Waiting for "Moonvale"...

It's such a weird feeling, but I'm so interested in this whole aesthetic of small European cities. I grew up in a small town myself, but Duskwood and Redlog Pines have a completely different feel. By the way, I'm still wondering why the second game isn't named after the city where the events take place.

I remember the first time I played "Duskwood". My friend mentioned it in a general chat, and I remembered playing the first episode back in 2020. And then I just downloaded the game and went through all the episodes in almost five days. It's not an interactive movie game, just text messages, calls, videos and photos, but you feel like you're walking around this city with them. The characters feel more alive than ever, and I am grateful to every actor who took part in the filming. I'd especially like to be friends with Jessy, she is charming. I was also always choosing between Jake and Richy. Characters like Richy always interest me first in fandoms. They just make me feel comfortable. Warren Graham from "Life Is Strange", the Eleventh Doctor from "Doctor Who"... And, of course, Jake with his ":)". I think he's a bit like Seven from "Mystic Messenger", although Seven is more of a pretender to be cheerful.

After completing the seventh episode, where Richy "suffered" from the main villain, I accidentally came across a meme that revealed his true identity to me. I was upset. Not only because I like him, but also because I don't see much logic in it. Why did they have to make him the bad guy? It seems like a big cliche. I really want to believe that he'll come back to Moonvale because all this talk about him has broken my heart. It's incredibly strange that all our old chats have been deleted and friends don't respond (even within the universe). And, of course, it's interesting to know what exactly Charlie and Ash talked about.

We're all waiting for Jake to return, aren't we? :)

Empathizing and Forgiving…

Jessy- Richy has gained consciousness. I heard from a friend who works in the hospital.

Oshi - Are you going to see him?

Jessy- No. I just wanted to let you know.

Oshi - 😔

Of course. They wouldn’t want to see him. At least not yet.

The group was betrayed by their closest friend after all. How could they forgive him that easily? Regardless, they were worried for him for the past month.

Maybe it was because she was not close with Hannah, or maybe because her instincts hinted it was him from the beginning, or simply she pitied him because of his condition, Oshi was able to at least harbour a little sympathy for him. At least empathizing with him to some extent, as to what led him to do that. Regardless, he had to pay for his sins.

That day, still haunted her and gave her nightmares often. There was an explosion inside the cave. Everyone thought Richy was done for. Yet somehow, he survived. She was relieved.

No matter how horrible his crimes were, she was still fond of him. Richy was her friend after all.

Maybe she was being stupid. Too forgiving.

She couldn’t help it. What Hannah, Amy and Richy did to Jennifer was just terrible. If she was in Jennifer's shoes, she would never be able to forgive them.

Oshi had a motto in her life, “Always be honest, and pay for your mistakes right then and there.”

None of these tragedies would’ve happened if they simply reported the accident and paid for their mistakes. It is true that, for them, it was a mistake. But the end result was just too much for it to be called so. An innocent life was sacrificed. Above all, how they hid her body deep in the forest and feigned ignorance was as horrible as Richy kidnapping Hannah.

Guilt was such a strong emotion.

Albeit many people tend to ignore it.

That was the reason she could empathize with Richy. Maybe even forgive him in the future.

Amidst the thoughts, Oshi got in a taxi, heading to Duskwood.

***

-Jake. I’m on my way to Duskwood.

-Jessy told me, Richy has woken up.

-I’m not sure what to say when I see him. But somehow I have the feeling that I should go.

-Maybe you wouldn’t understand me. Hannah is your sister after all.

-I’m at the hospital. I’ll text you later.

-☹️I’m not even sure if you’re reading this. Still, if you are, please know that I still love you.

-And I’m still waiting for you.❤️️

***

Two police officers were guarding the hospital room. Oshi had to obtain a pass to go in. Richy was lying on the bed, pretty much the same as he was until yesterday. Most of his body was bandaged, it was painful to even look at.

Richy avoided her eyes, bloodshot eyes rolled around the room, looking everywhere but her.

“Richy.”

Still no response. She was left with mixed feelings. What was she supposed to do? Confront him? Or console him? She could not know.

“If I am to be thoughtful, I should give you some time. You just woke up after all.” Biting the already bleeding lower lip, Oshi continued. “But I don’t want to. I don’t…want to make this easier for you. I can’t…not when I know how hurt the others were.”

She crossed her arms, clinging hard to her chest, “So even if you don’t want to, I won’t stop coming here until you look at me in the eye. Go ahead if you insist.”

His eyes shook as he looked into her eyes. Pain, guilt, remorse, regret, and more, thousands of emotions passing through those eyes. Oshi could feel her eyes stinging, clenching her teeth, and she spoke. “You can’t avoid us forever, Richy.”

A faint voice escaped his dried-up lips, in a hoarse voice, “Then what am I supposed to do, Oshi?”

“...I don’t know either. But definitely not this. Richy, do you know for what I am the angriest at you?” Taking his silence akin to a no, she answered on her own. “That you tried to take your life…How dare you run away like that? You think everything would’ve been solved then?”

Her voice trembling, stinging eyes threatening to tear up, Oshi could not help but go on. She just had to. “Did you even think about Hannah, who’d have to live with that?! About Dan, who shot you?! How horrible would they feel?! And Jessy !” A suppressed sob cut off her trembling voice. Tears flowed, not letting her speak.

“...I…just couldn’t think…of anything…I’m sorry, Oshi. So terribly sorry.”

Soon, they were interrupted by a police officer. The visiting time was over.

Oshi just turned back, without bidding farewell to Richy. She was welled up with so many feelings, that she couldn’t even notice Jessy, She was standing in a corner, Jessy hadn’t gone to see Richy despite coming all the way there. Jessy was relieved, in a way, that Oshi didn’t notice her. A part of her wanted to comfort Oshi, another part wanted to avoid her at any cost. In the end, the latter won. Oshi took off in a taxi as she watched from far.

-Jake.

-You know, I really want to run into your arms right now.

-I want you to comfort me.

-I feel so terrible. I didn’t want to hurt him, yet, a rush of hatred filled me. I don’t know how I said all that.

-Jake, please…

-The End.

Chapter 11 - Unknown hearts…

Richy awkwardly laughed, not knowing what to say. Soon, he turned serious.

“This might even be the last time we meet at the hospital.”

“Hannah said she’d do her best to drop the case. But the police are saying they can proceed with it even if the victim doesn’t want it or something.” She got up, sighing. “Let’s wait and see. Richy, never give up your hopes for a new life. Be it now or in the future. Okay?”

Richy smiled, “Yes, ma’am.”

“Then we’re going back. Adios, Richy!”

He chuckled, “Adios!”

***

On their way back, Oshi suddenly remembered seeing Jake and Phil together last night. She turned to him, holding his hand as they got in the taxi.

“Jake.”

“Hm?”

“What did you talk with Phil yesterday?”

He turned away to look out from the window, “Nothing much. Just small talk.”

She was amused to hear the word ‘small talk’ from Jake. Tilting her body to his side, she spoke in an entertained voice, “Really? My Jake had a small talk with Phil? Someone you met and talked to for the first time?”

Noticing him blush when she said ‘my Jake,’ Oshi giggled.

“Well. Because a certain someone often mentioned how Phil lifted their mood and offered free drinks every time she visited Duskwood. Not to mention how he texted occasionally. I just feel like I’ve known Phil for some time already.”

“No way! Are you jealous?” She giggled, squeezing his cheek.

He removed her hand grumpily, “No. I don’t dwell on such useless emotions.”

“Ha ha! You ARE jealous!”

“He just thanked me for clearing his name. Jessica had told him that I worked with you.” He finally gave up grumpily.

“Oh.Okay then.” She playfully tapped his shoulder, “You should’ve told me earlier, you know?”

***

Phil stood by the counter when Jake walked back in after a phone call. Phil greeted Jake with a smile, to which Jake politely greeted him back.

“Hello, Jake. I’ve heard a lot about you. It’s nice to meet you finally.”

“Hello. Same here, Phil Hawkins. I’ve heard a lot about you too.”

Phil was genuinely curious about this stranger. The mysterious hacker helped the group to find Hannah, along with Oshi. Not to mention it was thanks to him that Phil could get himself out. According to Oshi, Jake was a warm person who was a bit awkward with strangers. Albeit Jessy and the group bore a completely different idea. To them, Jake was a cold, heartless guy who they did not want to get involved with if it wasn’t for Oshi. However, Lily seemed to be very fond of him, unexpectedly.

However, things could be seen in a different light at the moment. Somehow, Jake seemed to get along well with the group in his own way. The group welcomed him initially, maybe because they did not want to hurt Oshi. And he didn’t appear to be as antisocial as he was described; instead, he was very introverted.

‘So this is the kind of man Oshi likes.’, Phil thought to himself.

“I actually wanted to thank you, personally. I heard from Jessy that you and Oshi worked together.”

Jake sat on a bar chair, holding the cocktail glass Phil handed him. “No need to thank me. Your name was only cleared in the process of finding Hannah.” taking a sip, he added. ”And it was Oshi who wanted to help you.”

Hearing her name in the voice of her beloved boyfriend left him with a bitter heart. Somehow it seemed that he shouldn’t approach her as easily as he did in the past. Somehow it was as if the distance between him and her suddenly escalated.

Phil could not defeat the bitter smile invading his face, “I see. Oshi and I…are good friends.”

“I know.” was what immediately left Jake’s lips, causing a sting deep down in his heart.

“Oshi really likes you. A lot. You were all she talked about whenever she got drunk.”

Sorrow and guilt were evident in the dark blue eyes as he muttered, almost inaudible, “…I see. I apologize if she caused you trouble.”

At least this boy was sincere about her. Phil had a feeling that he could let go of her if it was for this man.

But what was wrong with his thought process today?

Just until then, Phil was so sure that his feelings for Oshi were never more than a mere infatuation. Also, to add to that, it was not even that deep.

Then what caused him a bitter and pricking heart?

He wondered, did he actually love her? Not even realizing his feelings, did he really waste an entire year maintaining the boundaries?

No. That was not the case. He did know. He clearly knew the extent of his feelings for her. But he ignored it all.

Why?

It was simple. He wanted to be around her for a long time, look at her bright smile and sparkling eyes with a warm heart for as long as he could. Simple as that.

And now, her eyes were sparkling more than they ever did. That was enough for him. She was genuinely happy, not just pretending as she did in the past. And the cause of that tremendous happiness was the man sitting in front of him right now.

That was more than enough for him to let go of her. After all, the Oshi in his heart was always free, akin to a bird. She had to spread her wings and fly as much as she wanted to.

Someone might say he was foolish to let go of her in vain, or he was simply a coward who feared rejection. However, for him, that didn’t matter at all.

“I will let go of her. Now that I've seen you, I’m sure it won’t be in vain.” a huge grin was evident on his face as he let out his deepest secret. And who would’ve thought he would say this to the last person he thought he would?

The man who was loved by the girl he loved, by the same girl who had no clue of his feelings towards her.

Chapter 12 - Moving in

“I will let go of her. Now that I saw you, I’m sure it won’t be in vain.”

Surprise was evident in the pair of blue irises as Jake heard Phil’s confession. Of course he would be. Even he himself was.

Phil chuckled, “Don’t worry. I can bet this bar itself that Oshi has no clue.”

Oshi was indeed a smart girl. She was good at reading people as well. But she never seemed to consider the possibility of someone being interested in her, romantically. He would say she was being too humble.

A little smile appeared on Jake’s face, “She really doesn’t know. And I don’t think she would ever know, unless you tell her yourself that is.”

“Then she would never know.” Phil gulped down the last of the cocktail, “I am content being good friends with her you know. But of course, if she ever turn to me, I wouldn’t hesitate. So take good care of her.”

“Such a thing would never happen.”

.....

Phil chuckled softly, remembering the little conversation he had last week.

Oshi and Jake were moving in together today it seemed. They were progressing rather quickly. Oshi really was quite reckless and daring at times.

Was getting over this woman even possible?

***

Jessy- Oshi, when are you moving in?

Oshi - We are already on the way.

Jessy- The furniture and other things?

Oshi- Hired professionals of course.😊

Jessy- Did you go see your parents? Last time you only called them right?

- How did it go?🤩

Oshi- Yeah. We went there yesterday.

- Jake was really nervous! You had to see him!😂

- My parents really liked him!

Jessy- Congratulations on both😍 Tell Jake I wished him too.

Oshi- Thanks Jessy😄 I’ll tell him.

“Jessy told me to congratulate you.”

Jake turned his head a little, still focusing on the road. “For what?”

“For moving on. And…for getting thumbs up from my parents?”

His lips curved up, causing her heart to skip a beat. “Tell Jessica, I thanked her.”

“Right! I was gonna ask you. Why do you call her Jessica?”

He tilted his head as if to ask what’s the problem with that, “Obviously, because that’s her name.”

“But we all call her Jessy.”

“Um...We were never close enough to go on a nick name basis.”

Oshi chuckled to his serious answer, “Ha ha! Yeah, it’s true, indeed. But that makes her feel awkward. So just call her Jessy.” She added, “Do you know what she feels when you call her ‘Jessica’? That you’re expressing your dislike towards her.”

He turned his head abruptly, surprised. “What? No. I never disliked Jessica. I never had any reason to. If anything, she helped us a lot by being on our side every time.”

“I know that. But others don’t know you that well.”

“It’s fine as long as you know.”

“No. It’s not. And I don’t want Jessy to get hurt. So call her Jessy from now on.”

“Alright. If you want me to. It’s not even that hard.”

“Right?”

“Yes. But I should say, I’ve noticed that you’re especially considerate of her.”

“Of course! Is there anyone who can dislike Jessy? Um..how to say it?” She continued, turning to his side excitedly, “Jessy is like a cute little puppy you can’t help but love. She awakens my protective instincts.”

Jake chuckled, looking at her excited face, amusement not hidden in his voice, “I see. Then I shall definitely use the nickname to call her, so that you won’t be upset.”

Surprisingly, Jake tend to play around with her time to time, on the contrary to her prior impressions. Her heart ached thinking how sad his life had been so far for him to have habitually concealed his playful nature. Ironically, she even felt proud that it was her, who could bring out the ludic boy in him.

“Oh? Wait this!”

“What is it?”

She held the phone in front for him when he stopped due to the traffic. The news article went on,

Emily Hudson’s tragic death. Who is the perpetrator?

Emily Hudson, a twenty five years old female office worker was reported missing on Saturday morning by Bill Roberts, the fiance. The police of Q city immediately dispatched several search parties only to find her handbag and a pair of heels dumped in a garbage pit. Emily had been missing for nearly a week, until Yesterday night, around 11pm, a homeless person had found a dead body behind the H&C department store car park and reported it to the police. The identity of the dead woman was found to be the missing girl, Emily Hudson. The cause of death is to be revealed after the autopsy. As of the culprit behind this brutal kidnapping and murder is yet to be found. Not to mention, this was the second murder happened in the same area in a span of one week.

“My apartment is also behind the H&C. The rent is cheap there and it’s near the university so many students live in that apartment complex. Not to mention many office workers who work in the area.”

Jake frowned, before focusing on the road again, “The alley behind the H&Q is the road that leads to the apartment complex. It is well lit and all the CCTV cameras are working, there was no possibility someone could drop a corpse there without noticing.”

Oshi blinked, confused and surprised, “How would you know all that?”

He answered nonchalantly, “Of course I looked into it. You lived there after all. I had to check if it was safe enough.”

Bewildered, Oshi stared at him for a moment before asking, “Safe enough?”

“I checked it for the first time because of the man without a face. For my peace of mind, I usually checked it at least once a week.” Then turning to her with a serious face, he added, “Oshi, I promise I did not look into your phone or computer at least once after the case was solved, neither did I looked into your personal life. I do not want you to think of me as a creepy person.”

As she continued to keep silent, he went on, hesitantly, “I only looked into your workplace and your home. I had to make sure you were not in danger by any means.”

She was dumbfounded. To be honest she didn’t know if she was supposed to be angry for looking into her work without permission, or praise him for trying his best not to pry too much into her life. After all, she told him a lot about her workplace and the day to day life via texts.

In the end she decided to let it slide for once.

“Well. I would be moving out anyway. I’d let it slide this once, but don’t do it again. Okay?”

He nodded. “I promise I won’t. Unless it’s an emergency, that is.” to which she chuckled.

A person cannot be changed that easily after all.

Chapter 13 - Our new home :)

English is not my first language so please spare me the grammar mistakes.

You can read the previous chapters from here.

Previous Chapter - Next chapter

***

Their new home was a neat apartment on the seventh floor in a complex of fifteen stories. Not to say, expensive. Jake really must be earning a lot, she thought as she looked around. The packages were all around the living room. The apartment consisted of three bedrooms, two bathrooms, the kitchen and the dining area other than the living room. The gym and the swimming pool was accessible for the residents, and there was also a park. The name of the complex was ‘Eden’, whereas she thought the name did it’s job.

Now it was up to them to arrange everything.

Noticing his study desk and the computer, she pointed a finger, turning to him. “Don’t put that in the study.”

He blinked, confused, “Why?”

“You’d spend most of the day there, not to mention you don’t even sleep for that long.” This was her biggest fear when she heard he’d be forking from home mostly, unless he’s required to be at a particular place.

“Where am I supposed to work then?”

“Bedroom. It’s spacious enough. Isn’t it?”

He scratched the back of his head, befuddled, “Well, it is. But why?”

“Otherwise I won’t be able to see you. I can’t just barge into your study, but I definitely can, into the bedroom. I won’t make a sound, I promise. Hm?”

His lips curved up, “It’s fine. Let’s do that.”

She grinned, akin to a child, hanging onto his arm, “Thanks! But we can keep the study, of course. I will also need it time to time.” As he nodded a thought crossed her mind.

Jake always let her have her way. But was he really comfortable with that? Or was he putting up with her requests?

“Actually I have trouble focusing on anywhere. That’s why I need the study to be efficient. Jake?”

“Yes?”

“Do you also have such problems?”

She was not sure. Especially because she did not know what sort of work he did. He did not tell her. She did not ask him. As if an unspoken rule existed between them. She assumed two reasons for this, either he was prohibited to talk about his work outside or he would put her in some sort of danger if he did tell her. Either way, she was sure that Jake did not love his job. He was doing this so they could be together. And she was guilty for it.

He shook his head, looking ahead. “No. In fact, for the past years I had to work under extreme conditions like really noisy or cramped places at times. Thus, I’m fine with anywhere.”

“I see. Alright, then.”

Just what kind of a life did he live until now? She could only leave it to her imagination. For some reason, Jake doesn’t seem to want to talk about his past. Thus, she did not want to pry into it anymore.

While she was deep in such thoughts, Jake snaked his arms round her neck from behind. Oshi looked back, surprised. He simply smiled, pointing something with his chin. She looked at her neck and gasped.

A silver necklace was around her neck! The pendant was…

One blue iris…

“I learned that Iris flower means hope. I actually made this while I was clearing my name.” Scratching the back of his neck, Jake avoided her eyes. “Because you’re m hope…I thought it’d match you. I hope you like it.” With a hint of a red hue on his cheeks, he looked adorably nervous.

Honestly. How could I not like this?

That day, a piece of his enormous was gifted for her to keep.

***

“Jake, should we hold a housewarming party?”

They had finally managed to arrange everything orderly in their new home and now, were lying on their cozy bed, together.

“Hm? Okay.”

“Do you have anyone you want to invite? Other than Hannah and Lily, I mean.”

She was curious. Jake must have at least had a few friends before he had to hide, or so she thought. After all, Jake wasn’t as antisocial as he pretended to be.

Contrary to her thoughts, he shook his head. “Not really.”

“Really?” He nodded again, confirming. Maybe he felt detached to his old friends, she thought.

Oshi, herself could relate to it. She herself had only a very small circle of friends. Jake was even more reserved than her, so of course he wouldn’t open up to anyone that easily.

“Okay then. We can invite our friends from Duskwood, and two of my closest friends. Is that fine with you?” He only nodded, thus she continued, “When should we hold it?”

“Next weekend?”

“Yeah! I’ll invite them right away!” She jumped up, akin to an excited child, a chuckle escaping his mouth as he watched her.

She had a very mysterious, at times a confusing personality. She would spend hours without a word yet become so talkative that she would talk to him for an entire night. She would not look for him for hours yet would refuse to leave his cuddle at times. Albeit openly showing off her affection, at times making him embarrassed, she would get very shy the next moment.

To Jake, Oshi was like a puzzle. A perplexing one at that. It would take him a lifetime to solve, yet he was sure he would never get bored of it.

Every time he witnessed a new side of his beloved, he would feel very proud of himself.

He never knew human affection could be so lovely, heartwarming and pure.

It was the first time.

Someone loved him without expecting anything in return.

Without ever trying to change him into something else.

Someone who wholeheartedly accepted him, without a single complain.

She was such a great woman.

And he did not deserve her.

Yet he could never let go of her.

For her, this house will be their home. But for him, she was his home.

***

“Oshi! The house is really great!”

“I know right!”

Sarah was looking around the apartment with Noah and Oshi.

Sarah Edevane and Noah Walker were her beloved friends. Oshi’s friendship with Sarah run to their high school days while Noah joined them in the university. Noah was also her colleague, though they work in different departments.

Sarah was an optimistic young lady, who reminded her of Jessy. Bright blond hair and amber eyes, Sarah was, akin to a little sun. Including her personality. While Noah, an ebony haired guy who possessed bluish gray eyes, was a happy go lucky lad who immediately clicked with her on the first time they met.

Jake had heard so much about these people in the past few days. Oshi was especially close with the duo than with her other friends and colleagues. As always, it was quite unpredictable. The three friends had completely different personalities, yet they somehow blended well. Maybe that was her charm.

The bell rang, Jake stepped up not to disturb his beloved, who was having fun with her pals. They were expecting their friends from Duskwood, yet two completely unexpected people stood at the doorstep.

"Silence"

pairing : Jake x MC(Layla)

summary : Jake realizes how he feels for MC.But isn't it too late?

Ever since Layla went missing, Jake couldn't narrow his eyes. His hands trembled at every thought of what could happen to the girl.

It all started with Layla not replying to his messages. She stopped being online. She wasn't active in the group. As if she didn't exist.

Even though he was worried, he wasn't getting paranoid. After all, she could fall asleep or meet friends. The fact was strange that she would not have informed the group, but it could always be an option.

He began to worry seriously when the girl hadn't spoken for six hours.

JESSY : Layla, we started worried about you

JESSY: Please, Layla

JESSY: You can't leave us like that!

JESSY: I'm so worried, please write something

DAN: I can't believe I'm writing this, but I'm worried about you, queen of riddles

DAN: Hello?

LILLY: Layla?

LILLY: Everything is okay?

LILLY: Just write everything is okay

LILLY: I'm seriously worried!

But nothing was okay.

Jake was breathing heavily as he read the messages.

JAKE: Layla, please answer.

JAKE: Layla if something happens you can tell me.

JAKE: You know I worried, right?

Silence, silence, silence.

Jake's eyes began to sting slightly from the tears that appeared there.

His sister is already missing. It was not known if she was still alive, and knowing that he would never see her again broke his heart.

Yet even such a painful loss was to be endured with her by his side.

And now that he could lose her too ...

It was destroying him.

Even though they never saw each other and never spoke live. It was she who made his face smile. It was she who made his blue eyes sparkle with cheerfulness.

The state when he looked at her in the pictures .. He felt it for the first time in his life. That feeling in the stomach that people probably call butterflies ... He was so happy when he write with her.

When he looked at her face, his mind and body relaxed. She was the first person he thought of that way. He wouldn't count how many times he wanted to take her tiny hand and assure her that everything was going to be okay. He wanted so badly to touch her lovely brown hair. He wanted to hear her wonderful laugh and see the smile she gave to her loved ones.He wanted to introduce her to his mother. She would definitely be glad to that he find such a wonderful girlfriend.

Even though he often felt she didn't deserve her, he couldn't let her go. He knew his life would no longer be meaningful without her.

It was she who made his world take on colors. It made each breath full of fresh air.

She was his heart. His soul. His life.

He still had hope. On the fact that she will see these three magic words: Layla is online. That Layla would write that nothing happened. That she just didn't look at the phone because she was busy.

This hope was gone the moment they got a message from their greatest enemy.

(NUMBER UNKNOWN) Anyone lost?

(NUMBER UNKNOWN) Oh

(NUMBER UNKNOWN) Look, I have found your undoing!

(NUMBER UNKNOWN) sent a photo

The picture showed a girl.

But not as they remembered her.

Everyone saw her in the photos. She was always smiling and radiant.

Here ... it seemed different.

Her arms and legs were bound. Her lips were covered with gray tape. The mascara from her eyelashes washed away with the tears that were on her cheeks. Her brown hair was a mess.

(UNKNOWN NUMBER) You want me to kill her in front of your eyes?

JESSY: Please don't hurt her!

(UNKNOWN NUMBER) You guys don't know how to have fun .. Okay so I'll send you a photo afterwards

DAN: You motherfucker!

(UNKNOWN NUMBER) is now offline.

Fuck, fuck, fuck.

Jake didn't realize his cheeks were wet. There were many things he was unaware of at this point. He was out of control when some of his computer equipment landed on the floor. Neither did he control a loud scream, and then a sob that shook his body.

When he saw her .. She was so vulnerable. She couldn't even defend herself.

Jake's breathing, despite the fact that several minutes had passed, did not calm down at all. In the distance he could hear notifications for new messages, but he didn't care.

Yes, Jake was unaware of many things, but he knew one thing.

He loved Layla. And what you love should be defended until death.

He knew he would do anything to save his love.

Without you

A short story about Richy's funeral and how MC is coping after the mine fire.

warnings: mention JakexMC, mental breakdown, slight sexual abuse

I stared blankly at the group of people standing in front of me. Nothing caught my attention, all the colors washed into one, and time didn't seem to pass at all. He stopped, but already a week ago. A week ago when I first heard the "MC, the mine blew up. They found a man's body." My cheeks were dry because I wasn't crying anymore. It seemed to me that I got rid of all the water from my body that I had in me.

And when the bronze coffin was lowered into the deep grave, I heard something that I will never forget for the rest of my life. I heard a loud sob that was similar to the moan of a wounded animal that is fighting with all its might to survive. I looked towards the sound and saw a red-haired girl who was clutched by a taller and bigger bearded man. I tensed my whole body and face to stay in place so as not to walk over to her and take her in my arms. Jessy's fregile body trembled with spasms of desperate crying as Dan tried to hold her still. My Jessy, who I always associated with smile, warmth and determination, was now the definition of surrender. And that broke me the most, because why was fate so cruel that it took away even the greatest ray of happiness we had left?

The coffin fell down and was covered with earth. People will remember him as a cheerful and playful mechanic who could always make you feel better. I wasn't sure how I would remember him. Right now, it was just a taste of betrayal I had never experienced before.

My arms were folded over my chest, I stood there with a stony face as my mind stormed. No, it was a typhoon. Murderous and merciless. All I wanted was to silence all these thoughts and go to sleep. To be unaware of all the fuss and chaos for at least one hour. One hour of peace, is that much? But my brain wouldn't give up. It still flooded me with thoughts and anxiety. Jake. What has become of him? Did he die in the mine, and if so, where was his body? If he got away, did the FBI catch him? And they did, I was sure of it. Did they just kill him? Or worse, were they torturing him? I was replaying our last conversation. I love you. He confessed it to me. He actually told me he loved me and I replied the same to him. God, I would give anything to turn back time and stop him from saying those words. Maybe then it would hurt less.

My God, I would give anything to turn back time, get my way and go into that mine alone instead of letting him go there. He wasn't supposed to die there.

– So you showed up.

I turned to a female voice I didn't know yet. However, I immediately recognized the woman standing in front of me. Missing Hannah Donfort stood before me as if nothing had happened.

– Hi, Hannah. Nice to finally meet you. – I made an effort to be friendly but I honestly didn't feel like talking to either of them. Well, maybe except Jessy, because only she could understand what I felt at that moment. I felt a special bond between me, Jessy, and Richy. It wasn't a big deal, but it was ours. Our little something that gave me a certain sense of belonging to their group.I scanned the people around her.

Seeing them all was very strange and almost stressful, because our contact so far was only by phone. Thomas was standing next to her, giving me a not-so-pleasant look. In fact, he almost always had that look on his face, so I wasn't too concerned. After all, I didn't like him much after all the stupid things he'd done while looking for his girlfriend.

On the other side of her, I recognized her sister, Lilly. Our relationship was... dynamic. From a lot of hatred to a quite successful friendship, the only thing that separated us was solving the puzzle together with Jake. The blonde gave me a soft smile and I couldn't help but wonder if Jake's smile would be similar to hers? Did the color of her eyes resemble his? Did the warmth of her gaze even remotely reflect his? They were half siblings after all, they must have had something in common. Lilly seems to have sensed that I was thinking of a hacker because her face turned violently sad.

And behind them stood Dan, who was still hugging Jessy, but she wasn't crying anymore. The mascara had dried on her cheeks, and she stared at me with the same dull eyes that I had a dozen or so minutes ago. She stared at me and her eyes were so... alien. With one look from her, I understood that our first meeting would be without a smile and a warm hug.

– How dare you come here? – I was snapped out of watching the others by Hannah's sharp question. – Who invited you? What happened wasn't enough for you?

What the fuck?

– What are you talking about, Hannah? – I asked cautiously, my jaw clenching tight

– You think I don't know anything? I know Richy wanted you to come to him. Maybe if you'd done that instead of sending Jake there, they'd both still be alive!

I opened my eyes in amazement, and my blood suddenly began to boil. I looked at them all in disbelief to hear that it was some kind of bad joke, but they stood as they had been standing before. Lilly had her eyes fixed on the ground, Thomas continued to stare at me with his dull and unfavorable gaze, and Jessy, even though she was looking at me, I knew that her heart was somewhere else.

– You know shit. You don't know anything about what really happened, so don't accuse me. – I growled at her, losing patience. The girl I didn't know, and yet to whom I gave the last months of my life, made me mud, and the people I helped didn't even defend me with a single word.

– Oh yeah? So it wasn't like Richy wanted you to come to Duskwood and you agreed to let Jake go instead of you? – she asked in a venomous tone and I fell silent. Because basically that's exactly how it was. – It wasn't like you used him to save your own skin? It wasn't like you knew full well it could kill him and you still agreed to it? It wasn't like you let him die instead of you?

– Shut up. – I mumbled, but she didn't listen to me. She kept stabbing daggers into my bleeding heart. – I said, shut up!

I was breathing fast and my heart was beating mercilessly fast causing a sharp pain in my chest. Nobody interrupted her. They all think I'm the cause of Richy's death. Jake's death.

– And now you're boasting because you think he did it for you? – she asked and I felt myself falling apart. – Do you think he cared about you? He's only been using you the whole time to find me.

I stared at her not understanding a single word. One sentence from her and I knew she was still in love with the hacker. I glanced briefly at Lilly, who shook her head slightly. She did not know.

So why should I pretend I'm okay when I'm not? Should I allow myself to be treated this way by the person for whose search I gave all my strength?

– And you're still in love with the boy who blew you off. – I said dryly. – Hannah, tell me, don't you have at least a little respect not to start an argument in the cemetery right after we buried our friend?!

A dry snort escaped her lips.

– Don't make me laugh, MC. Just accept that you should never get involved in this. If you hadn't, our friends would still be alive.

Once again, surprise flashed across my face. She.. didn't know she sent them my number?

I had enough. It was her game that I wasn't going to play anymore. I moved forward, passing everyone I had called friends before.

– Before you start to accuse me again, ask them how it really was. Go ahead, ask Thomas why I got involved. Ask them how you ruined my life.

Lilly grabbed my hand, but I pulled away from her grip. I couldn't and didn't want to look at them. Not now and never in my life.

* * *

Crowd, sweaty bodies and alcohol. These three things accompanied me that evening. I didn't count the amount of high-proof liquors I drank. They were not colorful, light drinks, but pure vodka, which allowed me to forget faster. Get away from what happened. I danced, wiggling my hips, brushing against random people as neon and flickering lights illuminated my tired face.

At one point I swallowed some colored pills that were given to me - but I didn't care. At that moment, I would swallow anything that would give me a moment of solace. One minute I was dancing with a girl I didn't know, and the next I was pinned against the bathroom wall, kissed by an older man.

My body was sticky from alcohol, sweat and other unknown substances. I felt my hair tangled. At that moment, I only wanted one thing. Death. I wanted to cry. Oh god, I wanted to howl as loud as I could, but not even a single tear ran down my dead face. The man covered my skin with more wet kisses. He alternately drooled my cleavage, neck and shoulders, and I just stared blankly ahead and begged for someone to end it.

I don't know how, but I freed myself from the man's tight grip. Perhaps someone sent me a guardian angel, perhaps someone took pity on the girl who drank too much, and perhaps I regained some strength to oppose him. I didn't remember how I got to the motel room, but I only woke up when I ran into the bathroom. I didn't hesitate - I immediately staggered to the shower.

I clumsily opened the glass door of the cabin, and then my legs refused to obey. I fell onto the white paddling pool, bruising my knees painfully. I put my hands on the glass, trying to get air, but the harder I did, the more I was suffocating. My head throbbed and my body writhed in convulsions of pain. After turning on the tap with water, my hand fell, knocking most of the things off the shelf, making a loud bang. It wasn't important. Feeling the icy water pour over my burning body, I felt as if someone had given me life back.

I sighed, hanging my head, feeling my hair sticking more and more to my forehead. I don't even know when the water started mixing with my tears.

It wasn't like you let him die instead of you?

If you hadn't, our friends would still be alive.

She is right. You are disgustingly selfish. You should die there.

You couldn't handle it so you're off to drink and fuck with some old creep?

You should die there.

A soft, pitiful moan escaped my lips as more trickles began to run down my face. I clenched my trembling fingers against my thighs as hard as I could, crying louder and more wistfully. Nothing mattered to me. Not when I knew I had let the man I loved suffer for me. My lungs refused to obey me, and I felt such a piercing pain that I hadn't felt in a long time. I choked on my own saliva that landed on my chin and hands. At one point, I howled like a wounded animal because I couldn't control it anymore. It was like torture. I begged in my mind for it to end, but absolution never came.

Jake is dead because of you.

I closed my eyes, wrapped my arms around my waist, and screamed again, doubled over. My forehead touched the white paddling pool.

As if behind the fog, I heard someone opening the cabin door. I didn't open my eyes. I closed my eyes tighter when I felt a gentle squeeze on my shoulder, followed by a pleasant smell and warmth emanating from the other person.

– MC, calm down. – he whispered in a trembling voice right into my ear, his trembling fingers running through my wet hair. I pressed my forehead against the hard surface as hard as I could, almost breaking my nails from how hard I pressed them against my skin. – You are safe. I am with you.

– Jake? – I croaked

This voice was like the fulfillment of the most secret desires.

It took me a few long moments to come to my senses. I opened my eyes in an amok, but the vision was very blurry. I blinked slowly.

And when I didn't see anyone there, I felt like someone stab a dagger right through my heart, twirl it hard, then pull it out and leave me to bleed out.

Memories

After receiving an invitation to Hannah and Thomas' wedding, MC tries to get back to her life, but the demons of her past catch up with her faster than she could have expected.

author's note: previous part, thanks to which you can better understand the situation

warnings: slight mention of mental health issues

HANNAH DONFORT

&

THOMAS MILLER

with full hearts,

joyfully invite you to their wedding

I burned holes in the invitation I received with my eyes. I don't know how much time has passed since I sat on the couch and in my trembling hands I grabbed a card decorated with beautiful floral patterns full of colors. They were different from how I felt now. My world was devoid of any colors when I read the first lines of the invitation. When I reopened old wounds. When I reopened my heart to memories and a weird town called Duskwood.

I swore to myself that I would burn them as soon as I got back from the psychologist. I was so sure it would come easily to me. So why have I been sitting in front of the fireplace for over two hours now, wondering what time the next flight would be?

MC, no.

For five years I have been trying to put my life back together. Forget everything the missing Hannah Donfort case has brought to my life. Because this case has completely and irrevocably destroyed my old life.

After the mine explosion, Richy's funeral, and Jake's loss, I'd become a shadow of myself. When I looked in the mirror, I didn't recognize myself. Soon I began to fight my despair with alcohol and parties. I tried to find my dying need and longing for Jake in other men. But no one compared to him. I didn't even know what he looked like or what he sounded like. So why was I so fucked up that I couldn't forget him?

But after two hard years, the first rays of the sun came. I realized that I needed professional help to move on. I wanted to feel alive again, not just existing. Of course, there were times when in the evenings I would sit staring at a blank wall and reminisce. I was reminiscing about the good times spent with my old friends. All the small talks with Jessy. Jokes with Richy.

But there have been no dark moments for so long. I moved on.

And then, as usual, it had to fucked up. Ceremonial, with fireworks fucked up.

My pointless staring at the cluster of letters was interrupted by the loud vibration of my phone. I snapped out of my trance and checked who had disturbed the storm in my mind.

RYAN: You, me, dinner, wine and a movie?

I sighed heavily, trying to force a smile. This news reminded me that Duskwood had done me nothing good. I won a whole new life in which there was no room for either of them.

MC: You don't have to ask twice!

I clenched my jaw as I stared at the fireplace as flames engulfed the wedding invitation. They burned an old part of me.

* * *

I dressed as quietly as I could so as not to wake the boy who was sound asleep. It was almost three in the morning, and I didn't want to stay at Ryan's. I didn't want to wake up next to him in the morning, have breakfast together, and then say goodbye when we both had to go to work. Why? I told myself that I just wasn't made for relationships. I really wanted to believe it. I didn't want to be a bitch who used others for her own pleasure.

That fucking invitation made me think about him again. Even a moment ago, when I was fucking a boy who is in love with me, I was thinking about someone else. I thought about the black-haired wanted criminal who had hacked my mind as well as my heart.

As I was at the door, I heard his hoarse voice.

– I'll never be anything more to you, will I?

With a heavy heart, I turned to look into his brown eyes, where I saw no hatred. I saw understood pain. Because both Ryan and I knew that in the reflection of his brown irises I was still looking for those wistful blue ones.

* * *

I closed the door to my apartment and without even taking off my coat, I walked towards the living room. I glanced briefly in the mirror, again not recognizing myself. I had just broken another person's heart and my face remained stone and so... distant.

– Fucking Jake. – I spat out my first emotion in a long time. Unfortunately, it was anger.

I reached my hand into the drawer where I kept the medication the psychiatrist had given me. My movements were programmed. I've done it millions of times. Without any emotion, I spilled two white pills and placed them on my tongue. Just as I was about to swallow them, my eyes fell on the bar across the room. And it was only a moment. Impulse.

I rushed over to it and opened it. I pulled out the first bottle of vodka I came across and opened it quickly. I didn't even wonder anymore. I spat out two pills that rolled across the floor, then pressed my lips to the neck of the glass. I furrowed my face, feeling the terrible burning in my throat, but I didn't stop. I kept drinking.

I drank until I stopped feeling a little bit.

Common sense screaming for me to stop was completely silenced. At least until I heard my phone vibrate again. I was ready to explain to Ryan that our relationship, although not official, was a mistake and I had never felt anything for him, but I was confused to see that someone texted me from an unknown number.

UNKNOWN NUMBER: MC?

What the fuck? Who are you and why do you bother me drinking another goodbye I caused?

Yes, do I know you?

Deja vu, right? That's how it all started five years ago.

It's me, Lily. I am sorry for writing so late. Did you get an invite?

My breathing quickened. Lilly Donfort broke the tense silence between us after five years.

I did.

I answered briefly and coldly, but I couldn't help it. I also couldn't get out of the conversation and block the blonde's number, even though common sense told me to. But heart and reason rarely listen to each other.

I know you want nothing to do with us.

No shit sherlock.

But it's really important

I snorted and quickly typed out a reply.

I'm not solving your problems anymore

I know

It's about Jessy

My eyes opened tighter. I didn't even have the strength to pretend that the mention of Jessy hadn't moved me.

She's in really bad condition

MC, I'm begging you, only you can help her

One day, five years ago, Jake was right once again. I let my emotions cloud my judgement. So it was this time.

No matter how much time passed, the traumatic events connected me with Jessy forever. With a fragile, red-haired girl whom I had only ever seen cry at our friend's funeral.

Swallowing another sip of alcohol that hurt my throat painfully, I bought a plane ticket to a dark little town called Duskwood.

Like just imagine awkward shy flustered MC and Jake on their first date, neither of them being used to speaking to each other face to face rather than over the phone. Meanwhile MC’s phone keeps going off from all the messages the Duskwood gang are sending them to the point where MC is slightly concerned something has happened to one of the other members of the group.

But when MC checks their messages, it’s all just the group teasing them and Jake for being so shy and flustered with each other. MC is slightly confused at how the group know how their date is going until they look across the room and sees the Duskwood gang all sitting at a table in bad disguises.

Which of course leads to the Duskwood gang crashing MC and Jake’s date so they can embarrass and tease them further.

Tbh this is mostly just me projecting my need for more Jake x MC fluff along with the Duskwood gang teasing and embarrassing both of them.

I found this on Pinterest and the only thing I can think of now is Jessy (and probably the rest of the Duskwood gang tbh) doing this on MC and Jake’s first date. Like just imagine the chaos and hilarity it would cause.
