Because the last time it showed Beatrice getting all badass on a hallway of guys she said Psalm 16:11 first. “You make known to me the path of life.” (Full: You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.) Basically saying she’s putting her faith in God to see her through safely, because that whose mission she’s on. Then she fights a hallway full of armed guards and *only* pulls out her staff after she’s been shot.
Juxtapose that to this season 2 scene. She’s not on a mission from God. She’s one a mission for Ava. Her only empathy and compassion towards her enemies is her opening statement. She nearly immediately arms herself with her staff. Nothing is going to stop her not because she has faith that God will keep her safe or in her own abilities. Nothing is going to stop her because she will not let anything stop her from being at Ava’s side. In this life, and the next.
Somehow, to me this is a love confession from Beatrice to Ava. So brave, firm and passionate yet still gentle, polite and thoughtful. Just like Beatrice herself.
Miss Tonteri-Young nailed it, the smile between those words cracked me. I don’t know how to NOT in love with her performance. Neither do i know how to not in love with this show.
