Hollow Ecologies

Just as an FYI, this post starts with "i saw snek" and ends with "so, Soul Society's menos milking porn era--'

The other day I got super distracted by a super cute snake, whom I named Hyourinmaru. I then immediately watched Hyourinmaru have an anxiety spiral about a planter that was rolling around in the wind, which he tried to do battle with twice. 😅

Then last night I was pulling a cover over my patio furniture, and a garter snake fell out. The cover is black, so I think it was nice and warm. But this snake was very astonished by the whole thing and kept trying to climb straight up the covering, so I named him Zabimaru, because:

I was looking up what kind of snake Hyourinmaru was, and:

Are the herpetologists OKAY??? WHY WAS THAT THE ASSUMPTION.

I feel like any time I bring this up it's in the tags of some post that will never be found again, but I love thinking about the particular ways Hollow ecologies are understudied/not well understood in Soul Society, and I feel like there's definitely an edition of the Academy textbook that talks about how Menos suck milk from cows by night.

Like, maybe there's some weird conflation of leeches and really small Gillian (Menos Mini) and somehow milk gets involved and it's this whole thing. Nowaways it's probably considered a little backwater to believe this, or to entertain the notion, but at various points in Soul Society's recent history:

The 12th received actual money to do a study on Menos milking behaviors (under the pretense that it would be better than Menos eating whole souls, right?)

There was a moral panic about how tits-out you were allowed to be with your shihakushou, with the vague insinuation that if you dressed improperly the Menos would come for you

The idea resulted in some really incredible porn that started as kind of an underground avant gardist art movement out of the Academy but soon also made its way to high society (resulting in the Soul Society equivalent of Hokusai's tentacle porn).
