The first episode of The Trainee is intriguing to me — and I’m enjoying seeing everything get set up.
To begin with, I enjoy the way the serious tone of the workplace works with the lighter, comedic tone of other scenes. The show is going to have fun with us, but also take itself seriously in the topics it covers in relation to work at a production house. If I recall correctly, the story is also heavily based off Parbdee itself, and what it’s like there, and you can tell, from the commitment to really making the company feel like a workplace that takes itself seriously.
I enjoy Ryan as a main character. He’s very quiet, awkward, and confused about what he wants in life, He’s the type who needs time to start talking (otherwise he stays silent) and the type who gets kind of pushed around into situations because he can’t speak up. Ryan has been thrown into a situation where he truly has no idea what he’s doing. A total fish-out-of-water. And all of the interns are struggling, but Ryan most of all. We’ll see what keeps him at the company soon, and I’m excited to see where his character goes. There’s a clear character progression set up for him.
Honestly, I commend Ryan for keeping it together emotionally after this episode, actually. Because if I was him, I’d be incredibly broken up after that first day. He doesn’t know what he’s doing and fumbled around for most of a day. His friend’s messages deliver a clear contrast in what would be ideal versus what is happening.
Jane is an interesting love interest. He isn’t very present in this episode (though the next episode preview promises a lot of him soon) and all we have of him so far is negative. He’s immediately unimpressed by Ryan from his first scene meeting him (if his eyes are to be trusted) and he’s critical without much support, at least for now, though he does have the grace to explain things when asked. I’m looking forward to see what the series will have in store for Jane, and how they’ll endear him to us, as well as make Jane and Ryan begin to like each other. Because their current conflict makes a lot of sense, and I’m curious how things will begin to change. Ryan is not prepared for this work. But what is this all for if not for him to learn?
I love the side cast and how they’re being set up. Especially Pie. Her deadpan affect and clear passion for filmmaking is already endearing her to me, and I feel like we’ll be seeing her story a lot, from what’s said about Ryan and Pie having to work together a lot if they’re chosen. I want to see them bond! I’m a sucker for set-ups like this, and I can’t wait to see how the characters continue to work together and evolve.
Also: I like the ending chat-style segment explaining things the audience may not know about production houses, agencies, and pilots. Ryan is already a protagonist who is relatable for the average viewer who is unaware of the goings-on of the production house, and with this, there’s a fun way to get exposited some crucial information while having the characters involved.
And as a side note, this show is very visually appealing. Pleasing to the eye in a way I can’t describe, like other Parbdee shows. I’m already here, buckled in for the ride.
Thoughts on The Trainee ep.2
As someone definitely watching the show from a perspective close to Ryan (I’m a student in university right now, and I expect I’m in the part of my life the show intends to depict through Ryan’s character) I really do appreciate how real it feels to how stressful the early stages of the internship are! The unsure, lost fumbling through the first tasks you’re given. Man, this show definitely got me into Ryan’s headspace. I definitely cheered with him at the end of the episode.
I’m really enjoying seeing the full side cast!
Pie and Pah as a dynamic being set up in the background was fun to watch. I’m not 100% sure of it, but I’ve seen some discussion on the possibility of the pair being a couple, if I recall correctly because of some behind the scenes? I’m fine either way it goes, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of the entire group. Also, I found it lightly amusing (despite my dislike of Harry Potter for obvious reasons) that they acted out the Ron and Hermione dynamic with the Wingardium Leviosa reference.
Though as a side note: not a fan of Pie this episode for making Ryan ask that question to Jane, partially for the reason Jane listed but mainly for making Ryan do it. I’m intrigued if her personality will be built upon more. We can also see more of her flaws when she’s talking with Pah about painting the swords and berates him about the paint, and then not listening to the explanation. It feels intentional.
I respect Jane. He’s stressed, trying to keep the project together, and acts fierce and frustrated, but both us as the audience, and Ryan himself, know better than to see him the way that the side character who badmouths him this episode does. And it’ll be a fun experience to watch Ryan learn more under his wing and for Jane to soften up around him.
All in all, I really enjoyed the episode and the potential future for the series it’s setting up. I think it’s a shame that the show is getting reviewbombed over on MDL, and I’m looking forward to next week.
happy to have an offgun sunday show back on the docket but i can already tell this series is going to put a bee in my bonnet every week about late stage capitalism foisting its cancer upon all workplace cultures and turning things like internships from learning and exploratory opportunities to build skills and discover interests in a field, to an expectation of free/low paid but inexplicably pre-skilled labour. do you think ye olde blacksmith's apprentice showed up to the first day of the apprenticeship and the blacksmith is like "what do you mean you don't know how to shoe a horse?? that's so basic" no. the expectation of apprenticeship is that a newborn emptyheaded youngin with a vague notion that metal is cool shows up, and is taught how to blacksmith. the expectation is not that the young savant of metalwork turns up with a list of horses already shoed, including One Very Special One in the Royal Stable, and god would you please please please allow me to debase myself for you, o blacksmith? my resumé is just like the journeyman's!! this workplace culture is a modern invention!! they used to teach you things at work!!
[breathing audibly] i just think entry level should mean entry level, and that as much effort goes into gathering experience that makes people competitively hire-able, ability, opportunity, and luck also play a role. it is lucky to know your passion early enough to be able to groom yourself to competitiveness in a sharky field of work, but a person should be able to turn up for entry level positions/interning with an unabashed "i know nothing" as long as it's followed with an "and i'm ready to learn" and it is in neoliberalism's favour to allow work environments to cut their costs by eschewing the responsibility to teach. to train the trainee.
The new episode of The Trainee is going to release in a couple minutes and I am excited (and nervous and so damn terrified) to see the outcomes and consequences of last week.
I am also super excited to see the comparison and contrast between JaneRyan of it all and the JudyBahmee(Tae) of it all. Hopefully we get some resolutions around the table and I see some more of Pah, Pie, Baimon and Ink as well. I miss them.
Golden

jane 🤝🏻 ryan omnipresence is key.
The twin fantasies!!!

They are BOTH down so bad!!
I love this parallel to show they are in the same place with their feelings for each other, even if Jane can’t really express himself properly with words yet - possibly cos unlike Judy he’s aware of the power dynamics that exist between them and that it’s not the right time.
I saw the title card and was sure I was going to SOB. And sob I did. Not for the reason I thought I would.
Jane and Ryan as usual have my heart and mind and everything about it was perfection! The jealousy and the friend clocking it immediately! The Ryan and Jane going through the SAME things! The SHOES! I was loosing my mind.
TaeBahmee. The way I SOBBBED through the last couple of minutes was needed. I am glad to see that Tae was reflective and knew where he went wrong. Bahmee, I am disappointed in her. I would hope by the end of the show she would have thought, reflected and properly apologized as well instead of apologizing for the sake of it.
Pah and Pie (and the friend group with regards to TaeBahmee) I am happy to see this. Having been in work places that are not traditional (which lead to blurring personal and professional lines) I have had teams fall apart because of relationships and perceived relationships. It is realistic. We spend more time with people at our work place than anywhere else. It's understandable this would happen. I am interested to see what would be the outcome and resolution of it all.
Judy. Sighhh. I have mixed feelings for her. She had been cool until a few episodes ago (pre massage). Since then, her blurring the professional power imbalance has been jarring. Especially in the light of Jane being rigid about it. I would've liked if she would have talked to Bahmee about the kiss in a more honest and serious capacity. The way she made light of it is only going to make Bahmee more confused as we see in the preview. She also should have taken some amount of responsibility. I am not really on her team (even though the actress is sooo pretty and the styling is damn cool) that being said, I'm not sure Tae Bahmee should get back either. All of them need to grow, Tae needs to understand how to be a better boyfriend and Bahmee and Judy need to take a stock of what they've done and what repercussions that would have on their professional and personal life, and now that the bi-awakening has happened, I'm pretty sure Bahmee needs to reconfigure her life and figure herself out.
Anyway... This is the longest I've written in a while I guess. I'm excited to see where it goes next. Looks like it is going to be Ryan's turn to be jealous next.

OHHHH!!! Alsoalsoalso!
The scene right after Ryan's friend says 'lets swap shoes' the screen cuts to someone looking for tape (who turns out to be Pah) had me screaming at the screen because I was SOOOO sure it was going to be Jane getting the tape to use on Ryan's shoes and got sad thinking how disappointed he would be.
Jane, sleepless, restless, overwhelmed, possibly even a bit giddy: How do I say I thought about what you said all weekend? I thought about you last weekend too. And the one before. I think about you too much. I think about how sometimes you're the most helpless thing I've ever seen. I think about how other times you are so tuned into your emotions that you're a little terrifying.
How do I tell him "please take care of yourself"? I want you to eat well. I want you to stop falling over your own feet. You shouldn't keep trying to keep the hours I keep. I made a mistake letting you stay that night, but you were so tired. I want you to rest. You look so soft when you sleep. Did you know that? I thought my heartbeat could wake you, it was so loud. I'm aware every moment that the thing you need protection from is me and my sharpness.
When I said I'm scared for you I meant I'm scared for me too. Sometimes time gets too slow because you're too close and I can't be the one to reach for you.
How to do I explain that I really wanted to say something back when you said that you liked me? But I can't. And I shouldn't. And I'm so, so sorry I made you cry again.
How do I say in 6 weeks I want to take you to dinner and say this all over again while I hold your hand in mine?
Oh, I know. Foam footwear.
My thoughts on The Trainee Ep 10.
(I watched it last week but then my mom was here so wasn't able to update the thoughts. Gonna do this now, please forgive me if there are overlaps to the new episode or any of the old once. It's not as fresh in my head.)
Jane picking up and dropping Ryan off, not overstepping to 'announce' necessarily his courtship. Realising it is just the two of theirs until they decide to address is something very personal to me. The whole moment was very precious and I loved it. The uncertainty on both their ends. It was so palpable and beautiful and soft.
Tae being heartbroken and barely being able to function, after such a long relationship, probably the only real and meaningful relationship is so profound because how is he to do anything when his heart is shattered and he is barely holding on. I like that. I also love that, after the previous (?) week and getting reassurance from P' Jo, that he matters in the workplace, Pah has become the glue and in a way the one who knows everyone and brings departments together, especially if it is to help is heartbroken Bestie. That being said, I unfortunately do not particularly like the rest of the art department pushing Tae to fight for her. I would have liked it if he came to that decision by himself.
Bamhee and P' Judy seem to be navigating the delicate balance of being intern-mentor and being interested in each other doesn't look much different from the beginning weeks (case in point the massage, it's a lot of casual leaning and touching and I don't know what to think of it.)
Pai continuing to get Ryan's crush wrong with so much of conviction is hilarious to me and makes me curious to see how it comes out in the open, so to speak.
BOYS! You want to flirt, I get it, but maybe don't leave the evidence right there? Are you insane?!!!!?!?!!? Do you have no regard for my mental peace? That being said you are so cute and I would happily turn a blind eye to those papers. Also, Ryan as someone who works in a printer shop I thought you of all people would be against it but sure.
NOOOOO PAI DON'T USE THOSE PAPERS! DON'T SEE BEHIND THEM! I DIDN'T MEAN TO JINX IT. Is this how you are going to find out about them?!
I like that Bamhee is slowly becoming more and more keen towards her work. It's nice to see her focus on work instead of a person, specifically someone she is romantically involved with.
Ohhh shit. Judy is making the decisions. That's not all good. She is paying attention but in the wrong way. Bamhee has to tell her, she had plans from earlier, if she wants to be heard.
I liked Bamhee and Pai's conversation. One, because it's good to see their friendship continue and blossom. It's very wholesome and heartwarming.
Second, because I like that they are addressing Bamhee's feelings towards Tae as well as Judy. She is uncertain of where she stands and for someone who is just starting out in their queer(bi/pan?) journey it is nice to see that acknowledgement. Also, not being mean but I like that she realises that sometimes that much attention from one single person can be overwhelming to deal with.
Nice call back to Ryan and Jane blocking the scene in the van in one of the earlier episodes. I love how they end up blocking, was it again Jane's choice to ask for Ryan?
Same question I have Jane, How has Ryan survived so far?
How am I just realising that Acts of Service is a big part of Jane's show of love and affection? Jane just casually roasting his peers (validly) to show Ryan that sometimes there is nothing special about the adults is at the same time so important and hilarious to me.
Pai falling shouldn't be so hilarious. Why am I laughing! The timing of it coinciding with Jane's monologue, the fact that the papers have incriminating evidence of a secret 'to-be-relationship', the fact that all the interns are just so clumsy and chaotic, the fact that she couldn't open the water bottle and just gave up on drinking water (honestly full relate Pai) everything is pure comedic genius. Even more than the P' Baimon as crush + Windows error tone.
Also... Jane, I love you. But who are you calling losers, when your secret is laying out in the open for anyone to see and with only you and Ryan to save yourself. 😭😭😭 Good to know at least you can laugh at it. Hopefully you've disposed off the evidence.
Ohhh it's the grand romantic gesture. I get that your heart is in the right places Tae. I hope it works out for you.
Ooooh you are never to touch personal pillows! I think Judy can be a great mentor to Bamhee, don't know about the romantic interest (which is I think what the narrative is going for as well. In my opinion at least.)
The entire team conspiring to get Bamhee to Tae would've freaked me out if it was me. (What is interesting is, even the mean colleagues from earlier episodes are happily a part of Pah's team, make of it what you will.)
Say what you will, it is quite pretty and both of them look super cute.
I am glad Tae told her about the anniversary, instead of choosing to suffer in silence. Especially considering how much effort went into it, how much he overworked himself. Because if she didn't get to know about it, there's a possibility of resentment later on which is not good.
(ohhhh it's from The Terminal! I love the movie. Catherine Zeta Jones was sooo beautiful in that. I love her.)
Go Bamhee! She knows now what she wants and what she needs. She knows how she needs it rectified. She doesn't need these big gestures (exclusively) she more so wants love on a more everyday basis and I think it's so good to see her acknowledge it and speak about it instead of keeping all the times she was hurt by his silence because it felt like a dismissal. I'm proud of them both. I needed this conversation with them if it was to go in this direction.
I also liked that Bamhee had a conversation with P'Judy as well instead of just ghosting or just becoming non-committal about it. Shows she has matured. Also will not come at the cost of her internship. I like Bamhee's realisations, they feel honest to the trajectory and narrative arc. For the first time I feel like I'm seeing an emotion in P' Judy's eyes which as mean as it sounds, finally shows it meant enough to her as well.
Awwww... Everyone is so happy for them and honestly, me too. They've understood where each of them went wrong, I would've liked Bamhee to honestly address the kiss as well but except for that I have no complains honestly.
I love him Jane is constantly aware of Ryan and the things surrounding him. Case in point the print shop = production house comment. I'm sure it made him feel seen. I also like that this show keeps reiterating that you don't need to have lofty dreams and careers to be a successful functioning human being, just as long as you are authentic and kind. As someone who is really struggling with the whole career bit, I would've liked if someone could tell me this irl.
I hope the whole story about Jane's directorial route comes out before the series ends. I want to know him more, especially considering his (slimy) ex could be the trashy intern.
Oh hey! Ryan the namesake search is back! I missed it. I like that Ryan is slowly becoming more sure about himself. I also like that Jane is fully smitten and can't seem to take his eyes off of him.
You're right Ryan. He is very cool.
I think we all know what or who he was thinking about when getting the photo taken.
I like the message tidbits everytime. I especially like to see the hesitation in the messaging.
See you back for the next episode thoughts. Would love to hear more from you all as well so feel free to pop in!
