OR THE FACT THAT WHEN ABLE-BODIED PEOPLE HAVE TO STAY HOME, IT’S “OMG SOOO HARD” BUT WHEN DISABLED PEOPLE HAVE TO IT’S “OMG UR SOOO LUCKY I WISH I WAS IN BED TOO LOL”
OR THE FACT THAT SOME INSURANCE COMPANIES WAIVED MEDICAL BILLS FOR COVID-19 CARE, BUT NOT MEDICAL BILLS FOR ROUTINE CARE FOR CHRONICALLY ILL PEOPLE
OR THE FACT THAT LUPUS & RA PATIENTS WHO RELY ON HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE FOR EVERYDAY LIFE & SURVIVAL WERE SUDDENLY NOT ABLE TO GET THEIR PRESCRIPTIONS FILLED BECAUSE “OTHER PEOPLE NEED THESE PILLS MORE” (FOR OFF-LABEL USE W/ UNPROVEN—& THEN DISPROVEN—EFFICACY)
OR THE FACT THAT DISABLED PEOPLE IN THE UK—INCLUDING MINORS—RECEIVED LETTERS URGING THEM TO SIGN DNR (DO NOT RESUSCITATE) FORMS SO THAT THEY WOULDN’T USE UP RESOURCES IF THEY HAD A HEALTH EMERGENCY
OR THE FACT THAT COVID-19 PATIENTS IN THE US CAN BE DENIED CARE BASED ON PERCEIVED QUALITY OF LIFE & FUTURE NEED OF RESOURCES (GOING BEYOND SURVIVABILITY-INFORMED TRIAGE & ENTERING THE REALM OF CAPITALISM-INFORMED EUGENICS)
OR, OR, OR. THE LIST GOES ON, & IS ONLY GETTING LONGER.
The past several months have been riddled w/ an amplification of the messages that disabled people are already used to; claims that we are less useful, less valuable, & less human than able-bodied people.
&, that our struggles only matter when they are suddenly shared by the majority…& even then, they still don’t matter as much.

I have a sore throat, probably because I drank a lot of beverages hotter than I should have the last few days, but I don’t have any home testing kits, so I’m going to extra keep my distance from my immunocompromised people, and regular keep my distance from everyone else.
It’s not an ideal situation, but I don’t intend to knowing make anyone sick. Especially people I claim to actually care about.
UGH.
you know what boils my blood.
over the last 2 weeks, i've seen countless patients walk into my urgent care center, symptomatic for so many things, refusing to get tested for covid and flu, citing that they don't want to knowingly bring it to their holiday tables. i had a patient tell me, verbatim, "i don't want to test for covid, because i don't want to be the asshole who brings it on a plane."
i understand that - i understand that holidays are times where people look forward to meeting loved ones that they might only see once a year, or where they get a break from the hectic back and forth of their lives.
but here's the thing - whether they get tested or not, they will bring whatever they have to their holiday tables. it's pure recklessness to know that you're sick, and walk into someone else's house spreading the disease.
today, january 2, i saw 91 patients, many of them who have tested positive for covid and flu. many of these patients are the same ones who didn't want testing 3 days ago, until their events were over, and now, they will have to reach out to everyone they know to let them know that they were positive because they were showing symptoms well before their event.
the next week or two? we're going to see many, many more, all people with symptoms that started around christmas. these are the only two viruses we test for rapidly in our office, but they are potent and can be fatal in many people.
so here's why i wrote this post, and maybe it's a little late, but - if you care about your loved ones, please get tested if you know you're sick. it doesn't have to be at a clinic if you don't want it to, because the over-the-counter tests work just fine too (if you test within 5-7 days of symptom onset). just...please don't try to run from the knowledge that you might have covid, because immunocompromised people, elderly people, people with co-morbidities like asthma, pregnancy, diabetes, etc...many of them may not recover. and they may not be sitting at your holiday table in the future because of it.
hey everyone, great news! starting monday we're relaxing our don't-piss-in-the-pool requirements and no longer mandating that swimmers control their bladders while in the water. of course if you're more comfortable not pissing in the pool, you may continue to do so - everyone should make the pee decision that feels safest for them and their family. please respect everyone's choice about where to pee. thanks 😊
I've got health issues but likely would survive it don't wanna chance it to begin with but my partner really makes it rage provoking with how immunocomprimised they are they'd likely just die and I'm still pissed at how many people went "eldery vulnerable or disabled? Oh so not me? YAYYYY HOT GIRL SUMMER I WANNA GO PARTY FREEDOM!" And slapped every disabled person giving support and advice through the trenches of illness the pain of developing chronic illnesses and frankly were a social backbone to surviving covid in the face as soon as it was convenient
It's changed my perspective on people more than anything else has
Lots of stuff I've had to actively unlearn on other movements so I gave grace but literally preferring freedom to party instead of avoiding killing people!? Thats fucking foul.
gentle reminder sick and disabled people still cant go outside and havent had a normal life in over 2 years now and seemingly wont be able to go outside do their groceries, go to events and meet w friends in any foreseeable future. like at all. like not "if we're all vaxxed its fine". like not "if im masked up w an ffp2 its fine". idk think about it
