As a baby gay who watched ANTM religiously, I naturally found my way into Rich Juzwiak’s work. His ANTM recaps were as synonymous with the show as aspiring models crying as their hair was chemically fried. I began following his blog and journalism career. I found myself agreeing with pretty much everything he said while learning about queer culture - a specifically niche education I would not have received anywhere else (or had to fumble by myself in the dark to find). But most importantly, his media commentary made me trust his taste entirely while helping me cultivate tastes of my own for anything that was high camp, unashamedly gay or ridiculous, anything to do with child pageants, or simply just… Kate Bush.

Through his writing I found new favorite movies: Mysterious Skin, Control, and Living Dolls, just to name a few. In a weird way, a lot of what I like is based on just trying to catch up to him. I learned about navigating sexual health in the gay world through his frank and honest discussions about sex and sexuality, how to be a good ally for any cause, and why Madonna is so fucking exhausting.

And possibly the greatest gift given to the LGBTQ+ community of all: without Rich introducing RuPaul to the phrase, there would be no “Sissy That Walk”
