This show was such a breath of fresh air. Having been a Shin-Lee fan since Reply 1997, and the characters that have always been true to life, this was a cathartic drama, especially for me, to see ORs and outpatients running as it was preCOVID. While the medical re enactments were accurate, it was a drama about the thoughts and lives of the doctors treating the patients. From having patients treat you well, them showing bad tempers to you, to the helplessness you feel when there isn't a lot more that can be done, this drama did an amazing job of how each individual took care of these issues and themselves in the process. The growth of these characters from episode 1 to 12 is beautiful, and their friendship is the key to it all.
For now, I'll be mending my heartbreak with multiple rewatches, fanfiction, watching their band practice, listening to the soundtrack and working to someday be just as brilliant as these guys, while 2021 comes and brings us another season of our lacking 5.

I think we can all agree on the fact that Seok-hyung is incredibly aware that he is going through different stages of depression for the entire run of first season of Hospital Playlist. He almost never complains about it and just takes the punches that life keeps throwing at him, listless, as if this was his destiny. As if his lot in life is to suffer because he is the son of a man who refuses to take responsibility for his actions. So, Seok-hyung decides to be the one to shoulder those responsibilities for his whole family.
This wasn’t always his life and this wasn’t his attitude towards life from the beginning. It started after the death of his sister that culminated in his mother suffering a stroke from the shock of losing her daughter so suddenly. That same day, on his way to meet his family and attend the funeral, Seok-hyung encounters his father with his mistress on the same airplane. And to top everything that happened that year, while he was away in the US working, his wife divorces him. I would be depressed af too.
It’s no wonder he has no desire to pursue any kind of personal relationship or establish professional friendships in the hospital. He avoids everyone and everything because he doesn’t want to be burn again. Or worse: that he falls in love with someone and that person will end up hurting as much as he is hurting because of his family’s circumstances.
Responsibility. That’s the theme crossing Seok-hyung’s arc in the drama. He feels responsible for his mother because he ignored her pain through all the years she was married to a man who had no love for her. And now that his father is dead, he feels responsible for the baby that will soon be his sibling. A baby that will grow up knowing their father abandon his/her mother before he/she was even born, leaving them penniless without any kind of consideration of the 10 year relationship they shared.
Seok-hyun has said how important is for him that people are responsible, and it’s because of his own experience with his father that he has this preference. This situation has created in him a mindset where he honestly believes, at this point of the story, that it would be far more responsible of him to stay away from someone he loves than having them shoulder his troubles with him. This is why he rejected Min-ha. Even though is clear as day that he has feelings for her, but Seok-hyung is operating on a fear that slowly eats his soul. Preferring to watch over the person he cares about as mentor and steering clear of any romantic interaction with her.
If Seok-hyung is a bear, then he is a hibernating bear. Hiding away in his den (basement) with his siblings (the 99ers) and Mother (he does lives in her house) waiting for the harsh winter to pass. But Seok-hyung should know better than anyone that life doesn’t always give us what we want and, unexpectedly, it might have given him what he needs. Someone good, kind and charming, declaring her love for him proud and loud, with cake and colorful party poppers.
The last scene of Hospital Playlist was all about GomGom Couple and Seok-hyung’s family. When Min-ha makes a move, he wants to be closer but chooses to stay professional, and then his past calls him. Literally. I wouldn’t be surprise if the second season started with Seok-hyung once again or that his arc will become more prominent this time around. The drama has set everything up for him to develop his storyline wherever he wants to take it.
