Dad!eddie Munson - Tumblr Posts
YES
this feeds all of my fantasies about eddie being a dad đĽšđĽš itâs the sweetest thought
STOP IT I AM SOBBING RIGHT NOW!!!! AND THEY USED EVH FOR IT WHICH MAKES IT 1000000000000x MORE ADORABLE!!!
Picture it though:
You're sat in the living room, video camera in hand, pointed at a shirtless Eddie Munson. In his hands he holds his six month old daughter, tickling her belly and causing an eruption of giggles. "Who's daddy's best girl, hm?" He would coo at his young child, peppering kisses over her chubby cheeks. The camera pans closer to see her holding Eddie's finger, using it to boop her nose "My little angel; Our little miracle." Eddie teared up, smiling widely at the person who helped bring his mini-me into the world. Every shit thing in his life erased, now that he has a new purpose - being the best rockstar father your daughter could ever have
Can I get a..detailedâŚEddie holding you through morning sickness please
omg omg heâs so sympathetic to the whole thing!!! cw: morning sickness, pregnancy, and crying because of the pain
youâre up before the sun, a routine youâve found yourself in over the last month.
your stomach rolls as you sit up, your hands rubbing your belly doing nothing to settle the rolling that only intensifies.
âplease no baby.â you beg softly but itâs no use. really at the point you should just accept the level of sickness that youâre feeling- yet you canât, itâs like every night your memory is wiped of how awful the first moment is.
youâre up with swift movements, thankful for the toilet thatâs uncovered as you bring up coconut water and bile.
eddieâs up seconds after your first sick sound and is behind you as he rubs the sleep from his eyes.
âyouâre okay baby,â he mumbles lowly, voice scratchy as his hands rub at your back.
thereâs not much for you to bring up, youâd been having soups and mainly liquids at night to avoid the burn in your throat- but your baby doesnât care at all.
âitâs alright sweet thing.â eddieâs falling into his routine of wetting a cloth and wiping your mouth before dashing away your tears and pulling your face to his bare chest.
âhowâs your stomach?â heâs always soft and gentle as he flushes the toilet and waits for your answer, feeling the haphazard patterns your tears make on their way down his chest.
âempty.â youâre breathless as you feel your mouth water again, though thereâs truly nothing left to come up.
âwant toast and jam?â heâs been asking his uncle wayne about what you can eat with morning sickness and theyâre both clueless but are trying everything youâd offer to a sick baby.
speaking of wayne thereâs a rustle in the trailer and then his door is opened.
âshe okay?â he mirrors eddieâs concern and for a split second you smile. heâs not eddieâs biological dad, but theyâre one and the same.
âperfect, your grandkid is really working hard tonight.â you joke and he smiles and offers a small shrug.
âyou kids want toast? or maybe a piece of melon?â your eyes brighten at the fruit and eddie laughs at the way you scramble to sit up.
âi take it you want the melon then. come on kid, thingâs fucking huge.â eddie plots kisses along your hairline as you sit at the small dinner table as you watch them cut up the fruit before they hand over a bowl and join you.

author notes: i should be working on my series, but every time i think about itâs timeline, i end up wanting to post about that specific thing, so hereâs a little bit of eddie munson x fem!reader as the young parents i constantly think of them as. itâs gotten worse with all those eddie look alikes with babies pics going around. oh, and reader and eddie eloped on graduation night like i know we ALL would have done. Technically part of the CYM verse but can be read out of it. Can't put a read more thing because Tumblr won't let me, sorry. reader is 22 and Eddie is 23.

You were on the edge of a nap, not quite out of it but not quite present. An American Tail was playing in the background, but the noise grew further and further away from your subconscious. Until you felt a sudden blunt, rough jab against your closed eye. That definitely brought you back.
You groaned, a hand reaching up to press and rub against your eye as you heard a quiet chuckle from the right of you. Once the pain had subsided, you tried your hardest to glare at your husband. It was more of a squint than anything. He didnât even attempt to hide his smirk from his place, sat man-spread on the couch with his arms over the top cushions. âI thought about stopping her, but she looked too cute concentrating like that.â
Your gaze shifted towards the culprit, curled up nearly on top of your side. Your daughter grinned at you, displaying her tiny little teeth. Staring up at you with her fatherâs big brown, Bambi like eyes, and a wild head of curls that looked to be a mix of both of her parentsâ, it was obvious she was unapologetic and satisfied with herself for abruptly coaxing you from what was promising to be a nice nap. You had been spread out on the floor in front of the tv, playing with your daughter whenever she grew bored of the cartoon displayed before her. Eddie had been tuning his guitar before sheâd woken up from her nap, and had switched to simply observing you two. Eventually, the movie had gained her attention, and you had decided it was your turn for a nap but apparently not. âPenny, ow.â You frowned at her gently. You werenât big on punishing her because she was a pretty good kid, but sheâd just entered the terrible twoâs and you were hoping to put off the terrible for as long as you could by encouraging her to recognize good and bad.
âMama ow?â She repeated, voice full of innocence and surprise, because obviously your baby hadnât intentionally meant to hurt you. Once you nodded, still faking a frown, she made a face of her ownâyou loved how expressive she was, definitely something she got from Eddieâand moved further up your body until she was eye level with you.
You could immediately tell what her intentions were, so your eye shut to prepare for the kiss she pressed to it. âMwah! No ow!â
âThank you, Penny!â You cooed, pressing kisses into her round, chubby little face. âAwe, my girls! Love it when they kiss and makeup.â Came your husbandâs responding coo. You blew him a kiss from your place on the carpet, fingers stroking over Pennyâs curls. âThanks for no help.â
âHeyâI warned you sheâd have me wrapped around her drool covered fingers. Besides, I couldnât have got to her in time.â He made no move to join you on the ground, too taken with watching you interact with the literal proof of your love for each other.
Two whole years later, and he was still often left stupefied as he watched you with her, completely in love with how she was a perfect mixture of you both, so much that it was difficult for most people to decide on who she looked like most. If people saw her with just Eddie, she looked like his little twin, albeit with a little more saturation and curls much more voluminous than his, and if they saw her with you, she looked like your Mini Me, with a lower saturation.
Thatâs how Eddie saw her. Youâd argue that her facial expressions imitated his, but all he saw was the same cute little nose crinkle that had been his doom when heâd first met you, peering up at him.
Penny had his eyes, there was no denying that. Now that he was a victim to your daughterâs puppy dog stare, he often liked to wonder about how much you had allowed him to get away with because of his own. His kid was using his own tricks against him.
âSheâs a girl on a mission,â You muse, your attention returning to the two year old in question, but it wasnât your attention she had wanted in the first place this time.
Pennyâs stare was focused on the area of your body sheâd previously been resting against. And then like a snake, she struck. She dove for your covered boob, mouthing at it so aggressively you couldnât do anything but burst out laughing. Eddie quickly joined you, hand forming a fist to press against his mouth as he shook with it. Penny had been clingier than ever since you had slowly, but surely, started to ween her off your breasts; however, what with being a baby and all, she still lacked the impulse control to keep her desperation at bay. âOh, yeah.â Eddieâs chest puffed out once youâd both calmed down, and you had caved to your daughterâs demands, lifting your shirt over your boob so she could nurse. Penny seemed so pleased with herself for amusing her daddy because she also couldnât stop bobbing around while she was attached to you. âThatâs my baby girl.â You rolled your eyes affectionally, turning your head to stare at him while she played more with your nipple than nursed. You were hoping if you stayed relax, she somehow wouldnât remember she had teeth. âYou know, this is all your fault. Youâre always going on and on about how you were the main ingredient for her recipe, but Iâm the one she gnaws on. Itâs not fair.â
âI agree,â he snorted. âIt should be me gnawing on your tit.â
âEddie!â
âWhat?â He laughed out, his pretty eyes getting all squinty as he stayed fixated on you with a look no short of adoration slapped on his face. âItâs true! I can barely get to second base âcause she always leaves your nipples sore. I love her so much, and Iâll let her twist my nipples off,â Penny had decided that was what they were best for once she realized she couldnât get anything from them like she could yours after a few misguided attempts, âwhen weâre cuddling before bedtime, but she refuses to share you. And all I get to do is sit back and watch her have fun.â
That wasnât entirely the truth, while the green eyed monster did flare its head for about .1% of the time he spent watching you take care of her and nurse her, the other 99.9% felt absolutely primal. It was crude, but the reality of it was Penny had originally been a creampie, just with a surprise in it. Youâd both been stunned when you learned you were pregnant, though he had suspected it due to a few subtle changes in your behavior. It wasnât something you really panicked over, it was just that something was. . .well, it just was.
It also helped that all he wanted out of life was to be happy with you and by the grace of some God, you shared that desire. So, Penny had come to fruition. And just like when heâd met you, Eddie found himself discovering another thing he wasnât sure how he had lived so long without. Fatherhood.
No gig, no high, nothing would ever compare to that immense pride, that absolute satisfaction that coursed through him as he watched you hold her tiny little body against your bare chest in that hospital room for the first time before sheâd been whisked away to the NICU.
âShe has been clingy,â You agreed, eyes glazing over as you recall the last time you and Eddie were able to completely ravage each other and not just fuck whenever you could. It had been like four days ago, but that was still too long. âBut.â
Eddieâs head tilted, his stare darkening as he waited patiently for you to continue.
âBut, but, but. Since she hasnât had as many opportunities, Iâm not all that sore and tired anymore.â
Eddie sprang up from his place on the couch, plucking Penny right off your boob. It was obvious even to him that she was just playing with it at that point, and it was time he had his turn. âCâmon, little bitty pretty one, Uncle Dustin and Uncle Steve want to babysit you for an unforeseeable amount of time today.â

âDude.â Argyle leaned in for a closer look, staring deeply into the unimpressed, brown eyes peering up at him from her place in her bouncer, tiny fists curled near her head, fuzzy with dark curls. âYou had a baby.â Eddie snickered while Jonathan shook his head in amusement. âYeah, I know that, man.â âNoâyou donât get it, man! Like, you had a baby. Youâre a dad. She is composed of half of your DNA. The fruit of your looms!â Jonathan choked on the cold pizza heâd been scarfing down at that bit of Argyleâs rant. âSheâsâOh, she got your eyes, too.â Argyle ended on a coo, a finger reaching down to run over her soft, chubby cheek. From the moment you and Eddie brought Penny home three weeks ago, youâd been attached to her. Utterly and completely obsessed with the perfect little being your body had spent months creating. While youâd been initially incredibly hesitant to meet herâcoherently, at least, sheâd been placed on your chest briefly when youâd been having a horrible out of body experience from the pain of having just pushed her out seconds beforeâit was hard for you to put her down now. You blamed that newborn baby smell. It was your weakness, if she was cradled against you, your head was angled down to sniff at her hair. You loved bonding with her in general, but your mother had made sure Eddie knew to not let you withdraw from society once Penny came, and then sheâd told Eddie all about Postpartum Depression, effectively scaring the shit out of him. So thatâs how you ended up having a girlâs day with Nancy, Eden and Robin. Sure, youâd started crying after showering your little baby in kisses and love and youâd had to be literally dragged out by the girls but Eddie knew youâd have a good time.
Just like he knew he could totally handle Penny on his own. Jonathan and Argyle had come along with the girls, but both were entirely too curious about Penny to leave. Not at all because Eddie had body blocked the door once they realized their ride was driving off. Alright, he was still scarred from day two out of the hospital. Max and Lucas had come over to the trailer to visit PennyâLucas loved holding her, you found it so cuteâwhen you had gone to change Pennyâs diaper and immediately began crying out for help. Eddie had never bolted so fast in his entire life with Max and Lucas on his heels, and the sight that greeted them was horrifying in a new parent sort of way. Penny had shit so violently once youâd undone her diaper that it was splattered on the wall, she was peeing all over your hands, and sheâd thrown up, the milky looking substance also leaking out of her little nostrils. She herself didnât look at all phased by what sheâd just done. So, yeah. Maybe he needed a little back up for now. âWhoâs got beautiful, angel eyes? Whoâs got beautiful angel eyes? You do! You do!â Eddie watched Argyle gently tap her little nose, and his heart warmed when he could see his baby smiling around her pacifier. He knew it was probably just gas since she was starting to learn how to use her face, but he liked to imagine she knew just how much everyone loved her; that sheâd never have to feel like he did growing up, unloved and alone until Uncle Wayne had stepped in when his father had been arrested and he had no one else. His kid had family. And a damn good one at that. âYou can pick her up, if you want.â âWhoa.â Jonathan warned. âHey now.â Argyle took a physical step back from the newborn, eyeing her skeptically. âAnd risk dropping herâman, thatâs not cool.â
âYou wonât drop her, so long as you hold onto her. Kind of common knowledge, but simply donât let go.â Eddie rolled his eyes, stretching forward from the couch to slip his finger into her tiny little hand. She gripped onto it immediately, and he leaned closer to give it a kiss, inhaling the scent of her skin. He couldnât blame you for sniffing her all the timeâshe did smell ridiculously good.
âFine, man. Then you get her out of that chair thingy, âcause I donât wanna hurt her or something. Iâm used to Edenâs siblings, theyâre like uh a little older by like a lot and stupid invincible. One of her brothers came down the driveway on his bike just when I pulled up and I hit him with my car. Little dude just got right back up, kicked me and left!â Eddieâs eyes were wide as saucers as he carefully pulled Penny out of her bouncerâthe three of them collectively awing in adoration when her lower half scrunched up on instinct as she brought her hands to the sides of her headâ and stood up in front of Jonathan. âYou get first dibs since you donât currently have a likely hood of hitting my daughter with a car at some point in her life.â Jonathan immediately looked like he wanted to runaway, but ended up hesitantly accepting Penny into the crook of his arms as Eddie handed her over. It had been a while since he last held a baby, the last having been Will and heâd been a kid then, too.
He took to it naturally, though, his body relaxing as he held up her hand, thumb rubbing gently over her soft palm. Her squishy little fingers wrapped over his thumb as she stared up at him, most likely curious about a face sheâd seen a couple of times before, but not so often this close. Or maybe she wasnât thinking at all.Â
âSheâs so. . . small.â That wasnât what he meant, heâd meant she looked so innocent, so fragile to the world around her. She wasnât even his kid, but the longer he held her, the more sure he became of the fact that heâd kick ass to keep her safe, something he didnât do very often, but very effectively. âIâm an uncle.â Eddie smirked, filled with pride as his daughter won another skeptic over. Jonathan ran a hand over her head, mindful of her soft spot, in awe of how soft her hair was. Damn, she really was cute. And she did have Eddieâs eyes. âSheâs a pretty baby.â He commented, moving his thumb around in her hold. âNot gonna lie, I thought sheâd you know, be a little ugly when she came out, what with having been squished through a hole, but no. She was even a pretty newborn.â Eddie admitted, he hadnât seen a whole lot of newborn babies before Penny, but he knew they looked like little aliens fresh out the womb. âYou and baby mama must have been some pretty cute looking babies, then. Any kids Eden and I have are screwed, man. I was hairy as hell and Iâve seen her baby pictures, letâs just say theyâre gonna get double takes.â Argyle ranted, but he too was focused on Penny and Jonathan, looking a little envious. Once Jonathan got his fair share, he shifted her around in his hold, making sure to support her head as he transferred her into Argyleâs ready and waiting arms. He seemed to change his tune after witnessing Jonathan hold her and successfully not throw her across the room like a football.
Unlike Jonathan who hadnât wanted to move her around too much in his grasp, Argyle sat her up right, making sure to support her head at Eddieâs prompting. Penny looked startled as her body tried to slump forward, stopped by Argyleâs hold on her. The pacifier stopped moving, and Eddie tensed, waiting for the cry but it never came. Instead, the pacifier began to move again and she let out a soft grunt, but she didnât seem to mind all that much.
He relaxed, sinking into the couch on Jonathanâs other side. Argyle noticed her drooping lids and deciding to be brave, placed her back into her bouncer as gently as heâd seen Eddie handle her.
Eddie couldnât help but grin down at her, taken with the way theyâd drop completely only to shoot back up. He was reminded of all the late night conversations the two of you had, and how you always fought sleep off, keen on talking to him instead of sleeping. Your eyelids would get all droopy, youâd close your eyes, and then catch yourself, snapping up and briefly awake before doing it all over again. Eddie wondered how many more memories of you looking at Penny would trigger for him. He couldnât wait to figure it out. As if she knew he was thinking about her, Pennyâs gaze wandered to him and he locked eyes with a pair identical to his own. Then she forced her pacifier out of her mouth and began to wail something fierce. They all jumped up immediately, eyes wide at the sudden drop in her mood. âWhat did I do? Was it something I said?â Argyle asked, blaming himself as he began to panic. Jonathan was running his hands through his hair, distressed.  âNo, you didnât do anything,â Eddie reassured him as he picked Penny back up and walked to the small kitchen, grabbing a bottle from a recent feeding attempt. âYou hungry, little bitty pretty one?â He held the bottle to her lips but that only seemed to make her angrier as she struggled against it, head moving away from the nipple. Her face was all squished up and took on a darker tint as her wails died down to whimpers. Eddie knew what that meant. He was quick to place the bottle back down, but the damage was done. Penny was silent for the briefest of moments before she began shrieking. Water started to pull in the inner corners of her eyesâa new development, up until two days ago, all she could do was cry but her body hadnât produced tears yetâand she let her little lungs ring loud in the trailer. Eddie knew his neighbors were probably cursing up a storm but they could kick buckets for all he cared. âIâm sorry, sweetheart. Thatâs not what you wanted, was it? My poor girl. Daddyâs gonna make it right.â Eddie soothed, cradling her to his chest with one hand holding the back of her head. It seemed to do some good, hearing his voice had stopped the piercing shrieks, but she was still crying and very loudly. He pulled her little baby bottoms back to check her diaper, but it was still clean so she couldnât be upset about that. Eddie sighed, raising her a little higher on his chest so he could nuzzle her, pressing kisses into her sweet smelling hair.
Then it hit him. Penny was tired. That was it. She was just tired but unable to fully slip into blissful slumber on her own and she was upset about it. Eddie wanted to beat his head against the fridge for having overlooked something so obvious. He reached down to turn the knob of the radio, bringing it to life before he began searching for a station. Once heâd stumbled upon one crooning out oldies, he swayed, patting her bottom to further soothe her.
Pennyâs cries died down almost immediately, turning into soft grunts instead as her lids began to droop again. It was after Eddie started singing along, his voice low and soft, that she was finally able to fall asleep, snuggled up to her daddy with a fist full of his hair that was most definitely going to be super fun getting out of her grip without waking her. Eddie turned to find Jonathan and Argyle watching them. Jonathan had a ghost of a smile on his face while Argyle stared at him in wonder. âDude. Youâre a dad. You just did a dad thing!â Jonathan grinned. âI agree. Looks like Iâm the only freak in town now, youâre Eddie âThe Dadâ Munson, now.â âHell yeah, Iâll take it.â Eddie didnât bother trying to hide his smile, he was cheesingâ it up. Youâd called him something similar a couple of times. Teased him about being Eddie âThe DILFâ Munson, which was really unfair given you hadnât been cleared by your doctor to have sex yet, so he couldnât make that a reality. âItâs crazy how this time last year, we were freshly graduated, you were eloping against every single adultsâ opinion and now you have a baby. Itâs mind boggling. But like, at the same time itâs not. . .I donât know, help me out here.â Argyle slapped the back of his hand against Jonathanâs shoulder a few times.
âBeing a dad suits you. Youâre good at it. Youâre a good dad and a good family man.â Jonathan supplied, meaning every word. Heâd know, he had a shitty dad like Eddie did.
That one simple statement hit Eddie hard, and he held Penny just a little tighter to his chest. âGotta give her everything I didnât have.â â You nearly broke the door down when youâd gotten back to the trailer. Despite your hesitance to leave Penny, youâd actually enjoyed the time with your friends. Sure, you spent every single second you werenât talking thinking about your little family, but you still had fun. The car ride back was spent wondering how much of a mess the place would be. Robin was expecting there to be a small kitchen fire, Eden was expecting one of the boys to be crying, Nancy was just curious to see how Jonathan had lasted in the presence of a baby. For future after college and established careers purposes, of course. You had faith in Eddie, had seen how quickly he had and still was adapting to being a dad. The others you couldnât ball park so your money was on Argyle being the crybaby to which Eden quickly agreed.
But you hadnât come home to any of that. The boys were all sat on the couch, fawning over your baby who had woken up in much better mood. âMy baby!â You made grabby hands as they got up to greet you, and Eddie let you scoop her up from his arms in exchange for a kiss. You could hear Robin gagging when she realized she was third wheeling three different couples, so you assumed Nancy and Eden were also receiving âwelcome backâ smooches. You leaned down to violently inhale Pennyâs new baby smell, pulling back with a look of satisfaction on your face. âThatâs the good stuff. Howâd it go?â Eddie laughed as he pressed a kiss to your forehead and trailed a finger through Pennyâs curls. âOh, you know. Nothing I couldnât handle.â
âJust say that one day you will.â
Dad!Eddie Munson x mom!reader
summary: a short fic about eddie and reader as parents to patty munson:)
warnings: allusions to eddie having a âpast lifeâ, mentions of having self doubts as a parent. i think thatâs it?? let me know if i missed anything!

Heâs covered in food, spit up. Probably pee, too. His head hurts from his hair being pulled. His stomach aches from not having time to eat. Heâs exhausted. He never realized how much you had taken on being a mother until you went back to work at the newspaper office. He didnât know how you did. How flawless you made it look. Motherhood suited you, and as much as he loved his baby, he wasnât sure if he looked as graceful handling it all like you did.
âCome on, baby, eat something for daddy, huh?â His voice is soft, eyes wide and whimsical, hoping he can trick his daughter into taking her bottle. âIf youâre cranky when mommy gets home that means mommy will be cranky. Mommyâs scary when sheâs cranky, yes she is.â His using his baby voice, putting the top of the bottle to little Patty Munsonâs lips.
Itâs clear to him that sheâs not hungry, even though itâs past her time to eat. Sheâs refused to go down for a nap, crying every time heâs put her down or left the room to use the bathroom. Eddie sighs, putting down the bottle on the table and leaning back into the couch. He holds her on his lap, the seventh month old staying upright by his arms. She smiles, making him laugh.
âYeah, you think itâs funny watching me struggle, huh?â He wiggles his brows at her. âYou just want held, donât ya?â
Patty was going through another one of her phases where she couldnât be alone, never wanting to be without mom or dad. She always needed to be in their arms, preferably mommyâs. âWell, I donât have a problem with that.â He lifts her up and gives her a kiss on the nose.
Sheâs the carbon copy of him. Dark curls and brown eyes, pale skin and a birthmark on her right shoulder, same place as her dadâs. He worries one day sheâll be just like him. His older now, and when he looked back on his childhood, he felt guilty for worrying Wayne the way he did. He hoped he could raise his daughter to have more sense than he did growing up.
When five oâclock rolled around, Eddie had managed to get the house moderately straightened up. It was difficult with a baby attached to his hip. The dishes were done and the bed was made. Halfway through he had put her in the playpen, only to take her out when she had a meltdown. He nearly broke his neck running back to her.
âOh, baby.â He nearly fell to his knees when you walked through the door.
âHowâs my baby!â You smiled, running to lift your daughter from his arms. She was flailing her little limbs, squealing and laughing joyfully at the sight of you.
âIâm okay.â Eddieâs arm relaxes from the absent weight, the numbness running down his arm that he tries to shake out. âA little tired.â
You laugh at him, giving kiss after kiss to Pattyâs cheeks. Sheâs giggling, drooling all over her red and white dress that was covered in food stains.
âHi, baby.â You smile and turn toward him, kissing his cheek lovingly. âRough day?â
âWhat makes you say that?â He sighs, running a hand through his hair. âHouse is still standing, isnât it?â
You sit on the couch, holding Patty on your lap. Eddie sits down beside you, relaxing into the couch cushions.
You smile affectionately, grabbing his hand and giving it a squeeze. âHoney, are you sure youâre able to do this? I can take off work for a few more weeks if you need me to.â
âNo, no, Iâve got it, babe.â He puts his other hand over yours. âI do. Promise. You did your part. Carried her for nine months and spent another six taking care of her. You need a social life to, y/n. Itâs time I do my part.â He smiled at you lovingly, meaningfully.
âWeâre finally at a place where money isnât a problem,â He continues. âI want you to be happy and have a job you love. I donât mind taking off work for awhile. Wayne and Gareth got the Job okay.â
Your emotions are flooding through you, causing you to get choked up inside. You sigh, laying your cheek on the dark curls of Pattyâs head. âI am happy, Eddie. You have no idea how happy I am.â
He always chuckled when you said that, because he did. Eyes flickering between his now sleeping baby, cuddled into your chest, he rolls his eyes. âNow, she wants to sleep. Iâve been trying to get her to nap all day!â
You pat her back and smile happily, kissing the top of her head. âGod, I love her so much.â You say quietly. âIsnât it crazy? Loving her as much as you do? Sometimes I think my hearts going to explode.â
He never knew he could love someone as much as his daughter. When he met you, he never thought his love could go any further than that, but it was like his heart grew and made room for the both of you. It connected you, having Patty together. It made you closer than you couldâve ever imagined.
âI know what you mean.â His fingers squeeze her socked foot. âSometimes I lay awake at night and just worry about all the things that could happen. I think thatâs why Iâm tired all the time.â He chuckles softly.
You understood that, too, nodding as you lean back into the couch pillow. He moved over to you, careful to not wake up Patty, and lays his head against your shoulder. âThank you for giving me this life. I donât deserve either of you.â
âYes, you do.â You blink tiredly, looking down at his bushel of curls. âYou deserve happiness, Eddie. I wish you believed me.â
He truly believed he didnât. Though he was not the same man he once was, he had gone through his life a thief and cheating man, a liar and a conman. The things he had done haunted him at night, but you assured him he had done the things he needed to do to survive.
âOne day,â He looks up at you, nose barely an inch apart. âIâll make you my wife.â
You start to blush, eyes prickling at the sides. God, you were so happy. âReally?â
âJust say that one day you will be.â He whispers, glancing at your lips briefly. âPromise me youâll be my wife.â
You sniffle and choke on a sob, smiling at him through your lashes. âI promise.â

You and Eddie had fallen into a rhythm, he came over most weeknights for dinner and would sometimes stay over when he accidentally stayed too late.
He would usually sleep on the couch or on the recliner chair in the nursery if Winnie was being particularly fussy. It was nice to have him around again, though the question of what your relationship was hung heavy over the both of you. You ignored it for the most part but late afternoons were spent watching Winnie and Eddie exist together like it was so natural and sometimes, just for a moment, you let yourself believe that nothing had ever happened. This was just how things were, this was the life you got to live.
Eddie had been around plenty of kids, but this was slightly different. Because babies werenât technically yet kids. Steveâs son was about three months younger than Winnie. He wasnât talking yet, he said baby babble and that was it.
Winnie had certain words down.
Her new favorite being âno.â
Every opportunity she had to use this new fancy word she took. Whether it was a whine over it being bedtime or a simple answer to a question or a shriek when bath time inevitably came around, no was said. No was said with such vigor that somehow it managed to cancel out the noâs she was told by you and Eddie.
And a no mixed with her now being able to walk was almost impossible to deal with at times.
It was a bath time tantrum that caused a slight emotional breakdown for you.
Eddie had a date tonight, which already put you in a somewhat sour mood, despite the fact that you were the one to suggest it.
You felt bad that he was giving you so much of his life, and while he didnât mind it was eating away at you. You guys werenât a couple and you werenât exactly at a point in life where dating was a priority and you wanted him to be able to have fun and go out. It wasnât fair that you keep him with you to help take care of your kid.
So he was out with Delia, who he had met at work when she went to get some maintenance done on her car.
You had found her number in his wallet when grabbing some cash to tip a pizza guy the other week and you had encouraged him to call her.
And now both you and your daughter were in a sour mood due to his absence.
She had already all but refused her dinner, but what she did decide to eat was mushed into her shirt so you had told her it was time for a bath And now you were sitting on your bathroom floor while Winnie repeatedly said, âno mommy! No baf!â While she played with her bath toys on the floor.
âCome on, baby, please?â
She shook her head, her signature pout finding its way to her lips as she began to cry in frustration.
âNo baf mommy!â She insisted and you sighed.
âWhat do I have to do to get you to take a bath, Winnie-Bear?â You asked and she huffed.
âNo Baf!â She reiterated and you groaned.
âCome on, baby, take a bath and then we can watch Bambi or Eeyore and then Eddie will be here to put you to bed and tuck you in and read you a story.â Winnie shakes her head again, âWinifred Lane you need to take a bath!â You snap and her bottom lip juts out and she begins sniffling.
âIâm sorry, baby, I just need you to-â youâre interrupted by a Little People Horse figurine hitting you in the eye.
âMean mommy.â She wails.
You canât help but cry too.
Throwing was another addition she had discovered recently but she hadnât quite gotten the concept of aim. It was likely she hadnât meant I throw it at you, she was just frustrated and didnât know what to do with it.
And the rational part of you knows that but the shock of it causes you to start crying too, covering your eye.
You simply stand up, trying to hide your misty eyes from Winnie as you walk out of the bathroom, leaving her standing there, wailing.
And That was the moment Eddie just had to walk through the door.
âWhatâs Wrong? Whereâs Winnie?â He asks immediately, using the pads of his thumbs to wipe the tears from your cheeks but you donât want it. Youâre too overwhelmed, you donât want to be touched or talked to or to hear your baby sobbing from the other room.
So you just point to the bathroom and then walk around him.
When Eddie goes into the bathroom Winnie is red in the face and crying so hard she can barely breathe.
âAw, sweetheart.â He mumbles, âbreaking my heart.â
He sits on the floor by her and holds out his arms, she climbs into his lap and sobs into his chest. He tries to sooth her the best he can, patting her back and humming âWinnie Lane is in my ears and in my eyesâ
He stands to pace around the small bathroom, continuing to pat her back.
âWhatâs wrong, girlie?â He asks her.
âMe-mean mommy.â She sobs.
Eddie shakes his head, âsheâs not mean, baby, sheâs just tired. I think youâre a little tired too.â
The mere suggestion makes her worse, âno daddy! No bed!â
Eddie freezes, âyou donât have to go to bed yet, baby.â
She looks up at him with her red face and dramatic pout and Eddie melts, holding her as close as possible, âand Iâm Eddie. Not Daddy. I know they sound similar but they arenât-â
âNo.â She shakes her head, still hiccuping a little but calmed at the knowledge that sheâs not yet being sent to bed. She points a chubby finger at his chest, âdaddy.â
She says it like itâs the most obvious thing.
âSweetheart, why are you calling me that?â Eddie smiles.
âMamĂĄ Lena.â
The old Cuban woman must have just assumed. She had always liked Eddie so it made sense he supposed.
âDo you want to color?â He asks her, changing the subject in hopes of distracting her so he can check on you.
She nods and almost throws herself out of his arms.
He sets her up in her high chair with a coloring book and some crayons, helping her pick out a coloring page before quietly heading down the hall to the bedroom.
The lights are off but Eddie can make out the faint outline of the bundle of blankets on the bed, the unmistakable snuffles coming from it make his heart squeeze.
âSweetheart?â He coos softly to you but you just sniffle again. He sits on the bed, kicking his shoes off before putting his feet on the bed cause he knows it drives you crazy, âcome on, can you sit up for me?â He reaches to the nightstand and flicks on the lamp.
You peek your head out of the blanket and he frowns at your tear streaked cheeks and at the one eye that seems redder than the other.
âWhat happened, sweetheart?â Eddie says softly, wiping away your tears with his thumb and moving your hair out of your face.
âShe just got so upset, I just wanted her to take a bath but she was fussing and whining and I snapped at her and she started to cry and she threw a toy at me and it kind of shocked me and I just couldnât do it and then you got here and I mustâve looked like the worst mom in the world but I just-â
âHey,â he scooches closer to hold you better and you rest your forehead on his bicep,âyouâre a great mom, you just got a little overwhelmed and I wasnât here to help like normal, itâs okay.â
You scrunch your eyebrows together, âwhy are you back so early?â
Eddies eyes widen and he avoids your gaze, âjust got tired.â
âEddie.â
He sighs, âI hated it. She was great, she was fun to talk to but then I just kept talking about Winnie and I hated leaving the two of you here and disrupting Winnieâs normal and by the end she just told me to go home.â
âIâm sorry.â You mumble, picking at your thumb nail.
âWhy are you sorry?â
âI feel like I somehow ruined your date.â
âYou did no such thing.â Eddie sighs, âand from what I can tell itâs good that I came home when I did. Apparently all hell breaks loose when I leave for too long.â
You scoff and roll your eyes, allowing yourself to lean into him a little bit more, âwe did miss you though.â
âI missed you, too. Letâs get some ice on your eye.â
âItâs fine, Ed's, it's not even that bad.â You shrug, wiping your nose with your sleeve.
âNope. Just in case.â Eddie stands up and holds your hands to pull you up into a standing position.
You groan but get up and he holds your hand all the way down the hall.
âMommy!â Winnieâs little arms reach out to you and you pick her up, holding her close.
âHey, Winnie-girl.â
Eddie walks up to the both of you with a cold pack, inspecting your eye, âsheâs got quite the arm. Should sign her up for softball.â
âAnd let her get a concussion or sprain her ankle? Over my dead body.â
Eddie chuckles and shakes his head, holding the ice pack to your eye. Winnie reaches out to see what heâs got, jumping at the temperature.
âItâs cold, Winnie-bear.â Eddie informs her, using your nickname for her.
The three of you migrate to the couch, Eddie holding Winnie, âshe still needs a b-a-t-h.â You sigh.
âMaybe itâll go smoother with the both of us.â Eddie offers and you shrug.
âMaybe. Hey Winnie? How about that bath, baby?â
Immediately she pouts, looking at Eddie to save her. When he doesnât do anything she wraps her little arms around his neck and holds on tight, trying to distract him with a cuddle.
âCome on, after your bath I can read you a story and we can cuddle in your chair.â Eddie says and she shakes her head, âwell then I guess you donât want the new story I got you.â He sighs, âoh well. Maybe I can it read it to mommy since you wrong want to-â
âBaf, mommy?â Winnie perks up and you smile.
âCome on baby.â
She lets you give her a bath and dry her off. She picks out her pajamas and then pulls herself up into her chair, looking at Eddie expectantly, âsto-y, daddy?â
You look at Eddie with raised eyebrows, âdaddy?â
âUh, yeah I uh- miss Lena said something I guess. I tried to correct her earlier but she said no and-â
âSo long as you stick around I donât give a damn what she calls you.â You assure him, leaning your head into his shoulder, âthatâs all up to her.â
Eddie nods and maintains eye contact with you until Winnie lets out an impatient huff.
âIâm coming, Winnie Lane.â He smiles, swooping her up into his arm and attacking her chubby cheek with little kisses.
You leave so he can put her to bed.
ââ-
After about a half hour Eddie wanders into your room, eyes slightly droopy. You scorch over to give him room and he flops down on the bed next to you.
âCome here often?â He quips, laying on his side with his head resting on his hand.
You laugh and shake your head, ânot at all.â
âDamn. So I just got lucky, huh?â
âI guess so.â You shrug.
âHowâs your eye?â
âItâs alright. It doesnât hurt. I donât think it will bruise.â
âThatâs good.â
âHow was the date other than what you told me?â You inquire and Eddie exhales deeply, leaning back onto your headboard.
âIt wasnât bad. She was fun to talk to, the restaurant was nice. She could just tell that I had missed you and Winnie and she was sweet about it, but she told me that maybe dating wasnât something I wanted to do right now.â He explains and you nod.
âSo I guess youâre done with dating for the moment?â
âNo.â Eddie shakes his head and you involuntarily pout.
âWhat do you mean? You said you hated leaving Winnie and that you just needed to-â
âWell I figure if Iâm dating Winnieâs mom Iâll get to see her more.â He shrugs, a sly grin overtaking his features.
You pause slightly for a moment, you feel the blush creep into your cheeks and you have to really try not to stutter when you clarify, âWas that an ask out?â
âDepends on whether or not youâd say yes.â Eddie smiles, fiddling with his rings.
âyes.â You say a bit too quickly for you liking, âI mean- yeah, sure.â You think for a second more, âbut if it doesnât work out you have to still be there for Winnie. I would forgive my-â
âI'm not gonna leave you sweetheart. And I would never dream of leaving her.â Eddie reassures you, pulling you closer into him and kissing the top of your head.
He doesnât say the rest of what heâs thinking, which is that he had spent a year just wishing to have you back. There was no chance he would be letting you go anytime soon, or ever.
You nod and look up at him, wide eyed and smiley.
He looks back at you the same way and leans down, kissing you on the cheek.
You pout a little and Eddie smiles, knowing where Winnie got that habit from, âwhat?â
âEddie?â
âYes, sweetheart?â
âCan you grow a pair and kiss me for real?â You sigh and Eddie laughs.
âNothing Iâd rather do, sweet girl.â
He leans down and brushes your lips with his, you can feel his grin and smell his cologne and shampoo.
You wanted to bathe in that smell, to have it around you all the time.
And Eddie would gladly make sure you could always have right there with you. He would always make sure that he was right there with you.

Summary: . . . Under a raging storm, your difficult pregnancy comes to an end. And so might you. warnings: angst, a whole lot of angst, near death experience, difficult pregnancy, early labor, preterm birth, talk of loss of infants, birth defects, happy ending.
a/n: sorry I have to post this in parts, Wayne's World ended up being over 16k, so I split it up in three. part one's word count is 5.3k. this was a real labor of love and i hope you love baby wayne as much as i do. and for the people mad about the long post, sorry, had the 'keep reading' tab on but it kept fucking with the format and eating chunks of it. you're gonna have to scroll. let me know what you think? âĄĚ

âDo you have a queen of hearts?â âGo fish.â You grumbled as Wayne reached forward, liftingâbut making sure not to catch a look of the other sideâa card from the deck to hand you. Your frown deepened when it wasnât a pair for any of the cards you already had. âNuts,â you mumbled, eyes darting to all the pairs Wayne had matched up on the small living room table, then down to the four pairs you had placed over your bulging stomach. It was risky of you to keep them there so late in your pregnancy considering how active your baby was but you didnât feel like reaching too far for them, regardless of the fact that his kicks had sent them sliding down your sides twice now.
Youâd been playing card games with Wayne for the past hour and a half, the raging storm having knocked out the power for the entire park. Eddie was with your friends, no doubt trapped at the pizza place Lucasâ parents had booked to celebrate his birthday. His actual birthday had been a couple of days prior but the Hellfire session that would have celebrated it had been canceled; you werenât feeling too good and Eddie had stayed faithfully by your side. You hadnât been feeling all that great when youâd woken up today, either. Youâd forced Eddie to go, refusing to let Lucas down again even though you knew heâd understand. He was a sweetheart. So, Eddie had reluctantly gone, taking Penny with him.
The storm had come out of nowhere, youâd woken to a lovely day but you wouldnât know it from how dark the sky had grown; the sun having been blocked by heavy rain clouds.Â
Despite practically living at his girlfriendâs, just a couple of trailers down, Wayne had rushed over to make sure you were okay and to keep you company. Youâd been watching an Indiana Jones movie and talking to Wayne about the apartments you and Eddie were looking at when the power went out but Wayneâalways practical and level headedâpulled out some candles youâd accrued and a deck of cards he had remembered he stashed in one of the kitchen drawers to keep you amused.
Youâd lost just about every game. Clearly, Wayne wasnât going to let you win just because you were pregnant like Eddie did.
âThis ainât even one of them bettinâ games. Howâre you still losinâ?â Wayne chuckled, taking a sip of the tea (powdered, of course) youâd served him.Â
âJust my luck, I guess.â Wayne was referring to the game of Poker youâd played earlier. Unfortunately, you didnât know how to play. While he taught you a little along the way, youâd still obviously lost and you were positive you retained absolutely no knowledge regarding the game.
Sensing your frustration, Wayne leaned forward from his place on the recliner heâd dragged to the otherside of the small table and placed his cards down, settling back into the chair with his old man creaky noises that youâd grown comfortable with him enough to tease him about (and always made up for with a sweet kiss to his head).
âWhat say you anâ I just talk, hm?â
That was fine with you. You gathered the cards on your baby bump, tossing them onto the table alongside his, âEddie wonât let me name the baby after him.â
âReally?â Wayne asked, eyebrows furrowed in a brief moment of confusion. Heâd expected his eccentric nephew to want to leave behind some sort of legacy, nothing better than a child.
âHeâs playing devilâs advocate, shooting down every name I come up with but never giving his input, Iâm starting to think weâll have to just put names in a cup and pick one after I have him.â You slumped further into the couch, pouting through your exhaustion.
âNow that sounds like âim,â Wayne scoffed, raising the mug to his lips once more before he really took in your appearance.Â
You looked beyond exhausted, skin dull, dark circles around your eyes and you lacked the spark always attached to your personality. You didnât just look miserable, you looked sick.
The mug was placed back on the table as he regarded you with concern, âYou alright, darlinâ? Donât look so good.â
You gave him a tight lipped smile that didnât reach your eyes, hands settling to rest on your protruding tummy, âIâm okay, really, Wayne. Iâm just very tired. Iâve had high blood pressure for the last couple of months, so the doctor says Iâm considered high risk.â
You had a doctorâs appointment earlier this weekâwith another one scheduled for tomorrow afternoonâand sheâd also told you to do your best to relax, not to move around a lot and not worry too much about it, or it could get worse, so you added, âI just have to take it easy. Being tired just comes with it.â
Wayne didnât think it was right, if you were taking it easy, you shouldnât have been so exhausted. Tired, he could understand but you looked beyond that.
âWhy donât we get you into bed?â
You nodded, agreeing only because you wanted to let him get back to Maude. Wayne moved around the table, offering you his hands to help pull yourself up. It was pitiful, your stomach wasnât even that big but you were significantly weaker this pregnancy compared to when youâd been pregnant with Penny.Â
You slipped your hands into his, groaning as he pulled you up.
âLilâ manâs got you making old man noises, too,â He joked, referring to the grunts heâd make when he stood up with creaking bones for which youâd tease him.
You laughed, small but genuine as you placed your hands on your lower back and stretched, âAlright, alright. Youâre not wrong but Iâll remember this.â
Wayne chuckled at your response, hand on your shoulder ready to guide you to your bedroom. He had no intentions of leaving the trailer, planning on camping out on the couch or the pullout that was still tucked into the corner until Eddie returned.
Youâd just managed to get your back to pop in the most satisfying of ways when you felt a bit of pressure between your legsâlike you really needed to peeâfollowed by a rush of liquid.
âOh, fuck,â you mumbled, eyes squeezing shut to keep the mortification of having just pissed yourself in front of your father-in-law at bay, âI am so sorry, Wayne, I didnât even know I had to⌠toâŚâ
You trailed off, staring down at the wet patch of carpet surrounding your feet. There was no noticeable urine smell, but what really concerned you was the red mixed into it, staining the fibers of the carpet.
âWayneâŚâ Your voice was so small as you reached around you to hold your stomach, as if you could somehow protect your baby.
Wayne saw it too, eyes wide and horrified when heâd realized your water had broken.
âNew plan: letâs get you to the hospital.â He tried to urge you forward but you wouldnât budge, trembling in his hold.
âIâI canât,â you stated, voice hitching and laced with fear as you finally turned your head to look up at him. Wayne could see the terror in your eyes, the panic and the shine to them. Everything he was feeling inside, too, he just knew he had to keep it together for your sake. âIâm barely 30 weeks, heâs too early, he has to stay in there!â
You were nearly hyperventilating, head pounding as horrible thoughts raced through your head. Your hands moved frantically over your belly, trying to feel a kick from your baby. When was the last time you felt him being active? Was he okay? Why was he being so still? Why did your water break so early and why was there blood in it? And what the hell was that loud pounding sound? It was your heartbeat.
âHeyââmember whaâ you told me earlier? âBout what the doctor said? You gotta take it easy, right?â Wayne was panicking just as much as you but he knew he had to keep you calm, had to reassure you.Â
You swallowed hard, tears welling in your eyes as you nodded, following up with a watery confession, âYeah. But Iâm scared.â
âThasâ okay,â he stated, recalling a time heâd said the same thing to another scared mother-to-be just hours before Eddie had been born. âWeâre gonna get you to the hospital and theyâre gonâ take real good care of you. Everythingâs gonna be okay.â
For once, Wayne Munsonâs eyes were easy for you to read, you could see the sincerity of them, the certainty and despite the fear still coursing through you, you believed him.Â
Finally, you moved and Wayne sprang into action, asking you the whereabouts of your coat, if youâd had a hospital bag preppedâwhich thanks to Eddieâs paranoia, you didâbefore heâd actually carried you through the heavy rain, out to the car. Youâd been surprised, hadnât expected Wayne to be that strong since he was more so on the gangly side.
Heâd ensured you were buckled in, made a last run into the house to make sure the candles were out before the two of you were braving the storm.
It was a rough drive; Wayne was speeding but it wasnât enough, the pushback from the wind made it seem like he was going uphill, losing speed rather than gaining it. The windshield wipers on his truck were working overtime to clear the constant stream of water from his view.
You were faring no better, feeling weaker and more fatigued by the minute. Despite the cold weather, you skin became coated in a layer of sweat, though you were by no means hot. You couldnât even register your own body temperature, too out of it as your forehead pressed against the cool glass of the window.Â
âWeâre almost there,â Wayne promised, glancing nervously at your slumping figure. He was scared out of his mind now that he knew you werenât just sick. Wayne Munson was afraid you were dying before his eyes.
You stirred just as he was a few turns away from the hospital, face scrunching into a frown as you whimpered. Wayne thought you may have been in pain, he was wrong. You were hit with an intense need to push and you did, once and hard.
The dull thud of something hitting the floor mats was somehow louder to the two of you than the raging storm. Wayne glanced away from the road and inhaled sharply when he watched you look down at the unnaturally pale baby, the only color on his skin was that of some of your blood.
You reached down and picked up the smaller than normal baby, cradling him to your chest as you stared at his face. It was all squished up, and his eyes were closed, lips turning blue. He wasnât breathing.Â
You turned him over, belly down in your hold as you patted his back. As you grew more anxious and fearful, you pinched the bottom of his tiny, soft foot and while he didnât cry, he finally moved in your hold, his back expanding with his breath. A sign of life.
The relief you felt was short lasting, your fatigue returning full force as Wayne pulled up the emergency entrance. Two staff members ran to the truck, approaching as their rain ponchos danced wildly in the wind.Â
âSir, are either of you injured?â One of them, a woman asked before peering into the passenger window. At the sight of you, clutching the baby still connected to you via umbilical cord, the door was yanked open and she bellowed for a gurney which her partner sprinted to collect.Â
Wayne didnât bother moving his truck, it was towards the end of the entrance, anyways. He hurried out and followed as they loaded you and the baby onto the gurney, running alongside as they wheeled you in.Â
You were trying so hard to stay conscious, trying to ignore the sweet allure of closing your eyes for a few moments of rest. The doctors and nurses around you were all barking orders to each other with a couple trying to talk to you but you couldnât focus enough to know what they were saying.
Once Wayne saw what operating room they were carting you off to, he ran to the nearest desk, asked for use of the phone and phone book. Once heâd placed the call to the pizza place, relieved the lines were finally going through again, heâd had a staff member search for Eddie. It hadnât been easy hurriedly explaining to him what happened, but judging by how quick Eddie had ended the call, it was only a matter of minutes before his nephew turned up.
Then Wayne ran to the area heâd seen them take you too, hurriedly dressing in a gown, a cap and mask one of the staff had shoved into his arms. They were still prepping you when they finally allowed him in and you were no longer holding the baby. He was in the arms of a nurse, still connected to you with his umbilical cord.Â
âWould you like to cut it?â She hurriedly asked, offering him a pair of surgical scissors. Wayne figured he was a better option than a doctor severing your connection so he did as instructed. She immediately carried him away and out of the room in a rush.
âWhereâs she taking âim?â He asked, voice full of worry.Â
âNeonatal Intensive Care Unit,â He was informed by another nurse who was setting up a barrier over your lower half, âHe was born preterm.âÂ
Wayne was somewhat familiar with it; he remembers Penny had briefly been sent there when sheâd been born and suspected to have jaundice. After a few hours of whatever treatment, she was returned to you and Eddie, having a not very severe case of it which had been treated effectively.
Wayne thought the whole process would be faster, heâd seen people rushed into surgeries in the movies and it had been instant but it wasnât like that. They were still running around, setting everything up and new people kept coming into the room. It took more than ten minutes, but they were doing their best to keep you stabilized. He was holding your hand the entire time, squeezing every once in a while so youâd squeeze back and heâd know you were okay.
You werenât very vocal, eyes half lidded as they pumped you full of drugs to try to counter your symptoms and numb you.
ââM gonna check to see if Eddieâs here, alright?â He waited for your response, a very weak and monotonous okay before he gave your hand a final squeeze and let a nurse know heâd be checking to see if the father had arrived.
Heâd made it out of the operating room doors and was hurrying down the hallway, just about to breach another pair of large doors when they swung open and he had to jump back to avoid being hit.Â
âLORD!â He shouted and Eddie cursed, muttering a quick apology.
âWhere is she?â He panted out, chest heaving, eyes wild and frantic. Eddieâs hair was in disarray from having run his hands through it so many times as he sped to the hospital. He looked like the personification of panic, a mess.
âThrough them doors,â Wayne pointed in the direction heâd come from before yanking some of the sanitation wear off a nearby rack. âPut these on âfore you go in there. Whereâs Penny?â
Eddie was hurriedly yanking the scrubs over his clothes, âSheâs in the waiting room.âÂ
He clutched Wayneâs shoulder, wanting to thank him but desperate to get to you before he made a run for the room Wayne had directed him to while Wayne hurried to the waiting room, expecting Penny to be in the care of a nurse.
He breached the doors and stood shell shocked at the amount of people who jumped to attention, faces filled with varying degrees of worry, anguish and fear; it was all of your friends, familiar faces heâd seen in the trailer before at one point or another. Pennyâs curly head was visible from the arms of a tall redhead, wearing glasses.
It seemed the entire party occupying the pizza parlor had filled the hospital waiting room, concerned about your wellbeing.Â
The sight nearly brought Wayne to tears.
You could make out the sound of various monitors beeping, eyes trying to focus on the ceiling above you but everything was so hazy. You no longer felt fatigued, couldnât really feel anything. A nurse had tried to check in with you earlier, get your attention but you couldnât even hold a conversation.
You felt a hand slip into yours again, and you squeezed it, turning your head to look at Wayne. Only, it wasnât Wayne looking back at you. Eddieâs piercing brown gaze was easy for you to make out through the haze, and you were even able to smile.
âEddie.â You spoke it so softly but Eddie was still relieved, lowering his mask so he could press a kiss to your head.
âHi, baby,â he croaked out, tears pooling in the corners of his eyes as he stroked the side of your face.Â
âDadâs here,â one of the doctorâs greeted him. Eddie recognized her as your primary Obstetrician, Dr. Eisenerg, the same doctor you had all your appointments with and the same who had delivered Penny. âWould you like the rundown?â
 âPlease.â
âPre-eclampsia, I suspected as much during our last appointment, the next step would have been Bed Rest starting with tomorrowâs appointment, but baby couldnât wait that long, could he, mom?â
Eddie watched as you slowly shook your head, smile on your face because you were happy he was with you.
âHe was born nine weeks early, out of the hospital so unfortunately I donât know his stats at the moment, heâs being looked over and assessed as I speak. Heâs in good hands. Iâll have more information about him for you as soon as we get mom settled. Weâre performing a Cesarean section to get the placenta out, sheâs much too weak to push it out on her own.â
God, Eddie loved your doctor. Heâd write rock ballads in her honor for knowing exactly what to say to calm his ass down. After that, Eddie focused on you, trying not to pay attention to what was going on behind the cover theyâd put up.
âYou sure know how to scare the hell out of me, baby,â he mumbled, eyes crinkling as he smiled under the mask, caressing your pretty face again. Heâd never felt more fear in his entire life than when Wayne had spoken to him over the phone, informing him youâd had the baby early and they were taking you into surgery.
You smiled and Eddie chuckled at the doped up expression on your face. He hadnât seen it on you in months. You had to be high as a kite.Â
 âSorry, Eddie.â
âItâs okay.â He pulled his mask down to press a brief kiss to your lips which you happily returned. âAfter youâre out of here, Iâll go check on our little dude, okay?â
You nodded, reassured by Eddie that everything would be alright. You trusted him. Trusted him to let him know something you hadnât yet voiced.
 âIâm tired, Eddie.â
You slurred it so low, Eddie hadnât caught it. âWhat was that, sweetheart?âÂ
You didnât answer him, eyes fluttering shut as multiple monitors began to beep, one at a higher rate and one much slower than the rest.
âSheâs hemorrhaging,â Dr. Eisenberg informed her staff, and Eddie paled. Heâd heard that in enough hospital movies and shows to know it wasnât good. The relief heâd momentarily felt fled from his body, quickly replaced by dread.
He watched the movement around him, people shouting medical terms he couldnât understand. He made the mistake of peering around the cover to address your doctor, horrified at the amount of blood on her gloves and the sleeves of her gown.
 Was that all yours?
âWhatâs happening?â He demanded, breath hitching around the last word.Â
She didnât look up at him, asking one of the attendings to escort him out.Â
Eddie called your name, over and over again as he was pushed out of the room, fighting to keep you in his line of vision. Your face, too peaceful looking to be resting, was the last thing he saw before the doors shut in his face.
Heâd made it back to the waiting room on autopilot, collapsing into the free chair next to Wayne, who was now holding Penny. When heâd first walked in, it looked like everyone wanted to bombard him with questions, the look on his face must have stopped them.
He sat in that uncomfortable hospital chair, gaze unfocused and watery as he stared at nothing, the image of you on the operating table, eyes shut and appearing lifeless replayed in his head over and over and over again, torturing him.
He had no idea how long he was in a catatonic state, only forced out of it when he registered a firm grip on his shoulder, shaking him.
Wayne had been trying to get his attention since the moment a doctor called for him near the entrance of the hallway.
Eddie snapped up, catching sight of the small woman, lightning fast and nearly tripping over himself trying to reach her, desperate for any news on your status. You were going to be okay, right? You had to be.
 âEdward Munson?â She asked.
Eddie nodded, swallowing hard as he tried to find his voice, his throat was dry, felt like it was made of sandpaper when he cleared his throat, âY-yes.â
âIâm Doctor Houseman, Cardiothoracic surgeon, your son is one of my patients.â
Right away, Eddie felt a sense of dread ooze over him, thick, heavy and suffocating like tar.
âYour sonâs limbs, most of his organs and responses are developing well. Ten toes, ten fingers and he can hear fine. His sight is a little sensitive, but should improve rapidly as should his growth. We are, however, concerned about his heart.â
Eddie was sure heâd left his heart in that room with you, yet he still felt something in him plummet.
âHe has whatâs known as VSD: Ventricular Septal Defect. A hole in the wall of his heart. Itâs one of the more common heart defects at birth, normally the hole can close up on its own, be treated with medications or, if necessary, surgery. Because of his premature birth and how weak his body still is, he may not respond well to the medication and the odds of him surviving a surgery are low.â
He felt the bitter taste of bile rise in the back of his throat.
âWeâd like to keep him for an extended stay in the NICU, let the hole try to close on its own. It still may be too much for him, but itâs his best bet.â
Eddie squeezed his eyes shut at the first hot sting of tears, desperately trying to hold it together.
It appeared today would be the day Eddie Munsonâs world was due to come to an end, he knew he must have looked pitiful; a red-eyed, pale, clammy, crying mess on the verge of a nervous breakdown. You were lying on some operating table, bleeding out and now his sonâs heart could possibly stop on him. Eddieâs was broken. He was broken.
He sniffled, inhaling deeply before he forced his eyes back open, tears immediately cascading down his cheeks as he nodded and agreed with her plan.
Dr. Houseman regarded him with sympathetic eyes.
âMr. Munson, I donât believe in miracles. I used to be a general surgeon,â she started, âAnd then one day, my longtime boyfriend took me out for a night on the town, dancing. He had a heart attack that night, I spent the four hours in that waiting room thinking he was going to die. Iâm not religious, but I prayed and I prayed he wouldnât die. He did.Â
âI switched my practice, to see if I could save others from the same fate. Some I did, some were simply beyond anyoneâs reach. Then one day, they brought in a little girl. Tiny thing, frail, six years old, the size of a four year old and sheâd had a heart attack. I was sure she wouldnât make it, tried like hell to save her but sometimes the circumstances just donât work out in our favor and her body shouldnât have been strong enough. But it was. She pulled through and she survived. I donât believe in miracles, Mr. Munson, but she did teach me to have more faith in my patients. The same faith they have in me. Have faith in your son.â
Then she was gone, whirling out the doors sheâd come from. Eddie stared at them, wondering if she was on her way to tend to his baby. It wasnât fair, he hadnât even gotten to live yet, wasnât even a day old and he was fighting for his life.
Eddie felt Wayneâs firm grip on his shoulder and he turned around, briefly staring into his sorrow filled eyes before he collapsed into his arms and sobbed, shaking with each one that wrecked through his body.
Wayne held him like he did when he was younger, when Eddie had finally come out of his room and let Wayne comfort him over the bullying heâd faced and the nasty things the other children had said about him, about the family he came from.
Eddie cried and he didnât care his friends were most likely watching him, he couldnât hold it together anymore. Not when there was a chance he could lose his son. Not when he could lose you.
âI canât do it on my own,â he sobbed out against Wayneâs shoulder. How was he supposed to care for Penny without you? His family wouldnât be complete, itâd be fractured, it would be broken. And ifâit made him sick to know it was only a possibility and not a certaintyâhe took his son home, how was he supposed to raise him without you? What would he tell them? His son would be too young to remember, but Penny would. Sheâd miss you so much, heâd miss you so much. âI canât, Wayne! I need her! She canât leave me, I need her!â
The statement triggered a worrisome thought process, what if you did leave him? When was the last time he said he loved you? You knew it, right? You had to know, he told you all the time but no matter how hard he tried to recall it, he couldnât remember the last time heâd said he loved you and it made him sob harder.
Wayneâs arms tightened around him, eyes clenching shut at the agony his boy was feeling. He was hurting too, heâd been in this position before. Heâd lost her. Wayne couldnât let Eddie believe heâd lose you, too. Couldnât let him think heâd ever have to raise his family alone.
âShe ainât going nowhere,â he forced out, throat thick with emotion. He was trying to believe it just as much as he hoped Eddie would. âItâs gonna be okay. Sheâs gonna be okay. They both are.â
Wayne held him until Eddie stopped shaking and his sobs had subsided. Even then, he hadnât wanted to let him go, wanted to protect him. But Eddie had his own kid to protect.
He wiped at his face, taking a couple of shaky breaths. He wasn't okay, far from, but his broken heart was aching for someone he knew would manage to hold the pieces together without even trying, simply by existing.Â
He gave Wayne a brief, grateful smile that didnât meet his eyes and walked over to Barb, his daughter curled up in her arms. He obviously hadnât told Penny what was going on, as far as she knew, they had just been going to the hospital because her baby brother had been born.
Her excitement quickly turned to exhaustion while her dad had been in the delivery room with her mom and sheâd stopped running around to sleep in her grandpaâs lap. Sheâd been knocked out while Eddie was catatonic and had evidently slept through his hysterics, having been passed back to Barb when Wayne got up to comfort Eddie.
He was relieved she hadnât seen him like that.
It was selfish of him, but Eddie woke her up, pulling her out of Barbâs arms and into his own.
She stirred, raising her head briefly to look at Eddie with sleep heavy eyes, squinting before she nuzzled her head into the crook of his neck. Then, as if she remembered the reason for their hospital visit, she pulled away, an arm lazily resting over his shoulder.
âDaddy?â She asked through a yawn, lips stretching into a plump âoâ before she smacked them together.Â
âHi, baby,â he whispered, pressing a kiss to her crown and nuzzling his face into her curls, the pleasant smell of her sweet strawberry scented shampoo filling his nostrils. Her scent was comforting.Â
 âGanpa says the stoke came.â
Stork. While Penny knew her baby brother was growing in her mommyâs belly, she also simultaneously believed a stork would be dropping him off, prompted by a number of childrensâ books and cartoons.Â
Eddie had tried asking her about her logic once and sheâd made him feel thoroughly stupid for not understanding.
 âYeah, it did.â
Penny shook her head, something Eddie noticed she did when she was trying to wake up. You did the same thing, shaking your head whenever you were nodding off.Â
 His heart clenched.
âI see my baby brudder now?â
For a moment, Eddie struggled to come up with a reply. He didnât want to tell her the full truth, she was still just a baby herself. He didnât want to lie to her, either, but he needed to protect her.
 âSoon, sweet pea.âÂ
She seemed satisfied with that answer, curling up against his chest as he moved back to sit in the chair heâd been occupying before Dr. Houseman called on him. She quickly made herself comfy in his lap, little fingers pulling at the blue material of the scrub top he still wore. Â
 âKnow what, daddy?â
Eddie hummed, stroking his hand through her soft curls, letting them wrap around his finger tips and twisting the ends. They were still short, not long or heavy enough to be weighed down so it still looked like she had the Annie hairdo. She was so adorable, it drove him crazy.
 âHe looks like a âtato.â
Eddie stilled, brows furrowing down at her in confusion.Â
 âWhat?â
âHe looks like a potato,â she repeated, matter of factly, âGanpa says.â
Eddieâs eyes darted over to Wayne in the seat next to him.Â
âShe wanted a description. You try cominâ up with somethinâ.â Wayne had only gotten a brief look at the baby, heâd been almost unnaturally pale and covered in something that looked chalky and pasty. Reminded him of how potatoes look after being washed and air dried so it was the first thing that came to mind.
Eddie highly doubted a potato was tucked into an incubator in the NICU.
âI donât think he looks like a potato, sweet pea.â
âNo,â Is all she said, resting her head against his chest and effectively smashing the curls heâd been messing with there. She wasnât agreeing with him and Eddie knew it. She meant no, youâre wrong.
He snorted, blinking harshly at how sore his swollen eyelids were.Â
 âAlright, potato he is.â
Penny didnât know it and maybe in the future Eddie would tell her, she was getting him through this. His anxiety and panic had not left him, but it was easier to focus on a little light when it was curled up in his lap, telling him all about her baby brother she had yet to meet, with certainty they soon would.

Summary: . . . After your eventful labor and delivery, you and Eddie can only wait to see what fate holds for your newborn son as you two finally decide on a name. warnings: angst, a whole lot of angst, near death experience, difficult pregnancy, early labor, preterm birth, talk of loss of infants, birth defects, happy ending.
a/n: we have finally reached the rainbow at the end of the storm, my friends. wrapping this up feels so bittersweet, i'm going to miss all the interactions! i don't think i've gotten to talk to this many people here before and i hope it doesn't stop after part three. from the bottom of my heart, thank you. and a HUGE thank you to my partner in crime, @kitmon, for beta-ing this (all three parts) bad boy for me. while Wayne's World is finally over, i'm excited to continue writing for this little family. on to the next thing! word count is 4kish. happy reading! and for the people mad about the long post, sorry, had the 'keep reading' tab on but it kept fucking with the format and eating chunks of it. you're gonna have to scroll. let me know what you think? âĄĚ

While Eddie was out like a light, your doctor had also dropped in for a visit to inform you youâd be staying at the hospital for at least another day, which you werenât too excited about. You were prescribed medication to take during your stay and so long as you felt good, you were allowed to roam about, meaning you could visit your son.Â
Wayne had also dropped by, with a bag heâd packed full of Eddieâs clothes and things he thought he would need. He hadnât wanted to wake Eddie up, either. After making sure you were okay, he ended up taking Penny home with him. Youâd debated on letting her stay, but you figured Eddie would be vehement on staying with you and sheâd want to play with her toys soon. Wayne had promised to bring her back for visits.
Then it was just you and your sleeping husband. Eddie slept through the morning, past the afternoon, and into the evening. You were just about to run out of patienceâeager to see your babyâwhen he finally woke up.
âWhaâ happen?â He rasped out, voice groggy and eyes squinted almost shut as he stretched, letting out an inhuman grunt.Â
âGood morning, Sleeping Beauty,â you glanced at the clock on the wall, âor goodnight, I guess.â
âNight?â He followed your gaze, eyes shooting wide open when he realized how late heâd slept. âOh, shit. Itâs seven.âÂ
âIâm aware,â you were entirely amused, âYour breakfast, lunch, and dinner are on the counter.â You pointed over to the counter and cabinets lining the wall.
Eddie was starving, he tossed the blanket aside to get up and made quick work of all of his meals, to your surprise.Â
Watching Eddie eat was always so entertaining. He ate so chaotically, messy like a gremlin. And not just when he was starving.Â
âWhereâs Pen?â He asked through a mouthful of food.Â
âWith Wayne and Maude. He stopped by and dropped off some things for you.â You pointed this time to the duffel bag resting near his makeshift pullout bed.Â
The burger youâd got him for lunch was clenched in his teeth, the wrapper around it preventing its contents from falling out, as he rifled through it, pulling out a clean shirt, a pair of sweats and some boxers.
âWhy didnât you wake me?â He asked, again with a mouthful of food as he unbuckled his pants, pushing them down his legs.Â
You watched as he struggled to get his feet out of them without using his hands, aggressively shaking them off his right ankle. He cursed under his breath once they were off and you couldnât help but elate in the fact your husband was still a dork.
âYou were tired, snoring up a stormâââ
 ââI donât snore.â
ââAnd looking like you were in a coma.â
Eddie snorted as he devoured the rest of his burger before he was able to go put on the clean boxers (youâd made sure to lean forward so you could get your eyeful) and yank on the sweats. Then he pulled his shirt off and you responded by clapping your hands appreciatively.
âNow, give me a little twirl,â you swirled your finger downward, with a smirk and Eddie laughed as he threw the shirt at you.
âKnock it off, six week waiting period still applies to you so youâd better not tempt me.â
You whistled as you pulled his shirt off your head, holding it to your chest, âYou might have had the dinner but I definitely got the show.â
âYouâre incorrigible,â but he was still grinning as he yanked the clean shirt over his head.Â
You waited until he was comfortable, with his food, on the pull out before you informed him, âMy doctor came by, too. Said Iâm stuck here for another freaking day.â
Eddie pulled the fry heâd been about to eat away from his mouth so he could tease you with a pout. He was actually glad, youâd be surrounded by medical professionals so if for some reason something happened, theyâd be able to take care of you. Plus, heâd be by your side every day until then. This was his last day off, but heâd call Norm in the morning and let him know heâd have to take the next couple of days off. Heâd saved up more than enough paid time off at the shop, something heâd chosen this particular one to work at for offering.Â
Of course, when heâd gotten the gig as a teenager, heâd only been concerned about using that time to try out a new strain or micro dose.Â
You rolled your eyes and slumped back into your bed, âJerk. She also said I could move around. After you finish eating, will you take me to go see him?â
Fuck, Eddie would take you right now. He was about to set his tray aside when you hissed.Â
 âEat.â
He held his hands up in defeat, but finished off his food a little faster.Â
While he finished eating, youâd gotten out of bed (yes, he almost had a heart attack and you had to threaten him to keep him from hovering) to freshen up. By the time you were done, so was Eddie.
Youâd dug around his bag until you found one of your favorite shirts of his and put it on, under the stupid hospital gown, along with a pair of his sweats.
And you hadnât wanted to, like really, really didnât want to, but you allowed him to push you to the NICU in a wheelchair. It was the only way you were allowed to leave your room. Why didnât you want to? Because Eddie insisted it was a game, full on running to propel the wheelchair, even spinning you around in it, when he wasnât pretending to crash into things. It was fun, but you were sure the hospital staff didnât appreciate it.
When you finally got to the NICU and the nurse placed your baby in your arms, you knew everything youâd been through was worth it. Every single second you got with him was precious and worth the possible sorrow that may follow.Â
âHe does look like Penny,â you agreed, lifting him up to press a kiss to his forehead. He was in better looking condition than you recalled, not pasty or almost blue, and breathing. You remembered the shock of fear that had shot up your spine when he hadnât been after youâd pushed him out.
He was small, smaller than Penny had been for obvious reasons, and while it made you sad that you hadnât been able to keep him in you to develop more, you were still happy to have him.
âAlthough, I think their noses are different,â you mused and gently stroked your finger over the small tip of his nose, tubeless since heâd been removed from his incubator to be placed in your arms. He scrunched it up at the contact, and you were delighted with his response, âheâs got yourâs, Eddie.â
âYou think so?â Eddie was taken with that nose scrunch, absolutely entranced. Heâd seen you do it in the wee hours of that very morning.
âOh, yeah. Heâs perfect. I wonder whose eyes he has.â Selfishly, you hoped a pair of big, brown baby cow eyes, like his fatherâs and sisterâs, were under the eye cover.
âYou can take it off,â The nurse hovering nearby informed you, he was handling another baby but heâd heard your comment, âheâs done with his phototherapy. The lighting in here isnât harsh either, so heâll be just fine.â
He stopped what he was doing to hand you a couple of wipes, âJust moisten the edges and it will come right off.â
You did as instructed, Eddie hovering over you in anticipation. Once the edges were saturated with the warm wipe, you carefully peeled the eye mask away, heart squeezing as your baby boy blinked them open. Well, that was a stretch, he blinked them into a squint.
He glared up at you like that for a few more moments, before his blinking became rapid and then they were finally open, forehead scrunched up in curiosity as he stared, little mouth just barely parted.Â
âHi,â you giggled out, absolutely ecstatic to see a pair of familiar dark eyes peering up at you.Â
âGuess that answers that.â Eddieâs smile was soft as he watched you press another kiss to his head, your fingertips mingling with the fluff on his head. He couldnât help but notice how enthralled his son looked with you, little fists curled near his face.
âYou are so perfect,â you cooed down at him, finger stroking his cheek, he blinked at the contact, gave your hand some serious side eye for surprising him then returned his awed stare to your face. âI love you so much, my little grump. Youâre gonna be okay, yeah? âCause youâre just like your daddy, arenât you? Gonna make it out even when youâre dealt the shorthand.âÂ
Was Eddie Munson about to cry again? Yes.
âPerfect, perfect, perfect,â You enunciated each one word with a kiss to his head, âWe still have to name him.â
The morbid image of a potential name for his son, etched into stone came to the forefront of his man and Eddie felt a stabbing pang in his chest as he forced the image away.
âYou know, I technically chose Pennyâs,â you drawled, craning your head to look up at him, âI think itâs only fair you name him. Since you wonât let me name him Eddie Jr.â
Eddie stared back at you, gaze intense before it shifted down to the little bundle in your arms, at the face peeking out from the blankets.
He hadnât wanted to name his baby after him, wanted him to be more than just a namesake. With Penny, well, her name meant something to him. Unconditional love.Â
It didnât actually translate to that, but it had belonged to the one person in his lifeâother than youâwho showed him affection, emotion.Â
The babyâs eyes moved away from your face, catching Eddieâs stare and something about it prompted a thought, a fact really.Â
Eddie was wrong. He was so, so wrong in his thought process. The weight of the realization almost had his knees buckling as he stared back at that little face.
For the first time, Eddie thought of his sonâs name. Etched in stone or not, it was the only one worthy of him.
Youâd let the nurse know and he retrieved your son's birth certificate for you. You loved the name so much and since Eddie had been the one to decide on it, you insisted he write it on his birth certificate as well. It had to be the neatest thing Eddie had ever written.
It hadnât been easy to let the nurse take your baby back, away from you and you had teared up, afraid it would be the last time youâd see him.
Eddie had been upset too, in the last few moments you were allowed with him, heâd let his little guy hold onto his finger and reminded him of their earlier talk. He had to make it through tonight, so he could go home with them. After a few parting kisses, tears and reaffirming your love to him, he was whisked away to his incubator and you and Eddie made the sullen trip back to your room.Â
He held you in your bed while you both cried.Â
 And cried.
 And cried.
Eventually, the two of you fell asleep, the sheer emotional exhaustion too much for either of you.Â
When you woke up, it was to sunlight streaming through the cracks in the curtains and the nurse taking your vitals. Eddie was still lightly snoring into the side of your head and just as the nurse finished, both Dr. Eisenberg and Dr. Houseman entered your room.
âGood morning!â Dr. Eisenberg chirped. Dr. Houseman silently made herself comfortable leaning against the counter.
âMorning,â came your groggy reply as you shook Eddie awake. He peaked an eye open to glare at you but the moment he caught sight of both doctors, he snapped awake.
âSorry to disturb you two, we just figured youâd want to hear the news. Mrs. Munson, although I know you must love your hospital bed, todayâs looking like your last day here. Which means I want to hear about you doing lots of walking today. Iâm gonna check on you again tomorrow, but if all is well, youâll be discharged then.â
 Halle-freaking-lujah.Â
Dr. Eisenberg stepped back, nudging Dr. Housemanâs shoulder enthusiastically to take her place.
âI believe this is the first time weâve met, Mrs. Munson,â she regarded you with kind eyes before acknowledging Eddie, âMr. Munson. Nice to see youâve gotten some rest.â
Eddie tried not to feel personally attacked.
âI come bearing news of your son. He made it through the night, with no issues. Heâs out of phototherapy, responding well to feedingsâthatâs very importantâand while his breathing is fast, itâs also a good sign. It doesnât leave him breathless, so it may just be his excitement at being in the outside world and getting to use his lungs. He doesnât tire more than would be normal for a newborn, either. Weâre gonna keep him a little longer, let him develop a little more and ensure the hole starts to heal up, but I give it no more than two weeks before he goes home.â
The amount of weight lifted off both your shoulders and Eddieâs was almost disorientating. Your baby made it. Youâd get to take him home! You wanted to cry, jump around, do backflips, but you settled for leaning into Eddie, who was blinking an awful lot.
âAlright, I think we served our purpose. Weâll let the two of you have some peace.â They both gave you grins as they made their way out of the room, though Dr. Eisenberg stopped, effectively halting Dr. Houseman as well, âBy the way, LOVE the name you gave him. Really fits the little guy.â
Dr. Houseman nodded in agreement before she was ushering Eisenberg out of the room.
You held each other again as you cried, this time tears of joy and relief.
Wayne stopped by again, this time with Penny and a bag of necessities meant for you (packed with care by Maude because Wayne was too embarrassed to go through your drawers). Sheâd begged Eddie, literally wrapped herself around one of his legs until he agreed to take her to see baby brother. He hadnât wanted to, would much rather have them meet at the trailer when the two of you could finally bring him home and not when he was still in an incubator, patched up to machines, but he relented.
Wayne kept you company while he took her to see the baby. She hadnât asked any questions about the babies, only stating the stork must be getting ready to take them to their mommies and daddies because they were in boxes.Â
When heâd pointed out her brother, she couldnât look away, placing both hands on the glass as well as her forehead to stare at him.Â
 âMy little baby potatoes.â
 âHeâs notâalright, sweet pea.â
âI getta keep him, huh, daddy?â
âYeah, you get to keep him.â Eddie found himself blinking away tears, comforted to know he wasnât lying to her, didnât have to be obtuse to avoid telling her the truth anymore.Â
âOkie dokie, les take âem home.â
Eddie chuckled and pulled her a little ways from the glass to press a kiss to her cheek, âHe has to stay here for a few more days, but heâs gonna come home.â
 âPomise?â
 âI promise.â
She eyed him suspiciously, âYou wonât fuwwet âem?â
âForget,â Eddie corrected but Penny didnât amend the word like she would normally do when reminded of the proper pronunciation. She still had a little difficulty with her ârâs so if a word had the letter in it and she said it right the first time, great, if she didnât, she wouldnât be fixing it, âAnd that was one time, sweet pea, I came back for you like a minute later.â
Penny maintained an impressive, nonstop commentary about all the things she was going to teach her baby brother to do during the walk back to your hospital room. At some point, sheâd asked Eddie to swing her the rest of the way, which he scoffed at because that would make him look ridiculous to the staff.
Needless to say, by the time they got back, Eddie was sure the staff would be making fun of him.
Wayne hadnât asked to see the baby, he was content knowing the little fella would be coming home with you. He still had that image of him in the truck stuck in his head, and heâd rather replace it with a baby in a car seat instead of an incubator. He and Penny stayed a while. She took your doctorâs walking orders (that Eddie foolishly mentioned in front of her) seriously and demanded you walk back and forth around the room with her. It was no problem until it just got annoying but you entertained her anyways.Â
Then all your friends had shown up, waiting strategic intervals of time to slip into your room as small groups so the nurses wouldnât notice. Theyâd brought tons of gifts and Eddie had to sneak them to the NICU entrance, a few at a time, so they could see your baby through the glass.
After what a c-section was had been explained to the boys, Dustinâs respect for you skyrocketed, which you hadnât thought would be possible considering his high opinion of you in the first place, and Lucas thought you had to be some kind of superhuman to survive that, he was amazed. Poor Will and Robin looked like they wanted to throw up when Steveâs girlfriend explained how some of your insides had been briefly removed to get to the baby.
It had been Nancy and Jonathan who got the group out of the hospital, and just in time. Your main nurse had come to check on you with all the suspicious hallway activity. Wayne and Penny left when visiting hours were over and you convinced Eddie to sleep on the bed with you, you always fell asleep fast when you got to cuddle up to him and you needed the night to pass already so you could get discharged.Â
You were impatient the next morning, Eddie watched on in amusement as you got ready, fluttering about the room until you finally slipped into a shirt and some comfortable pants with a high waistline (nothing was pressing into your scar until that bad boy was healed), then put your hospital gown over them and climbed into bed to disguise your getaway outfit.Â
Your plan was of course foiled when Dr. Eisenberg arrived and had you walk across the room a couple of times. Sheâd been amused with your expectations, but stuck to her promise and a nurse was wheeling you out after you were discharged.
Wayne, Penny and Maude greeted you when you arrived home, and while you were pleased to be in your own clothes and trailer, you wanted your baby with you.Â
âWhat happened to the spot?â Youâd asked Wayne, at some point while Maude and Penny were showing Eddie a new dress Maude had made for her.
You were referring to the stain you were sure your water breaking had leftâunfortunately, rather bloody as well.Â
âMaude got rid of it. Took âer a couple âa days but she managed to scrub it out, âs why she couldnât come see you, reckon she figured you wouldnât wanna see it.â
The widow from a couple of trailers awayâand Wayneâs lady loveâwas shy as hell, but you were positive you loved her.Â
You and Eddie made sure to visit your son as often as possible. While Eddie worked, you spent most of your mornings and afternoons at the hospital, learning from the nurses about his improving condition and how to care for him. Youâd learned he was fed a couple of special formulas, though they still encouraged you to breastfeed. On day seven of his hospital stay, you got to nurse him for the first time.Â
It was difficult, he wouldnât latch properly no matter how hard you or the lactation consultant tried at first. It took him a while to get the hang of it, and it had been mildly uncomfortable for you, but eventually he did start latching. Day eight was spent encouraging him to latch each time. You knew youâd have to feed him those special formulas, but that was the extent of sharing him with a bottle you were willing to go. It was 50/50, and theyâd informed you as soon as he caught up in development, and started gaining weight, the need for the formulas would lessen and you wouldnât have to share him.
 GOOD.
On day nine, you and Eddie got to bring him home. It hadnât been completely planned, Dr. Houseman had suggested it the day prior, hadnât guaranteed it and hadnât been expecting you to have a carseat and anything else you might need for the ride home, but when she mentioned that he was good to goâthough heâd have to be seen regularly to ensure his heart was in healthy condition and healingâEddie bolted to retrieve the car seat heâd had waiting for his little dude and came just about running back.
âDonât look so sour, baby,â He cooed as he tucked his little baby in and secured the harness around him. His sonâs face was scrunched up, glaring at Eddie while he buckled him in. Clearly, he wasnât a fan of the car seat, but he changed his tune when Eddie gently squished his cheeks between his thumb and index finger, the baby immediately relaxed, eyes wide as he stared up at his daddy. Then Eddie was tucking a blanket around him, and lowering the visor to protect him from the cold air.
It was wonderfully symbolic how peaceful the drive home from the hospital with your son had been compared to how chaotic the drive to the hospital, with him, had been.Â
Wayne, Penny and Maude were waiting for you again. Penny practically attacked Eddieâs legs as soon as he made it through the door with the car seat.Â
âWhoa, sweet pea! Careful, daddy doesnât want to step on you.â
 âI wanna see âem!â
âYou will,â You promised as you shut the door behind you. Wayne and Maude were perched on the couch as Eddie placed the car seat down and squatted so he could carefully take the baby out of it. Pennyâs energy seemed to disappear, she was stock still, watching as Eddie lifted the visor, removed the blanket, unbuckled the baby and finally pulled him out.Â
Maudeâs reaction was instant, sounds of adoration slipping past her lips as the baby scrunched his back while Eddie lifted him, tiny arms pulling up near his head.Â
Wayne laughed, relieved to see the baby looked nothing like he had when heâd first seen him. In fact, if he didnât know better heâd think Eddie brought home the wrong one.Â
 âYou wanna hold him?â
âBring âim âere.â Wayne held his hands out and Eddie carefully placed his newborn son in them.
âWell, âyer in better shape, ainât you?â He commented down at the little guy. As soon as those eyes were on him, he knew there had been no baby mix up. He was Eddieâs kid.
ââShoot, another one with âyer eyes?â Wayne chuckled and Eddieâs chest puffed with pride. His next joke was directed towards you, âHeâs lookinâ like Penny did when she was a baby, you sure you ainât a copy machine?â
âNot anymore,â You scoffed, smiling at the sight as you leaned into Eddieâs side. He slipped an arm around your shoulders, hand moving to the side of your head as he pulled you even closer to kiss.
âHeâs a cute lilâ fella. Whatâs his name?â
Eddie smirked against the top of your head before he answered him, âWayne.â
âHmn?â Then, without looking up from that little face, Wayne figured Eddie hadnât heard him and was asking him to repeat himself. ââSaid whatâs his name?â
âI heard you, his name is Wayne.â
Wayne looked up at the two of you then, eyes wide and unbelieving.
 âWhaâ?â
âHis full name is Wayne Edward Munson,â you had to make sure they knew Eddie compromised and was willing to allow you to use his name as his sonâs middle name, the smile on your face was smug. âWayne.â
Wayne cleared his throat, tongue darting out to wet his dry lips.Â
ââS reallyâŚâ He trailed off, throat thick as he swallowed, head nodding a couple of times.Â
âI didnât always imagine myself as a family man growing up,â Eddie confessed, âbut when I did, I imagined having these crazy, weirdo kids who Iâd love and who would love me back. Teach them to play the guitar, how to appreciate good music, play Dungeons and Dragons with. Was already afraid Iâd mess up, though. And theyâd stop loving me.
âWhen we had Penny and she,â Eddie pressed another kiss to your head, âsuggested we name her after my mom, I thought it was perfect. Naming the baby I was afraid would one day stop loving me after someone who never did was perfect to me. I was struggling real hard on names for him, didnât think Edward was worthy of him. Then he looked at me. In that moment, all I could think about was how much I loved him. I couldn't help but wonder if that was how you felt when you saw me.â
Eddie wasnât the insecure kid he used to beâwell, not as insecure. Heâd been unsure of it at the start of his stay with Wayne, the older Munson was never very vocal with his emotions, though he had on occasion told Eddie he loved him. It wasnât a machismo thing, Eddie was sure Wayne just didnât know how to express emotions. It was how heâd been raised. Regardless, Eddie knew Wayne loved him.Â
Loved him when he was a baby, born from the woman he loved and not even his own son. Loved him when he saw him sporadically throughout his early life. Loved him enough to try and fight to keep him when his mom died, though the law gave him back to his dad. Loved him when a social worker showed up on his doorstep with him in tow, a broken shell of a boy. Loved him in those few awkward first interactions as they learned how to be around each other again. Loved him when he started getting in trouble, when police officers started escorting him home, when heâd had to pick him up from the police station, when he knew he was selling things and partaking in a business Wayne didnât particularly approve of, loved him through it all. By blood, he might have been an uncle. By all other means, that man was his father. And his name was the only name worthy of his son. No rock star could compete.Â
âSo, we named him after the other person in my life who never stopped loving me.â
Eddie could see the shine on Wayneâs eyes as his mouth set in a firm line.Â
Finally, Wayne managed to rasp out, ââYeâah, youâre right. Not for one seconâ.â
Not for once second had he stopped loving his boy.Â
Wayne looked down at little Wayne, whose stare was no longer scrutinizing, âYou got âyerself a good pair âa parents. âCouldnâta asked to be born in a better family.â
âUhm, âscuse me, I fuwwot his name. Whatâs he called?â
âWayne, baby.â Eddie chuckled and Penny leaned against Maudeâs legs, craning forward to get a good look at her brother.
âWaynie. I like it! Can I put âem in my stoller now?â
 âNo, Penny.â
After the flood of emotions that your living room became that morning, Wayne and Maude had stuck around for a couple of hours before they said goodbye to Penny and baby Wayne and made their way home. So, about a three minute walk, tops.
You settled onto the couch, next to Eddie who had Penny curled on his lap, with baby Wayne, ready to nurse him as Eddie searched for something to watch. Youâd just gotten Wayne to latch when Eddie made a pleased sound and you glanced up to find out what had amused him.
On the tv was an episode of Saturday Night Live, specifically the beginnings of one of Mike Myersâs most popular sketches as Eddieâs favorite character from the show.Â
âJust in time,â At the mention of his sonâs name on screen, Eddie glanced down at the baby attached to your boob, whose gaze flickered to the side to meet his as if he was aware of gaining his dadâs attention.Â
The cornerâs of Eddieâs lips twitched as his big eyes stared at him, âYeah, yeah. I know. Welcome to Wayneâs World.â
A masterpiece !

Y/n and Eddie were together for years. Theyâd graduated, moved in together, gotten jobs, and started a nest egg, also known as the rainy day fund.
They had meticulously planned their life together in order to avoid ending up like their own parents who seemed to fuck up at every turn, not to mention while having kids.
Which is exactly why they decided they wouldnât have any. It wasnât a hard decision, neither of them finding themselves to be baby people and hoped to give each other all of the time and attention they hadnât received in their upbringings, wishing to travel and live a nomadic life.
Though they didnât end up traveling right away, they knew they had time for it. Theyâd come a long way from the inseparable couple skipping class to smoke and makeout all those years ago; Eddie landed a job in a nice garage making a steady rate, while Y/n worked as a waitress at a grill downtown. Theyâd been diligent in putting money back for a rainy day or âsomething really really coolâ as Eddie would say.
And did the rainy day come.
Literally.
One rainy morning in April, Y/n paced nervously in the trailer, a developing pregnancy test in the other room on the bathroom counter. âHow fucking long is this supposed to take?â She grumbled to herself, picking up the timer for the thousandth time as it went off. She yelped and fumbled with the knob trying to silence the ringing, tossing it onto the couch as she sprinted into the bathroom.
Her heart hammered as she picked up the test, the two lines reading positive making it cease altogether. âHoly fucking hell.â She breathed, the newly familiar nausea twisting in her stomach and sent to the toilet with a lurch.
Y/n spent the rest of the day hoping to figure out how to tell Eddie what was going on. Sheâd been ignoring the signs for a month, too afraid to face the music and finally put her mind to rest. The tender breasts, the constant stomach ache, dizziness, and of course the missed period. Eddie had asked her if sheâd had her monthly visitor, to which she panicked and said âyes.â
She hated herself for lying, but the thought hadnât occurred to her that her period was late until he asked. Truth be told she never really paid attention to her cycle before and this time it bit her in the ass.
Y/n worried about how Eddie would react; knowing he didnât have any plans on being a father and how heâd feel about her lying about such a heavy topic. Part of her feared heâd be upset with her, maybe even enough to leave her.
She debated for a while between procrastinating and ripping the bandaid off, not knowing which way would be easier. If Eddie loved her as much as he showed he did, then this should be easy.
She decided to cook him his favorite meal to start, complete with a dessert that was his own grandmaâs recipe. Grandma Edna was one of Eddieâs favorite people, her cookie brownies being his favorite because âItâs like Dr. Frankenstein decided to combine two desserts. Itâs ingenious, the woman is a God.â She chuckled at the thought while she poured the oil in the pot to fry the chicken.
As the oil heated up, an intense and foul aroma permeated the trailer that sent her stomach churning and her head spinning. Y/n held her t-shirt over her nose to fend off the smell thatâs never bothered her before as she checked the coloring of the food and put it back in the oil for longer.
Y/n slumped against the opposite counter, the window over the sink shoved open as wide as it would go. She took deep cleansing breaths and did her best to push through, telling herself she just needed to eat something though nothing sounded safe enough.
At 6:00, like every evening, Eddie came home from work in his grease spotted uniform, calling âHoney, Iâm home!â as he entered.
He quickly dropped his lunchbox on the counter with his keys and undid the buttons of his blue garage jumpsuit to strip it off, leaving him in his boxers and a tank top.
âAw, youâre making fried chicken?! AND mashed potatoes?â His eyes bugged as he struggled to kick the fabric off his foot, carrying the rumple of stains to his lady, planting a kiss on her cheek and wrapping her in his arms the best he could without getting her dirty.
Eddie took note of the gradual change over the last month or so, how short she had become in conversation, how she had made excuses about not feeling good, running to the toilet all hours of the day; he really started to worry about her and her mental health, maybe even if her feelings towards him were the problem.
He decided to keep his cool, making sure he was doing his duty by her to give her comfort and space when needed, and only assuming sheâs upset with him when sheâs explicitly told him so.
He figured today was another hard day, her glum and sullen look on her face evident of her discomfort. âCould you help me get these out? I heard coke and dish soap might help.â He said, showing her the spots in question before tossing it towards the laundry room with an easy smile on his lips, one he probably wasnât even aware of it was so common with her. âUh, yeah, of course. Iâll give it my best shot.â She nodded and stirred the fluffy mash on the stove.
âKnew I could count on you.â He said before kissing her cheek on his way past, going to the bathroom to start the shower and let the water heat up. Y/n moved the chicken from the boiling oil to the plate she had prepared for them to rest, turning off the stove and thanking the powers that be she made it through without puking or burning anything.
âWhatâs you do today? Did you enjoy your day off? Are you feeling any better?â Eddie asked, her stomach lurching in response. Her feet moved before she could give any warning that sheâd come barreling through the four foot by four foot bathroom they shared to puke in the toilet.
âBaby??â He questioned as she heaved the remnants of the saltines she managed to scarf down during the day. She wiped her mouth and tried to brace herself against the toilet to stand though she wobbled.
âHey, hey, I gotcha, donât worry.â Eddie cooed, wrapping his arms gently around her middle and pulling her to sit with her back up against him.
She leaned back against his warm chest, the linoleum floor cold on her legs. The shower head rained hot water, the steam started to fill the top of the room, and the pitter patter of the water drops thudded against the thick shower curtain in a soothing rhythm as he held her close.
âYou need to go to the doctor and figure out whatâs wrong with you, Iâm done waiting, I canât do it anymore.â He whispered, his brow crinkled in worry.
Y/n sighed, a sob escaping her lips as she did. Tears began to roll down her cheeks while she tried to gain composure, though it didnât work. Instead she pressed a hand to her mouth and let the sobs roll over her body.
âHey, hey, hey, whatâs wrong?â He asked as she turned her face into his chest, her hot tears falling against him as a realization hit, âOh! Is it your period again? Already?? Are you hurting? I can get you some midolââ He tried to stand, to go into the kitchen and grab some pain medication to make it all go away when she reached out to hold his leg with her whole body, another sob escaping her.
âItâs not that, Eddie. I-I donât wanna tell youâI do! I do wanna tell you, but Iâm scared. Iâm scared youâre gonna be so upset.â She heaved, keeping her hold on his leg as he looked down at her, the confusion and alarm evident in his eyes.
Why did she feel so guilty? What had she kept from him? Had she cheated on him? Was that why she was throwing up for a month?
âY/n, baby, youâre scaring me. Did something happen? Di-Did you make a mistake?â He said, trying his best to ask the questions flooding his mind without breaking down and crying at the mere thought of what they have being gone.
âI mean.. yeahâYeah I made a mistake... We made a mistake, actually.â She trailed off, looking at the small heaping trash bin by the toilet. Eddie blanched and sunk back to the floor with her, still unsure as to what she meant when she started digging through an abnormal amount of toilet paper on top of the trash.
Before he could ask her what she was doing, she turned to join him by the tub and handed him a closed pregnancy text box. Eddie looked at it and then to her and cocked his head. âOpen it.â She whispered, unable to meet his eyes.
Eddie popped the top open and dumped the two sticks onto the floor between them, flipping them over so he could see the result window with two bright pink lines. âWhat does that mean, Y/n?â He asked, his voice cracking when he reached just barely above a whisper.
Y/n took some shallow breaths as her body and face went numb with fear. âIâm so sorry, Eddie..â She mumbled, picking at her chipped black fingernail polish, still left over from the last time Eddie painted them for her.
âWhat do you mean youâre sorry?â He asked, his eyes filled with both horror and wonder. âWhat do you mean, whatâ I'm pregnantââ
âIs it mine?? Iâm asking if IâmâDid youâYâknow, I know shit happens, I know sometimes people hurt the people they love, sometimes mistakes happenââ He rambled in a panic, his eyes wide and a couple tears escaping from the corners.
Y/nâs jaw dropped, âEddie, of course it is! Thereâs nobody else it could possibly be, I havenât slept with anyone else in, what? Almost.. 6 years, now?â
She quickly counted the numbers on her fingers absentmindedly as Eddie threw his arms around her and laid her down on the floor, holding her to his chest as he breathed a sigh of relief. His heart started hammering for reasons completely different than before. He couldnât help the smile that refused to leave his lips, and the tears slipping from the corners of his eyes couldnât be helped.
âDid you really think Iâd cheat on you?â She asked with an almost quivering voice. Eddie shook his head vehemently, âNo, no, no, justâyouâve been.. weird for a few weeks now and I thought Iâd let you come to me since I was constantly asking what was on your mind, I figured if you were upset with me youâd tell me, you know? But then⌠you said something about a mistake, a-and the worst thing my mind could come up with with was you cheating but then the tests said youâre pregnant and-and you seemed so upset I couldnât help but thinkââ
âAw, honey, no.â Y/n cooed, her hand stroking Eddieâs cheek lovingly as she shook her head in earnest. Eddieâs cheeks shined with tears as he leaned his face into her soft hand. âI was upset because weâve always said we didnât want kids, Ed, we have plans! We canât live with a baby on the road, we canât see the world, thereâs barely even wheelchair access anywhere, how are we supposed to lug a baby and stroller around the House of Blues?? And I lied about my period and.. I was so scared youâd be angry. Maybe angry enough you wouldnât wannaââ
âY/n.â Eddie said sternly, taking her chin in his hand and bringing her eyes to his. âI know I said I donât want kids, I know this deviates from the plan, but Iâm not angry. Iâll take this over you cheating on me any day!â He tried to make her smile, which he did with little success.
âNothing could make me hate you, Y/n, youâre the best person I know and I somehow tricked you into falling in love with me. I wouldnât ever do anything to jeopardize that.â He tried again, being met with her real smile spreading wide across her face to his delight. âAnd if thereâs anyone I want to try to raise a kid with, itâs you⌠I really think we could do a good job togetherâand itâs not like weâre alone anymore! Weâll always have Wayne and the rest of our chosen family.. and I hope you know Iâd never leave our family.â
And when he said it, it became real.
Our family.
âOur family?â She whispered, like a safety blanket was draped around her shoulders to make everything feel safe and okay. âYeah, baby, you are my family, you always have been. And now weâre gonna be a real family, with a baby and everything!â He smiled and touched his nose to hers, gently cupping her cheeks in his hands and stroking her skin.
âI love you, Eddie.â She said in a whisper against his lips before kissing him deeply. âI love you too, baby. Forever and ever and the rest of time.â He declared as he flipped them over for her to sit on top of his lap this time. Their lips were warm and soft working against each other, the sweet taste of his saliva trickling into her mouth as they kissed. Eddie ended with a handful of kisses sprinkled across her face, their tears dry and smiles lingering.
âCâmon, mama, get in the shower with me and Iâll wash your hair.â He sat up and curled a lock of her hair around his finger, the offer earning him a forehead kiss.
âAlready calling me mama, huh?â She teased as she tried to stand without him, his hand coming to rest on her shoulder before she could. She shot him an inquisitive look as he stood, holding his hand out for her.
âWhat? I need to make sure my lady always has help, even more so now!â He pointed out as he checked the water temperature again
Y/n giggled at his protective instincts as he began undressing. âWe definitely gotta get out of here before Ozzy slash Axel comes.â He mentioned casually as he tossed his pants into the hall.
âOzzy slash Axel? And what if itâs a girl?â She asked incredulously.
âOzzyâs the girlâs name! You canât tell me it wouldnât be badass.â He said as he stripped off his tank top, revealing his pale torso as Y/n shamelessly ogled him, âWeâll see about that, daddy.â She teased, slipping off her shirt and shorts from the day.
Eddie chuckled at the nickname, âI donât think Iâll get used to that.â He scoffed.
âIs it different than you calling me mama?â She smarted with her arms crossed.
Eddie turned back to her with amused wide eyes, âUh, yeah. Itâs completely different now. Iâm not just your daddy anymore, Iâm someoneâs actual daddy now. Or at least I will be.â He glanced down at Y/nâs middle as she lifted her shirt.
She tried not to look at Eddie after she noticed her rounded lower stomach, something she assumed was just bloat until today. âI donât know if Iâll get used to that, either...â He chuckled, not hiding his gaze at her abdomen.
âEddie, Iâm like two seconds pregnant, quit looking at me like that.â She mumbled with pink cheeks as she rid herself her underwear and stepped under the water with his help.
âI know, but you canât tell me it doesnât already look different. You said itâs been more than a month now, right? Your bodyâs already building a home, isnât that amazing?â He asked as he joined her, kneeling in front of her naked body as he had a million times before, except this time his focus was slightly shifted north.
He held her hips in both hands, studying the front of her in a new way, turning her side to side as if he were inspecting her like she was the first of her kind. He couldnât help his smile or the gleam in his eye as he looked up at her. âYâknow when I met you I thought the idea of a nuclear family was hell?â He asked as he stood, looking down at her while he moved all of her hair behind her ears and shoulders.
Y/n shrugged, âI, mean, yeah, still is.â
He smiled and tilted her chin up, her hair meeting the stream of water as he did, getting her hair all nice and warm and wet for him. âYeah, well, as stubborn as I am, you were able to change that pretty quick.â He sighed, squeezing some soap into his palms. Y/n gasped softly, tilting her chin back down to meet his eye as he turned her by her shoulders to wash her hair.
âYeah, I know, so soft and gross, ew.â He joked, smirking when he saw her shoulders bouncing with a chuckle. âBut itâs true. Youâre justâyouâre so good.. at taking care of me, at being a person, at being a friend, youâre good. Great, even.. the best.â He whispered, massaging his fingers into her scalp and working the soap into a lather.
âTruth be told, Iâve been holding back on telling you because I knew you didnât want kids and I wanted to respect that. Cause either way, baby, Iâm happy with you, and Iâm not making you have any baby you donât wanna have.. so if this isnât something you want, that is okay with me, truly.â He stopped his movements and held his hands on her shoulders to speak next to her ear.
Y/n turned to him again, her eyes wrought with longing. âEddie, you have no idea how happy it makes me to hear you say that. But youâll be even more happy to know I want this. Through and through.â She nodded in finality, wrapping her arms around his shoulders as he brought her in for a tight hug.
âIâm gonna take such good care of you guys.â He mumbled into her shoulder, more to himself than to her.
After that, Eddie spent his spare time taking on odd jobs to make extra cash to add to the ârainy day fundâ which was quickly changed to âthe baby fundâ, while Y/n contributed half of her tips. The couple was satisfied with their growing chunk of money, the feeling of being real adults swelling their hearts with pride for themselves and one another.
Theyâd stay up late at night talking about the what ifs and the scenarios of late nights and early mornings and potty training and tying shoes.
Somewhere in there they got around to the deeper parts of their childhoods and dissected the uncomfortable and painful parts, figuring out where their parents went wrong and what theyâll do differently, some nights ending in an embrace and tears at the stories traded and relived.
One night, Eddie laid with his head on her chest, tracing shapes into the smooth skin of her hard and prominent bump as they watched Family Feud before bed. Like a ball rolling under a blanket, Eddie saw the skin of Y/nâs belly move as the baby punched or kicked a foot, sending their mother groaning and their father yelling.
âWhat the fuck!!â He exclaimed, jumping back in horror. Y/n laughed and held her stomach until the baby got comfortable. âTheyâre moving, thatâs all. You finally caught them in action, I told you theyâre strong! That felt like a fist or an elbow, Iâm not quite sure.â She said looking back down at her now lopsided belly from where the baby rolled over to another side.
âCome look.â She whispered to keep from disturbing the sleeping fetus. Eddie craned his neck over to see what she was looking at. âOh my god, babies are so weird.â He said with a smile and a gleam in his eye.
âShould I, like, push him back over?â He asked, resting his hand on the bulging side of the bump as she giggled profusely. âEddie, no! Theyâll move in a minute. Why do you think itâs a boy anyway??â She swatted his hand off her stomach as she took her turn laying on his chest to read the survey board on the tv.
âThat kid is too ornery to be a girl, trust me. The grief heâs giving you right now is classic Munson boy behavior, and Iâll go ahead and apologize for how down bad youâre about to be for his brown eyes.â He batted his lashes at her as she turned to look at him in disbelief.
âYouâre gonna eat those words, Munson, just you wait.
And when the rainy winter day came, Eddieâs words reigned true.
âItâs a boy!â The doctor announced. Y/nâs hair stuck to her face as she fought to catch her breath while the nurses prepared the baby to get his umbilical cord cut. âAlright, dad, just make a cut right here,â the doctor instructed as a nurse set their baby boy on his motherâs chest, Y/nâs body wracked with sobs as Eddie watched the scene happen around him and back to the scissors and clamps before him.
â âS not gonna hurt them is it?â He asked quietly. The doctor laughed lightly and shook his head, âNo, no, I assure you your wife and son will be just fine.â
âMy wife and sonâ
Eddie breathed a laugh, the color returning to his face after the last hour of Y/nâs labor had his soul close to leaving his body. He accepted the scissors and made a cautious snip, his eyes jerking over to the dark haired baby on his loves chest, relieved when he saw neither of them batted an eyelash.
The nurses took the baby for his measurements, announcing he was seven pounds and one ounce, nineteen inches long, born at 4:20 in the morning to which Eddie snickered as he held his girlâs hand and stroked her knuckles lovingly.
Eddie brushed the hair back from her forehead as the nurses cleaned the area and swaddled the baby, now clean from the bodily fluids he had spent his time growing in like a butterfly in a chrysalis.
âYou did so good, baby,â he pressed a kiss to her hand, his eyes feeling leaky now that he got to really talk to her for the first time since active labor started. âIâm so proud of you. You, like, hulked out there at the end. It was crazy! And seven pounds?? Thatâs literally a bowling ball, you know?â He rambled in amazement as the nurse handed Y/n a blue bundle.
âLemme look at that face,â he whispered, craning his head to get a look at the baby he waited to meet for so so long.
And there he was. Full little lips, his tongue poking out between them as he wriggled, his button nose wrinkling as he fussed, his face scrunched in frustration.
âC-Can I hold him? After you, of course, whenever youâre readyââ
âEddie?â
âYes?â
âIâm ready, here, take him.â She smiled, holding out the bundle, too tired to keep her arms up and eager to see the way he looked holding their baby they feared having. Eddie quickly accepted the baby from her arms, taking care to hold his neck and feeling startled at how light he felt in his arms.
âHoly shit.â He whispered, running his index finger down the center line of his forehead, his eyes opening for the first time to reveal shining dark eyes, almost black.
âWhat is it? He got six fingers or something??â Y/n asked in a panicked daze. Eddie chuckled without taking his eyes off his son, his eyes prickling with tears.
âNothingâhe, uh, he justâheâs the prettiest person I think Iâve ever seen.. and he has brown eyes, I think.â He said quietly, finally looking up at the mother of his child.
âLemme see!â She whispered excitedly. Eddie stepped over to the chair next to the bed as the nurses left.
The baby looked rather unimpressed between the two of them, their faces permanently etched in awe as they stared at his open eyes. âHeâs looking right through us.â Eddie whispered.
âHe canât even see us, yet.â Y/n giggled, tracing her baby sonâs face with her pointer finger, stopping to squish his cheek lightly. âItâs all blurry for him right now.â She mentioned, the babyâs eyes relaxing into the hospital lighting a little more and blinking away discomfort.
âSo, whatâs his name?â Eddie asked, pushing the front of his little hat off his head to stroke his thick curls that swirled against his scalp. Y/n hummed, sitting in silence until she looked over at their bag, his latest fantasy novel, just visible under a hoodie.
Eddie had been inseparable from the book every night before bed, sometimes reading the extra cool parts to Y/n, who loved to hear the adventures of the band of rogues that called themselves the Realm Riders.
âWhat about Ryder?â Y/n said.
Eddieâs ears perked at that, âRyder Wayne?â He asked with a growing smile. Y/n giggled, âWhat do you think?â She asked.
âI love it! It sounds like heâs a knight or-or-or a cowboy, or something!â Eddie nudged her arm with gentle excitement.
Her cheeks warmed with her smile, âThe noblest of his countrymen just like his daddââ
Eddie cut her off by pushing his lips onto hers, their first kiss shared as parents. âI love you.â
âI love you too, Eddie. Youâre gonna be such a good dad to him, you know that right?â Y/n whispered, their foreheads pressed together as the baby settled into a slumber. Eddie swallowed hard and nodded his head reverently.
âYouâre thoughtful and kind and loving and strong, you are going to set such a good example and-and weâre gonna give him such a happy home to grow up in. And heâs gonna know how much his parents love each other, and him, always, okay? Heâll have everything we didnât..â Y/n whispered.
Eddie smiled, the tears rolling down his cheeks at the overload of affirmation and praise. âI swear to it..â he mumbled, taking her hand and pressing it to his lips, â I-I never thought Iâd feel this way... I didnât think it was real.. yâknow, feeling like a real family. And now we are. Because of you.â He beamed at her with tears spilling over his eyes. âI hope you know I plan on marrying you the moment I can afford a ring to go on that precious little finger of yours.â He mumbled.
Y/nâs heart leapt, âYou mean you already wanna promote me from baby mama?â She sniffled through the joke, his goofy smile stretching across his face.
âAbsolutely. The best baby mama I have should share our last name.â Eddie remarked back, planting a kiss on her forehead. âUnless you want us to take your last name! I can do that. Iâm cool with not being a Munson anymore, it might be good for meââ
âNo, no, no, Eddie I wanna be the Munsons.. Weâll put it on a mailbox or something for the whole world to see, everyone in Hawkins will know weâre your family.â She smiled as his smile returned to his face again.
âMy family...â Eddie smiled and shook his head in quiet disbelief at the words coming from his mouth.
When they arrived home, their friends were crammed in the tin can of a trailer home with a blue banner held up by Robin and Uncle Wayne that read âWelcome Home, Baby Munson!â
From the outside of the door they could hear the scuffle and bickering of the friends trying to get in place quietly. Eddie held his loveâs arm to help her walk, his son in the baby carrier in his other. The two looked to each other and snickered, âLetâs give them a few more seconds, huh?â He asked, his soft stare flitting over her face.
She nodded, turning back to the door, the curtains jerking closed as she did so. âI think they know weâre here.â She whispered, nodding to the window as she eased forward to the wobbly porch steps.
Eddie held his hand up behind her back as she clutched the equally as trusting rail as she climbed. The door opened before she could turn the handle, the crowd shouting, âSurprise!â as they entered their home.
Y/n smiled, looking at Eddie as he greeted his family. Steve wrapped him up in a firm hug, quickly pulling away to kneel and peek at the fussy baby in the carrier. Dustin led the hoard of Hellfire members all chattering and asking wild questions:
âWas there a lot of blood?â âDid you watch?â âDid you cut the cord?â âDid they let you keep any?â âWhat is the baby?â âWhatâs its name?â âHow do you know they didnât switch it?â âDid you guys get matching bracelets?â âDoes this mean youâre married now?â
Eddie tried to keep up with the questions as they all flew around him, his eyes searching for his partner as they were separated in the chaos. He noticed Robin helping her to the bathroom when he spotted Wayne, a small smile on his lips as he nodded at Eddie to come to him; the same way heâd done the boyâs whole life.
Eddieâs legs began moving before he told Dustin heâd tell him the whole story later. The baby in the carrier grunted, ready to be held or irritated by the noise.
âWhy donât we Munson men take a minute, huh?â Wayne patted his boyâs shoulder fondly, Eddie nodding with quiet eagerness.
Eddie led his uncle to their bedroom, setting the baby carrier on the bed before pushing the visor back to reveal the sweetest set of brown eyes that resembled a baby Wayne once knew long ago.
âUncle Wayne,â Eddie started as he unbuckled the small seat belt from his sonâs delicate chest, his little hands coming up to rest in front of his face as he pouted. âIâd like you to meet your grandson, Ryder Wayne.â He finished as he adjusted his baby in his arms, the baby fully awake and blinking, his eyes Looking from Eddie to his grandpa.
Eddie finally looked back up at Wayne, who was having trouble keeping his breath steady. His eyes prickled with tears as he swallowed the hard lump in his throat and nodded.
âYou just really had to make a grown man cry, didnât you, Ed?â He asked as a couple tears slipped from the corner of his eye. âC-Can I hold âem?â He asked his nephew quietly. Eddieâs eyes lit up immediately as he nodded, handing the bundle over to his uncle. The two men sniffled in silence, their eyes unmoving from the baby between them.
âYâknow, over the years I had my worries; that youâd run off, or end up with the wrong folks, that youâd get discouraged and quit schoolâor worse⌠Your little ideas have given my heart quite the jump start since Iâve had you, kid, but this one.. well.. this one might just be the best scare youâve ever given me.â He chuckled as the tears ran more freely, looking over to his grown boy again to see matching tears rolling down his pale cheeks.
The two laughed and held each other close, admiring the sweet boy between them until Y/n opened the door quietly.
âHi, sorry to interruptââ
âNonsense! Get on in here, darlinâ, Iâs just meeting my grandson.â Wayne said with pride, beaming down at the boy in his arms. Y/n took her place under Eddieâs arm until the baby scrunched his face up in a cry.
âAww, there he goes.â Wayne chuckled easily before handing the baby to his mother.
âI bet itâs time for another bottle.â Y/n said in thought then looked at Eddie, who checked his watch before nodding at her.
âYeah, itâs been two hours, heâs a hungry little dude.â
âI guess itâs time to get out here, huh?â Y/n asked Ryder as if heâd have a response. The three of them reentered the living room, the party noticing almost immediately.
âSo it is a boy?! Max was just messing with us?!â Dustin asked as the boys looked amongst each other, Will dragging his palm down his face in annoyed amusement while Max and El snickered quietly.
Y/n and Eddie chuckled, the new father making up a bottle of formula while Y/n took a seat on the couch in between Robin and Steve.
âAh, that is correct, young Henderson. Hellfire Club now has a rightful heir.â Eddie approached Y/n, who expected him to give her the bottle but instead he held out his arms, making grabby hands at his baby.
Y/n handed him over without hesitation, the babyâs fusses silenced as soon as the bottle was in his mouth. âLadies and gents, Iâm honored to present to you, the first of many Munson babies, Ryder Wayne.â
The crowd went wild as the grumpy little guy scowled in response, giving his best side eye before closing them and trying to fall asleep.
âThe first of many?â Y/n scoffed, âWhere did that come from.â
âLook at his precious face and tell me you wonât have any more.â He grinned proudly down at his son, not even having to look at his girlfriend to know he was right.
Everyone wanted their picture taken holding the baby, especially the Hellfire Club. âItâs our turn next, Harrington, wrap it up.â Gareth teased, his arms across his chest as he impatiently waited for his turn to hold his best friendâs baby.
âI canât wait to have a baby,â Dustin mentioned as the club gathered around the couch, Eddie and Steveâs faces snapping to the boy immediately and shouting, âYes you can!â
The girls wanted pictures with both Eddie and Y/n, and of course Wayne needed a couple with âhis boysâ, calling Y/n back into the frame after she set Ryder gently into his arms.
âWhoa there, Missy, youâre a Munson now, get on in here.â He urged through his drawl. Her cheeks burned as she scampered back up next to Eddie, his arm wrapping around her proudly as they smiled.
âNow letâs get one of the new parents and their baby!â Jonathon suggested, peeking out from behind the camera as Nancy gathered the Polaroids and laid them on the counter to develop properly.
Wayne grinned and clapped Eddie on the shoulder before stepping out of the frame. Eddieâs cheeks were pink from his permanent soft smile, his eyes beaming at the mother of his child as she looked down at Ryder between them.
âThatâs perfect! Donât move.â Jonathon urged before snapping the photo, which would hang on the wall until they had grandchildren to show it to.
Later that evening, when all the friends left with promises of returning soon, Wayne lingered behind, waiting for the perfect time to talk to Eddie alone.
âAlright, gentlemen, as much fun as this is, I have to go lay down.â Y/n yawned, patting Wayne on the shoulder, planting a kiss on Eddieâs head, and bending down to take the baby, but not before Eddie could turn away from her. âWhat do you think youâre doing?â He asked in feigned offense.
âUh, taking him to bed?â She asked.
âNo, no, no, you just gave birth, Iâm on baby duty until youâre rested. Go! Shoo! Iâll see you in a few hours, mama.â He urged, using his free hand to swat at her playfully until she was gone from the room.
A lingering smile stayed on his lips as the men chuckled together. âI, uh, been waiting to give this to âya,â Wayne started as he reached in his pocket for his wallet.
Eddie shook his head immediately, âNo, Wayne, uh-uh, no way, we arenât taking your monââ
Wayne opened his billfold and pulled out a single gold ring, an emerald in the center of the setting. Eddieâs jaw dropped, only remembering that ring from his childhood. âIs thatââ
âGrandma Ednaâs wedding ring? Yeah. It is.â Wayne chuckled quietly before sighing and handing it to his boy, closing his fingers around it and nodding, more to himself than to Eddie.
Eddie looked at Wayne with wide eyes, a ring in one hand, a baby in the other, his life feeling surreal in this moment. He shook his head at his uncle in disbelief, Wayne nodding back at him, âYeah, itâs really happening, son.â
Eddie nodded, tears welling up in his eyes for the hundredth time in the last 24 hours.
âI never imaginedânot even in my wildest dreamsââ Eddie hiccuped through the brewing tears.
âI know, son, I know.â Wayne said, the grown boy laying his head on his uncleâs shoulder as heâd done many times before, letting a couple tears loose while he inhaled the familiar scent of cigarette smoke and motor oil lingering on his work shirt.
âThank you, Wayne. For everythingâAbsolutely everything.â The metal head urged into the old manâs shoulder, his baby boy sleeping soundly between them as the only father heâd ever truly known patted his back soothingly.
âAnd Iâd do it all over again in a heartbeat⌠youâre my boy.â Wayne mentioned through a tight smile, his life feeling surreal, too.
