A completely different take on the end of Young Royals S2 after S3. Everyone raved about the ending scene of Season 2. The sequence where Wille decides to not let August step into the spotlight and speak was lauded as a triumphant moment: It was Wille coming into his own and taking charge of his own narrative, not allowing Simon to be pushed aside and silenced, and taking away what August most wanted. I think everyone cheered!

A Completely Different Take On The End Of Young Royals S2 After S3. Everyone Raved About The Ending Scene

And we were all wrong apparently. Because the narrative of Season 3 shows that Wille made the *wrong* decision here. He should have stayed seated and let August give the speech.

A Completely Different Take On The End Of Young Royals S2 After S3. Everyone Raved About The Ending Scene

--If August gives the speech, he is hard launched into the public eye as a working royal if not yet the spare and future crown prince. Pulled completely into the royal machine, August's "punishment" would start all the sooner. The "poetic justice" would be even more poetic because August was so smug and self-satisfied in that moment.

--Kristina wouldn't have her mental breakdown. YR portrayed Kristina's breakdown as being tied to Wille defying her and publicly coming out. If that doesn't happen, there is no catalyst for her breakdown. While she will be disappointed, she's always been disappointed in Wille. If August is her ideal heir like Wille says in S3, this gives her more time to adjust to August (control him).

--Wille is automatically under less pressure if Kristina doesn't have her breakdown. August being a working royal would further take public pressure off Wille. Wille could even use the fact that he could have come out, but didn't, and the Royal Court's ability to use August as the spare as a negotiation piece to get his mother to leave him in peace for 2 years.

--Simon would face zero harassment, bullying, or threats because, per Lisa, no one cares about Simon if they don't know he's dating royalty. He can keep all his social media accounts public and post whatever cringy songs or poorly staged pictures he wants. He can ride the bus without crying, won't have to consider leaving town, and would have no reason to not want to exist. He would not have to live with the regret/guilt/pressure of being suddenly thrust into the public (again) and unable to express that to Wille. Simon will instead be able to learn, at his own pace, the difference between being a secret and being private.

--Because there are no increased threats, Malin and the other guards would remain posted to the gatehouse and not following Wille around. This gives more opportunity for Wilmon privacy, real lake dates, etc. The entire school already knows they hooked up, and despite the overt curiosity, no one other than August is ever shown to have loose lips, so they can be open at school. But given that Simon doesn't like being stared at in S3, he may not want to be that open after all. See again the difference between being private and being a secret.

--Then when Wille turns 18, or better yet, at the end of their 3rd year, maybe at graduation, Wille makes the same speech depicted in S2, only this time Simon knows he's going to do it and is prepared. They have been a couple for 2-3 years, have worked through their issues together, and Wille has probably actually spoken to Linda and Sara and they have all had real conversations. Implications and next steps have been communicated and weighed.

--If Wille also announces his renunciation, it would have true weight and impact because he would be legally an adult. His speech could still inspire someone (like Nils) to expose Hillerska's past and the school ultimately gets shut down.

The Queen spent S2 pitting Wille and August against each other, using one to manipulate the other to get what she wanted: an obedient Wille. I thought that by defying her overtly and making that speech, it was a mark of Wille growing into his own. I was wrong because S3 showed very quickly there was no growth, development, or betterment of anything - quite the opposite. Wille should instead have called the Queen's bluff, let August step up, and thereby beat Kristina at her own game.

So S2's ending did not mean what it seemed to mean in the end.
