sturddlefish weren't supposed to exist. they were supposed to be infertile eggs but instead they hatched?? the last common ancestor between surgeon and paddlefish was 180 million years ago- that's like trying to cross a modern human with a platypus (common ancestor ~170 million years ago). it shouldn't have worked

and because the sturddlefish weren't really genetically all there (many of the eggs didn't make it very far into the development) the ones that hatched looked very different from one another

specifically, it was a cross between the Russian Sturgeon and the American Paddlefish. if you're thinking "they're both fish though" I need you to remember that "fish" is a SHAPE. just like "tree" and "crab" and "ferret" are shapes. except things have been living in the water much, much longer than they've been living on land, so "fish" have had even longer to evolve away from each other. the last time their common ancestor existed, humans and platypi hadn't even branched off from each other

why is everyone losing their shit at the sturddlefish? are we empathizing with another organism that struggles to exist? are we attributing their success to the spiteful union of species from two cold war enemies?

do we love the different phenotypes given their weird as shit genotypes? are we considering trying to breed a human-platypus hybrid?

Tank stats: I think I'll get celestial pearl danios next :3

I now have 7 khuli loaches and 5 shrimp, and theres still plenty space. I would have liked a genuine swarm fish too, but for now i am enarmoured with CPD, and I want to get at least 10 or more. They were very cute. I dunno if there will be space left for a swarm of chili rasbora, but CPD come first.

Thats what the 29g looks RN: gotta buy some taller growing plants for the left side too, i feel like theres just too much empty space.

The loaches are feeding in the middle left foreground.

Fish-uary Day 2: Salmonid (Sockeye Salmon)

Fish-uary Day 2: Salmonid (Sockeye Salmon)

I'm gonna be honest, the fish that go from the ocean to rivers for spawning make me think of all those horror movies where the main couple just want to shack up and stuff just happens. Like Friday the 13th type stuff.

Also, yeah, I drew the salmon's spawning colors. I do what I want. It's the reason I'm drawing mermaids. I'm not the best at animals.

Fish-uary Day 3: Wrasse (Silver Belly Wrasse)

Fish-uary Day 3: Wrasse (Silver Belly Wrasse)

I'm going to be honest, I'm not familiar with wrasses. 😅 I'm more familiar with freshwater fish, as I used to have bettas and currently have loaches. But! Wrasses are quite pretty and very varied. I will definitely be looking into them soon!

Fish-uary Day 4: Surgeonfish (Blue Tang)

Fish-uary Day 4: Surgeonfish (Blue Tang)

Yes, I went with a blue tang because of Dory from Finding Nemo, don't at me. 😂

Fish-uary Day 5: Triggerfish

Fish-uary Day 5: Triggerfish

I struggled a bit with this since triggerfish are such weird looking guys. Kaiea has been a character in my mind for a while, but never really put him to paper. He's a reef triggerfish (or a humuhumunkunukuapua'a).

Fish-uary Day 7: Blowfish/Pufferfish (Pea Pufferfish)

Fish-uary Day 7: Blowfish/Pufferfish (Pea Pufferfish)

I remembered that the Pea Pufferfish was from India and wanted to draw them in Bollywood wear. To those who know more than me because all I really know is references, feel free to rip this apart. I actually have a few friends from India but they never really talk about movies from over there, so I didn't want to assume anything.

So yeah, feel free to just tear me apart for this! 🤣

Fish-uary Day 8 & 9: Seahorse And Ray

Fish-uary Day 8 & 9: Seahorse and Ray

I was a bit under the weather yesterday so I ended up missing the day, but I'm back at it! Don't you worry!

I imagine the two in this piece to be like Marlin and Crush the Surfing the EAC in Finding Nemo. Other than that, I don't really have much else to say. The manta ray girl is a reef manta while the seahorse man is a long-snouted seahorse (or the spiny seahorse in the UK).

Fish-uary Day 10: Symbiotic Relationship (Great White Shark And Remoras)

Fish-uary Day 10: Symbiotic Relationship (Great White Shark and Remoras)

At first I wanted to draw something funny with clownfish and anemones, but I decided to draw a shark and remoras. I wanted to draw Deep Blue in this piece, that's why the mermaid is an older woman, since Deep Blue is in her 60s. She would obviously have had remoras with her every so often and it makes me wonder, if fish could speak to each other, would they remember the remoras or cleaner wrasse or cleaner shrimp that have helped them. The idea sounds adorable to me, and now we're here!

I hope Deep Blue is doing okay out there. She might be one of the largest sharks on record, but she is getting up there in age and people haven't definitively seen her since 2019. I'm going to hope she's good out there.
