The choices you make will determine your alliances, unveil hidden truths, and unlock the full extent of your powers. As the oldest out of the group, Harlowe is the de facto leader of the nephilim, a role that he doesn't take lightly. While he may be cold at first, Harlowe is loyal and severely protective of his loved ones.

Contra Spem Spiro is a 18+ sci-fi, dystopian romance interactive fiction that follows the MC as you fight to survive an alien invasion and the repercussions of trying to live in a doomed society. Your story starts off like any other. 

Your life was normal, until it wasn’t. Two years after the invasion ravaged the Earth, you’re struggling to find purpose. The lonely life of struggle and survival is not for you. You’d promised yourself that if there was ever a zombie apocalypse, or if climate change caused the planet to move towards uninhabitable, you’d end it. That was then. That was when hypotheticals existed. This is reality, and instead of dying, you lived against all odds and continue to do so. 

Why? You don’t know. You wake up fortunate to be alive. Everything between the sunrise and sunset is white noise. Insignificant.

Now, your normal shifts again. Now, you’re making a month’s long journey with a group of strangers, their faces unfamiliar except for the exhaustion in their eyes.

They have a plan, and you’re along for the ride. After all, still water is an infested one. You learned that the hard way.

This is not a story of heroes and villains, or of good triumphing over evil. This is a story of people: the kinds worth living for, and the kinds you wish were dead. This story, your story, is one of survival.

Customize your MC! Play as male, female, or nonbinary. You can determine their appearance and personality, updating it (voluntarily and, uh, involuntarily) as the story progresses. Are they charming or intimidating? Do they use their fists to solve problems, or their keen mind and deductive reasoning? Become an asset to your group. The perfect team has balance. Choose your MC’s strengths and weaknesses; develop them as you see fit. Always up for a laugh, C isn’t interested in the doom and gloom. Their adulthood barely began before the invasion happened, meaning they’re still clinging to what were supposed to be the “best years of my life.” That doesn’t mean they lack competence. C is damn good with technology, (and stick and poke tattoos!), able to rig up electricity seemingly from their back pocket. They take their friendships seriously, and will be the first to defend you when trouble comes knocking. Oh, and did I mention they used to work in a bakery? “Fuck, I miss baked bread.”

*C is demisexual, so although MC can flirt with them from the beginning, it takes a high friendship for them to reciprocate any romantic/sexual feelings.

♡ Veronica Moiarty/Vincent Moiarty

The Insomniatic Anti-Hero (F/M)

Veronica is 5′9. Vincent is 6′0.

Age: 25

Even if V wanted to tell you about themselves, they couldn’t. Having been attacked by an alien those short years ago, they woke up with no memory and a nasty scar on their arm. Others marveled at how they were able to survive such an injury, but V would say that death felt like the better option. Jaded, vengeful, and hot-headed, V isn’t known for their kind words or sensitivity. In fact, who needs enemies when V is there with a scathing comment and a proverbial shove into the mud? You want to hate them, you should hate them. Of course, you don’t.

“What about this conversation makes you think I want to talk to you?”

*Because of V’s canon romantic interest in Z, if you romance V only, they will slowly shift their romantic affection from Z to MC in a realistic manner. The two will always be close friends, but when romancing V alone, MC will eventually become the sole source of their interest.

The Quiet, Cat-Like Con Artist (F/M)

F!Z is 5′10. M!Z is 6′1.

Age: 24

Quiet, stealthy, and quick to lash out when cornered, Z prefers the shadows to the spotlight. Why say many words when few will suffice? They made a living from con-to-con, using subterfuge and their knack for making themselves invisible to outwit their marks. Z dislikes violence as a whole and is known to have a weak stomach, though they’ll deny being an empath if asked. Z slouches too much, eats too little, and can be found staring off into the void or engrossed in their sketchbook. You’re drawn to their mystery, their light, melodic voice, and their dry humor.  

“Can you all keep it down? You’re interrupting my sulking.”  

*Z is the most oblivious of the romance options. Seriously, it’s like flirting with a brick wall. Romancing Z isn’t for the impatient, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. If romancing Z only, you will notice that V will take longer to warm up to MC because of their jealousy. In time, they will get over their feelings for Z and will come to support their relationship.

It doesn’t take 20/20 vision to see that V has feelings for Z. It would be a bit embarrassing to watch if Z wasn’t known to be heartbreakingly oblivious. It’s like Z hasn’t looked in a mirror a day in their life. Anyways, if romancing V is a boss-fight, then Z is the final boss in a game’s 3 part saga. So you need reinforcements.

MC can flirt with both V and Z. MC will have to begin a romantic/sexual fling with V first, admit their feelings for Z, and encourage V to come clean and admit their own. The two of you can then pull Z into your relationship. Three emotionally stunted peas in a pod. Isn’t it beautiful? ♡

Sloane Addams [He/Him or She/Her] — Wolf-Shifter — A wolf-shifter without a pack, disgraced in the deepest way possible, they don’t seem to be that overjoyed at the prospect of attending Aurelian Academy, but that doesn’t mean they’re not set on proving themself and finding a pack once more.

Blake Herrera [He/Him or She/Her] — Vampire-Hybrid — Your best friend (and potential FWB). With a flirtatious air, a rebellious spirit, and an affinity at finding trouble, they’re a vampire that takes a bit to get used to.

Reginald/Regina Presley [He/Him or She/Her] — Human — A scholarship student to Aurelian Academy; the first of many that may be attending. With a thirst for knowledge, along with a devil-may-care attitude, they’ll try their best to fit in. Of course, that’s easier said than done. The Sovereign's Ring is an 18+ dark fantasy game filled with drama and romance.

When the Empress dies without issue, you play as the youngest out of four possible successors to the throne.

Sieghardt is your second brother and Captain of the Nibelhiem Heath Knights. Unlike Alberich, Sieghardt is a like ghost, often occupying the shadows in your memory. He’s a quiet and stoic person, but is loyal to your brother Alberich above all else. There is a weight he carries with him that no one knows. 

Eirik Nibel Neaera | He/Him | 23 | Male

Eirik is your only cousin, the son of your Father's twin brother. He still holds your family responsible for the death of his father and will do anything to avenge him. He's arrogant and hot-headed, but he's also resourceful. Despite being a jerk, he inspires great loyalty in the people who follow him.

Sir Griffin (Finn) Brynhildr | He/him | 19 | Male

A young boy from your childhood. He was a good friend- maybe even your first love, but you two have drifted apart over the years. Now he's a Nibelhiem Heath Knight and heir to a Great House. His passion is second to none and charges into every situation with enthusiastic sincerity- sometimes to his own disadvantage.  He hates Sieghardt with every fibre of his being.

Lady Linnet Brynhildr | She/Her | 24 | Female

Linnet is Finn's older sister and childhood friend of your older brothers. She's a part of the renowned Shield Maidens and harbors a flame for Sieghardt, but due to her family's ambitions, nothing becomes of it. Above all else, she wishes to serve her country and fulfill her duties- but must it come at the cost of her own happiness?

A young Prince from the neighboring country of Brigid. Thea is one of seven children in line for the throne. She was a good friend and pen pal- maybe even your first love, but she stopped answering your letters one day. Her short stature and demure demeanor causes most people to underestimate her crafty nature.

The Wizard Rothbart's assistant. She's a woman of many questions and little answers. A flirtatious and beautiful woman, who is easy to like, but hard to trust. There’s something about her sincerity that makes you uneasy. Her smiles never truly meet her eyes.

Helios is a great sorcerer of unknown origins with great knowledge of the occult and the Wastes. Aside from that, no one knows who the fuck this person is.

Simon/Simone [f/m] Task Force Leader. Human Simon/Simone comes from a wealthy family with a long history of government service and civil partnerships. Simon/Simone is somewhat of a black sheep and is estranged from a large portion of their family. After a bout of teenage rebellion, Simon/Simone find themselves enlisted in the military to ‘correct’ their behaviour. However, with a penchant for leadership and a tactician's mind, they are recruited by a strange, secretive organisation with questionable goals.

After two more victims of 'The Bay Slasher' are found discarded on the bay, Simon/Simone drives themselves and their team into town, on orders from their mysterious higher-ups, ready to put away this killer for good. But cases such as these are never simple, and even more so with a far too clever and far too perceptive P.I. hot on their heels.

Rain [non-binary] The Mediator. Supernatural type; Pixie Rain grew up in a very wet biome of the world associated with fairies, pixies and elementals. After a great conflict, Rain was practically herded into the arms of a greater power, who guided them into the arms of Simon/Simone, who became their new leader.

Taj [f/m] The Infiltrator. Supernatural type: Qita Taj is part of an ever-shrinking community hidden well in the Egyptian underbellies. Qita are a humanoid cat race native to Egypt and were once revered by humans at the dawn of their civilisation. However, that reverence began to fizzle out when a greater power, deciding their people had become too powerful,

After a great conflict, Taj is captured and 'recruited' to join a mysterious organisation dedicating themselves to maintaining balance. Taj is ultimately led to Simon/Simone and becomes the final member of their specialised team. Showing great resistance at first, eventually, Taj learns to accept and respect Simon/Simone, so when their leader declares they are to travel to the backwater town of Albach Bay, well... Taj comes along. Though not without reluctance.

Nazu/Naera [f/m] Supernatural type: Demon Nazu/Naera is a demon prince/princess from Hael. During a terrible conflict, their great power was muzzled as punishment for their part in the war. They've been seeking the people responsible so they can regain the power they lost.

Their search has lasted more than a decade, but now... Now they find themselves in a small, human town where sin oozes from every shadow, beckoning every passer-by to partake in its debauchery. To top it off? They can hear their power singing to them. It's close. Heh... They might even end up liking it here.

Umbra [f/m] Supernatural type: ??? Umbra is an anomaly. Nothing about them is real. None of it should exist. Every facet of their being has been strung together out of sheer will and barely held together by a thread. One wrong touch and they may fall apart, like unravelling a ball of yarn or pulling apart a puppet on a string.

So, why? Why do they exist? Simple.

Umbra (male): Tall and lean build with black shoulder-length hair that contrasts against his pale, almost ghostly skin. He tends to have dark circles under his equally black eyes, as well as a deep scar cut through his left brow. His clothing usually consists of a black leather jacket, black pants and black combat boots.

Progress Report 10/2/2024

Hello all! I hope you're having a good week so far. For my part, things have been calming down a bit, and I've been enjoying the small extra free time developing the upcoming scenes.

They are turning out well, as I've progressed about 1/5 of the way as I'm finishing up one of the father's scenes, with 3 more to go, along with Rachael's specialization scenes.

I'd like to go a little more in depth on these scenes, as they will basically flesh out the MC's personal development going forward. I wanted to give some hints at how the MC's S.T.E.M. ability will generally progress going forward. To this end, all of the scenes have a combat oriented focus, but I also wanted to focus on giving a bit more story and lore to the fathers and the organizations they occupy.

For MC's that have chosen to follow their military origin and hone their swordsmanship, your father will request a duel to see what you have learned from Lin, and determine whether or not you are ready for the path ahead. It will not be the practice and training you have undergone with him before. You will have to bring your all to bare against the full martial prowess of a seasoned war hero.

For MC's that have chosen to follow their scientific origin and seek to research S.T.E.M. in Rosaline's facility, your father will conduct his own tests to see if this newfound power is worth the risk, or an endangerment to you. Though this isn't the peaceful, carefree life he wished to give you as a father, he will spare no cost to at least ensure your safety against every unknown he could think of, even if it means disregarding protocols.

For MC's that have chosen to follow their performing heart and find themselves ingratiated in Simon's troupe, your father will be interested in seeing what new tricks you've come up with in his absence. With less and less guards to patrol the city, opportunists have set their sights on raiding and stealing from the seemingly defenseless Bermuda troupe. They could not have expected the troupe to contain its own secrets.

For MC's that have chosen to follow their parent's legacy of covert operations, Hoft leads them to the underground catacombs where a final initiation of the Faction of Beggars takes place: The Lightless Gauntlet. Overseen by a faceless jury, your actions will be the determining factor on your placement as either a clandestine Operative or a lethal Agent.

And for MC's that have chosen to pursue Rachael's offer, the fathers will be present as Rachael conducts tests to push the MC's limits and fully measure the potential of the S.T.E.M. product she's developed, even should there be pain and possible chance of dysmorphia involved. Depending on the father present, they will comment or even intervene in different ways. Thankfully, Rachael is not so crazed to risk everlasting harm or death to their subjects! On a good day, at least...

I'll be very interested to see how these new scenes will be recieved. I've also thought to implement some new stylistic choices in the writing with giving the character's named skills. It gives it a bit more of a gamey feel, and I will have to see how it feels going forward, I'm mostly using this as a test. I will probably cover that at a later date once it is closer to release haha.

With this update the Choicescript version is on ice, though if there's ever a change to how CoG handles publishing (and if CS gets expanded array usage), who knows what the future holds for a more mobile and screenreader friendly version of Ballad.

For those new to the game:

The West is Wild and the West is Weird. A new century is around the corner, and you are an outlaw traversing the towns and terrains of the Frontier, only to one evening get wrapped up in chasing down the means to stop a doomsday cult from bringing forth the end of days. “Wah're you dooimg?” You manage to get out with Atsumu’s hands squishing your cheeks. Instead of giving you an answer, he just keeps kissing you. Press after press of his lips against yours and your eyebrow furrows the same time his does.

After each peck, he glances at your lips and blinks, lost in thought before going back in for another kiss. "What d'ya do?" Atsumu finally asks.

You stare right back at him, trying your hardest to understand what he means by that. "Uhh... context, please? Why are you being weird?"

"Hey—!" Atsumu protests, "I'm not weird," He says as he plants another one on you. Pulling back, he sticks his tongue in his cheek; the way he always does when he's confused. He’s so adorable, it makes you want to squeeze the life out of him. "I'm doin' an investigation, 'kay?"

Before you can stop him, he goes back in for another round. Pushing at his chest you begin to laugh, "Atsu... what has gotten into you?" He can't help but grin every time he hears your giggles, especially when he's the cause.

Your smile meets his as he mumbles against your mouth, "Somethin's different... Yer kisses aren't the same today."

You frown. “Bad different?”

Atsumu abruptly stops his barrage of kisses to look you dead in the eye. “No, no, no. Yer kisses could never be bad, yer so amazing ‘n you’ve got the most perfect mouth in th— ow!" He rubs at the spot on his chest you punched, "I just said they were different s’all,” Atsumu fully pouts, muttering something about “holdin’ back yer punches…that kinda hurt, baby.”

You put both hands on his cheeks just like he did to you a couple minutes ago, bringing his head forward, placing a soft kiss between his scrunched eyebrows. “I have no clue what you’re talking about, but okay, weirdo.” You say, planting another one onto his nose.

Before you can climb out of his lap, he jolts forward and licks your mouth. “Wha— ‘tsumu!”

“Yer chapstick.”

When all you do is blink at him, he clarifies, “Ya changed yer chapstick. What is that, strawberry?”

“Oh,” you say, letting him lean back into your space. “Yeah, I wanted to try out a new one. Do you like it? If not, I can buy my old one again.”

“Oi,” He tuts, arms circling around your waist to bring you closer, “I didn’t say that. I like it. I like you,” Atsumu says as he rests his forehead against yours, his eyes smiling.

“You have a crush on me?” You raise a brow, teasing, “That’s embarrassing ‘tsumu…”

He licks at your mouth again in response. Ignoring your various protests, Atsumu manages to roll the two of you over so he hovers on top of you. “C’mere, gimme kisses.”

“No—! Stop licking me!” You giggle again when he brings his mouth down to the ticklish part of your neck.

“I have to get used to yer new chapstick, c’mon.” He whispers, trailing his lips back up to your face, littering kisses all over. “Kiss. Me.”
