While Peekaboos’ silly Halloween theme is entertaining as always I feel legitimately bad for Dmitri hearing that this was picked up from when he was much younger. It’s similar to when a relative buys you presents tailored to what you enjoyed as a child, but rather than being willfully ignorant of change, Peekaboo seems unable to grow past Dmitri’s childhood.

Dmitri places a lot of importance in his mature cool and collected exterior and Peekaboo being so emotionally driven brings a great dichotomy.

Dmitri, again, seem legitimately anxious about his spirit and resentful of it’s personality. The “His spirit didn’t care about anyone in the Journalism club, or Ed, or Isabel, or anyone. Why did he always have put his feelings aside for someone else?” really hits for me. Especially since we’ve seen younger Dmitri do it in Spender’s stories.

The incident that seems to scare Dmitri so much is the same that made Isaac feel alienated from the club, the same that made Dmitri leave the club. He mentions his shape shifting before the sound of the lightning, and that what it did what a cruel prank.

My take/theory on this vague description of the event, is that Peekaboo must have somehow had a hand in the event, or at least in making it worse. In Spender’s recollection of the event he describes it as Isaac having “mistakenly shot a stray bolt of lightning at Dmitri in a mixup neither spectral could explain” [Chp 7 Pg 84] - and in the illustration it shows Dmitri seemingly merging back into his typical form. Hinging on the mention of his shape shifting before the lightning struck, I believe that Peekaboo transformed Dmitri into some enemy or hostile form that Isaac attacked on instinct. Dmitri didn’t say anything about his spirit’s involvement for unknown reasons, maybe embarrassment or maybe he didn’t know at the time.

Although this would explain what exactly happened to make Isaac shoot Dmitri, it still doesn’t explain why Dmitri is so terrified of upsetting his spirit. Maybe Dmitri’s form gets manipulated under Peekaboo’s emotions? It could potentially be a secrecy problem rather than a safety problem, but It’s still unsure. I’m also curious of what Dmitri could have transformed into to activate Isaac and how he managed to escape presumably unscathed, if Spender is to be believed.
