Okay so I LOVE the headcanon of Herbert being taken in by krolock because of whatever reason. Now I have this picture of little baby vampire Herbert sitting by the stack and reading books with krolock. Someone pls draw this.
I like the headcanons I’ve seen about Herbert being Krolock’s biological son—growing up as a vampire, or being turned—but when I first watched Tanz, I wondered if he was adopted. Maybe he was a new vampire whose sire had died or abandoned him and Krolock took him under his wing, and eventually they end up thinking of one another as family. It might have been a gradual process, where Krolock was reluctant to accept Herbert’s company at first but something about how lost he looks reminds Krolock of how he felt the same when he was newly turned, though he was twice Herbert’s years at the time—maybe his sire left him, too—and he agrees, surprised that he can still feel sympathy. Or it might have been easier, with Herbert’s cheerful enthusiasm and attachments to bright colors, music, and dance somehow reminding Krolock of everything fleeting and “human” he struggles to hold onto. It’s been ages since since Krolock truly lost himself in anything, but Herbert lets himself be swept away by poetry, legends, and the other worlds within the tomes of the castle library. Studying alone there becomes more infrequent for Krolock. The two of them spend many nights overlooking the texts on French language and as Herbert’s mastery of it grows, Krolock finds he can’t suppress beaming with pride at his progress.
These are just random ideas, but basically I feel like there’s potential to explore “found family but with vampires” before the musical’s story ever starts.
