Random Thoughts Brotherband

I just finished reading the first brother band book, and I'm completely in love with Ingvar. Like, when I first met him I would willing up guide him and explain everything. Now I would destroy anything that tries to hurt him.

My thoughts on Brotherband Chronicles book 9: The Stern Chase

I didn’t have high expectations going into this one (thank The Missing Prince and Escape from Falasie for that) but it was so good.

The fact that it implies that Hal is a man whore. “But Hal wasn’t ready to settle down with one girl”. Is great

I love the Lydia and Ingvar pairing, and it is atypical how the main characters aren’t the ones to settle down first.

The fact that John Flanagan just… had a bear massacre and kill 5 people…

Ulf and Wulf being the bridesmen is so on brand and amazing.

They don’t have beards though, in my mind the entire crew is still 16.

The oar ramming is always my favorite move they make.

Erak’s hilfman isn’t Borsa anymore… that’s sad. But Erak threatening a sanction and a blockade? Amazing.

And Hal locking Jesper in the storage room to avoid a saga was my favorite scene. It’s the Skandian version of ‘hold my beer’.

Kloof and Erak’s relationship has progressed so much.

Overall 9/10. It had enough story for the plot if that makes sense. Escape from Falasie had too much plot for the story and The Missing Prince had not enough story in it.

"For how long have you been standing there?" – @riiese (Ingvar)

"For How Long Have You Been Standing There?" @riiese (Ingvar)

“Long enough,” Jade replied. She took a few steps down, staring up at the man in front of her. She paused. Froze more like. She’d seen beings of various heights. Daikini. Nelwyn. Faeries even. But nothing like this. She’d never seen a man so tall before. Her travels around Andowyne and beyond the Barrier of home was certainly opening her eyes to a world that she could never have imagined. Even Kit’s dreams of adventure couldn’t have prepared her. “I take it, you’re not Daikini.”

She studied his behavior, observed him. She was trained to anticipate in order to protect… but there was nothing to anticipate. He very clearly had no intention of attacking or charging or running. He just stood there. Unless he was talented at disguising his body language. But everything told her that, at this moment, she was safe. Her hand never moved to remove blade from sheathe. It rested loosely on the pommel as it usually did, out of habit and comfort.

She Studied His Behavior, Observed Him. She Was Trained To Anticipate In Order To Protect But There Was

“I’ve just…” She paused a moment, looking for the right words. She didn’t want to cause offense. She was a great fighter, but she wasn’t sure she could take someone his size. She’d only be able to run and that didn’t guarantee success. “I’ve never seen someone as tall as you.”

Ingvar's Eyes, Framed By Bushy Brows, A Large Nose, Scruffy, Long Hair, And A Thick Beard Interrupted

Ingvar's eyes, framed by bushy brows, a large nose, scruffy, long hair, and a thick beard interrupted only by a deep buccal scar, became enshadowed with a frown. Long enough, she said. Long enough for what? And what was a Daikini? How far had he been taken from the mainland?

"I... am not... being that," he confirmed. He didn't move. Not yet. It would be foolish. Move, and this woman might either draw her weapon or run away, neither of which he wanted.

"For what reason are you asking, and for what reason have you been watching of me?"

She took one cautious step back, but forced herself not to take another. Her gaze watched as he lowered himself closer to her. But the moment was slow, rather than quick. He wasn’t charging or attacking, so her cautious step had simply been force of nature and nothing more. She stayed as still as possible to prove she wasn’t a threat.

She Took One Cautious Step Back, But Forced Herself Not To Take Another. Her Gaze Watched As He Lowered

Jade looked down at his palm before looking back up at him. “No, I can’t say I have.” He was offering to show her. She glanced over her shoulder a moment. Her friends were somewhere nearby, but this should be fine. She let go of her sword pommel and climbed onto the palm. “I’m Jade. What’s your name?”

It Was Sheer Curiosity, Then? Or Caution? His Eyes Narrowed, And He Couldn't Help But Wonder. He Hoped

It was sheer curiosity, then? Or caution? His eyes narrowed, and he couldn't help but wonder. He hoped it was the former, but needed to ensure it was not too much of the latter that his next move frightened the human into drawing her weapon...

With great delicacy, and far more slowly than usual, the giant moved from standing to kneeling, and offered his hand, palm-up, to this knight.

"If you have never been meeting one such as I, then... you have never been seeing setting sun from where I am seeing it. Would you like to?"

“Oh, no, just Jade,” she gently insisted. Calling her a “lady” always chafed at her. Ballantine would tease her with it when she dressed up for one of the Tanthalos’ parties that Kit would invite her to. The title always felt too fancy and above her station. She had never belonged in the same class as the elite; she knew her place, so the word never felt right when regarding her as such. “Nice to meet you, Ingvar.”

Oh, No, Just Jade, She Gently Insisted. Calling Her A Lady Always Chafed At Her. Ballantine Would Tease

Hazel eyes took in the view, drinking in the moment. She’d never seen a sunset quite like this. Not even from the top of the canyon mazes back home. “Yeah… Wow.” Did he always see the world like this? What was everything else like? “Kit would love this,” she couldn’t stop herself from blurting. Her mind often went back to Kit during moments like this, when they were separated. She hoped the other woman was okay. “What brings you to these lands, Ingvar? Are you from here?”

"My Name, Lady Jade," The Giant Began As He Slowly, Gingerly Stood; While One May Have Imagined The Journey

"My name, Lady Jade," the giant began as he slowly, gingerly stood; while one may have imagined the journey up, up, up in the air with him as he stood would have been stomach-lurching and abrupt, the giant somehow, in no small part thanks to the careful consideration given to each minutest of movements, managed to make that trip far up feel akin to sailing upon calm waters.

"I am being called... Ingvar."

He stood up straight and held his cupped hands out and level with his eyes.

"Can you be seeing it? The sun setting?"

In the distance at the horizon, the sun's honeyed rays spilled out and painted the sky a wash of vivid oranges and pinks and purples. It was far easier to see from up hee, without so many bases of tree trunks obstructing the view.

“Your view is beautiful.” Jade’s gaze crosses the horizon, studying it all. Maybe even memorizing it. This is what they are fighting to protect. This world, this beauty, it’s worth saving. This single view immediately reminds her even if she doesn’t need reminding. Or perhaps, it’s more of a reinforcement of their motivations.

Your View Is Beautiful. Jades Gaze Crosses The Horizon, Studying It All. Maybe Even Memorizing It. This

Her daze is broken by his questions about Kit. She turns her head to look at him, feeling a blush color her cheeks, face heating up. A soft smile. How is it that she’s still bashful at the mention of her Kit? “Kit is my… love,” she answers simply. That seems a substantial enough answer. Her smile fades when she remembers what he said about living safely. “Is your home not safe?”

Just Jade? Very well; he could do that, but it would feel terribly impolite!

"Oh, yes, Mi—... Jade. I... I am seeing world like this," Ingvar explained, unsure how he could see it in any other way but with his eyes up here. The light breeze batted at his hair and beard, as though bidding the giant keep talking.

"From here? No. I.... I am seeking... place where I can be living safely," he explained. "Who... is this Kit of whom you are speaking?"

His words trigger her sympathy for him. She can’t imagine her home being basically no more. And yet, that is the danger she and her friends are facing. The Wyrm is coming to destroy life as they know it. If they can’t stop it, if they lose this war, her realm, her home will be gone, overtaken by darkness. Maybe it won’t be uninhabitable, but it will be the end as they know it.

“I’m sorry,” she tells him sincerely. “My home is in trouble, too. Me and my friends, we’re trying to stop it.” She pauses, looking back out at the sunset. She’s reminded of the beauty of the Shattered Sea, but also the ever changing behavior of time there and beyond, the way night and day felt like separate entities with no transition in the Immemorial City. What if they lose this? “That’s why sights like this are so important.”

The giant feels his heart flutter. There is that human concept again, love. He's heard much about it, and it seems to him an awfully positive and pleasant thing, to be in love with someone. He can't help but smile as he thinks of this knight being happy, truly happy, with another. With this Kit. He has an abundance of questions about her, about them and their love.

But he cannot ask them. Ingvar's heart sinks into the pit of his stomach with the subject change, and his smile is wiped clean from his face as though it were never there in the first place.

"Not safe... I am supposing. It... so far as I am knowing, it is no longer..."

He paused, trying to think of the right words.

"... habitable, I fear."

❛ i'm not ready to fight yet. ❜ – @riiese (Ingvar)

I'm Not Ready To Fight Yet. @riiese (Ingvar)

“You don’t have to,” Jade replies, shaking her head. Not everyone in the world is like her. She’s been fighting since she was a kid. She’s always ready to fight. Since learning her history, learning about her birth culture and the identity of her true father, Jade now knows she was born to fight. It comes naturally. But Ingvar, despite sharing her soft heart, does not seem to share her lack of compunction for violence. And that’s okay. Jade is here to protect people like him, to carry that weight for him. “Not everyone is made to fight, Ingvar, and that’s okay.”

❛Where did you learn to do that?❜ – @riiese (Ingvar)

Where Did You Learn To Do That? @riiese (Ingvar)

“I learned from my f—” She pauses a moment, her hand lowering just slightly. She can see his face so clear in her mind. She tries not to remember his face from the last time she saw him, barely a husk of himself, more undead than living. She tries pushing it aside and remembering his stoic pride in her, the last words he gave her in Tir Asleen before her life changed forever. She tries to remember him as her father, even if she can’t say the word out loud. “My Commander. His name was Ballantine. He taught me everything I know with a blade, just about.”
