Why You Should Read The Diviners Series by Libba Bray
• 1920’s Fantasy done well, awesome slang, speakeasies, the prohibition
• Shows the reality and how America is chalk filled with just how it is for people who weren’t white people from America, eugenics, police brutality, racism
• Magic, Romance, Mysteries, Horrors, Human Nature
•Libba Bray’s writing, so basically beautiful. (And heartwrenching)
•Ling Chan, who as of of book 3 is a Chinese ace wlw, also a needs leg braces after having infant paralysis, dream walks, and remains kickass and adorably grumpy
• Evie O’Neill, who demonstrates spiraling depression/PTSD and self destructing in a heartbreakingly familiar manner. Sucky past.
• Sam Lloyd, Jewish immigrant, possibly bi see @rinsantago , and someone who goes from being a loner to realizing he’s kind of built himself a family
• Isaiah Campbell, snarky, lovable, diviner, little brother that I really just want someone to wrap in bubble warp and keep him safe.
•Memphis Campbell, The “Harlem Healer”, who’s sewing with the problems of dating a white woman while being black, who has to deal with people treating him suspiciously because of his race. Isaiah’s big brother, and his love for his brother is kind of amazing.
•Theta Knight, a flapper, a diviner, who shows the truth of an abuse victim who escaped but is constantly looking over her shoulder. Strong and sad “Ziegfeld Girl.”
•Henry Dubois the 4th, a gay man who dream walks, intelligent, comes from a (verbally) abusive home he ran away from, a swell musician.
•Jericho Jones, who, while not my favorite (in fact I’m not a huge fan of his, which isn’t the most popular opinion) deals with the fallout of unrealistic insta!love, not really having a happy past (it’s pretty tragic), his life choices are dictated by other people in so many ways.
•Mabel Rose, an intelligent girl who starts as shy and stuck in unrequited love, half Jewish, deals with being in the shadow of busy parents who are revolutionists, a beautiful best friend whose self destructing, and a bunch of stuff (I’m not done with book 3), and by book 3 manages to find her own plot line. She has to deal with morality a bunch.
•to be honest there’s a ton more but this is were my head is at currently
