I LOVE THE WAY YOU WRITE - Tumblr Posts

sorry if this is random but!!! i’m interested about your repost on the gentle surgery post, about everything basically

i agree that magnificent nine’s plot is a bit all over the place (especially after the green team episode), which is why i’m really only sticking around for the medicspy dynamic. though i am looking forward to seeing how ht will close off the series

and i’d love to see the rant, not only because i just really want to see someone talk about it, but i’d like to see what you think!

Ok so! The reason I asked is because I've been trying to find a way to express my thoughts on the Mag Nine without sounding rude or a hater. I want to be able to genuinely critic the series without coming across as a "attacking the creator" or something dumb like that.

The Magnificent Nine is why I started shipping Gentle Surgery in the first place! I never thought about Medic and Spys dynamic before this!

And as someone who is relevantly new to the tf2 fandom (about a year) and has not played the game I'm more familiar with the comics and fan content on tumblr.

So it's kinda alien for me to see fan content that's not inherently lgbtq or at-least , not made by a queer creator.

So (from what I know) of Hoovytube is that he is writing a tf2 story from a non queer perspective. Which while there is nothing wrong with that- I can enjoy a story without obvious lgbtq themes or characters (I've been doing this for years) it's just a completely different side of the fandom that I never really seen that was here since the beginning.

I actually was heavily invested in the series and was intrigued by the premise. When I first found the series, the last episode was Call E for Medic! And the next one (Meet the tenth class) was premiering within the same month.

I believe my initial understanding of the premise was that Medic was feeling undervalued by his team so he decides to see how they preform without him. And Spy decided to help as well. Then from there things escalated from there.

Then we get the next episodes and now we are introduced to the Hustler who is a really fun concept for an antagonist! He's a balance between all of the classes, steals their weapons to overpower them and take their resources! He's the one merc who actually acts very serious (kinda like an Izzy Hands/ only human in a muppet movie way). He feels like he could be like that one villain who thinks he's the only sane person in the room and is very manipulative. Like he's always playing devils advocate.

Then we get the plot point of Medic and Spy deciding to "screw it" and run away. To me the run away plot is an inherently queer/ gay coded plot line so I interpreted as such. I thought that would be a fun way to continue the story and I was hyped.

I was also thinking:

-How would the Red Team react? Will they resent Spy and Medic for leaving/ faking their deaths?

-Where are Spy and Medic gonna go now if they do run away? What will they do now? How far are they are going to go before they regret their decision?

-I had this whole narrative building in my head of where the series was going:

-Spy and Medic run away and through their time alone together they learn (after a while) how they both still care about the members of Red Team. They then regret what happens and decide that they can't just leave their team to face the Hustler alone.

-We'd also get more of the Blu and Reds pov as they were both scammed by the Hustler seeing how they cope with that loss and maybe even consider working together to take down the Hustler only for their egos to get in the way. (You know because the Blu teams Engi being another villain in this series and how he parallels Medic and his need of feeling appreciated but is going about it way worse by purposely sabotaging his team)

-then Medic and Spy return but find that the Red Team hasn't fully forgiven them for leaving. I felt like we'd get this big confrontational moment between them before the climax. Especially with Sniper being the only support class left, I can see him being the most mad/ feeling betrayed.

-Then with the climax the Hustler is here to fight again but with now both Spy and Medic are they able to stop him. I was picturing something like: The Hustler thinks he's won and is about to relish his victory only to get stabbed by- guess what?- An Uberized Spy! That's Right An Uber Spy! And if that fails Bonesaw!

-Then the team comes together once more and after celebrating Medic has the courage to talk about why this all happened and they reconcile.

Then the actual episodes released:

-I was heavily disappointed and not because of my own expectations but because of the way that the writing has declined

I don't mind when a story goes in a different direction, normally that can actually improve the story by having new information revealed making you think about it in a different way. Kinda like how in Ace Attorney you are lead to think that murder happened this way only to find another clue making you think that your client might actually be the murder.

However, the direction that Hoovy takes is very strange and doesn't make sense.

Going in I thought this was solely a Medic Character Study (based on how the player feels when playing him) and him dealing with the consequences of leaving the team.

However there is another plot that's been (apparently) building up towards the beginning:

That plot is the other teams beyond Red and Blu that are also fighting. Yes in HTs version of TF2 there is also a Brown, Yellow and Green Team. Early on, episodes would cut to small backstory scene with these other teams. I never really cared about the other teams nor understood their relevance to the plot beyond connecting to the Hustlers backstory. They were comedic relief at best.

So you could see my confusion when they suddenly became relevant with Green Team kid napping/ keeping Medic and Spy at gun point .That's right the moment we are about to follow up on the run away plot they get caught instead. And do to the way the episode is paced it makes it seem like Medic and Spy instantly regret their actions and want to turn around to help Red team. That happened way to fast. It made feel like something was missing. What happened in Medic or Spys mind that made them want to go back? It felt as though only 2 minutes ago they were talking about how much they hated Red team and now they are just going back? All this build up in between episodes and they just turn around?

Then what was the point of that! Why have Green Team or those other characters if they were immediately going back for Red?!

The episode seemed to be so much faster and shorter too. I feel that some of the older episodes allow for more character moments and time to breathe. While in the more recent episodes seem like they are being rushed and skipping over key character moments for the sake of getting to the next plot point.

In the last couple of episodes it's been feeling more focused on the politics and war of the other teams and Less on Medic if it weren't for 2 moments in them (which are brief). Like when Medic finally reunited with Heavy and the rest of the team it feels like they forgive him too easily. I get that they are desperate for any help/ good news but I think it'd be more realistic for some of the other Mercs to be mad at Medic and Spy but no it's completely skipped over and they act like they never left. They also only acknowledge that Medic was gone no one mentioned missing Spy or glad that he's back too.

It makes it feel like we are skipping over his character arc to make room for the climax. I thought that since Medic and Spy being back would make it so the rest of the team had the courage to try fighting the Hustler but no... they are being told by the boss to summon Merasmus. Huh...

I don't hate the wizard it just doesn't feel thematic for him to be the one force they need to stop the Hustler. Unless it's a red herring and Medic will be the one to get the finale blow, then this is just anticlimactic.

With the those episodes, I become aware of how flawed this series has been so far. Even early on their was some weird jokes and choices that never really vibed with me. One choice that threw me off was the lack of lore characters like Administrator and Miss Pauling . It doesn't impact the story it's just you'd think a story involving the Mercs wanting to quit and run away it would get at least Admins attention.

One that is currently bothering me is that their is too many plot points and characters especially with the addition of the teams beyond Red and Blu. And what's worse is that because the other teams early on seem so irrelevant to the story that when they do around episode 7 it comes across unexpected or out of nowhere.

To Me Hoovy has all these ideas that are too ambitious for a tf2 fan series. He clearly wants to tell this grand epic narrative that evolves implementing Polish culture, History and 60s politics of that time period. He brings in all these other teams and characters to represent different political factions/ extremes of the time but it just doesn't work. He wants to make his version of TF2 where it is more historically accurate.

He tries to do this while adding a compelling character narrative. But it just doesn't work. None of those elements blend well together. It just makes for confusing plot points and weird tone shifts.

Hoovy seems like a dedicated and passionate person who made this series to get this story out there. He's been working on it since he was 14 (he's currently 20) and I respect for the fact that he's able to animate and get his ideas out there.

However, with the episodes not doing well on YouTube he felt the need to produce them faster. And with him getting closer to finishing the series, he's been taking less and less time to polish his writing leading to the poorer pacing. That to me is sad because he's putting views and numbers over the quality of episodes for the last few installments.

If Hoovy had focused only on Medic, Spy, Red Vs Blu Team and defeating Hustler, It would be way more of a coherent story.

I actually have more thoughts but I've felt like I've gone ontoo long. Can you tell I wanted to talk about this series for a while?

Felix is so relentless in his ways, sitting with such purpose atop your bed as you scramble to pack for your trip. The luggage rests propped open at the foot of the bed, piled high with neatly folded clothes and bags of cosmetics. And Felix doesn’t preoccupy himself with any form of activity- he simply watches you, analyzing your every movement like he’s studying you.

“I don’t know how the weather’s going to be over there,” you remark, pulling your phone out your back pocket to conduct a quick google search.

And Felix swallows nervously, his eyes scanning over your nimble fingers as you type.

“High 60’s,” he says casually. “But you normally run warmer, so I wouldn’t pack too much.”

“Really?” You retort, tossing your phone on the bed as you think over his answer. “I was going to pack a couple long-sleeved t-shirts.”

“Do that black one,” Felix chimes in from where he’s sitting. “With the cutout at the front. That one always looks really pretty on you.”

Your eyes shift momentarily to his seated figure, pondering the shirt he speaks of.

Or the sports bra, rather, the small strip of fabric serving as a go-to to earn yourself free drinks at the club. Just a few inches in length, riding up the sides when you so much as lift your arms, the circle cutout in the front providing a generous view of your cleavage.

“Ew, no,” you retort. “That one’s not fit for a vacation.”

“Yeah it is,” Felix says with a light chuckle. “Besides, you’re going to the beach, it’s not like you won’t be showing skin.”

“I dunno,” you reply, refolding a shirt on the top of the stack. “I might just do a big t-shirt and some shorts.”

“What?” Felix says a little too passionately. “It’s the beach. You have to get tanned, and show off when you can. Wear that little black bikini you took swimming the other day.”

“That one is for the privacy of my own pool, not a public beach, Felix.”

He shrugs lightly, thinking back to the sight of you wading in the still water of the swimming pool alongside him, your breasts practically falling out of the little string top and complementing an erotic view of your lower half swallowing the little fabric bottoms.

“What else are you packing?” Felix inquires, sitting up to peer inside your suitcase.

“Couple shorts, a few tank tops and maybe a dress for when we hit the club.”

“The red one?” Felix says quickly. “Good call, that one looks really good on you. I mean, not to make it weird or anything. But last time we went out, it was like half the bar was staring at you. I don’t blame them.”

You furrow your eyebrows together, a small chuckle escaping your lips as he nods eagerly.

“Yeah, the red one,” you reaffirm. “I think we’ll only hit the bars the first night we’re there.”

“Take lots of pictures,” Felix says, folding his arms behind his head leisurely. “I want to see all the outfits you wear.”

And you know the drill very well already, Felix often pressing you to send quick mirror snaps of your short dresses, beach attire or gym outfits. He plays it off as an interest in your fashion, but you know he’s just interested in the way your curves hug every inch of the clothing, leaving little to the imagination as you flaunt your assets, with Felix’s curiosity piqued every time.

Felix is naive enough to think you genuinely don't know his calculated schemes. But you don’t miss the way he shoves a pillow against the tent in his crotch when you’re in a short skirt, or how he purposely grazes his hips against yours when you bend over. He’s embarrassingly obsessed with you, your figure, your body, your skin, the sweet smell of your perfume when you pass him by. Thoughts of you plague his mind at all hours of the day, on your knees for him, your mouth taking his cock to the hilt and the erotic view of your breasts pushed up against his lanky figure hovering over yours.

“I don’t know,” you voice with a sigh, occupying the spot beside Felix as you throw yourself onto the white duvet. “I feel like I’m second-guessing everything I’m packing.”

“Don’t,” Felix emphasizes, rolling over to climb over you. “It’s all good stuff, you’ll look amazing.”

And you’re giggling beneath him as his lips suddenly find your neck, taking your flesh between his teeth to suck a bruise on the column of your neck.

“Felix, stop!” You say between laughter, not doing much to push him away, either.

“I’m gonna give you a hickey here and then you can show it off in your little dress.”

“Felix!”

He resumes his sucking motions, lips latching around your neck to form a dark purple bruise, giggling against your skin when he feels you gasp beneath him.

To anyone else, the sight would be provocative, your best friend’s lips all over your skin and your hands pinned at your sides, with every intention to cover you in marks. But oddly enough it’s a normal occurrence between the two of you, Felix getting riled up at the sensation of climbing over you and completely flustering you. It’s the same sensation he’ll later jerk himself off to, imagining he was inside of you the whole time, fucking you like a boyfriend would.

And it’s a phenomenon you’ve gotten used to at this point, Felix’s perverted tendencies making themself known early on in your friendship and never fully dissipating. Always under the guise of “friends”, always defending it with his platonic relationship to you, that these are completely normal occurrences that friends always do. And though you know it to be untrue, you don’t stop him, admittedly amused at the way Felix is so obsessed with you. He’s easy to read, and he does a terrible job at covering his tracks. It’s a little pathetic, really, but it’s amusing, nonetheless. Perhaps one day you’ll give him a hand or indulge him in a quick fuck and watch him go absolutely insane.

“That’s good,” Felix says, as he pulls away to examine his work. The bruise is a robust shade of purple, placed inconveniently for everybody to see for the entirety of your trip.

“Felix,” you groan, sitting up to examine it in the mirror across from you. “This thing is huge.”

“You love it,” he says with a smile, pulling back to crawl off of you.

“In your dreams,” you retort, slinging your legs over the side of the bed. “I’m gonna go take a shower.”

“I’ll come,” Felix says, standing up and pulling off his t-shirt.

“Felix, we talked about this-”

“Please,” he begs with an exaggerated pout. “It’s so hot and I’m so sweaty.”

You sigh frustratedly, gesturing to the bathroom and rolling your eyes in annoyance. “Go start the shower,” you say to him. “I need to grab a change of clothes.”

And he grins mischievously, taking purposeful strides into the bathroom as you shake your head.

You pull a change of clothes from your drawer- a t-shirt, a new pair of shorts. Panties- which seem to be your last pair. Except you did laundry just two days ago, and you should have several pairs still, even when accounting for the ones you’ve already packed.

You fish around the drawers desperately, searching high and low- and they’re missing. Which means you’ll require a trip to the mall before your vacation this week.

And Felix watches in amusement through the crack in the door, smirking at the knowledge that half of your panties are stowed away in the drawer of his nightstand. Ones he runs his fingers along and imagines ripping them off of you, ones that aid him in stroking his cock to pictures of you at night. Outfit snaps, gym photos.

It’s filthy, and he knows it. But under his devious guise of “just friends”, anything goes.
