Endlich den Dom einmal ganz auf das Foto bekommen – von wo würde das leichter klappen als aus der Vogelperspektive? Der Blick auf Köln ist von hoch oben atemberaubend. Besucher der Stadt können so leicht einen allerersten Eindruck von der Stadt erhaschen.
Seit 60 Jahren gibt es jedoch auch die Möglichkeit, gemütlich über den Rhein zu schweben. Tickets gibt’s beim Einstieg im Gebäude auf der Riehler Straße gegenüber von Zoo und Flora. Verglichen mit Seilbahnfahrten in Skigebieten geht’s ziemlich langsam voran mit den einzelnen Gondeln, von denen jede anders aussieht, schön bunt gestaltet. Ein paar Minuten warten und dann geht’s los.
Während der Fahrt überqueren die Gondeln nicht nur den Fluss, sondern auch die vielbefahrene Zoobrücke, was für Auto- und Gondelfahrer ein spannender Moment ist. Die Fahrt, beginnend auf der rechtsrheinischen Seite, lässt sich sehr gut mit einem Besuch im Zoo verbinden – Kombitickets für den Besuch und die Rückfahrt am besten gleich mit kaufen.
Ja, es ist ein Erlebnis, plötzlich das dicht befahrene Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer und den Verkehr auf der Zoobrücke von hier oben zu betrachten und das einmalige Kölnpanorama von der Kölnarena, den Triangel Turm über die Brücken die Stapelhausfront und die zwei Spitzen der berühmten Kathedrale aus dieser Perspektive zu erleben. Über dem Rheinpark in Köln-Deutz schweben wir langsam wieder runter.
Die Kölner Seilbahn ist nicht nur die erste über einen Fluss führende Seilschwebebahn in Europa, sondern gilt nach gut 6 Jahrzehnten Bestehens mittlerweile als architektonisches Urgestein Kölns.
Einst wurde die Seilschwebebahn als zusätzliches Transportmittel zur Bundesgartenschau im Jahre 1957 eröffnet. Tatsächlich zählte die Bahn zu dieser Großveranstaltung rund 1,35 Millionen Fahrgäste, die den Rhein auf die damals noch außergewöhnliche Art und Weise überqueren wollten.
Zwei 33 bis 35 Tonnen schwere Pendelstützen verbanden die 685 m langen und 26,5 m hohen Seile. Die ursprüngliche Betriebsdauer sollte eigentlich nur 5 Jahre betragen, doch aufgrund des großen Erfolges wurde die Überlebensdauer der Seilbahn immer wieder verlängert. Bis der geplante Brückenbau anstand und eine Lösung gefunden werden mussten, denn die Pfeiler der Seilbahn waren dem Bau im Weg.
Es gab keine andere Möglichkeit, als die Pendelstützen zu demontieren und diese in den 60er Jahren um einige Meter versetzt wieder zu errichten. Dadurch erreichte die Länge der Strecke 935 m.
Fortan konnten pro Stunde 1.600 Personen transportiert werden. Seit der BUGA zählte die Kölner Seilbahn knapp 20 Millionen Fahrgäste und wurde sogar mit dem Mercurius-Preis des Kölner Verkehrsvereins ausgezeichnet.
Mit etwas Glück erwischt man die bei Kindern sehr beliebten Gondeln mit Aufdruck der „Sendung mit der Maus“ und kann darin Platz nehmen. Mittlerweile gibt es sogar vom BAP-Sänger Wolfgang Niedecken gestaltete Gondeln und die die Verbundenheit der Kölner mit ihrer Heimatstadt wiederspiegeln.
Viele Kölner nutzen ihre Seilbahn, um das gegenüberliegende Rheinufer zu erreichen, aber auch immer mehr Touristen freuen sich auf eine Fahrt mit der Kölner Seilbahn. Linksrheinisch befindet sich der Kölner Zoo mit einer Vielzahl an Tierarten.
Besonders für Stadtkinder stellt der Kölner Zoo ein wunderbares Ausflugsziel dar. Zusätzlich gibt es im Tierpark große Spielplätze, auf dem sich die kleinen Gäste ausgiebig austoben können, während ihre Eltern das bunte Treiben von den Bänken aus beobachten.
Angeblich gibt es sogar die Möglichkeit, sich in einer Hochzeitsgondel unter sechs Augen von einem Standesbeamten trauen zu lassen und sich über dem Rhein hängend die gegenseitige Liebe und Treue zu schwören. Vermutlich die romantische Alternative zum Rathaus. Aber auch Nicht-Liebespaare können eine unvergessliche Fahrt über den Rhein in Köln erleben.
Selten hat man die Möglichkeit, die Rheinmetropole aus dieser atemberaubenden Vogelperspektive in Ruhe zu genießen und die Eindrücke auf sich wirken zu lassen: Schiffe auf dem Rhein, Großfamilien sitzen beim gemeinsamen Picknick im Rheinpark und Sportgruppen treffen sich am Ufer.
Der Rheinpark liegt zwischen den Kölner Stadtteilen Deutz und Mülheim und steht seit dem Jahre 1989 unter Denkmalschutz. Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts wurde die Anlage zum Landschaftspark umgewandelt und war später in den 50er Jahren Austragungsstätte der Bundesgartenschau.
Heute dürfen Sie sich über ein Wasserspiel, blühende Beete, einen Laubengarten und einen Brunnen am Adenauerweiher freuen. Besonders im Frühling sowie im Sommer erstrahlt der Park in bunter Blütenpracht. Verschiedene Skulpturen setzen hier Highlights.
Kurz vor der Ankunft am rechtsrheinischen Ufer schweben die Gondeln noch über die Claudius-Therme, die auf den Quellen von mineralhaltigem Wasser gegründet wurde.
Die Therme gehört zu den schönsten Thermalbädern in Europa. Betrachtet man die Architektur der Therme, erkennt man sofort deren Anlehnung an die Badekultur in der Römerzeit. Harmonisch in die schöne Parklandschaft eingebettet, lässt es sich hier super relaxen.
Während der winterlichen Betriebspause der Kölner Seilbahn wird die gesamte Anlage gewartet. Das geschieht jedes Jahr ab dem November. Auch die Gondeln und die Talstationen werden jedes Jahr in der Winterpause gründlich gereinigt. Die Gondel-Motive werden dann ebenfalls gewechselt.

The cable car in Cologne is not only the first cable car in Europe leading across a river, but after more than 6 decades of existence is now regarded as the archetypal architectural gem of Cologne.
The cable car was once opened as an additional means of transport to the Federal Garden Show in 1957. In fact, the ropeway to this major event counted around 1.35 million passengers who wanted to cross the Rhine in the then extraordinary way.
