Breaking the radio silence with a post with wyverns! It's #smaugust so what better time is it to revisit my fantasy world's take on wyverns, dragons, serpents/worms and drakes!? Just plotted down a note on the wyvern phylogony, making a distinction on what animal lineages converged, and what separates them. As of now there's an archosaurian (dinosaurs, crocodiles, pterosaurs) lineage, and a squamatan (lizards) lineage. . . I'm still working on the sculpture of the terror bird, but I'm also taking some well earned time off after working A LOT, and i'm also using this time to reflect and heal after being close to burning out, and transitioning between life stages. Here's an oldie ca 2015 I believe! My take on a werewolf on a small page. I make werewolves have shorter upper arms and thighs, longer and more narrow hips/pelvis, deeper chests, and longer wrists/ankles. Not changing too much on their bodies other than an increase of hair, putting them in the gray zone between being VERY hairy, and having a thin coat of fur, and adaptations towards canine locomotion. The head on the other hand, I find that I prefer having it fully transformed from shoulders up, to that of a wolfs. Also, thumbs and big toes shrink and move further up, but retain opposability! Their hands can't pick a lock, but they can definitively open a door or grab a pitchfork! The big toes actually make them a more nimble climber and allows them to sort of grab hold of say a branch or the corner of a building. Here's the cockatrice profile! (I think i might paint this one) . The cockatrice is a small wyvern, about the size of a turkey. It's a highly aggressive species, particularly against mammals for some reason. It's not know why, one theory is that mammals around its size are fought or chased off as they represent competition for its food sources, or that the cockatrice makes their territories as safe they can for their offspring. It's not certain wether this behaviour is gender based, or based on the presence of young or anything at all really. Its aggressive nature is also highlighted in its throat pouch; which is adapted to build up a potent blast of noxious and paralyse inducing gass, instead of the normal gass spray/leak of the archosaurian wyverns and the wyrms. The throat pouch is used for either display purposes, or for food/water storage, like the pelican, in many archosaurian wyverns. It is said the mere gaze of a cockatrice is enough to paralyse or even kill one, but its more likely that if you're close enough to look one in the eye, it's probably realised its foul gass in a steady manner instead of its usual blast or spew. . I've started designing several wyverns of late, and have sorted them in archosaurian (dinosaurs, crocodiles, pterosaurs) and squamatan (lizards and snakes) lineages, that I'll go deeper in on at a later time. I enjoy this a lot, and I need it for a long running world building project I've first gone to work at more the past year. Unicorns! I'm on my way to Berlin for a short week so i nabbed some pictures of my page of unicorns. This feels very relevant atm because I've been looking up horse evolution and trying to find a good point for unicorns to branch off from horses, and through my reseearch I've seen some nice mounts/life reconstructions that seems to be in the NHM of Berlin, so I'm actually a little stoked over that specifically! Anyway, here are two of the first possible members of the unicorn family representing their respective theories on when the split happened. First theory is that of protoceratherium, a small animal that shot off from the likes of eohippus. The second theory is that they split off from the likes of mycohippus, a part of the genus equus, with unoceratherium. Their longer legs allowed them to partake in the grassland ecosystems aswell as their prefered forest bioms, with a better survival chance than their predecessors, and their basal three hoofed legs gave them advantages of stealth and grip on the slippery forest floor. Might do more indepth post on both of these critters later on.
