grocery shopping is the inevitable weekly battle of adulthood, where you fight other adults for the best fruits, vegetables, dairy and meat to make yourself around 18 meals until you have to go back and do it again. except that this week, you’re accompanied by a 6 foot tall lion beastman and he thinks that this is nonsense.
a/n: 4th fic out of 10!! i'd like to formally apologise for yesterday's angst, it was 100% unintended, i promise TT^TT so have leona and you going to the supermarket and chilling exclude whichever products you don't consume btw!!
edit: reader is briefly referred to with she/her pronouns by an old man talking to leona, just skimmy that part ;-; no pronouns used anywhere else!!

grocery shopping is the inevitable weekly battle of adulthood, where you fight other adults for the best fruits, vegetables, dairy and meat to make yourself around 18 meals until you have to go back and do it again. except that this week, you’re accompanied by a 6 foot tall lion beastman and he thinks that this is nonsense.
“remind me why we’re even doing this, herbivore?”
“well,” you start, “we’re doing this because i need groceries to cook food, and you wanted a distraction from your ‘repetitive schedule’. so today you’re gonna help me with getting groceries or so help me, i'm going to leave you here and make you figure out a way back to the college alone.”
“well, you don’t gotta tell me twice. where we headed to first?”
“well, i need new plates, grim broke a few the day before, and that’s near the biscuits and other snack items section so we can head there, see if there’s anything new.” you push the trolley as you hum, opening your phone to find the checklist you’d made last night. behind you, you can hear leona’s flip flops on the tiled floor, and you can feel his breath an inch above your ear as he looks over your shoulder to see the list you made.
“find something interesting?”
“yeah. the hell you need tile sealant for?”
“to fill the gaps between the tiles in the kitchen, duh,” you roll your eyes as you pick out a set of plastic and glass plates, placing them into the trolley. “grab that set for me, yeah?”
“where to next?”
“hmm, let’s check out the snacks section, see if there’s something we can grab… nothing too expensive though, the plates are already a nightmare of a hole-burner in my budget.”
“you buy whatever you need,” leona yawns. “i’ll pay for the rest.”
“seriously? this isn’t even your food though.”
“i got cash, you want it or not?”
“fair enough.” as you leave the cart with him to check out sauces and spices, leona picks up chicken and beef noodles and tosses them into the cart, along with silently grabbing some packets of the more expensive chips you mentioned you liked and couldn’t afford on a regular basis.
“hey. where’d these come from?” you cock an eyebrow as you look at the trolley, putting in the tomato sauce and the various other spice bottles you were holding precariously in your hand.
“these are mine, duh.” he said, emulating your tone from a few minutes ago. you laughed as you sorted through the packets, humming as you smiled.
“we might need another trolley soon, we’ve still got the fruits and vegetables and meat sections to go to, plus i’ve got to stock up on pulses and dairy products. we can do one last round to grab whatever’s interesting after that.”
“sure. what fruits are you buying?”
“whatever looks good to buy and is kind of on sale. let’s go, you’re pushing the trolley.”
“why am i pushing the trolley?”
“because you’re too rich to know how to tie the fruit packets under 10 seconds.”
“what does that even mean?”
“i’ll show you, i’ll show you.”
after tying the packets tightly, you apparently had to get them weighed and priced, so leona stood with the trolley (again), watching couples and families with young children walk past him, not noticing the older man with a smaller trolley approach him.
“pardon me,” he smiled as he grabbed the dragonfruit behind leona, putting in a plastic bag like you had, except he couldn’t tie it all that fast, and asked leona to tie it for him instead. “thank you, young man,” he responded, not recognising leona. “here with a missus or a lover?”
“not exactly,” leona responded honestly, glancing to the right to see your figure smiling and chatting with a young child.
“ah, somewhere there but not quite, eh? i understand. good luck to you, whoever she is, she’d be lucky to have a kind man like yourself.” with that, the old man leaves, leaving leona a bit confused, but also slightly hopeful.
“hey,” you call as you place the fruits and vegetables you got weighed carefully in the trolley. “all we’ve gotta do is hit the dairy section, and then we can- leona?” you paused as the beastman inches towards you and quickly nuzzles your neck. “hey, what happened?”
“honestly, i have no fuckin’ clue, but i liked it.”
“tell me about it?”
“nah. maybe later.” with that, he intertwines his fingers with yours, and you’re left wondering where exactly your not-relationship-relationship stands.
get you a man so in love with you he goes grocery shopping with you and accidentally meets god (?) who validates his post-therapy improvement and gives him enough hope that you'll say yes when he asks you out.
