I have a theory!

I think The Gman worked at Black Mesa during The Incident, and saw Gordon Freeman's capabilities firsthand, and his employers sent him back in time, or some sci-fi nonsense, to give Gordon his offer at the end of the first game.

I haven't fully thought this through, so if any one can think of more things to back this up, it would be appreciated.
