Nothing like smelling smoke all night, having all your power go out, all to learn that a drunk driver had crashed, his car caught fire, exploded, and then set the forest on fire so you spent all night worrying that you’ll have to evacuate, and now the fires grown to 600 acres and you only got 3 hours of sleep before you were taking photos of the most expensive stuff in your house just in case it caught fire and you needed to let your insurance know what you lost, and then you are loading your important stuff in the car as well as your cats and driving to a hotel on the other side of town :)

Don’t drink and drive please

While I'm nowhere in the 'western' world (not even the Islamic world), I do think such measures of gun safety as the above & policies banning the use of guns while under the influence of drugs or alcohol would make sense similar to such policies about driving cars or working with other kinds of heavy machinery along with a gun safety & usage test (similar to those of car ownership). It's an overlooked, but important part of gun safety that my editor has first suggested a while ago at a seminar in question while respecting the 2nd amendment & taking into account the different associations of guns between the urban & the rural (with violence & crime in the former & more with sporting, hunting & self-defence in the latter), which I do think is a reasonable step towards improving safety. If one is to own a gun, it might be a good idea to treat it like you would a car or (in my pastoral culture & those of neighbouring ones to Central Asia) horses of transport & use it only when sober. It might look cool to drink & shoot, but having seen it irl, it actually looks dumb much like drunk driving does (& is at least as dangerous to even to the wielder). Maybe we can make some works to show it in that light like how the more recent GTA games have done with making drunk driving look just as stupid.

Here's a view into gun ownership in my country (complete with urban & rural differences in context): https://mongoliafaq.com/2021/01/21/what-are-gun-laws-in-mongolia-who-can-own-guns/

Study shows majority of gun owners support specific gun safety policies

“This is not as partisan an issue as it's perceived, and this is not as controversial an issue as it is perceived,” said Michael Siegel, who

Gun legislation is a polarizing topic — especially on the campaign trail, where it is a longtime staple of attack ads on candidates from both parties. But voter attitudes about gun policy aren’t as divided as they seem, according to a study first shared with POLITICO.

A report released Wednesday from 97Percent, a bipartisan group of gun owners and non-gun owners that conducts research on gun safety policies, surveyed 1,078 gun owners nationwide to examine their perceptions of specific gun safety policy details. The study found broad support among gun owners for laws that aim to keep people at high risk of violence from gaining access to guns.

Gun policies and crime have been consistent top priorities for voters this midterm cycle, but most polling hasn’t focused on gun owners’ perspectives. The report found that three-quarters of gun owners are concerned about school shootings, and 71 percent are concerned about mass shootings. Sixty-six percent are concerned about an increase in gun-related homicides and gun crimes in cities. Over 80 percent believe people convicted of a violent crime should not be able to purchase or possess a gun.

These beliefs aren’t restricted to Democrats or independents — Republican gun owners hold these views as well. Forty percent of the respondents identified as Republicans, in addition to 35 percent who are Democrats and 17 percent who are independents.

“This is not as partisan an issue as it’s perceived, and this is not as controversial an issue as it is perceived,” said Michael Siegel, a professor at the Tufts University School of Medicine who led the research. “The most important finding was that there is a wide enough area of common ground between gun owners and non-gun owners that we believe that is sufficient in order to carve out policies that would be extremely effective.”

Red flag laws, universal background checks, required permits for the purchase or possession of a gun and violent misdemeanor laws are among those that win support from gun owners, according to the polling. Altogether, those policies have the potential to reduce firearm homicide rates by as much as 28 percent, the study says. Additionally, when specific provisions are included in gun laws, support from gun owners increases. Respondents also said they don’t believe there’s an “inherent conflict between the constitutional protection of gun rights and new laws designed to keep guns out of the hands of people who are at high risk for violence.”

A law prohibiting gun possession by those convicted of a domestic violence crime has the highest support among gun owners (78 percent). Republican gun owners support that measure at the same level. Republican respondents also supported prohibiting gun possession by people subject to a domestic violence restraining order (75 percent) and requiring background checks for concealed carry permits (71 percent).
