Personally I think EVERYONE should do genetic testing before having a child. Because EVERYONE can have some funky genetics hiding that could show up in their kid.
Are you prepared to care for a child who has chronic pain? Are you willing care for a child with autism? Are you willing to care for a child with down syndrome? If not, then you shouldn't have kids at all, honestly, because it's a gamble.
Get the testing done and make an educated decision instead of just going at it. At least then, you can be semi-prepared.
Plus the fact that the risk of defects happening due to incest isn't that bad. Cousins having a kid only raises the likelihood from 3% to 4-6% (an estimate, as there isn't significant studies), which is hardly anything.
Even direct siblings only raises it to around 7%. And having a child when you're over 35 raises it to the same amount. So if we want to use this as a reason to ban sibling couples, then we'd have to be consistent and ban people older than 35 from having kids.
when people's only argument against family members safely and consensually dating is "their kids will be born with genetic defects!!!1!!" I'm consistently just flabbergasted by the tone deaf eugenicist ass ableism. like. okay so. my mother, who is disabled by a hereditary auto immune disease that causes chronic pain , should not have had me because I would be born with genetic defects? my mom should not be loved or be in a relationship because any child she has would be born with genetic defects? what is this logic. until someone can give me a real answer as to why consensual incestuous relationships are ACTUALLY BAD I'm completely in support of them. sorry. love is love
