I absolutely love the close up of their van kiss. You can tell that both Luca and Marwan got really into the kiss based on how they just leaned into it. I swear they forgot everything but kissing each other. And Marwan's pinky rubbing Luca's shoulder before they were forced apart! 😭😭😭

Nicky is clearly framed as The Sensitive One: the one who worries about Nile being scared and alone when she first discovers she’s immortal, who invites her to talk through her nightmare with them, who’s still thinking about the kids they thought they were rescuing after it’s clear they’ve been set up, who thinks about small things like offering a non-aggressive greeting to civilians they pass while armed to the teeth in a former war zone (“peace be with you” might just be a standard greeting in Nuer, the same way it is in Arabic, but I think it’s also his way of saying “don’t worry, we’re not here to harm you.”)

But also…Nicky’s the sniper, a kind of violence associated with coldness and deliberateness and ruthlessness, and we see that he is very good at it. When he and Joe are sleeping, Nicky’s always the one in front, between Joe and the door, and when they wake up in the safe house Nicky has a gun in his hand before Joe’s even fully woken up. (He’s also the one who sees Nile put herself between Andy and a bullet when that needs to be done and copies the move immediately after.) And when we see him and Joe fighting together in the lab, he is usually the one in front, attacking first to disarm or disable an opponent and relying on Joe, behind him, to guard his back and finish the job. And they do it so fluidly that this is clearly an established pattern with them.

The only time we see him get visibly angry is when someone hurts Joe, and yes, of course. But also, “cinnamon roll who goes absolutely feral when you hurt someone they love” is a trope we have seen before, and I think there’s more going on here than that.

Nicky is quiet and attentive to others and emotionally intelligent, and he is extremely competent at violence; he’s just not quick to anger and he’s not cocky or showy about it. “He thinks you’re a mouse, Nicky,” Joe says about Merrick, and he thinks it’s funny, because he’s seen this so many times before, someone underestimating Nicky because they think he’s soft, and he has most definitely seen that be the last mistake they ever make.

I was only looking for more content of Joe and Nicky from The Old Guard but now I’ve watched 2 seasons of a German historical drama because Tumblr couldn’t tell them apart 😭

I guess if the dominant person isn't tall, then they'll have a domineering personality. Like Crowley in Good Omens, and Mickey in Shameless. But then, the question is imo, are the domineering personalities and taller actors chosen for the POC character who's part of a MM couple?

I'm basing this off of a personal childhood experience, just to give this whole possible dynamic some context. I'm brown-skinned, and a very well-meaning art teacher said to me, 'Why don't you draw your character as darker.' I went with it, but what my friend next to me did next really shocked me. She said, 'I want to make my character tougher, so I'll give her dark skin.' He didn't correct her, nor did I. So up until the age of 12 (she was 13 btw), I had never thought people could attribute personality traits to skin tone, and much less being "tough" to being brown-skinned. I'm interested, therefore, to see if this might be the case in the media when it comes to interracial MM couples, or if I'm reading too much into things. ☺️

In MM couples onscreen and especially in fanfic, are the POCs almost always shown to be dominant? Idk, just a random thought

oh my god what did we do to deserve the old guard?? i never expected to see that kind of casual representation done right in an action movie. being gay isn’t joe and nicky’s entire personality, like they’re not Token Background Characters in there for brownie points - we get to see them function as characters outside of their relationship, but obviously being in love with each other is still a huge part of who they are as people, so we still get joes speech to nicky in the convoy for example which when i tell you i had a BREAKDOWN. the little things, like them sleeping together?? the head bump?? bruv when we say casual representation, THIS IS WHAT WE WANT
