“I will leave him to you.”

I just had an epiphany that most of the Blood of Youth characters I headcannon as asexual wear ace colors. Coincidence? Probably

A mirror between eunuchs and ghosts

Back when Jin Xian visited Hanshui Temple, young Xiao Yu cried and demanded that he take him along.
Over a decade passed, and much has changed.

Wow… is Jin Xian going to be a villain in the donghua? I mean, one of the things this scene accomplishes in the novel and the live action is establishing a degree of suspicion for Jin Xuan. To have Jin Xian take his place is a deliberate choice, and I’m curious to discover if it has the implications I think it might have.

Scoured Weibo today and managed to find a few new images of Jin Xuan and Jin Xian!

These scenes and Jin Xian’s relationships with Jin Yan and Wuxin have such an interesting contrast. In the process of helping him, Jin Xian refuses to be lied to by Wuxin and goes so far as to more or less threaten imperial judgment. Meanwhile, with Jin Yan, who has allegedly told many lies, Jin Xian is willing to face whatever fate His Majesty decides for him as long as Jin Yan can live. I don’t know if it speaks most to Jin Xian’s intense loyalty to/love for his shidi, or if it’s more a result of the losses Jin Xian experienced in the episodes between these scenes, but it’s certainly an intriguing difference.
Do you think Jinyan misses his life as a Eunuch in the imperial court?
Interesting question, thanks for the ask! 😺 Jin Yan’s post-canon situation is quite fascinating to explore, and I’ve thought about it a lot. The live action leaves his circumstances rather vague other than Jin Yan now being under Jin Xian’s watch, but there are two small details the novel adds that give clarity and direction to their future:
The world believes that Jin Yan is dead. To hide him, Jin Xian has personally ordained him a monk and given him the name Pushan.
After Jin Xuan was confronted by Jin Xian, Prince Bai, and the rest, he was locked up in Heavenly Prison but escaped several days later. No one has seen him since.
For the first point, I expect that Jin Yan would play the role of a monk fairly effectively on the surface. He is well-practiced in being careful with his words, which would go well with the Right Speech aspect of Buddhism’s Eightfold Path. He would, however, likely struggle to actually be a monk. One of his most notable traits is greed, a form of attachment—which leads to suffering, according to Buddhist philosophy. Whether or not Jin Yan would actually be inclined to embody the part he’s playing, Jin Xian would likely encourage him to do so. Jin Yan’s gratitude to Jin Xian for saving his life may make him more open to listening to his lectures, or at least pretending to.
Interestingly, the name that Jin Xian gave Jin Yan, Pushan, is a Hindu god known for protecting travelers. This could be reflective of Jin Xian’s desire to travel the Martial Arts World and his intention to do so with Jin Yan.

Which brings us to the next point: Jin Xuan. Jin Xian probably remained in Tianqi because he wanted justice for Jin Yu and Jin Wei. Jin Xuan’s escape could be the catalyst for Jin Xian and Jin Yan to finally leave and track him down. I expect Jin Yan would have complicated feelings about this; he was betrayed by him, yes, but Jin Xuan has a hold on him that may not be so easily broken. Jin Yan may have been able to stand up to him once, but could he do it again?
There is another thread of vengeance that live-action Jin Yan may be more inclined to pull: Xiao Lingchen. In the novel, Zhuo Xin’s death was caused by someone in self-defense and wasn’t witnessed by Jin Yan—and there’s no indication he would seek revenge against this person. But in the live action? Jin Yan watched Xiao Lingchen betray their plan, stabbing his helpless shifu right in the heart. Zhuo Xin was there of his own initiative in the novel, but in the live action, Jin Yan was the one to convince him to come. Unlike in the novel, where he had Zhuo Sen and Zhuo Luo to keep him company, live-action Zhuo Xin was alone in the mausoleum; he took this risk—made this sacrifice—so Jin Yan wouldn’t be. The guilt that Jin Yan would feel might not catch up to him for a while, given the turbulent circumstances of everyone in the world hunting him down immediately after, but eventually he would remember his shifu’s death—and would likely rather turn his anger toward Xiao Lingchen than blame himself.

So, would Jin Yan miss being an imperial eunuch? There’s one more thing to establish: what does he want? He wants power, yes, but I think he wants a specific type of power. The kind of power that Marquis Lanyue has: low responsibility, high respect. Both Jin Yan and Marquis Lanyue are used as messengers by their superiors, but, given Marquis Lanyue’s complaints at his brother-emperor’s requests, it is likely that such tasks are much rarer for him—especially as Emperor Mingde is the only person in the world he needs to answer to. Otherwise, he can live as indulgently and glamorously as he wishes. Meanwhile, Jin Yan is used by several individuals and put in most of the footwork necessary to hold the entire Langya Rebellion together. Indeed, I believe that Jin Yan envies Marquis Lanyue above all others. The reason for this is best illustrated in a scene in the novel during an important ritual. Jin Yan gets in trouble for complaining about being hungry, while Marquis Lanyue can chat freely and munch on snacks during it. Marquis Lanyue does what Jin Yan wants to do—and he has the life he’s hungry for. And while Jin Yan needs to act submissive and watch his every step around Prince Chi, he has likely witnessed Prince Chi demeaning himself just to win his uncle’s attention and favor. Jin Yan wants to be like Marquis Lanyue, and a Eunuch of Seal is closer to a marquis than a monk—unless Jin Yan finds a new way to satisfy his hunger, he will crave his old life.

Hello! From what I see in your blog, you're very knowledgeable about the Eunuchs in TBOY and Dashing Youth. I'm having problem to identify who's who so I'm just wondering if you have a guide of their names, position, motives, appearance and short backstory? An appearance guide with DY and TBOY actors comparison will be very helpful. At first I thought Zhuoqing of DY is the same guy in the TBOY who also has white hair that keep helping the red prince but I'm afraid they are different people. I hope this is not too much to ask because I genuinely want to know about them but I always ended up confusing myself more. Have a nice day.
Hello, thanks for the ask! 😺 It always makes me happy to see people being curious about the Five Eunuchs! If you want to know more about them, you’ve definitely come to the right place! I’ll probably make a more comprehensive guide at some point, but I can offer a good bit of information here.
The Blood of Youth Eunuch Tree

To start with, here’s a guide to the Blood of Youth eunuchs and how they’re related. I explain more about it in this post: https://www.tumblr.com/feng-huli/753083060426293248/blood-of-youth-eunuch-tree
Now, for Dashing Youth, I’m afraid that I have less to offer, as not all of the eunuchs have appeared yet. Still, I can show the ones who have.
Zhuo Qing

First, we have Grand Eunuch Zhuo Qing. He is the shifu of the Blood of Youth’s Five Eunuchs (except for Jin Yan, who was taught by Zhuo Xin). He serves Emperor Tai’an and is fated to guard the Imperial Mausoleum when he dies. Needless to say, Zhuo Qing is far from pleased by such prospects and is fighting to change the future that has been written for him.
Jin Xuan

Next is Jin Xuan, who succeeds his role as Director of the Five Eunuchs. Growing up, he was the study partner of Xiao Ruojin (also known as Prince Jingyu, Emperor Mingde), and now serves as his most trusted companion and bodyguard, among other roles.
Jin Xian (Jade Deity, Shen Jingzhou)

Jin Xian is known as the Eunuch of Incense in Tianqi and Shen Jingzhou of the Blizzard Sword outside it.
Other

There’s also Eunuch Li (pictured left) and Eunuch Cheng (pictured right). Less is currently known about them, as they aren’t in The Blood of Youth.
The Blood of Youth Loyalties
Finally, for now, there is the matter of loyalties. The eunuchs are honestly some of the most complex characters in the Blood of Youth, and this chart merely touches on the alliances between the eunuchs and the royals. Jin Wei has assisted all of the princes, but I believe his devotion is to his shifu above all else. Meanwhile, Jin Xuan is… ambiguous. Even if his greatest affection is for his emperor, he is reluctant to put his whole heart into one person or cause.

I hope this was helpful!

此乃天启城外,而我未入天启,便仍是江湖之人。所以,我只是沈静舟,你也只是我萍水相交的朋友,叶鼎之。 This place is outside Tianqi City, and since I haven’t entered Tianqi, I’m still a person of the jianghu. So, I am only Shen Jingzhou, and you are only a friend I met by chance, Ye Dingzhi.

Unofficial attire, past and present
Ooh! Such a fascinating thought! Interestingly, there’s already a bit of an opposition drawn between the Five Eunuchs and Dark River in the novel, insofar as Jin Xuan believes that he and Su Changhe cannot coexist—they agreed when they first met that the Imperial Court belongs to Jin Xuan and the Martial Arts World to Su Changhe. It’s definitely interesting thinking about how Jin Xian and Su Muyu might parallel each other in some ways, while their bosses hate each other yet assist the same prince.
I don't know if its just me but Eunuch Jin Xian reminds me of Su Muyu. They are similar in a way both of them can be corrupted in a place where they work at. Court politics and Assassin organization? But somehow they are not tainted and manage to be still righteous in their own way? The way Jin Xian emphatize with his fellow eunuch and want to avenge them reminds me of Su Muyu feeling bad about Su Changli's death saying the youth is not an assassin but more like a warrior so he don't deserve that death?
Yesss, that’s such a great parallel! And Jin Xian is also accompanied by two people, his disciples, Ling Jun and Bo Yong (well, and the four unnamed burly men carrying his palanquin)
