Crazy to me that Herobrine is older than sculk. Sculk is, from a metagame perspective, far younger than a lot of things in the game. It's younger than horses. Than villages. Than crossbows. Herobrine is younger than spider jockeys, but not by much.

But in-game? Sculk must be ancient, there are no traces of the civilization it once destroyed. Maybe it was born, or brought here, from the mistakes of an ancient civilization. Perhaps an ancient cosmonaut carried back a parasite from beyond the veil, and their world became faced with destruction and ruin, and could never return to the home that was now a grave.

Maybe it's Herobrine's hometown. Maybe he goes back to pay respects sometimes.
