doomed by the narrative sure but what about death of the empire stories. what if the entire structure of society is the one that's doomed. characters living a in death without realizing it yet. it's not just about the tragic hero it's about reality as they know it dragging them down in its death throes.

You know what's really tragic about the character of Rudolf in Elisabeth das Musical? (Besides, y'know... Everything?)
That he's a LOT like Franz Joseph too, at least when he was his age.
They're both under the thumb of one parent, who doesn't allow them to express their own political view. They both feel like intrigue is ruining their lives, and wish they weren't in the restricting position they occupy. And most importantly: they both express a desire to be "soft", instead of the hard and emotionless leader they're drilled to be.
Why then, is there no song, not a single line, where either of them acknowledge that similarity? Elisabeth and Rudolf both sing about how similar they are, why can't Rudolf and FJ?
Because Rudolf doesn't know. How could he know that his own father went through the exact same pressure he is under.. when the pressure was successful in molding him? He never sees that softer side to him.
Franz Joseph might have chosen Elisabeth over his mother in the end, but he internalized her lessons and sees them as truth. He is hard, he is strict, and he doesn't know any other way to be. He doesn't see anything wrong with how he's treating his son. (And in his childhood, how Sophie raised him). He turned out fine, why should Rudolf be different?
So Rudolf had not one, but two parents who should have been able to relate to at least part of his despair. But both failed to be the parent they wished they had. And I don't know if it's better or worse that he never even knew how his father was similar to him, too.
European musicals explained really badly:
Woman keeps seeing her imaginary friend well into adulthood. This ruins lives.
Rich guys new wife is obessed with his previous deceased wife. This is the only thing she and the housekeeper agree on.
Child prodigy realizes that being an adult sucks.
Village boy battles vampires and bisexuality.
Two kids decide that dying is better than enduring their families’ bullshit.
Girl just wants to perform in the Opera, forced into a love triangle where both men suck.
Adolescent girl is under a lot of pressure in her new school, starts talking to a statue in the garden.
Crownprince only has dysfunctional relationships and he is very sad about it.

UwEnjolras Propaganda
This was supposed to be an artblog 100% but I felt the need to propaganda
Ok so Herr Uwe Kröger—an absolute icon in German (language) musicals—played Feuilly and did understudy Enjolras in a 1991 Dutch production of Les Mis. And his Enjolras is mmhmm chef kiss chef kiss chef kiss for the 5 following reasons
1. His Enj is so mean to Grantaire. So, mean. He shoves Grantaire away all the time.
(After the Death of Eponine: Enjolras watches the other people carry Eponine’s body away and goes to land a hand of comfort upon Marius’s shoulder. Grantaire stumbles behind him like his human pet only to be quickly disowned when Enjolras turns and goes ????)
(Shooing Grantaire away again during the barricades)
(Drink with Me: Seriously, pushing Grantaire away before toasting him is really “Enjolras, the believer, disdained this sceptic; and, a sober man himself, scorned this drunkard. He accorded him a little lofty pity”.)
2. He does this meow meow fall during the barricades. I’m not a LM musical expert maybe all Enjolrases meow meow fall but if there’s a meow meow fall it is by natural right people should be notified.
(Somebody is shot, Enj leaps down the barricade. Jean Valjean saves Enjolras’s ass while the latter lands on his ass in startled meow meow fashion. Javert is tied up and observing.)
3. He hands out money during “Paris”. It’s so sweet, he truly cares.
4. (If you are an Elisabeth das Musical fan you’ll get this, if not you can skip to point 5) He grabs Marius like he’s going to “Greif nach der Macht tu es aus Notwehr” him any second.
