You loved Lucy with your whole heart and soul. She was the best thing in your life. But if you said you loved waking up at the ass-crack of dawn just to walk her, you would be lying through your teeth.

Not a single day had ever gone by where you’d not been woken up by Lucy’s wet nose all over your face, pawing at your belly to tell you to get up. You were always out of the house before seven o’clock, getting a nice run in every day and picking up groceries if you were running out.

Seeing a moving truck parked outside the house opposite yours, now that wasn’t part of the routine. That house had remained empty for as long as you’d been living in the neighborhood, although you’d seen the owners drop in once in a while.

You had assumed the owners were moving in, but on your way back, milk carton in hand, you saw that the guy sitting outside the house was not one of the owners.

He didn’t look too happy to be in the neighborhood. He was seated on the sidewalk, hands laced together on top of his knees, staring dejectedly at his scuffy shoes. You couldn’t help but stare. He was so engaged in his… wallowing, that he didn’t notice you at all.

That was until Lucy barked happily at the sight of someone new and began tugging on your leash. When you tried to reign her back in, hissing, “Lucy, no,” she let out a bark, grabbing the stranger’s attention.

The moment he saw your hyper Border Collie, his frown turned into half a smile, and he gave both of you a wave. You waved back, taking in his second-day scruff and messy hair. He looked like he hadn’t gotten much sleep. But strangely, it seemed to be working for him.

He stood up, dusting himself off before hollering, “Is it friendly?”
