Maybe Arthur is just greedy. That's why he brought Mordred to the castle, that's way he gathered his knights and personally fussed over them until they felt comfortable and ready. Maybe that's why he tried so hard to make his spouse feel at home, so that they wouldn't leave him like so many did.
He wants everything and everyone for himself, he wants and wants and wants and will do everything for what he has to stay with him.
He always hopes people stays. He cares for them, giving everything he has so that they have fewer reasons to leave him. He aches so much when they do that he can only bear the pain in silence, biting his tongue as he reminds himself that that's their own choice, that not everything has to be tied to him.
Arthur will do everything in his power to make people stay, because he had nothing for so long that now he craves everything within his reach. There was a void consuming him from the inside, something malicious and envious, that led him to accumulate and hoard. Now he can't bear to let go of what he has.
Arthur is selfish. And because he is selfish he will apologize to his spouse and ask for forgiveness even if he was the one to hurt them.
He needs them, he needs them so much it hurts.
He has to at least try.

tbh i could care less about shitty plot lines. i come for the characters and i stay for the characters. you could give me the shittiest plot in the whole world but if the characters are real and i connect with them then i’ll defend the whole shitty shebang until my dying breath watch me
