The other Five was still lounging in his booth. His face was blank as he gave a long look at their laced fingers before leaning back and giving Five a steel glare. The silent showdown could have dragged on—until a plate slid in front Lila. 

“Your favorite, Love!” said Waiter!Five with a cheerful grin. “Strawberry jam on toast, with a side of baked beans and eggs. Compliments from the Chef.” 

“You tell me if you want more, Love!” shouted Brisket!Five, beaming from the open kitchen.  

“Lila, are you real?” Drunk!Five dragged himself off the wall, stumbling toward their booth. He collapsed beside her, resting his head on her lap and promptly passing out. Lilas started petting his hair, bemused. 

Five could see a vein throb on his double’s face. Booth!Five closed his eyes before steeling himself. “You guys—why you always—You see other Lilas here?” He shot a pointed look at Five, voice hard and full of accusation. 

S4,E6: Thinking about how the scene with Five holding Lila as cried, utterly devastated in the subway after saying goodbye to her children…he runs to her, holds her and accepts her “I hate you for this” because he understands the depth of her pain and how it had to be channeled somewhere. He was the safe place for her when she was the most broken. “I know”….

She clings to him for a long time, he quietly holds her close. And then the camera just zooms out and cuts away. What happened after she finally caught her breath? How long did he hold her like that? She doesn’t run back to Diego, even though he would be enduring the same pain losing their children. No, Lila needs Five. Her interaction with Diego is perfunctory, only saying the kids are safe, not sharing her brokenness and grief with him.

Only Five knows her that deeply. Her words say I hate you but they both know that what lies under those words is raw devastation and mutual understanding that Five is strong enough to hear it and know that she NEEDS him right now and always. Lila knows he’s strong enough to take it- he always has been strong enough for her.

One hint is that when they blink back to Luther’s place they are staring at each other, not the siblings or their surroundings as one would expect. The camera cuts away and then back to them, still staring at each other. It says so much about what the camera didn’t show.

…Do you know if anyone has written a fic about the moments here, between these two scenes?

With the way time behaves in the subway, they could have been gone for a few minutes or a few years.

Lila needed Five, not Diego. It was Five who hugged and comforted her, who she allowed herself to be vulnerable in front of. I still don't understand how anyone can say she chose Diego after that scene. That scene is honestly the best thing the final episode gave us. You can see the depth of their bond, their vulnerability and closeness to each other. Five was her safe place for so long and once again she ended up in his arms while experiencing such a very heartbreaking moment.

And in the meantime… a lot of things could have happened!

Honestly, I actually wrote one of those fanfictions. It's the exact moment before the comeback. Well, I wrote it two days after the finale, so my emotions were a little wild. And I would have written the scene differently today. But here it is:

Just do the maths and listen to reason (and above all the heart, please).

I just realized that Lila and Diego only knew each other for like 20 days before they got married because of her getting pregnant. Add in the after S3 timeskip and the subway stuff, Lila has technically spent more time with Five than Diego in canon considering she was with him 24/7 during the subway adventures.

I'm not sure how long Lila was in the asylum with Diego (I think in the show they say he's been there for over seventy days). But otherwise, definitely yes. They had known each other for a very short time when she became pregnant. Although she has been with him for over six years, the question is how much time they were really together.

But she was with Five for literally seven years in a row, not much can compare to that. Five knew her absolutely differently and more deeply than her husband. There is also the question of how much Diego really knew her. Because I feel like he never really understood her...

Just a few observations about the scenes with Diego and Lila…

Lila opens up to Diego and tells him about her family, he kisses her right after and Lila slaps him. Lila then looks really hurt that he did it in her weak moment, but then she kisses him. I get the feeling from that scene that she was afraid she had compromised her mission by her reaction and wanted to make amends.

And honestly? In the scene where she's in bed with Diego, I don't find her expression happy.

At Luther and Sloane's wedding, Lila watches them and smiles.

"That used to be us." "We were never like that. Gross."

Lila looks hurt again and slaps him and he likes it more. My feeling again? Lila actually longed for romance. And even when they have their little moment, Lila doesn't look happy, she doesn't smile.

After the wedding, Lila smiles when she sees how drunk Five is.

Another slap after Diego locked her up to protect her. And another apologetic kiss from her? Why do I get the feeling she was afraid that if she did something that really showed just how angry she was, she'd be afraid Diego would leave her to it all alone with the baby?

I know, maybe I'm overthinking this… but honestly… show me one scene where Lila is actually happy just being in Diego's company and not enjoying the situation, the action, the humor of Five or anyone else, and there's no s e x involved?

Okay, maybe a dance scene…

So...asking the fandom the most important question. Does it appear as though Lila nodded to Five imperfectively? Not sure if I have just been staring at it too long but it looks like she nodded as if to say 'I love you.' 'I forgive you.' 'I will miss you...' A sense of understanding mingled with the love in her eyes. The tear slowly falling was for them. The lost of her children. The raw emotion she released while in his arms had already been unleashed. Think these tears were over not being able to be with each other anymore. The futility of the situation and the understandable fear of the unknown.

How many times do you think they woke up like this and felt ashamed of their proximity until it became something ordinary?

Five's reaction to Diego touching and kissing Lila on the cheek is really everything to me. I can't even describe it like, his frequent sighs?? his eyes not knowing where to look?? the way he can't sit still?? this man was literally tweaking 😭😭😭

Can't believe I'm still seeing people who say Five cheated on Dolores and their "relationship" was healthier and more meaningful than what he had with Lila.

Yall be saying anything just to hate on fivelila atp, because no one can convince me that any of you ever cared that much about a MANNEQUIN, that Five returned to the store back in s1.

one year, two months and four days

Lila

It feels like I'm going crazy. The platforms are blurring into each other in my mind, I can't remember how many of them I've seen already, I can't navigate my memories anymore. Five is still trying to rely on the map, but I don't think it makes any sense since we've been coming back to the same stations over and over again a few times; or maybe they were different and I just didn't notice… I found this weird (as if anything in this shithole could be normal) old-fashioned radio. It only gets one station with only one song playing 24/7 and it only works if you hang it right under the ceiling. But it is the best thing in this purgatory. It plays music, FUCKING REAL MUSIC. If Five is right, it's been at least a year since we got lost. And since then, it is the first time I can listen to something other than his boring lectures on the art of apocalypse survival or the subway announcements delivered by that hellish robotic voice in an encrypted language; sometimes I'm not sure which pisses me off more.

Spent the whole night listening to this song, it made me think of Gracie and the twins. Looked like even this old man was glad to find something that reminded him of a real, normal life. We had to move on and leave the radio behind. If we see it again we'll realize we are going in circles, and anyway I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t work in any other timeline. We danced. Like that time at Luther’s wedding. Didn’t expect Five to be able to do that sober actually, which makes me think I’m not the only one going bananas here. I don’t know why I did it, why I keep pretending that things aren’t as bad as they are. I know Five’s right, fuck he’s right most of the time. But I can’t just admit that we’re stuck, that we’re completely lost, that I’ve come a lot further than I thought, that it’s all my fault. He’s never directly blamed me for any of it, but we both know the truth. And I can feel that we’re almost home, we’re so close.

It has to be that way.

okay there are a lot of words 😭 i've never written anything like this before so i hope this isn't too bad lol, i just wanted to give these sketches more context and yes they are highly inspired by harry and hermione's dance scene in deathly hallows (i love that scene so much). you can think of it as Lila's internal monologue or maybe she has some kind of journal(?) where she writes her thoughts while being in the subway to keep track of events. i have a LOT of headcanons and ideas for more fivelila sketches like this so maybe i'll make a series out of this if you're interested!!

100% agree on this! I equally dislike it when people blindly hate on both Five/Lila or Diego. Even though I don't like diegolila and don't think they're a good match for each other, it isn't characters' fault. I think there's no one to blame at all, because SO many things led to Five and Lila getting together, you can't just say that it happened simply because Lila is a "bad wife", Five is a "homewrecker" or Diego is a "selfish husband". Their situation isn't black and white, and that's what I love about it the most tbh.

Both Lila and Diego tried their best in that marriage and tried to do what they thought was right. They both had a very traumatic childhood and no examples of healthy husband/wife, parent/kid relationships so it was obvious that they won't be able to built a home full of understanding and love, especially when they only knew each other for a few months when Lila got pregnant. (Which is why it's weird to me that many antis say writers ruined diegolila, bc for me it was clear that people like them are not made for this kind of life).

I could literally write a full essay on what was wrong with diegolila's relationship, why they don't match each other's expectations how they could've fixed it (they all need therapy 😭) and how it all leads back to their childhood trauma.

In episode 4x03 of TUA, it feels like Diego, Lila, and Five already feel the Fivelila vibes. Diego is all, "it's because he's in the CIA" and Lila insists it's just work, but the seed is there for all of them. Lila wants to be alone with Five doing that recon, it's cute.

But actually it's Diego that is most useful there. Fivelila shippers love to shit on Diego, maybe so Lila's actions go down easier but really they're all messy people also trying their best.

We don't have to shit on Diego to support Fivelila. He makes mistakes and he can be so so dumb but he's also caring and helpful (and my fave). They're all deeply flawed, deeply beautiful people and that's like the thesis of the show and why the ending goes down so poorly. I'm sorry Diegolila people shit on Fivelila, but I'm team family orgy so I will not shit on any sibling or any ship, so there.
