i find it very important to note that every main contender for a romantic partner in each stranger things relationship has one original option and then our expectations are subverted (some are more obvious and others are not)

nancy is with steve, but she ends up with jonathan

joyce is with bob, but she ends up with jim

those are the most straightforward ones, but then there are the others that more offered options and one is pressed more but they end up with the other.

max is offered both lucas and dustin, dustin’s side is seen more and slightly more pressed, but she ends up with lucas

we expect robin to end up with steve, but we find out she’s lesbian and will end up with vickie instead

dustin is obsessed with max, but he ends up with suzie

that just leaves mike who… isn’t offered a second option from the original expected endgame partner? every other character is involved in one of these dynamics… and it’s just mike, el, and will remaining

from this pattern it’s suuuuuuper obvious who mike ends up with (wink wink) and i’m going to guess that steve, like el, is going to stay single and/or die. the characters with the most heavy pressure to be relationship centric (especially in s4 where it’s largely what both steve and el are concerned with outside of the whole world bout the end thing) are the ones who end up independent.

i feel like this also is reason to believe steve is going to be killed next season. i hate that and i love him but he regressed in s4, for one, and he also has always been the hero who tries to save the kids by the skin of their teeth, even though it always gets him super beat up every time. i think in s5 he will successfully protect someone or a group of someone’s but will have to sacrifice himself in the process.
