he snarled.

"And I said I'm. Not. Tired."

Yeah, ok, he wasn't doing this right now.

"H-hey, what're you-put me down!"

"Sorry little buddy, but you need to go to bed."

Sonic felt the kit kick and struggle out of his arms, but the kicks weren't hard, and his struggles were getting weaker due to the fox's true exhaustion. He heard the child sigh and smirked, knowing he had won. The kit's metal tails were currently drooped over in response to the vulpine's defeat, having been too tired to work in the struggle.

He carefully climbed the ladder with his cargo in tow with one hand, the other having to make sure the fox didn't slip off. Once he got to the top, he made his way to the fox's bed, gently setting the fox down once he got there.

The kit in question merely grumbled and began to wrap himself under the covers, slowly becoming more and more tired. The hedgehog chuckled.

"What was that about 'not being tired'?"

"Mrph.", the response was a muffled grunt, but Sonic knew the fox was telling him to 'shut up' because he was right. Laying down on the floor next to the bed, the hedgehog began to doze off.

"Grck!" Before being rudely awakened by something being thrown at him. Opening his eyes he found that the fox had thrown an extra pillow and blanket to his surprise. He looked at the person in question, who grumbled something about a 'stupid hedgehog' and 'making me sleep' as they laid back down and buried themselves in the covers once more.

The 'stupid hedgehog' merely smiled softly at the gesture, laying his head on the pillow and wrapping the blanket over him. As he slowly began to doze off he murmured out thanks.

"Thanks a lot, bud, see ya in the morning."

Nine didn't reply, too busy hiding a small smile at the caring gestures the hedgehog made. His two tails wagged slightly and gently at the feeling of being loved.

"Hello Mr. Archive Guy! I absolutely love this prompt! We need some humor!"

Thank you! (This is Mr. Archive Guy again.) I loved what you did with "A Mangey Tale." Some of my favorite bits include:

"I was busy thinking how this other me led those dunderheads through surviving with my superior intellect!", Nine's voice had a slight worry."

"There was more and more, and Nine found himself APPALLED by this other him. Mangey was named because of how mangey his fur was, he cowered in the face of a threat, WHIMPERED, he even ATE BARK."

"I was busy thinking how this other me led those dunderheads through surviving with my superior intellect!", Nine's voice had a slight worry.

You have a good way with words!

========================

I hope that you don't mind that I'm "on a roll" with these prompts. I really enjoy sharing these with you, and seeing what you do with my ideas, Bluebunnyears!

This next prompt comes from me wondering where an antisocial loner guy like Nine gets all his money from. Not just to live, but to have the resources to construct all his gizmos, including a SPACESHIP.

I call it: "Spaceships Aren't Free."

I hope you enjoy it!

===========================

We start with Sonic, escaping from danger through a portal and winding up back in New Yoke City, once again.  He is exhausted from everything he’s been through on the opposite side of the portal… and also hungry and thirsty.

But soon enough, Eggforcers find and attack him.  Sonic fights them as best he can, but he’s exhausted, so he’s not fighting his best.  Suddenly, Nine swoops on the scene, helping Sonic dispatch the robots with a fancy new electro-gun.

Sonic and Nine exchange a few friendly words; Nine explaining that he recently escaped from the Chaos Council and is now hiding from them.  He asks Sonic to “follow me this way.”

A few minutes after beginning to follow Nine, Sonic’s stomach growls loudly enough that Nine stops in concern.  “Have you not eaten?”

Even though Sonic says, “It’s no big deal,” Nine insists on making a pit stop at a nearby convenience store.

“Go ahead and pick out some food for yourself real quick.”  Nine tells Sonic.

Of course, Sonic IS real quick.  There are no chili dogs here, but he zips up and down the aisles, collecting snacks, candy, and a can of soda.

“That’ll be 47 eggbucks.”  The shocked cashier tells Sonic.

Sonic’s chagrined to realized he doesn’t have any money on him (certainly not New Yoke money), but Nine calmly pulls out his wallet and pays for Sonic’s food, buying only a bag of mint candies for himself.

After leaving the convenience store, Sonic follows Nine to his new hideout, (a different one than the place Nine and Sonic first met in.). Nine mentions that having multiple hideouts makes him harder for other people to track.

Inside, Hideout #2 is filled with all sorts of cool state-of-the-art tech… including a NEW SHATTERSHIP which Nine is in the middle of building.

As Nine tells Sonic to make himself at home, a thought hits Sonic.  He looks back and forth between the bag of empty food wrappers Nine bought for him, and all the pricey hardware throughout his hideout.

He asks Nine: “How are you paying for all this?!”

At first, Nine is evasive.  But Sonic points around at all the tech, and Nine’s new electro-gun, and especially the second Shattership.  Even if he “built it all himself,” where did Nine get the money for the materials to build even ONE Shattership... much less TWO?

After a moment of silence, Nine tells Sonic he’s actually a MULTIMILLIONAIRE, and all of it’s dirty money.

Initially assuming the worst, Sonic asks Nine if he’s ever committed murder or done work for the Chaos Council.

“No and no,” Nine says.  “But there are plenty of other rich lowlifes in New Yoke City who’ve used me as a hacker.”

Nine admits that he’s hacked all sorts of stuff: corporate databases, security systems, robots, and bank accounts.

Disappointed to learn all this about his friend, Sonic quietly tells Nine that he wishes he could’ve been there for him much earlier in his life.

“Me too!” Nine retorts in an angry sneer.  “But back when I was having my muzzle shoved in the mud, and my skull stomped into the pavement… back when my poor tails were nearly ripped right out of my body like a pair of weeds… you were too busy chilling with *your* ‘Tails’ to help me when I needed you most, huh, ‘bestie?!’”

These words come as an emotional sucker punch to Sonic.  While he DOESN’T cry, he’s so visibly hurt and heartbroken by these words that Nine is ashamed of himself, and starts blurting out apologies: (“I’m so sorry, that was INCREDIBLY unfair to you, you were in another DIMENSION back then!” and such.)

Finally, Sonic mutters out, “It’s okay,” and sits in a chair.

Then Sonic basically says: “You know, what I don’t get is… where is MY variant?  Where is “New Yoke Me?”  What kind of a heartless excuse of a hedgehog would just sit back and ALLOW all this awfulness to happen… not just to you, Nine, but to this ENTIRE WORLD?!”

Nine also sits in a chair right next to Sonic, and puts on a kindly, consoling smile.

He tells Sonic that – for a while, whenever he had free time – he did research on New Yoke’s hedgehog population, including hacking into New Yoke City’s census database, all in hopes of finding Sonic’s New Yoke ‘variant.’  Just because he also wanted to see what “New Yoke Sonic” was like.  (It helped that hedgehogs are a minority demographic in New Yoke.) But though Nine’s research was thorough, he never found ANY hedgehog that could adequately “match” Sonic as a variant, (“not even on the most superficial level, like that ‘Mangey’ kid you told me about, a while back!”)

Meaning no variant of Sonic had ever been born in this world in the first place.

Upon hearing that “New Yoke Sonic” was never born in the first place, Sonic says, “Good.  Now I don’t have to find him and punch him in the nose for being such an uncaring jerk.”

Nine laughs a little.

But then the fox continues, very soberly: “When all’s said and done, it just wouldn’t be fair for either of us to place 100% of the blame for how I turned out on your absence, Sonic… or any hypothetical variant of yours.  At some point, I HAVE to take ownership for my own life decisions.”

“But those bullies…!”

Nine reasons: “Bullies or no bullies… if I were really a proper ‘good guy’ at heart, I’d’ve probably gotten a ‘respectable’ job, at the very least.  Like an electrician or a computer repairfox or something.  Instead, I became an expert hacker, didn’t I?”

Sonic stands up.  He tells Nine that there’s more goodness in him than he gives himself credit for.  That he doesn’t think any less of Nine at all because of his past.  In fact, he feels MORE motivated to be an even BETTER friend to Nine, to make up for all the times he wasn’t there.

Smiling, Nine says, “I’m holding you too that, Sonic.  You’re doing a great job so far!”

Then they high-five.

Then Sonic starts to get interested in the new shattership Nine is building, and the story ends while Nine is showing off the cooler features he’s installing.

What do you think of this idea? Would you enjoy fleshing it out?

Of course, I don't mind! I love seeing the ideas you come up with! Feel free to send me as many prompts as you wish!

This is another fantastic prompt I can't wait to flesh out!

================================================

Sonic felt as if he was going to collapse. He had been running for so long, his legs now felt sore, and his lungs felt as if they might burst. He was currently bruised and tired from the beatdowns he's been through. He felt his stomach growl, making him scowl; don't forget hungry and thirsty as well.

He was back in New Yolk. The city was as rundown and lifeless as ever, maybe even moreso. As Sonic wandered around, he found he couldn't find any of the rebels, nor Nine. He felt a pang of worry in his chest, and he continued to search, running now and ignoring his screaming limbs.

He glanced around as he ran, but found no traces of them, he called out their names but got no reply.

Where-

"Oof!"

Sonic groaned as he slammed into something hard and metal thanks to his reflection of mind where he was going. Looking up he moaned in complaint at the sight of the Eggforcers. He stood up, speaking grumpily.

"Ugh...Come on! Can't I get a break from all this?"

The answer was no because he was smashed into a wall by a giant robotic fist. After shaking off the dizziness by hitting his head again, he began to fight back. Well, he tried to, ignoring his aching body and exhaustion. He was slowing down, being beaten into the wall once more.

He was now helpless, his limbs being too tired and strained to move, his breaths shaky and dry. He watched as the bots got closer and closer...

Before they were suddenly hit by a laser beam. The robots landed with a thud as a familiar nine-tailed fox came into view.

"Nine!"

"The one and only! Now, are you just going to stand there like a sitting duck, or do I gotta do all the dirty work?", the fox's voice wasn't sneering or snarky, it was a genuine question about the hedgehog's current abilities at the time.

The hedgehog, not wanting the fox to be burdened with all of the metal dolts, shakily stood and spin-dashed a few, barely missing a couple times. Before long, all of the Eggforcers has been dispatched, leaving the two alone for a while before more came.

Sonic turned to the kit, asking where he's been, asking what happened.

"Well, after you left, I was captured by the Council dolts, it was torture having to listen to stupid plans that were bound to fail, not to mention a headache listening to them argue every five seconds.", Nine rubbed at his temples, before glancing up at Sonic with a smirk, "Luckily for me, they weren't smart enough to make sure I wouldn't escape. I used my brain, unlike them, and managed to make it out here, and I've been hiding out ever since."

Sonic's ears drooped at the mention of being captured, even if Nine didn't mention what happened, didn't mention how they'd shocked him multiple times, silencing him, something he wasn't a stranger to. The fox left those out, not wanting to worry the already frazzled hedgehog. As much as it annoyed him, he preferred the shimmering excitement and uncontrollable energy that radiated off the optimistic urchin much more to the pain or sadness that would take over when he got hurt.

It'd squeeze his heart every time, it made him feel like a pit was forming in his stomach.

This was no different, so he spoke before the hedgehog could utter pointless and unneeded apologies.

"Don't go on to blab about how sorry you are for something you didn't do. Now, we should get out of here before more Eggforcers show up, lucky for you, I know just the place we can hide out in the meantime, follow me."

He turned, using his metal tails to lead the way to the place he spoke of, not wanting to look at the guilt in the emerald eyes of his friend. He heard the hedgehog follow behind, more dragging his feet than walking. The fox noted this, knowing the hedgehog needed rest as soon as they got there.

They were passing a convenience store when he heard a low growl. He turned to the blue blur, noticing his embarrassed and guilty expression and darting eyes.

Ah.

"When was the last time you ate?"

The urchin merely shrugged, stating it was no big deal, but Nine wasn't hearing it. He looked around, spotting the convenience store across the street, telling the hero to follow as they entered the genuinely convenient place.

"Go and pick out some food for yourself real quick.", and at that statement, the hedgehog paused and hesitated, before speeding up and down the aisles, collecting chips, two cans of soda, and a bag of mint candy. Funny, Nine didn't know the hedgehog was fond of mints as well.

The cashier on the other side of the counter stared shocked at the impossible speed, before regaining some composure and stating the price. The blue blur paused as he realized he had no means to pay. Lucky for him, Nine had plenty to spare, paid the cashier and they both left the store, being careful to avoid being spotted by passing bots.

Avoiding any cameras, and being careful to avoid more drones, they finally made it to the fox's second base. It wasn't in a subway like the one Sonic knew and thought they were going to, it was in a secluded area, an area where nobody was present. It was as if any other presence besides the two of them disappeared, making the hedgehog shudder silently at the thought.

The fox noticed his confusion and mentioned having several hideouts to make it harder for others to track him. He entered the code, and the two walked in, the door shutting behind them. Sonic marveled at the space, all sorts of inventions and machines surrounding them, he found another ship, almost exactly identical to the Shatter Drive. It was missing parts here and there, but it looked almost complete.

"Go ahead and make yourself at home.", the fox's voice snapped him out of his trance. He had a thought hit him, looking around the base once more, the food Nine bought him that has yet to be eaten, and the fox himself.

"Hey, Nine?"

"What?", the fox looked over at him in response, an eyebrow raised.

"How...how are you getting all of this stuff?"

"What do you mean?"

"I mean, the hideouts, and the tech stuff, and all that. How can you afford to make all of these?"

"I don't see why that's important. You seem tired, you can take a seat you know-"

"Nine.", Sonic interrupted, pointing around all the expensive tech, giving the fox a questioning look. The fox paused, and it was silent for a while before he answered.

"Well, in simple terms, I'm rich."

Sonic paused, that...wasn't what he was expecting.

"What?"

"I'm rich. And before you ask, no I don't work in shops or anything like that. All of the money is money hard earned from my business."

"Business?"

"Yup, and it's a rather shady one if I may add.", Nine explained, which made the hedgehog once again pause at the response, before widening his eyes and hesitantly asking a question.

"Is-is it anything for the council? Is the 'shady' part blackmail or-"

"Seriously Sonic? I mentioned ESCAPING the council, why would I be working for a bunch of egg-shaped knuckleheads, one of them being a literal INFANT if I may add?"

His snarky response made the hedgehog sigh in relief, after that he paused and looked more curious than frightened. Nine preferred that, he didn't want the hedgehog to fear him, they are friends after all.

"Then what do you do?"

"I have a hacking business. People, more rich lowlifes than anything, pay me to hack into whatever pointless site or pathetic drama I could care less about.", his fingers ticked off the things he hacked into, "Corporate databases, security systems, robots, bank accounts, and more things I didn't care about to remember."

He stopped when he noticed the hedgehog went silent. He looked over to see the urchin saddened, ears drooped once more. Nine felt the tightening on his chest once more.

"I should've been there for you...then you wouldn't have gone through all that. You wouldn't have been alone."

Nine shrugged, trying to ignore the tightening.

"Yeah, well you weren't", his voice was unintentionally hard and snarky, but began to build up, "But it couldn't be helped. You didn't know I existed, all you knew was chilling with your friends. Chilling with your real best friend. Hanging out with Tails while I was alone in this crapsack of a city!", his voice reached a snarl at the name of his other counterpart.

There was no response, and when Nine turned around, he wanted to tase himself. Sonic's ears were drooped, pain and heartbreak were present in the normally vibrant emerald orbs, and he looked at the ground, not in shame, but in self-blame.

Nine felt like scratching and mauling himself.

"Sonic...I didn't - it's not your fault...I mean, you didn't even know I was captured or I existed or-or anything until now. I didn't mean what I said, I - my emotions...I didn't-"

"Nine,", Sonic gently interrupted the kit with a reassuring smile, "It's ok. I know you didn't. It's just...", the hedgehog slowly sat down on a nearby chair, as he voiced his thoughts, his tone firm and angry, not at Nine, "Where is THIS dimension's Sonic? Where's 'New Yolk' me? What heartless excuse of a hedgehog would allow all of THIS to happen, to you, to everyone, to this world?"

Nine stayed silent, before moving over to the distressed hedgehog, sitting beside him and giving a small reassuring smile. He placed a careful hand on the hedgehog's shoulder, getting his attention.

"You know, in my free time, I've done a check on New Yolk's city records. I tried to find a file of another you, tried to see what happened to him or what he was like, and it helped that the hedgehog population isn't that high, but I found that there isn't a single record of a hedgehog that even remotely resembles you, not even on the superficial level, like that 'Mangey' you told me about. There are no citizen codes, no birth dates or other records, or reports of a hedgehog disrupting the status quo, nor can I find any footage of a hedgehog that can run faster than the speed of light."

Sonic's eyes widened at the news. So a 'New Yolk' version of him didn't exist. After registering that, the blue urchin huffed.

"Good. Nice to know I won't have to find him and punch him for being an uncaring jerk."

Nine snorted, rolling his eyes in amusement before his eyes softened and his gaze averted to the ground, his fingers picking at the tips of his gloves in sudden nervousness and unexpected humbleness.

"Still, at the end of all of this, it wouldn't be fair for either of us to take one hundred percent of the blame, especially with how I turned out in your absence and any hypothetical variant of yours. I need to take ownership of my own life decisions, for how I chose to change."

"But it wasn't your fault! I should've been there to stop those blockhead bullies-"

"Bullies or no bullies, if I really was a good person I wouldn't be at odds with several people, including those rebels, if I really was a good person I could've found a better job for myself like an electrician or a repair fox," he turned slightly away from the hedgehog, staring at the walls or the inventions he made, he didn't want to see the guilt or hurt or whatever in his companion's eyes, "but instead I chose to be a hacker for rich people wanting to find dirt on their neighbors. If I really was a good person, I wouldn't be where I am now would I?"

It was silent for a second before Nine heard the hero stand and move over to kneel in front of him, he moved his eyes to the ground before he felt warm hands take his cold, slightly shaking ones, startling the young fox. One of the hands moved up to turn his gaze to the hedgehog, who was giving him a warm and gentle smile, the emerald eyes shining with warmth and reassurance.

"Bud, I think there's more goodness, more kindness in you than you give yourself credit for. I mean, you're helping me aren't you? What happened in the past, what you did in the past doesn't make me think any less of you. In fact, I want to be there more for you, I want to make sure you're happy and safe, I don't want you to hurt anymore, especially if some of it was because of me.", his ears drooped slightly, before perking back up as the hedgehog made a determined expression, "I'm not going to leave you behind like that ever again, no matter what."

Nine's eyes widened at how determined and serious the normally bubbly and excited hedgehog was. He really meant it, Nine deduced, and he felt his chest fill up with bubbly warmth as he realized. It wasn't the first time he felt this feeling, it happened multiple times when the hedgehog gave him so much care and kindness, things that were foreign to him.

Before he could stop it, a wide smile spread across his face.

"I'm holding you to that, hedgehog! You've been doing pretty ok so far, not enough to make up for having me pay for the snacks, which you still need to eat by the way, but it's getting there."

The fox's voice was light and teasing, carefree. Sonic snorted, fake offense evident in his goofy expression, he placed a hand on his heart and pretended to swoon.

"You wound me, Nine! How could I have a friend so cruel!", Sonic smiled wider as the normally stoic fox giggled, "Besides", the urchin smiled grabbing the bag of mints and a can of soda and bringing them over to the child, "you should be glad, otherwise, I wouldn't have gotten these for you!"

Nine paused, surprise taking over his expression at the kind and unexpected gesture. He regained himself, and took the bag of candy and sweet drink, popping a mint into his mouth he added:

"Alright, you're getting just a little bit more progress...I mean I did pay for this after all.", Nine smirked as the hedgehog playfully glared, his hands on his hips, trying not to chuckle, but ultimately failing in the end, both of them breaking into heartfelt laughter.

Nine never felt this light and warm.

Sonic then stopped as he noticed the other, currently being built Shatter Drive once more. Nine noticed this and offered to show Sonic the new improvements of the Shatter Drive 2.0, which the hedgehog eagerly accepted, with admiration and adoration present in shimmering emerald irises.

As Nine happily showed off his new invention, he felt at ease, he felt happy, and he savored those feelings because even though the hedgehog promised, the universe might take the urchin away from him again.

But he'll search the entire cosmos if it meant they could be like this again; happy, carefree...

Together.
