Your husband, who doesn’t have a lot of knowledge about fixing things but wants to save money and feel useful - more useful than just reaching the highest shelf of the cupboard and mowing the lawn - vows to fix whatever the problem is with the pipes. What’s wrong with them? He doesn’t know but is determined to find out. He crams himself into the cupboard under the sink, his muffled grunts of annoyance follow every loud thud, which you can only assume is his head hitting the underside of the sink, and you can’t help but laugh quietly at the scene reminding you of Alice, too big for the White Rabbit’s house.
His outfit speaks of his commitment to the role of handyman: tank top and jeans, the denim getting streaked with grease as he unconsciously wipes his fingers on them.
Eventually, he retreats from the cupboard, frustrated and pouting, a smudge of grease along his cheekbone from his fingers. You hand him a rag for his dirty hands, and he sighs, looking down at you with sorry eyes. He promised to fix it, but it’s not in his repertoire. On your toes, you reach to kiss his clean cheek. He tried, and that’s all that matters. He hums in reluctant agreement, eyeing the sink repeatedly as if it did him wrong.
