Three Things

Three Things

Imagine: You and Gamora watching the stars late at night while listening to Peter's music together

~

After it being the third time you heard a bang, you finally decided to get up and confront whoever was making noise this late at night. You walked into the base of Milano and were shocked to see Gamora already beat you to it.

“You were woken up by that noise too?” You sleepily slurred your words. Gamora looked up at you quickly, startled at your entrance the same way you were when you noticed her. “Oh, did I wake you?” That’s when you realized it wasn’t one of the boys being annoying, it was her. Wondering why she was up this late -or maybe she woke up early, you weren’t quite sure- you sat down next to her and watched as she fiddled with the blade in her hands.

“Well, yeah… But it’s alright,” The glow of the stars and other fancy lights from outside made the features of her face shine in a way that made you feel warm. “Why are you up at this time?” You whispered softly, trying not to bother her or wake anyone else up.

Gamora looked around the room, anywhere but your eyes, really… You weren’t sure if it was to dodge confrontation or if she simply didn’t hear you. To avoid yourself from embarrassment, you didn’t repeat yourself incase she did hear and it was the former option in your head.

It was a silence of small breaths and beating hearts before Gamora decided to speak up. “A lot has happened,” You looked at her, “How so?” Gamora pondered for a moment.

“My father kills me in order to kill half of the universe, I come back from 2014 to learn that my sister isn’t as evil as I thought she was… And I’m apparently dating this guy named Peter,” You went silent, she had a fair point. Everything has been screwed up for the past five years. Peter was dusted away with Drax, Mantis and Groot, so you were stuck with Nebula and Rocket for the time being. You got to know Pepper Potts and Tony Stark, learned how much Earth-616 has changed over the years you’ve been exploring the universe.

“And that’s not even the end of it,” She finished, pulling you out of your thoughts. “I guess you’re right, but you don’t have to go back to the way the other Gamora was living. Or you can, but we understand that you just jumped eight-nine years into the future and we’re all kinda shaken at the moment,” Gamora nodded softly, it was obvious she listened to what you were saying, it just took her a while to process it. That’s when you got an idea.

Standing up, you tiptoed your way through to the pilot seats of the ship and grabbed the walkman and headset from Peter’s chair and came back to sit with a confused Gamora. You handed her the headphones and charaded for her to put them on her head. You searched the walkman for the play button, also confused. After five years on Earth with Tony’s advanced technology, you needed to relearn how to use something you grew up with.

Finally, your memory refreshed and the music made its way to Gamora’s ears. You looked up as at the green girl the cassette tape chittered. She softly smiled at you, this was your kinda battle music.

It was nice, the quiet of Gamora’s breath and the faint music you heard coming from the cheap Headset, the stars that lit up the atmosphere of the ship along with Gamora’s beauty. And that’s when something hit you for the third time tonight, you were falling for your friend’s ex. The daughter of Thanos herself, the girl who time travelled her way into the future to help murder half the universe then changed her mind. Your best friend’s sister.

God, you were even more screwed now.

One (of many reasons) I love about these movies is exactly that they fall out of this 'typical sci-fi trope', under which I'd count the Avengers movies f.e. (no doubt tho, they are amazing too and esp. the first one is iconic and my personal fav)

But I totally get your thoughts on this. I love the variety of worlds, people and alien creatures and there are soo many tiny details which you only notice when rewatching the movies. (I must've watched Vol. 1 & 2 at least 50 times now...)

And all the different colors and space sceneries are just gorgeous as well as the worldbuilding, so props to the team of artists and animators working on this. Cinematically, the movies are a blast!

(And Peter's a cinnamon roll, a bit dorky though but he has a good heart and it shows <3)

You know what ELSE I just realized about Guardians of the Galaxy?

Earth is Peter’s homeworld. And in a typical sci-fi movie, he’d be fighting to protect the Earth, in the same way that the typical threat in an American-made movie is to New York or L.A., or in a British movie/show it’s usually London. The whole “your country/your world is the most important thing” trope, because the intended audience is presumed to have the biggest investment in their country or their most iconic city or their own planet.

But in GotG, it’s not! It never is. In the first movie, he’s fighting for Xandar, a planet that WE’VE certainly never heard of and even Peter has no emotional investment to protect, other than because it’s a world full of people who deserve to live without being threatened or killed. In the second movie, Earth is just one of many planets that are all equally threatened (and shown as such).

There is absolutely nothing wrong with fighting to protect your homeworld, but Peter is fighting to protect everybody, and I love that about him. ❤ ❤ ❤

For the record, I really don’t think Peter has that much emotional investment in Earth anymore, aside from nostalgia, because he totally could go back now that he has his own ship and he doesn’t. While he might still describe himself as Terran, he obviously is a citizen of the galaxy much more than of Earth. I just love that the movies aren’t framed as “Peter, Earthman of Earth, saves Earth from aliens.”

Incidentally, because sci-fi rarely does this, I also really love that Xandar is explicitly shown as being a planet of many different-looking people who all consider Xandar their home and Xandarian their nationality. The fence with the funky eyebrows describes himself as Xandarian, but the human-looking people are obviously also Xandarian, and the bright pink-skinned people also appear to be. Sci-fi is so often “one planet, one race”, or it has people identify with their ancestral homeworld no matter where they live – e.g. one is always Vulcan even if one is a third-generation Earth resident. But I love that Xandar is shown to be a world of many different races of people who are all united in a common national identity.
