I KNOW, RIGHT? Maybe you’ll be the one to make it a thing. My petition to add this to the pantheon of fandom tropes is here, if you’re interested in elaborating the theoretical model. :P 

Personally, I think it would be interesting with characters who are canonically childhood friends, b/c part of the point was apparently to foster closeness between the royal and the whipping boy, so the royal would empathize with him and seeing him punished would be an effective consequence. Wikipedia says this involved throwing them together a lot in lessons and such, despite their unequal station (so basically, all sorts of enemies to friends or forced marriage-type tropey potential there).

I have no way of knowing if the Wikipedia / Prince and the Pauper portrayals of whipping boys are historically accurate, but neither is A/B/O, so…

for the meme: whipping boy AU. pros: enforced closeness, resentment, empathy, guilt, angsty enjoyment of aftercare, you name it. (~handwave as young adults) (seriously why is this not a fandom trope by now)

Now I’m trying to figure out which characters I want to apply that to and how to play it out. @______@
