Kris - Tumblr Posts
I can't even believe I'm saying this, but...
I think that Kris actually is possessed by something other than the player.
To be clear, I'm not talking about the Weird/Genocide/Snowgrave route, or about anything that happens during gameplay. Pushing Noelle to proceed, her hearing a creepy voice that doesn't belong to Kris - all that shit is on you. Like in Undertale, the fact that the player controls the player character is a central mechanic of the universe.
But them ripping out their soul and opening dark fountains? That isn't really them. And given that I'm a person who absolutely hates the "blame everything on Chara possession" attitude that plagued Undertale, as you already know if you've been following me for a while, you know that I wouldn't believe this if there wasn't evidence for it.
So here's the deal.
In Chapter 1, when we saw Kris tear their soul out of their chest and stuff it into a birdcage, everyone — including myself — saw this as a way of asserting their independence from the player: they no longer want you to control them. But in Chapter 2, when we saw them do it again not once but twice, some odd details stood out to me.
The first thing is the way they move when it's happening. We see Kris walk on their own during cutscenes and such, and they never do it with their head down and their legs splayed out, shuffling along like a zombie. Maybe you could say that it's just how humans move after their soul's been ripped out...if it weren't for the fact that they start doing it in the moments before they tear out their soul. I don't feel like hunting down gifs and screenshots for this post, but if you watch them at the end of Chapter 1, there's this moment where they hold out their hand and open and close it a few times. Almost like they — or someone — is testing their control of it. Again, they never do this at any other point when they take over their own movements.
Related to this is the second point: two out of three times that this has happened, Kris has been hurled out of a dead sleep to do it. They quite literally get thrown out of bed/off the couch to shuffle around and create dark fountains. Speaking hypothetically, if you were an entity that could possess people, wouldn’t it be easiest to do it when they were sleeping? Their mind would be at its most defenseless, and they’d already lack full control of their body. That in itself isn’t direct evidence, but it’s worth noting.
What is direct evidence is the fact that Kris only ever rips out their soul after dark. And after finishing the game, if you’ve recruited enough Darkners from the Cyber World, you can talk to Seam again and they’ll say: “You don’t want to get caught when the sun goes down…”
The wording there feels very deliberate. Get caught. Like they know that something will “catch” Kris after sundown, something beyond their control. And sure enough, it does.
So Kris has been caught by someone who wants to create Dark Fountains. There’s only one person we know who wants to do that: the Knight. Worth noting is the fact that other characters refer to the Knight as “he,” not “they.” Given that pronouns are actually important in Toby Fox world, this indicates that Kris isn’t actually the Knight, just being controlled by him. So how come the first thing the Knight does is make Kris rip out their own soul? Because he doesn’t want you, the player, to interfere. Undertale introduced the idea that you can directly control a person via their Soul; now Deltarune is expanding on the concept, showing that you’re not the only one with this ability. The next few chapters of the game may very well involve you and the Knight struggling over your “vessel.” You want to use Kris’s power to seal the fountains; he wants to use that same power to create fountains.
I’m not one hundred percent sure who the Knight is yet, or how exactly he ended up getting control of Kris — maybe the fact that they canonically studied the occult has something to do with it. But I think I know why. Things are going to get a little more speculative than evidence-based here, so forgive me, but there are a few things to suggest that Kris isn’t the first pawn that the Knight has tried to open fountains with.
Queen mentions that only Lightners can open Dark Fountains. She learned this through the Knight, but what if the Knight learned it through trial and error? What if he tried to use Darkners to do his bidding first, but his attempts backfired?
This is where our trash friends Jevil and Spamton enter the picture. We know that long before we ever met them, they both encountered a mysterious person who caused them to begin seeing the nature of their reality, and that this knowledge drove them insane (albeit in different ways). There’s no hard evidence yet that the mysterious person was indeed the Knight, but if it was, maybe he thought that Jevil and Spamton could be used to open fountains for him, but whatever he did wound up breaking them. I could be completely wrong about this — even if the mysterious person was the Knight, he could have had a totally different reason for driving them both insane — but based on the information we currently have, I think it’s a possibility. It wouldn’t be just Jevil and Spamton who were his “test subjects,” either; Seam alludes to there being more Dark Crystal carriers, and thus more secret bosses.
But in the end, the Knight found out that Darkners couldn’t achieve what he needed them to achieve. This would also imply that he’s a Darkner, or that there’s some other reason why he can’t open fountains on his own; either way, he turned to Kris, and now he can take control of them. Just like we can.
But seriously, guys, Kris isn’t possessed by Chara in the Snowgrave route, so take some goddamn responsibility for your actions. That is all.
is it just me, or does the idea of queen’s rooms of your personalized searches just seem. really creepy?
yeah- maybe it’s just because it’s such a staunchly dystopian concept, but can we notice that these are public computers? even in broad daylight, noelle is googling some pretty disturbing stuff. not just creepypastas and dumb horror things, but noelle’s recurring searches about “the last month of the year” (december) fill up a bookshelf. assuming that the theme of Queen/The Internet taking things too literally continues, Noelle could possibly have been doing research on December Holiday- not “the holiday in december.”
If that’s true, Noelle could possibly be doing her own investigation into what happened to Dess- I feel like Noelle wouldn’t reference her so vaguely unless she truly didn’t know where Dess was. It would make sense- Noelle’s family is clearly wealthy and Noelle is a clear introvert, why wouldn’t she do something like that at home? Noelle also clearly has morbid fascinations with mystery and horror- she resolves to find out what happened to Kris in the Snowgrave route with little consideration for her safety, even then just being terrified for her life when Kris approached her.
If Noelle is indeed googling her sister’s name so frequently, it lends massive credence to the “Dess is missing” theory.
I don't think that Kris made the dark fountain or is the Knight because the dark world was already there before them and Susie even went in the closet,Kris also seemed scared to even go in the closet which is strange if they made the dark fountain in there
I also think that it is a little bit far fetched to think that Kris would even try to kill/harm Susie.
And what happened in snowgrave was the player's doing not Kris'
Yea it is weird that Kris has a knife on them but I don't think they would try to kill someone willingly.
So at the end of chapter 2 we get confirmation that Kris is the knight, and opens portals with their blade (their knife), right? We get confirmation that at the end of chapter one when Kris tears the player out of their body, they go and make the fountain in the library, the very one that shows up in chapter 2, also.
If Kris is the one making the portals, ones that immediately suck the surrounding people into them, why didn't we immediately get sucked into the portal in the closet in the first chapter?
Well, there's three answers.
One, Toby just wanted to add suspense, and I'm looking far too into this after playing the snowgrave route and having pixelated ice-murder on my brain.
Two, Kris hadn't made the portal yet, and made it as they were in the closet with Susie, out on a whim and not knowing they were able to do so,
And three, Kris had their knife in the closet with them because they were going to harm or even kill Susie. I know this sounds far fetched but when you think about it, Susie was bullying and threatening to kill Kris, who we already know is a morally grey character. Say Kris DIDN'T make the portal before hand, why would they have their knife on them? Why would they willingly go into a room ALONE with Susie who just threatened their life?
Why would they open a dark fountain right in their livingroom while she was sleeping, knowing it'd end the world?
It’s up to Susie?
So I dunno if anyone has thought of this theory with the whole Ralsei asking us how Susie’s doing but I wanna put in my two cents.
But what if Ralsei wants us to view Susie doing nice things for a reason, being a character we could trust in doing the right thing (and being very lovable)
Chapter 1

Chapter 2

I could easily see Ralsei talking about Susie
‘So that’s why… it has to be Susie‘
Something to that extend
I don’t have any ideas on why, it just feels like Susie is going to grow more and more into a hero with each chapter, someone we root for, someone the player wants to side with
My theory is that Ralsei is telling Kris that Susie is going to be their last hope in something or that she’ll be the one give the final choice in something?
Anyway, that was my rambling on a theory that just popped in my head XD

GOD FUCKING damnit KRIS where the FUCK are we!?

Peace of Mind

The Sorrow-Song Swordsman fought as he wept, wept as he sang, sang as he fought.
The tears would leak from sleepless eyes and fall into shadow and fire, dissolving in the chords of throats-cut-screaming by a blade that is a nail strumming strings.
Burning blood makes iron, and it takes more than iron to forge cutting-steel.
But a spoken word cuts deeper still.
When your words are blades, and your blade can sing, and your songs stain all your words with blood- can you find solace in your mind?
Where does a slayer find peace?
-- Slowly reposting art from my Twitter account and taking full advantage of the more relaxed text limits. This one was for a Kadungganan whose singing words could cut, from an old Gubat Banwa TTRPG campaign- esteemed warrior-braves battling across the isles inspired by classical/early colonial Southeast Asia, perpetuating a river of blood and violence, asking themselves why they fight.
-- Blade design is based on a particularly long Lumad kris, which I've been told are made from the deconstructed blades of their defeated enemies, repurposed for their own use.
The Seventh Blade: Kalis - Bleeding Edge
And so- in the end- the wheel must turn, and a new day must usurp the old. Perhaps then, these long-fallen flowers will feed the soil, and nourish a new bloom. Perhaps the fire will find home in the bleeding rivers and cauterize the land, and the steam will rise into skies of the clearest blue. Perhaps our songs will be of triumphant yesterdays, hard-won and now bearing fruit. But we are Kadungganan- we do not sit idly to await the dawn. We claw at heaven to bring forth our own tomorrow! One more day until the launch of the Gubat Banwa Kickstarter! Fight for another day in the turbulent fires of the Sword Isles, carving out your own story by blade and sheer will in this tactical martial arts TTRPG, inspired by the thousand, thousand colors of Southeast Asia.

I've been posting weapons I've drawn for the game to count down the final week before the launch. This was supposed to be for Swordtember, but the deadline had to be pushed back. 7/7 blades, ending with the KALIS

This blade adorns the logo of Gubat Banwa, at once uniting and splitting in twain. Kalis refers to a number of uniquely Philippine variants of the more widely known collective of kris blades, which appears in several forms across Southeast Asia.

(Diagram by Lorenz Lasco) What separates Philippine kalis from kris seems to be an answer with multiple facets. Some say it's a linguistic matter, others say kalis refers specifically to certain blades from the Sulu archipelago.

(Photos from Raymundo Lucero)

(For comparison, an Indonesian kris) Admittedly, the kalis is a bit of a blindspot in my knowledge. I've done what research I can, and asked those who know better, but I exist a considerable distance away from where these blades belong- physically and culturally. This is, perhaps, where I will be most prone to making mistakes of fact with the information I present. If I make any mistakes, please do not hesitate correct me!

(Photo from Zambasulta Pakukus) On the heels of that disclaimer, let's take a look at the blade. This is definitely one of the most beautiful weapons I've ever had to draw. Philippine kris/kalis tend to be longer and more "sword-like" than those of our neighbors.

(Photos from Johnwick Cabrera) The hilts tend to differ depending on who makes them. Some sport what might be cockatoo/"kakatua" bird-head hilts, some have very ornate junggayan hilts, some feature okir carvings, some are more rudimentary.

(Photos from Dennis Andrew Golez) The blade is used by several peoples in the south Philippines, including the Maranao, the Tausug, and the peoples of Maguindanao. I am most definitely missing a few groups, this is not an exhaustive list. There are differences between the way they build hilts and assemble blades that I don't feel qualified to speak about. And yes, the blades are like that because they are an assembly near the handle.

(Photo from Sulu Utak Shop) Apart from hilt shape and assembly, variations occur in blade thickness, ornamentaion, presence and type of okir carvings, number of curves or seko (odd numbers), length (kalis sundang = "swords", kalis gunong = "daggers") Actually- you know what?

(Photo from Richard Hudson) Since this is the last one in the countdown, I'm going to do something different. I invite you to find the answers yourself. That is part of what Gubat Banwa is meant to be: an invitation to engage in a fantasy setting centered on our cultures, so you can tell stories built on our terms. The cultures in the Sword Isles are NOT the cultures in the real world from which they draw inspiration. It is very much still a fantasy setting. But part of engaging with the setting in good faith is doing your own learning, on things for which you are not owed an explanation. Curiosity rewards the adventurous. The kalis is well-researched. If you're curious about something, you'll find the answers. You don't need me to hold your hand.
Instead, I'm just going to show you some of the coolest kalis I've seen.

(Silver and ivory-hilted kalis from the NCAA) A (relatively) simple but gorgeous build by a modern smith.

(Blade by Zambasulta Pakukus) A pair of kalis from a smith in Zamboanga.

(Blade by Panday Onsboy Maktar) Silver-hilted kalis from Sulu.

(Photos from Arma Filipinas; Polished by the "Blade Barber") Kalis with some gorgeous carvings on it.

(Photos from Sulu Utak Shop) Kris inlaid with a brass naga.

(Photos from Ron Zambaranno) Kalis rehilted by a Lumad group- uncertain which group. Supposedly, the Lumad would take kris they captured from enemies, disassemble them, and rehilt the blade.

This one appears to have a blade that looks like most of the kalis we've seen, but with a hilt similar to Indonesian or Malaysian variants.

(Photos from Raymundo Lucero) Antique Moro kris sundang with a hilt made of fossilized mammoth tooth, ornamented with a silver coin from the 1700s. A personal favorite, as I used the hilt as a reference for one of my favorite designs.

(Photo from Richard Hudson)

(Art by yours truly) As with the panabas, the people who make and use the kalis are still around. There are bladesmiths, scholars, practitioners of Moro Fighting Arts, historians, and just people who live alongside these blades who can tell their own stories better than I ever could.

(Photo from Richard Hudson)
I hope this and all the other threads I made inculcated an interest in some of you- even those who just look at the pictures (I see you)- to look into these blades yourself. Do your due diligence, treat people with respect, and approach what you are unfamiliar with in good faith- and you should be well on your way to learning more than you thought there ever was to know.
The Gubat Banwa Kickstarter launches in 1 day! Check it out here:

A very special thanks to GB team-member onefloor who helped expand my knowledge on this blade. This legend scores the music for Gubat Banwa, check them out here! This will be the last blade post I do for the promotion. I'm going back into the hole I dug in the ground to work on the rest of the weapons I'm drawing for this game. If there's interest, I might do another series of 7 before the Kickstarter campaign ends. Anyway, help us get the word out, small team of creators from the global south, too broke to advertise, etc. etc. you know the drill by now if you've read the other posts. Until next time! Until glory!
