hi so actually you can like a character but that character being likable doesn’t automatically mean that the narrative has to reward them for you connecting with them by being the absolute bestest at karate or that the extent by which they can be positively represented comes from success in karate. we also have to be realistic about (a) actual skill level and results seen in the show and (b) karate(or any sport tbh) not even just being about who’s the objective best but about who actually shows up on the day of and who doesn’t manage to do that
