Breakfast In Bed

It was the jarring cold that woke you up.

Howl ran deliciously warm, and ever since he had insisted on sleeping in the same bed (“It’ll save space! A-and you said you get cold in the night, so being in the same bed will help.”), you had gotten used to the heat of the small bed and close proximity that Howl provided. You were used to being able to snuggle deeper into his chest when you got cold, used to the feeling of his arms tighten around you as you shifted impossibly closer.

Now, however, Howl was nowhere to be found when you half-woke, shivering. His side (if you could call it that, as his bed wasn’t made for two people) was barely warm and still had a dip where he had slept. So Howl didn’t leave too long ago, you decided, curling into a ball where he had been.

Your eyes drifted lazily around Howl’s bedroom. It was one of the nicest you had seen, despite the clutter, filled with sparkling charms, books, ingredients for spells, and things you didn’t know the names of. It was dimly-lit, and despite being cold, it gave off a cozy feeling that somehow always made you sleepy. You turned your face into one of Howl’s pillows, inhaling the faint scent of candle wax, brass, and something earthy that you couldn’t place but sent a warm feeling blooming in your cheeks. You kept thinking of how nice it was, how cozy and safe you felt in his bed, and how the faint rocking of Howl’s castle almost had you asleep again when he came back.

You watched as the door opened slowly, pushed ajar by Howl, who was focused on balancing a tray of food. His tongue was poking out of the side of his mouth, and when he finally closed the door with his foot, he broke into his signature, wide-eyed smile.

“You’re awake!” He said, holding up the tray triumphantly. “I made breakfast.”

“I thought I heard Calcifer grumbling,” you muttered, snuggling deeper under the covers, smiling at the thought of the fire demon and Howl making breakfast together.

Howl placed the tray of food carefully on a stack of books next to his bed, and leaned down to gently kiss your forehead. “Well, good morning then. I’m sorry if we woke you, my love.”

You simply shook your head and sat up, Howl’s hand a comforting presence on your arm. He fluffed up a pillow behind you and eased you back onto it. He smiled at you again, clearly excited, and then gave you the tray to hold onto. The smell of crisp bacon, fried eggs, and something sweet wafted into your nose, and you glanced down. To your delight, it was a full breakfast of eggs, bacon, and pancakes topped with maple syrup and fresh butter. Your stomach growled at the sight, and you were about to dig in when you stopped.

“What’re you going to eat?” You asked Howl, who was in the middle of taking his pants off and letting his sleep shirt (which he had tucked into his pants) fall to his mid-thigh. He blinked at you, his bright blue eyes flashing cheekily.

“I was thinking we could share,” Howl offered. His stomach growled as he said that, and you just giggled, letting Howl climb under the covers and snuggle up to your legs, one arm behind your back, and the other hugging your leg. He sighed contentedly into your hip, trying to shove himself as close to you as physically possible. You watched as he got comfortable, forgetting about the food and instead choosing to stare at your lover. His black hair spilled over the pillows, effortlessly beautiful, and you smiled. The slope of his nose, his arched eyebrows, the way his lips curled into a smile when you wound a lock of his hair around your finger - it was all perfect to you.

“You’re beautiful, Howl,” you whispered, letting his hair fall back into place.

He chuckled. “Thank you, my love, but our food is getting cold. I don’t know about you, but I don’t like cold eggs.”

You rolled your eyes and started eating, cutting up pieces of bacon and pancakes and then sticking them with your fork to feed Howl. He hummed every time and stuck his tongue out for more, his eyes scrunched closed.

“Do you want the last bite?” You asked, swinging a forkful of pancake, egg, and bacon over his mouth. Howl shook his head, so you shrugged and ate the last bite with glee. Every meal that Howl made was delicious, and telling him so made him smile. It was always smiling with you both. You couldn’t help it, his laugh and smile were infectious, and just thinking of it made you break into a grin of your own.

You moved the tray off of your lap and back onto Howl’s stack of books on magic, and he released your leg so that you could slide back under the duvet. When you were both fully snuggled up under the covers, Howl whispered something, a spell, you recognized faintly, and soon you heard wind whistling through the bedroom.

“What are you doing?” You asked incredulously, shifting closer to Howl. “You’re gonna make me even colder.”

Howl simply held you tighter, his legs entangling with yours, and said, “I thought you’d like this.”

You stopped trying to burrow into his chest and waited, one eye peeking above the edge of the duvet cautiously. The only thing you heard for a minute was the muffled sound of your heartbeats. Then you heard the bells and hanging charms that Howl kept in his room, tinkling and chiming softly as the wind passed through them. It was a magical sound, one that made you gasp, as normally they only clinked together in the night when the castle rocked too far to one side. But now, they sang in harmony, one created by Howl just for you.

“I love it,” you whispered, scooting up so that you could cup his face and look at him at the same time. He hummed, nuzzling into your hand before giving your palm a tender kiss. It was such a simple action, but it always managed to make your face get hot without hesitation.

You both knew each other’s blush-triggers, and it just so happened that gentle, friendly kisses anywhere but Howl’s lips were his. So in retaliation, you pushed Howl’s bangs back and went to kiss his forehead. Even giving him a peck on the corner of his mouth sent him stumbling over his words and redder than Calcifer.

He was always flamboyant with his declarations of love for you - bouquets of roses, fireworks on your birthday, massive presents for the holidays - so subtle gestures got him blushing hard. The thought that you were able to make Howl Pendragon, revered wizard, blush was enough to get your insides feeling soft and gooey.

Howl did go red at the gesture, just as you predicted. As you went to give him a second kiss, right between his eyebrows, he turned his face upwards, and your lips landed on his. It took you by surprise, Howl’s soft lips pressing firmly against yours, but soon you were kissing him back with just as much passion and emotion.

“I love you,” you whispered when you both broke away, giddy and breathless. Howl’s hands were clasped at the base of your neck, his thumbs stroking little patterns into your skin.

“I love you more,” he whispered back.

“We should probably-” you started, but were cut off by Howl.

“No!” He cried, letting go of you to burrow under the covers dramatically. “I’m not getting up. I want to stay in bed with you.”

“Howl, please,” you begged, stifling laughter.

“No! If you truly love me, you’ll stay in bed with me.” You could feel him pouting against your stomach.

You combed your hands through his hair, twirling one inky lock of his hair around your finger. “We can take a bath together, if you want.”

Howl’s demeanor changed instantly. He threw back the covers, scrambling to get out of bed. “Well, why didn’t you say so? Calcifer, run some hot water for a bath!”

You giggled, watching Howl sprint into the bathroom as you crawled out of bed, slipping your feet into house shoes. It was going to be a long morning, you thought, but you’d take a thousand long mornings, so long as they were spent with Howl.

The Space Between Us

The Space Between Us

Pairing: Howl Pendragon x Reader (You)

Genre: Angst, Hurt/Comfort

Word Count: -2,500 words

Synopsis: After feeling like an outsider in Howl’s castle, you decide to leave and start a new life elsewhere. When Howl finds you after weeks of searching, unresolved feelings and deep conversations arise, forcing you to choose between your new life and the one you left behind.

The Space Between Us

The atmosphere in the castle had shifted. At first, it was subtle—small things you could shrug off. But as days passed, the feeling of being on the outside grew heavier.

Calcifer’s crackling laughter filled the hearth as he teased Markl about some spell gone wrong, their playful banter echoing through the kitchen. Sophie would often flit in and out, her smile bright as she checked on Howl or helped Markl with his studies. Everything seemed to fit perfectly—like they had become this seamless family. And then, there was you, standing in the corner, watching it all unfold.

You stirred the soup absentmindedly, your mind miles away. Every laugh that wasn’t shared with you, every whispered conversation you weren’t part of, felt like another wall going up between you and them. It was a ridiculous feeling—this was their home, and you had chosen to be here. But lately, it felt like you were nothing more than a guest overstaying your welcome.

You wanted to join in, to feel like you belonged, but every time you opened your mouth, you felt out of place. It seemed so effortless for them. Howl and Sophie had a natural rhythm, their bond evident in the smallest gestures. Calcifer adored Sophie, and Markl looked up to Howl as if he were his world. Where did that leave you?

In the kitchen, the feeling of distance only grew. You caught the way Howl looked at Sophie—there was a fondness there, but not in the way that cut deeply. No, that wasn’t the source of your jealousy. It was the way he gravitated toward her, how easily they laughed together, how it felt like they shared a world you weren’t a part of. You were simply… there.

There was no resolution that night. No sudden gesture or words of comfort from Howl or anyone else. The tension in your chest remained as you ate in silence, your thoughts louder than any conversation happening at the table. As the evening went on, you excused yourself early, retreating to your room with a heaviness that refused to lift.

The Space Between Us

That’s when the idea started to form—leaving. It wasn’t impulsive; it had been brewing in your mind for some time now. You were tired of feeling like an outsider in the place that was supposed to be your home.

One night, when everyone was asleep, you began packing in silence. Your hands shook slightly as you folded your clothes, but your heart was resolute. You couldn’t stay here any longer. The moving castle wasn’t where you belonged. Not anymore.

Calcifer had been suspicious for days, his flames dimming every time you walked by. He’d asked if you were alright, but you only smiled at him, saying you were fine. But now, as your bag was halfway full, Calcifer noticed. His flames flickered in a nervous dance.

"You’re really going to leave, aren’t you?" His voice crackled quietly, barely more than a whisper of fire.

You paused, feeling guilt twist in your gut. "It’s better this way, Calcifer. I don’t belong here anymore."

"That’s not true," he protested, his flames flaring brighter. "You’re part of this place, part of us."

You shook your head, not trusting yourself to speak. If you stayed a moment longer, you’d break. You’d crumble under the weight of their kindness and the hope that things could somehow go back to how they were before Sophie arrived.

Markl must have overheard the quiet exchange, for suddenly, there was a knock on your door, and his small figure appeared in the doorway, his wide eyes filled with hurt. "Y/N… don’t go."

Tears pricked at the back of your eyes, but you forced a smile. "I have to, Markl. You’re all going to be okay without me."

"But I’m not okay without you," he argued, his voice cracking with emotion.

You crossed the room and knelt down, cupping his face with one hand. "You’ll be fine, Markl. Howl and Sophie… they’ll take care of you."

He didn’t look convinced, and his lower lip trembled. "What about you? Who’s going to take care of you?"

That nearly broke you, but you swallowed the lump in your throat and pressed a kiss to the top of his head. "I’ll be alright. I promise."

The Space Between Us

The next morning, you were gone.

Calcifer and Markl felt it immediately—the absence was like a gaping hole in the castle. When Howl and Sophie woke to find your room empty, an eerie silence settled over them all. Howl was the first to speak, his voice low and filled with disbelief.

"She’s gone," he murmured, his hand clenched tightly around the back of a chair. "Why didn’t I see it coming?"

Markl’s tears spilled over, and Calcifer’s flames dimmed with guilt, both of them feeling as if they had somehow failed to stop you.

Howl’s usual calm was nowhere to be found as he paced the length of the room, his frustration mounting. "Why didn’t she say anything?"

Sophie stood quietly, her eyes soft with understanding. She didn’t need to say anything. She knew the quiet hurt that had been growing in you for weeks.

"I’ll find her," Howl said, his voice hard with determination. "I’ll bring her back."

Without waiting for an answer, Howl set out, Markl at his side, the two of them scouring the nearby towns. Days turned into weeks with no sign of you. It was as if you had vanished without a trace.

The Space Between Us

Howl’s heart slammed in his chest as he neared the entrance of the small, homely restaurant. He had been searching for so long that he almost couldn’t believe it when he saw you standing there, your hair tied back in a loose bun, an apron slung over your shoulders. The morning fog drifted lazily around the quiet town, but all he could focus on was you.

There you were—alive and seemingly content.

He stepped forward, his breath caught in his throat. You turned around at the sound of his approach, and your eyes met his. For a brief second, the world around you both seemed to blur, leaving only the two of you.

"Y/N..." His voice was soft, filled with a mixture of disbelief and relief.

You froze, your chest tightening as you took in the sight of him. Howl, disheveled and tired, his eyes searching yours with a vulnerability you rarely saw from him. It was clear that he had been looking for you for a long time, but you didn’t move. You didn’t speak. You simply stared at him, your heart conflicted between the life you had built and the one you had left behind.

"You found me," you finally said, your voice barely above a whisper.

Howl stepped closer, his eyes never leaving yours. "I never stopped looking."

For a long moment, neither of you spoke. The tension between you was palpable, and you could feel your heart race as his presence stirred old feelings you had tried to bury.

"Why did you leave?" Howl’s voice cracked with emotion, his expression raw. "You didn’t even give me a chance to—"

"Because I didn’t belong there," you interrupted, your tone sharper than you intended. "Everyone fit together so perfectly—Sophie, Markl, even Calcifer. They all have their place with you. But me? I was just... there. Watching from the sidelines."

Howl frowned, his brows furrowing in confusion. "You were never just watching, Y/N. You’ve always been part of us. I never meant to—"

"You never meant to," you repeated with a bitter laugh, stepping back from him. "I know. But it doesn’t change the fact that I felt like I was slowly disappearing in that castle. You and Sophie… you two—"

Howl’s eyes widened as he quickly shook his head. "It’s not like that. Sophie and I—she’s not—"

"Stop," you said, holding up your hand to cut him off. "I’m not asking for an explanation. I’m not blaming her either. But I saw how well she fit into your life, into the castle, into everything you and Markl and Calcifer had built. And I just… didn’t."

The words hurt to say out loud, but it was the truth you had been holding onto for so long. The truth that made you leave.

Howl took another step forward, his hand reaching for yours, but you pulled back before he could touch you. His face fell, frustration and helplessness washing over him. "Please. Come back with me. We can fix this."

You shook your head, your heart clenching painfully. "I can’t, Howl. I can’t go back to feeling like I’m always on the outside, like I’m always chasing after something that’s just out of reach."

He looked at you, eyes pleading. "But I need you. I didn’t realize how much until you were gone. You belong with us—with me."

Your chest tightened at his words, but you forced yourself to stay firm. "You don’t need me, Howl. You have Sophie. You have your family."

Howl’s frustration bubbled to the surface as he ran a hand through his messy hair, his voice strained. "This isn’t about Sophie. It’s about us. It’s about what I want. And I want you to come home."

His words struck a chord in you, but you were resolute. Home. That word didn’t mean the same thing to you anymore. This restaurant, this small town—it was starting to feel more like home than the castle ever had. Here, you were your own person. You were building a life for yourself that didn’t revolve around fitting into someone else’s world.

"I am home," you said softly, your eyes locking with his. "I’ve found something here, Howl. I’ve found something that’s mine."

He stared at you, disbelief and hurt clouding his expression. "So, that’s it? You’re choosing this place over us? Over me?"

Your heart ached at the pain in his voice, but you held your ground. "I’m choosing what’s best for me. And right now, that means staying here."

For a long moment, Howl stood in silence, his face a mixture of anger, confusion, and something deeper—something that mirrored the ache in your own heart.

He looked like he wanted to argue, to say something that would change your mind. But he didn’t. He didn’t have the words. Instead, he let out a sharp breath and took a step back, the distance between you feeling wider than ever.

"Fine," he muttered, his jaw tight. "But don’t expect me to stop trying."

You watched as he turned on his heel, his cloak billowing behind him as he walked away, disappearing into the morning fog. The weight of his absence settled heavily in your chest, but you didn’t chase after him.

This time, you were choosing yourself.

The Space Between Us

Days passed, and though Howl’s visit haunted your thoughts, you carried on with your life in the town. The restaurant became your sanctuary, and the steady rhythm of your days provided a comfort you hadn’t realized you needed. You had carved out a space for yourself here, and while there were moments of doubt, you knew in your heart that you had made the right decision.

Calcifer’s warmth and Markl’s laughter still echoed in your memories, but they felt distant now—like a past you had gently set aside.

And then, every so often, when you least expected it, you would catch sight of a familiar shadow in the distance. You would feel the pull of magic in the air—the faintest trace of Howl’s presence lingering, watching from afar.

But he didn’t come any closer.

And neither did you.

You both had made your choices.

My Heart Gone Missing [Chapter 1]

Fandom: Studio Ghibli (Howl's Moving Castle)

Pairing: Friendship! Howl x GN! Reader

Warnings: None

“Howl!” you waved happily to your blond haired companion. It had been awhile since you had seen each other, school being let out for summer vacation and all that.

“Y/N!” his face brightened upon seeing your waving figure before he ran over to you.

“How are you?” you asked excitedly as you bounced around your best friend.

“I’ve been well.” Howl replied, but without meeting his bright blue eyes with your (e/c) ones. You frowned when you noticed he didn’t make eye contact, but brushed it off as one of his weird quirks. “How about you?” this time he turned around to make eye contact.

“I’ve been good. Not much has happened because ‘you’re not allowed to practice magic outside of school’.” You mocked. “Oh, I got a cape though.” You spun around and let your (favorite color) cape flutter behind you.

“I noticed.” Howl smiled.

“And?” you prompted after you stopped your spinning.

Howl’s face broke into a grin, “it’s awesome.” You clapped your hands together happily, “you should get a cape too, then we’d be matching.”

“Maybe.” Howl mused as he let his sentence trail off, “but aren’t capes a little dangerous?”

“Oh pooh.” You stuck out your tongue and scrunched your face up in distaste, “you’re no fun. Capes are awesome.”

Howl laughed before he put his hands up in a surrendering manner, “okay, if you say so.”

“I know so.” You retorted with your arms crossed in a superior manner. The warning bell rang and the two of you ran into the school to avoid getting marked tardy on your first day back.

...

Someone yanked you into an abandoned corridor. You jumped at the sudden contact and attempted to attack the person who had yanked you down the dark hall. “Y/N, calm down, it’s just me.” You calmed down upon hearing Howl’s voice, but immediately turned to him.

“Howl, that wasn’t funny!” you scolded, “what are you even doing down here?”

Howl’s blue eyes widened in a panic before he clamped his hand over your mouth, “shh, you know we’re not supposed to be down here, I just want to tell you something.”

“Why couldn’t it wait?” you asked curiously.

“I’m running away.” He answered seriously. Time seemed to freeze for a moment as your brain processed what he had just said.

“I’m sorry, what?” you asked in disbelief, “Howl, I know you’re pretty much the prodigy and most talented wizard of our class, but that doesn’t mean you can just run away.”

“Don’t tell me you don’t have a suspicion.” Howl deadpanned as he looked straight into your (e/c) eyes.

“What do you mean?” you asked slowly.

“You don’t have a suspicion that those in power will want to stay in power? You don’t have a suspicion that Madame Suliman might be up to something?” he asked in a hushed tone.

You looked out to the brightly lit corridor right next to you, “not really.” You answered quietly. “Yeah, the world is in a monarchy pretty much everywhere, but not all monarchies are bad, right?”

Howl looked at you as if you had just sprouted wings from your head, “haven’t you been paying attention to history?” Howl demanded in a hushed whisper, “monarchies always fail, and it’s always witches and wizards who get the brunt of that failure!”

“Howl, you may be insanely talented, but I’m not. There’s no way I can just run away from the academy without finishing my education. I’m not that good.”

“Okay, I see.” Howl agreed in a deflated manner as his head hung low, “I was going to ask you to run away with me, but it looks like you already jumped the bullet.”

Your eyes widened in disbelief, “I’m sorry Howl. I don’t mean any harm to you. Really. You heard my reasoning though.” You placed a consoling hand on his arm, “go. Follow your dreams. When you decide to run, I’ll cover for you as long as I can.”

Howl turned to look at you, “thanks Y/N, it really means a lot to me.” He smiled warmly, which you promptly returned.

“Of course Howl, what are best friends for?” you asked as you slung an arm around his shoulder, “tell me when you’re leaving okay. Then I can prepare myself.”

“Two days.” Howl replied immediately.

You balked at the sudden prospect that your best friend was leaving in two days. “Okay. Two days.” You agreed before darting back out into the lighted corridor.

Howl's Moving Castle

Howl's Moving Castle

Tis a well known fact that there are MANY people who are yet to read 'Howl's moving castle' as in the book by Diana.

Howl's Moving Castle

So,

Howl's Moving Castle

If you think that the movie howl has a complex personality, you should definitely read the book! He might be a bit of a jerk scratch that,he is one nevertheless I came to accept the way his character was written.

Howl's Moving Castle

As much as I love the studio ghibli adaptation , the book by diana wynne jones is on another level. I must say that both 'Castle in the air' and 'House of many ways' were as amazing as the first!

-Signing off-

My love,

I had an overwhelmingly positive response to the last letter I sent, and I wanted to thank you. Sometimes I have to remind myself of the same thing as I told you the other day, but I'm honored that you loved it so much.

I hope to hear from you soon, my dear. I'm glad to see you still want to hear from me, too.

We'll talk soon. Until then, I hope your day is wonderful, sweetheart.

My dearest love,

Things have been a little less than perfect these last couple days for me, and I was doing some thinking about it. And it was the kind of thinking I thought I'd share with you all.

I understand that things seem to get...overwhelming sometimes. Believe me, with the amount of spells I've been making and all the running people are asking of me, and events I've been invited to, I understand. And sometimes you simply feel bad that you cant keep up the energy to keep doing all these things. It gets tiring after a while.

I also know, darling, that everyone feels this way from time to time. You're not alone. Even if all the things you're doing are fun, you're still allowed to need a day off to relax.

If you're feeling stressed or overwhelmed today, I ask you to join me on my day off today--I don't have much that needs done, so most of the day is going to be me doing things I enjoy. I believe I'll take the house out for a picnic in the field, or maybe I'll just stay cooped up in my room and read a book. I have no exact plan, and that's what days off are for.

I hope things get easier for you soon, sweetheart. Please remember to drink some water today.

Your love,

My muse, my darling—

How has your day been? Please, come tell me about it. I’d love it if you’d come lay with me and we can chat for a while…I may have enchanted a musical instrument scattered somewhere in my room to play for us while we get to sit. I have plenty of blankets since it seems to be getting colder here in Ingary. join me, will you?

Darling dearest,

I have to apologize for not being online as much as I would have like dot be the last few days—life somehow keeps getting busier and busier, and the time I'm not working, I'm usually sleeping or taking an hour to myself. In good news, yesterday was an easier day and I spent the evening baking cookies with Markl! With the holidays here (or coming soon, depending on what you celebrate), I thought it was a good time to start baking. Calcifer wasn't happy, but we let him have the egg shells.

I hope you'll write soon! I miss talking to you.

Hello, darling,

I know I'm usually the one you come to for advice or someone to lean on, but I have to ask—no wizard is perfect 100% of the time. No human is, it's what makes us human. I just so happened to have a very, very long day, and I wanted to know if you'd be willing to have a quiet night in with me today? I usually love to plan extravagant things for us to do, but today I just need some rest. Everything is too loud and bright today, honestly.

I wish you the best and I hope you'll join me. I made dinner, if that persuades you, and I have leftover cookies that Markl made the other day (that are quite good, actually).

Sending you all my love,

Good morning, my dear!

I, unfortunately, woke up very late today, but it's the weekend so I don't mind much. I was invited to a party last night, was out late, and did a lot of dancing. It was a lot of fun, and I had many friends who I chatted with throughout the night. It was actually a birthday party, which made things even better because it was a lot of mutual friends I'd never met before and got to make several new friends.

Half of this is gibberish because I'm still very tired, but I did want to let you know how I was doing. I do wish I could have danced with you at least once.

How was your night? I do hope it was fun, or at the least, peaceful.

Enjoy your day (or whatever is left of it), love.

Yours,

Reblogging the old posts from a writer of howl fiction I dearly admire.

Reading them after so long makes it feel like a millennia.

dearest heart,

its been too long since i've checked in, i apologize for that. as much as i appreciate how much i get to work with him, prince justin (and, by proxy, the king) are certainly loading me with quite a bit of work and it's barely left me time to write to you, lately. i promise, sophie is keeping an eye on me and telling me to go to bed when i need to.

how have you been? like i said, its been far too long since we've had a chance to catch up. have you got anything interesting going on, or anything you're looking forward to?

all my best (and love),

I'm pretty sure I would have the same reaction had I watched the movie first...

Since I read the series and then watched the movie, I was gifted with Miyazaki-San's stunning, sweetheart Howl and Hisaishi-san's wonderful ethereal music.

Howl no Ugoku Shiro was definitely worth both reading the books and watching.(Though Diana's Howl is a major jerk and douche)

Diana wynne's Writing is absolutely fantastic to read!

I would recommend reading both castle in the air and house of many ways after the first book.

reading howl’s moving castle after watching the movie… man wtf 😭 this is NOT how the movie went 😩😭
