"Dave, can you help me, please?" David called for his boyfriend, he was trying to apply special medicine to his rabbit's eyes but couldn't do it without Dave's help. The rabbit was a bit scared and didn't want to sit still in David's arms.
"What's up?" Dave asked, stepping out of the kitchen onto the terrace.
"I need to treat Kiki's eyes but I can't do it by myself. He's jumping out of my hands," David chuckled, holding his pet tighter.
"Oh, sure, hon. What should I do?" Dave smiled, ready to do whatever David said.
"I'll hold him, and you'll put this ointment around his eyes, OK?"
Dave took a small tube of medication and looked at the rabbit. The poor creature's eyes were a bit reddish and wide open with fear, his little heart was beating loud and fast, Dave instantly felt bad for him but there was no other way to cure the pet. David was petting Kiki's warm light brown fur with left arm, the right one was holding Kiki across his white belly. Dave tried to apply a small amount of medicine with a cotton bud but Kiki didn't like it and started to squirm and squeal loudly. Dave stepped back in shock, David, however, wasn't surprised, he pulled the rabbit closer to his chest and petted his head and ears whispering sweet and comforting words to him:
"Shhh, little one, it's OK, don't be afraid. Davie'll just put some medicine on your little eyes, you'll be healthy again," David shushed Kiki, his words were laced with love and adoration. "Let us heal you and then I'll give you your favorite treat, deal?"
Dave was so stunned by that scene that he couldn't say a word. He stood still looking at his boyfriend who was speaking to his pet like it was a small child and couldn't help but fall in love with him more. He remembered how his dad had treated him, his sisters, and their dog when Dave was just four years old. Honestly, he seemed to hate all living things. It was one day when their dog fell ill that struck little Dave hard.
"Dave! Where's this stupid boy? Come here! Watch the dog while I give her the pill," his dad told him with hatred and usual irritation in his eyes and voice.
Dave was a bit scared but came to his father and stopped by the dog. She ate something wrong the previous day and was weak, his mom asked his father to give poor dog a pill and he couldn't think of anything better to do than to ask his little son to help him hold the big dog. She was always pretty friendly and never even growled at Dave, but it was still a little scary, because there was no telling what she could do being in such bad condition.
"Oh, what a stupid bitch! I swear, I'll kill her!" his dad screamed when the dog refused to take a pill and tried to attack him. It was a weak attempt but the man was instantly pissed off and he barely restrained himself from hitting her. "Let her die!"
Dave couldn't forget how upset and heartbroken he had been when he saw his pet suffering and there was nothing he could do to help her. He tried to give her medicine and comfort the dog himself, but his father grabbed him and dragged him into the house.
So, now, standing in front of his boyfriend and his rabbit, he was torn by emotions: he felt so strong love and affection for his David and at the same time he was sad, the childhood memories ruined his mood completely. He always thought that people who didn't love animals were creepy and dangerous and was afraid that he'd be like his father. He was so lost in his thoughts that he didn't hear David calling him.
"Dave? Hey, is everything alright, babe?"
"Yes, I just… Never mind. Let's try again, buddy?" Dave asked Kiki who was sitting a bit calmer now in David's hands and took the cotton bud applying the ointment around one of the rabbit's eyes. Kiki closed it instinctively, and Dave could treat it pretty well. "That's it, Kiki, you're so smart little guy," he encouraged him and repeated his actions with the second eye.
Finished, Dave gently petted Kiki's head and smiled, although he was ready to burst in tears. He looked David in the eyes and said quietly: "I'm so happy to be your boyfriend. You're such a sweetheart, you have so beautiful soul, even the animals feel it. I love you so much, Juni."
David blushed and gave him a concern look but finally smiled timidly. He didn't expect to hear such nice words from Dave, not that he'd never told him something sweet or kind, no, but usually Dave was a bit reserved in his emotions. So hearing the praise now was even more pleasant because Dave opened his heart and very soul for a reason David had no idea, so the praise sounded incredibly sincere. David kissed him and started petting Kiki, too.
"I love you, too, sweetheart. Thanks for your help, I certainly wouldn't have done it alone."
Dave looked at the small rabbit, who completely relaxed in his owners' arms and closed his eyes enjoying the tender strokes on his head and ears. He felt a wave of warmth spreading inside his heart and stomach so he couldn't help but pull his precious boyfriend in for one more tender kiss.
Later, when Kiki was placed back in his cage and got his favorite treat David asked Dave about his previous strange behavior. Dave told him everything about his dad and dog and was pulled into the warmest hug and got the sweetest kiss in his entire life.
