( book ii ; melancholy ) " it  pains  you  to  witness  slash  after  slash  on  your  significant  other' s  body.  you  try  your  best  to  scream  at  the  perpetrator  to  stop  but  it  just  keeps  going.  tears  stream  down  your  swollen,  bloodshot  eyes.  you  can' t  do  anything,  the  perpetrator  won' t  end  anytime  soon.  your  voice  cracks  from  the  strain  of  screaming,  which  is  drowned  out  by  the  brutality  that  unfolds  in  front  of  you. "

as i listened , i felt the memories come off the page and start tormenting me anew. her screams began ringing in my ears just like they had before. and as the vision of her bloodied figure took up my minds eye i screamed with her ; as though it was happening all over again. my brain hadn't remembered the scene , but my throat had easily remembered the pain of screaming like this. my eyes remembered the wet sting of tears , now tracing the memory down my cheeks.

in the next blink she was gone , and a newly familiar melancholy filled in her silhouette. i tried to memorize what I could about her—despite the vivid reminder of her pain it hadn't resurfaced any other memories of her. only the feelings. but as i started building her in my mind i began dreading the prospect of more memories. had i forgotten for a reason?
