Guy Davis - Tumblr Posts
I watched GDT's Pinocchio last night, and I strongly enjoyed it. Excellent storytelling, and visually it is simply glorious.
The dogfish from this film is a gnarly piece of work, and probably one of my favourite takes on the monster. The more unconventional features, such as the siphon-like nostrils, whiskers and long, anglerfish fins are charmingly weird.
I really like Guy Davis' art in general. I first found out about him after I began researching Pacific Rim's concept art. The art team on that film absoloutely COOKED while making the Kaiju, and the film's designs have provided a fairly significant deal of inspiration for me as a creature scribbler.
I like talking a lot about creature designs. Perhaps more than necessary, but it is really undervalued IMHO, as is the artistry put into films in general. This isn't stuff that should be taken for granted, and it honestly sucks that it is in many cases. To make a film, especially one driven strongly by visuals, a director's ability to communicate and collaborate with artists is highly important.
On the topic of Del Toro, I should really get around to watching his other films.

BAT EARS BRADY!
Nobody talks about this cool guy enough. He's a scrapped Kaiju design from Pacific Rim (designs by Guy Davis and Simon Lee). Gives me serious Megalon vibes, I think they'd be best friends.
Yes, his name is BAT EARS BRADY. There are a couple of other early freaks like Himantura, Meathead (who's tail made it in via Otachi) and Karloff (who briefly appears in the movie)

A sculpt was made, albeit unfinished (?) without wings.
